A high-brightness large-diameter graphene coated point cathode field emission electron source.

ABSTRACT: There have been several long-standing problems of cold field emission sources for electron microscopy and lithography that have prevented their widespread use, such as their inherent ultrahigh vacuum condition requirement (<10-9?torr), relatively poor current stability and rapid emission decay. This paper presents a cold field emission electron source which overcomes these problems based upon using a graphene-coated nickel point cathode. Preliminary experiments demonstrate that it provides stable emission for relatively large tip diameters (micron sizes), can operate in high vacuum conditions (>10-8?torr) and has an ultralow work function value of 1.10?±?0.07?eV. It has an estimated reduced brightness value of 1.46?×?109?A?m-2?sr-1?V-1 for cathode tip-radius of 170?nm and the measured energy spread ranges from 0.246?eV to 0.420?eV for a tip radii range of 260?nm to 500?nm, which is comparable to state-of-the-art conventional cold field emission sources.

Boosting the electron beam transmittance of field emission cathode using a self-charging gate.

Project description:The gate-type carbon nanotubes cathodes exhibit advantages in long-term stable emission owing to the uniformity of electrical field on the carbon nanotubes, but the gate inevitably reduces the transmittance of electron beam, posing challenges for system stabilities. In this work, we introduce electron beam focusing technique using the self-charging SiNx/Au/Si gate. The potential of SiNx is measured to be approximately -60 V quickly after the cathode turning on, the negative potential can be maintained as the emission goes on. The charged surface generates rebounding electrostatic forces on the following electrons, significantly focusing the electron beam on the center of gate hole and allowing them to pass through gate with minimal interceptions. An average transmittance of 96.17% is observed during 550 hours prototype test, the transmittance above 95% is recorded for the cathode current from 2.14 μA to 3.25 mA with the current density up to 17.54 mA cm-2.

A Graphene-Coated Mo Tip Array for Highly-Efficient Nanostructured Electron Field Emitters.

Project description:An efficient electron field emitter based on a monolayer graphene coated well aligned Mo tip array has been designed, fabricated, and evaluated. The advantages of this hybrid nanostructure film morphology are explored and discussed. Efficient and stable field emissions with low turn-on fields have been observed with the new devices. It is further found that the combination of graphene and Mo tip array leads to significant improvements in efficiency for the nanoscale heterostructure emitters.

Field-emission electron gun for a MEMS electron microscope.

Project description:This article presents a field-emission electron gun intended for use in a MEMS (microelectromechanical system) electron microscope. Its fabrication process follows the technology of a miniature device under development built from silicon electrodes and glass spacers. The electron gun contains a silicon cathode with a single very sharp protrusion and a bundle of disordered CNTs deposited on its end (called a sharp silicon/CNT cathode). It was tested in diode and triode configurations. For the diode configuration, a low threshold voltage <1000 V and a high emission current that reached 90 µA were obtained. After 30 min of operation at 900 V, the emission current decreased to 1.6 µA and was stable for at least 40 min, with RMS fluctuation in the anode current lower than 10%. The electron beam spot of the source was observed on the phosphor screen. In the diode configuration, the spot size was the same as the emission area (~10 µm), which is a satisfactory result. In the triode configuration, an extraction electrode (gate) control function was reported. The gate limited the emission current and elongated the lifetime of the gun when the current limit was set. Moreover, the electron beam current fluctuations at the anode could be reduced to ~1% by using a feedback loop circuit that controls the gate voltage, regulating the anode current. The developed sharp silicon/CNT cathodes were used to test the MEMS electron source demonstrator, a key component of the MEMS electron microscope, operating under atmospheric pressure conditions. Cathodoluminescence of the phosphor layer (ZnS:Ag) deposited on the thin silicon nitride membrane (anode) was observed.

Deterministic cold cathode electron emission from carbon nanofibre arrays.

Project description:The ability to accurately design carbon nanofibre (CN) field emitters with predictable electron emission characteristics will enable their use as electron sources in various applications such as microwave amplifiers, electron microscopy, parallel beam electron lithography and advanced Xray sources. Here, highly uniform CN arrays of controlled diameter, pitch and length were fabricated using plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition and their individual emission characteristics and field enhancement factors were probed using scanning anode field emission mapping. For a pitch of 10 µm and a CN length of 5 µm, the directly measured enhancement factors of individual CNs was 242, which was in excellent agreement with conventional geometry estimates (240). We show here direct empirical evidence that in regular arrays of vertically aligned CNs the overall enhancement factor is reduced when the pitch between emitters is less than half the emitter height, in accordance to our electrostatic simulations. Individual emitters showed narrow Gaussian-like field enhancement distributions, in excellent agreement with electric field simulations.

Generation of ultrahigh-brightness pre-bunched beams from a plasma cathode for X-ray free-electron lasers.

Project description:The longitudinal coherence of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) in the self-amplified spontaneous emission regime could be substantially improved if the high brightness electron beam could be pre-bunched on the radiated wavelength-scale. Here, we show that it is indeed possible to realize such current modulated electron beam at angstrom scale by exciting a nonlinear wake across a periodically modulated plasma-density downramp/plasma cathode. The density modulation turns on and off the injection of electrons in the wake while downramp provides a unique longitudinal mapping between the electrons' initial injection positions and their final trapped positions inside the wake. The combined use of a downramp and periodic modulation of micrometers is shown to be able to produces a train of high peak current (17 kA) electron bunches with a modulation wavelength of 10's of angstroms - orders of magnitude shorter than the plasma density modulation. The peak brightness of the nano-bunched beam can be O(1021A/m2/rad2) orders of magnitude higher than current XFEL beams. Such prebunched, high brightness electron beams hold the promise for compact and lower cost XEFLs that can produce nanometer radiation with hundreds of GW power in a 10s of centimeter long undulator.

