Analysis of exergy efficiency of a super-critical compressed carbon dioxide energy-storage system based on the orthogonal method.

ABSTRACT: Super-critical carbon dioxide energy-storage (SC-CCES) technology is a new type of gas energy-storage technology. This paper used orthogonal method and variance analysis to make significant analysis on the factors which would affect the thermodynamics characteristics of the SC-CCES system and obtained the significant factors and interactions in the energy-storage process, the energy-release process and the whole energy-storage system. Results have shown that the interactions in the components have little influence on the energy-storage process, the energy-release process and the whole energy-storage process of the SC-CCES system, the significant factors are mainly on the characteristics of the system component itself, which will provide reference for the optimization of the thermal properties of the energy-storage system.

Why is adiabatic compressed air energy storage yet to become a viable energy storage option?

Project description:Recent theoretical studies have predicted that adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) can be an effective energy storage option in the future. However, major experimental projects and commercial ventures have so far failed to yield any viable prototypes. Here we explore the underlying reasons behind this failure. By developing an analytical idealized model of a typical ACAES design, we derive a design-dependent efficiency limit for a system with hypothetical, perfect components. This previously overlooked limit, equal to 93.6% under continuous cycling for a typical design, arises from irreversibility associated with the transient pressure in the system. Although the exact value is design dependent, the methodology we present for finding the limit is applicable for a wide range of designs. Turning to real systems, the limit alone does not fully explain the failure of practical ACAES research. However, reviewing the available evidence alongside our analytical model, we reason that underestimation of the system complexity, difficulty with the integration of off-the-shelf components, and a number of misleading performance claims are the primary reasons hindering ACAES development.

Highly N-doped microporous carbon nanospheres with high energy storage and conversion efficiency.

Project description:Porous carbon spheres (CSs) have distinct advantages in energy storage and conversion applications. We report the preparation of highly monodisperse N-doped microporous CSs through the carbonization of polystyrene-based polymer spheres and subsequent activation. The N-doped microporous CSs have a remarkably high N-doping content, over 10%, and high BET surface area of 884.9 m2 g-1. We characterize the synergistic effects of the micropores and N doping on the energy storage performance of a supercapacitor electrode consisting of the CSs and on the performance in an electrocatalytic reaction of a CS counter electrode in a photovoltaic cell. The N-doped microporous CSs exhibit a maximum capacitance of 373 F g-1 at a current density of 0.2 Ag-1, a high capacitance retention up to 62% with a 10-fold increase in current density, and excellent stability over 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. A counter electrode consisting of N-doped microporous CSs was found to exhibit superior electrocatalytic behavior to an electrode consisting of conventional Pt nanoparticles. These CSs derived from polymer spheres synthesized by addition polymerization will be new platform materials with high electrochemical performance.

Solar reduction of carbon dioxide on copper-tin electrocatalysts with energy conversion efficiency near 20.

Project description:Copper catalysts modified with tin have been demonstrated to be selective for the electroreduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide. However, such catalysts require the precise control of tin loading amount. Here, we develop a copper/tin-oxide catalyst with dominant tin oxide surface being formed via a spontaneous exchange reaction between sputtered tin and copper oxide. Even though the surface of this catalyst is tin-rich, it achieves an excellent performance towards carbon monoxide production in a flow cell. This contrasts with copper/tin-oxide prepared via atomic layer deposition since it yields selectivity towards carbon monoxide only on a copper-rich surface. Mechanism studies reveal that the tin sites on the tin-rich copper/tin-oxide surface achieve a suitable binding with adsorbed carbon monoxide under the presence of copper. Powered by a triple-junction solar cell, the copper/tin-oxide based electrolyzer sets a new benchmark solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency of 19.9 percent with a Faradaic efficiency of 98.9 percent towards carbon monoxide under simulated standard air mass 1.5 global illumination.

Electrical energy storage using compressed gas in depleted hydraulically fractured wells.

Project description:Renewable forms of electricity generation like solar and wind require low-cost energy storage solutions to meet climate change deployment goals. Here, we explore the use of depleted hydraulically fractured ("fracked") oil and gas wells to store electrical energy in the form of compressed natural gas to be released to spin an expander/generator when electrical demand is high. Our reservoir model indicates that the same dual-porosity geological environment of fracked wells used to liberate hydrocarbons is also suitable for storing and releasing gas in a diurnal or seasonal cycle. Round-trip storage efficiency is calculated to be 40%-70% depending on the natural reservoir temperature. Levelized cost of storage is estimated to be $70-270/MWh, on par with pumped hydro storage. This study indicates that repurposed "fracked" wells could provide a much-needed low-cost seasonal energy storage solution at the TWh scale.

