Wavelength Assignment in Hybrid Quantum-Classical Networks.

ABSTRACT: Optimal wavelength assignment in dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) systems that integrate both quantum and classical channels is studied. In such systems, weak quantum key distribution (QKD) signals travel alongside intense classical signals on the same fiber, where the former can be masked by the background noise induced by the latter. Here, we investigate how optimal wavelength assignment can mitigate this problem. We consider different DWDM structures and various sources of crosstalk and propose several near-optimal wavelength assignment methods that maximize the total secret key rate of the QKD channels. Our numerical results show that the optimum wavelength assignment pattern is commonly consisted of several interspersed quantum and classical bands. Using our proposed techniques, the total secret key rate of quantum channels can substantially be improved, as compared to conventional assignment methods, in the noise dominated regimes. Alternatively, we can maximize the number of QKD users supported under certain key rate constraints.

Excitation Wavelength-Dependent Photoluminescence Decay of Hybrid Gold/Quantum Dot Nanostructures.

Project description:Hybrid nanostructures comprised of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) and quantum dots (QDs) have been found to exhibit unique, new optical properties due to the interaction that occurs between the MNPs and QDs. The aim of this work is to understand how the exciton-plasmon interaction in these systems is dependent on the excitation wavelength. The nanoassemblies consisted of gold (Au) NPs coated in a silica (SiO2) shell of a controlled thickness and core/shell CdSe/CdS QDs adsorbed onto the SiO2 shells. Our findings show that the photoluminescence lifetimes of the hybrid constructs are dependent on the excitation wavelength relative to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Au NPs. When the excitation wavelength is closer to the LSPR, the photoluminescence decay of the hybrid structures is faster. We demonstrate that by tuning the excitation wavelength close to the resonance, there is an enhancement in the exciton-plasmon coupling between the Au NPs and QDs resulting in a shortening in the QD photoluminescence lifetime. We then propose a possible mechanism to explain this excitation wavelength-dependent phenomenon.

Assessing plasmon-induced reactions by a combined quantum chemical-quantum/classical hybrid approach.

Project description:Plasmon-driven reactions on metal nanoparticles feature rich and complex mechanistic contributions, involving a manifold of electronic states, near-field enhancement, and heat, among others. Although localized surface plasmon resonances are believed to initiate these reactions, the complex reactivity demands deeper exploration. This computational study investigates factors influencing chemical processes on plasmonic nanoparticles, exemplified by protonation of 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPY) on silver nanoparticles. We examine the impact of molecular binding modes and molecule-molecule interactions on the nanoparticle's surface, near-field electromagnetic effects, and charge-transfer phenomena. Two proton sources were considered at ambient conditions, molecular hydrogen and water. Our findings reveal that the substrate's binding mode significantly affects not only the energy barriers governing the thermodynamics and kinetics of the reaction but also determine the directionality of light-driven charge-transfer at the 4-MPY-Ag interface, pivotal in the chemical contribution involved in the reaction mechanism. In addition, significant field enhancement surrounding the adsorbed molecule is observed (eletromagnetic contribution) which was found insufficient to modify the ground state thermodynamics. Instead, it initiates and amplifies light-driven charge-transfer and thus modulates the excited states' reactivity in the plasmonic-molecular hybrid system. This research elucidates protonation mechanisms on silver surfaces, highlighting the role of molecular-surface and molecule-molecule-surface orientation in plasmon-catalysis.

Review of some existing QML frameworks and novel hybrid classical-quantum neural networks realising binary classification for the noisy datasets.

Project description:One of the most promising areas of research to obtain practical advantage is Quantum Machine Learning which was born as a result of cross-fertilisation of ideas between Quantum Computing and Classical Machine Learning. In this paper, we apply Quantum Machine Learning (QML) frameworks to improve binary classification models for noisy datasets which are prevalent in financial datasets. The metric we use for assessing the performance of our quantum classifiers is the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve AUC-ROC. By combining such approaches as hybrid-neural networks, parametric circuits, and data re-uploading we create QML inspired architectures and utilise them for the classification of non-convex 2 and 3-dimensional figures. An extensive benchmarking of our new FULL HYBRID classifiers against existing quantum and classical classifier models, reveals that our novel models exhibit better learning characteristics to asymmetrical Gaussian noise in the dataset compared to known quantum classifiers and performs equally well for existing classical classifiers, with a slight improvement over classical results in the region of the high noise.

A novel framework of classical and quantum prisoner's dilemma games on coupled networks.

Project description:Evolutionary games on multilayer networks are attracting growing interest. While among previous studies, the role of quantum games in such a infrastructure is still virgin and may become a fascinating issue across a myriad of research realms. To mimick two kinds of different interactive environments and mechanisms, in this paper a new framework of classical and quantum prisoner's dilemma games on two-layer coupled networks is considered. Within the proposed model, the impact of coupling factor of networks and entanglement degree in quantum games on the evolutionary process has been studied. Simulation results show that the entanglement has no impact on the evolution of the classical prisoner's dilemma, while the rise of the coupling factor obviously impedes cooperation in this game, and the evolution of quantum prisoner's dilemma is greatly impacted by the combined effect of entanglement and coupling.