Prussian blue coated with reduced graphene oxide as high-performance cathode for lithium-Sulfur batteries.

Project description:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with their outstanding theoretical energy density are strongly considered to take over the post-lithium ion battery era; however, they are limited by sluggish reaction kinetics and the severe shuttling of soluble lithium polysulfides. Prussian blue analogues (PBs) have demonstrated their efficiency in hindering the shuttle effects as host materials of sulfur; unfortunately, they show an inferior electronic conductivity, exhibiting considerable lifespan but poor rate performance. Herein, we rationally designed a PB@reduced graphene oxide as the host material for sulfur (S@PB@rGO) hybrids via a facile liquid diffusion and physical absorption method, in which the sulfur was integrated into Na2Co[Fe(CN)6] and rGO framework. When employed as a cathode, the as-prepared hybrid exhibited excellent rate ability (719 mA h g-1 at 1C) and cycle stability (918 mA h g-1 at 0.5C after 100 cycles). The improved electrochemical performance was attributed to the synergetic effect of PB and conductive rGO, which not only enhanced the physisorption of polysulfides but also provided a conductive skeleton to ensure rapid charge transfer kinetics, achieving high energy/power outputs and considerable lifespan simultaneously. This study may offer a new method manufacturing high performance Li-S batteries.

Subcycle surface electron emission driven by strong-field terahertz waveforms.

Project description:The advent of intense terahertz (THz) sources opened a new era when the demonstration of the acceleration and manipulation of free electrons by THz pulses became within reach. THz-field-driven electron emission was predicted to be confined to a single burst due to the single-cycle waveform. Here we demonstrate the confinement of single-cycle THz-waveform-driven electron emission to one of the two half cycles from a solid surface emitter. Either the leading or the trailing half cycle was active, controlled by reversing the field polarity. THz-driven single-burst surface electron emission sources, which do not rely on field-enhancement structures, will impact the development of THz-powered electron acceleration and manipulation devices, all-THz compact electron sources, THz waveguides and telecommunication, THz-field-based measurement techniques and solid-state devices.

Tunable graphene micro-emitters with fast temporal response and controllable electron emission.

Project description:Microfabricated electron emitters have been studied for half a century for their promising applications in vacuum electronics. However, tunable microfabricated electron emitters with fast temporal response and controllable electron emission still proves challenging. Here, we report the scaling down of thermionic emitters to the microscale using microfabrication technologies and a Joule-heated microscale graphene film as the filament. The emission current of the graphene micro-emitters exhibits a tunability of up to six orders by a modest gate voltage. A turn-on/off time of less than 1??s is demonstrated for the graphene micro-emitters, indicating a switching speed about five orders of magnitude faster than their bulky counterparts. Importantly, emission performances of graphene micro-emitters are controllable and reproducible through engineering graphene dimensions by microfabrication technologies, which enables us to fabricate graphene micro-emitter arrays with uniform emission performances. Graphene micro-emitters offer an opportunity of realizing large-scale addressable micro-emitter arrays for vacuum electronics applications.

Specular Electron Focusing between Gate-Defined Quantum Point Contacts in Bilayer Graphene.

Project description:We report multiterminal measurements in a ballistic bilayer graphene (BLG) channel, where multiple spin- and valley-degenerate quantum point contacts (QPCs) are defined by electrostatic gating. By patterning QPCs of different shapes along different crystallographic directions, we study the effect of size quantization and trigonal warping on transverse electron focusing (TEF). Our TEF spectra show eight clear peaks with comparable amplitudes and weak signatures of quantum interference at the lowest temperature, indicating that reflections at the gate-defined edges are specular, and transport is phase coherent. The temperature dependence of the focusing signal shows that, despite the small gate-induced bandgaps in our sample (≲45 meV), several peaks are visible up to 100 K. The achievement of specular reflection, which is expected to preserve the pseudospin information of the electron jets, is promising for the realization of ballistic interconnects for new valleytronic devices.

Control of the near-field radiative heat transfer between graphene-coated nanoparticle metasurfaces.

Project description:The control of near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between two metasurfaces can be achieved by manipulating the geometric and dielectric parameters of their components. Based on a 2D effective medium approximation, we describe the dielectric response of each metasurface composed of graphene-coated nanoparticles (GCNPs) on a 2D square lattice as a homogeneous uniaxial film. Wrapping Drude-like nanoparticles (NPs) with graphene enhances the effective plasmonic response of metasurfaces by significantly broadening the frequency range in which surface and hyperbolic waves can be excited by thermal photons. Consequently, the NFRHT between GCNP metasurfaces improves that observed between uncoated Drude-like nanoparticle arrays. We found that the heat flux (Q) grows with increasing metasurface packing fraction (PF) and is also sensitive to GCNP size. By tuning the graphene chemical potential (μ) , Q reaches a maximum improvement of 88% for μ≈0.1 eV with cores made of Drude-like material, while using cores made of the polar dielectric SiC, Q increases up to 226% for μ≈0.45 eV. Our results show that, in addition to the geometric control achieved with uncoated NP arrays, the tunable optical properties of the graphene shell allow dynamic control of the heat flux, expanding the possibilities for NFRHT engineering offered by GCNP metasurfaces.
