<i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> produces membrane-derived vesicles (MVs), which share functional properties to outer membrane vesicles. Atomic force microscopy revealed that <i>S. aureus</i>-derived MVs are associated with the bacterial surface or released into the surrounding environment depending on bacterial growth conditions.