A wavelength-convertible quantum memory: Controlled echo.

Project description:Quantum coherence control is reinvestigated for a new physical insight in quantum nonlinear optics and applied for a wavelength-convertible quantum memory in a solid ensemble whose spin states are inhomogeneously broadened. Unlike typical atomic media whose spin decays are homogeneous, a spin inhomogeneously broadened solid ensemble requires a counter-intuitive quantum coherence control to avoid spontaneous emission-caused quantum noises. Such a quantum coherence control in a solid ensemble satisfying both near perfect retrieval efficiency and ultralong photon storage offers a solid framework to quantum repeaters, scalable qubit generations, quantum cryptography, and highly sensitive magnetometry. Here, the basic physics of the counter-intuitive quantum coherence control is presented not only for a fundamental understanding of collective ensemble phase control but also for a coherence conversion mechanism between optical and spin states involving Raman rephasing.

Quantum-to-classical crossover near quantum critical point.

Project description:A quantum phase transition (QPT) is an inherently dynamic phenomenon. However, while non-dissipative quantum dynamics is described in detail, the question, that is not thoroughly understood is how the omnipresent dissipative processes enter the critical dynamics near a quantum critical point (QCP). Here we report a general approach enabling inclusion of both adiabatic and dissipative processes into the critical dynamics on the same footing. We reveal three distinct critical modes, the adiabatic quantum mode (AQM), the dissipative classical mode [classical critical dynamics mode (CCDM)], and the dissipative quantum critical mode (DQCM). We find that as a result of the transition from the regime dominated by thermal fluctuations to that governed by the quantum ones, the system acquires effective dimension d?+?z?(T), where z is the dynamical exponent, and temperature-depending parameter ?(T)???[0, 1] decreases with the temperature such that ?(T?=?0)?=?1 and ?(T????)?=?0. Our findings lead to a unified picture of quantum critical phenomena including both dissipation- and dissipationless quantum dynamic effects and offer a quantitative description of the quantum-to-classical crossover.

Quantum clocks observe classical and quantum time dilation.

Project description:At the intersection of quantum theory and relativity lies the possibility of a clock experiencing a superposition of proper times. We consider quantum clocks constructed from the internal degrees of relativistic particles that move through curved spacetime. The probability that one clock reads a given proper time conditioned on another clock reading a different proper time is derived. From this conditional probability distribution, it is shown that when the center-of-mass of these clocks move in localized momentum wave packets they observe classical time dilation. We then illustrate a quantum correction to the time dilation observed by a clock moving in a superposition of localized momentum wave packets that has the potential to be observed in experiment. The Helstrom-Holevo lower bound is used to derive a proper time-energy/mass uncertainty relation.

First-Principles Prediction of Wavelength-Dependent Product Quantum Yields.

Project description:We present a method to predict wavelength-dependent product quantum yields (PQYs) for photochemical reactions and applied it to Z/E-isomerization and several ring-closing reactions of Z-2,5-dimethyl-1,3,5-hexatriene and truncated previtamin D. Using branching ratios from surface hopping molecular dynamics, individual trajectories are correlated with the absorption spectra of their initial structures. The wavelength-dependent PQYs are computed by dividing the average spectrum of the initial structures of the product-forming trajectories by the average spectrum of all initial structures. Accurate absorption spectra are calculated using the correlated ADC(2) method with an implicit solvent. Calculations reproduce the experimentally found trend of increasing six-ring formation and decreasing Z/E-isomerization on the red side of the spectrum. Over all seven reactions studied, the mean absolute error (MAE) between experimental and calculated PQYs (MAE) amounts to 8.1%, and the largest MAE is 18.6%. For four reactions, predicted values agree quantitatively with experiments within 5.6%.

Discrimination of entangled photon pair from classical photons by de Broglie wavelength.

Project description:Quantum optics largely relies on the fundamental concept that the diffraction and interference patterns of a multi-partite state are determined by its de Broglie wavelength. In this paper we show that this is still true for a mixed state with one sub-system being in a classical coherent state and one being in entangled state. We demonstrate the quantum-classical light discrimination using de Broglie wavelength for the states with all classical parameters being the same.

Quantum vertex model for reversible classical computing.

Project description:Mappings of classical computation onto statistical mechanics models have led to remarkable successes in addressing some complex computational problems. However, such mappings display thermodynamic phase transitions that may prevent reaching solution even for easy problems known to be solvable in polynomial time. Here we map universal reversible classical computations onto a planar vertex model that exhibits no bulk classical thermodynamic phase transition, independent of the computational circuit. Within our approach the solution of the computation is encoded in the ground state of the vertex model and its complexity is reflected in the dynamics of the relaxation of the system to its ground state. We use thermal annealing with and without 'learning' to explore typical computational problems. We also construct a mapping of the vertex model into the Chimera architecture of the D-Wave machine, initiating an approach to reversible classical computation based on state-of-the-art implementations of quantum annealing.