Hydrolysis of Lignocellulosic Biomass in Hot-Compressed Water with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide.

Project description:This study investigated the decomposition behavior of bamboo under hydrothermal and hydrolysis conditions with H2O/CO2 in a semicontinuous-flow reactor at 9.8 MPa. At 255 °C, with and without CO2, xylan in bamboo completely decomposed into xylo-oligosaccharide (XOD). The yield of glucan degradation products with CO2 was significantly higher compared with that under the hydrothermal reaction (25.7 vs 14.9 wt %, respectively). The reaction rate of glucan decomposition with CO2 was slightly higher than the rate of hydrothermal reaction (k H2O/CO2 /k H2O = 1.3). Increasing the fluid velocity of the hydrothermal reaction (3-10 mL/min) significantly accelerated the solubilization rate, but the ultimate yield of the soluble fraction was unchanged. The ultimate yield of the soluble fraction was slightly affected by physical effects. Hydrolysis with CO2 under severe conditions exhibited effective degradation of glucan. The catalytic activity of the H2O/CO2 system under hydrolysis can be explained by the system's chemical effect.

Super-Branched PdCu Alloy for Efficiently Converting Carbon Dioxide to Carbon Monoxide.

Project description:The alloying of noble metals with Cu is one of the most effective strategies for improving catalytic performance and reducing cost in electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reactions (CO2RR). Previous works usually focused on the influence of morphology and composition on the catalytic activity, but lacked the study of the valence state ratio of metals and the electron transfer behavior on alloys. In this work, PdCu-2 alloy (Pd/Cu molar ratio is 1:2) was obtained by a simple one-step solvothermal method, which can effectively convert CO2 to CO with a maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 85% at -0.9 V (vs. RHE). Then, the effect of the chemical state of Pd and Cu on the catalytic performance was investigated. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that the binding energy of Pd in PdCu alloy has a negative shift, which has affected the adsorption of key intermediates. When the proportion of oxidized state and zero-valent metal in the alloy is about 1:2, the PdCu alloy shows the best catalytic activity. In addition, the transient photovoltage (TPV) measurements further demonstrate that due to the introduction of Cu, the electron transfer rate of PdCu-2 becomes the slowest, which helps the accumulation of electrons on PdCu-2 and leads to the improvement of catalytic performance for electrocatalytic CO2RR. This work can provide more insights into the alloy catalysts of electrocatalytic CO2RR.

A new type of bladeless turbine for compressed gas energy storage system.

Project description:Nowadays, energy storage engineering is an important means to relieve the problem of energy shortage. In this investigation, we design a kind of vaneless turbine originating from a Tesla turbine with a diameter and an air gap of 250 mm and 0.5 mm, respectively. Importantly, such a vaneless turbine removes the feature of an air outlet in the middle and adopts other ways of entering and leaving on both sides, so as to strengthen the rotor, because there is no need for a large hole in the middle of the rotor. Furthermore, the rotor dynamics characteristics of the vaneless turbine are calculated by six different modes. We also obtain the critical speed in different modes. Moreover, the flow field performances, such as the velocity and pressure of fluid (air), are investigated using the finite element simulation method. In addition, the bench test is built to obtain the output characteristics of a vaneless turbine. The maximum output torque is about 5.56 Nm at 992 rpm, and the maximal rotational speed of the vaneless turbine can reach 3200 rpm. Our work provides new ideas and guidance for the design and research of the new generation of the vaneless turbine.

Microbial carbon use efficiency promotes global soil carbon storage.

Project description:Soils store more carbon than other terrestrial ecosystems1,2. How soil organic carbon (SOC) forms and persists remains uncertain1,3, which makes it challenging to understand how it will respond to climatic change3,4. It has been suggested that soil microorganisms play an important role in SOC formation, preservation and loss5-7. Although microorganisms affect the accumulation and loss of soil organic matter through many pathways4,6,8-11, microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) is an integrative metric that can capture the balance of these processes12,13. Although CUE has the potential to act as a predictor of variation in SOC storage, the role of CUE in SOC persistence remains unresolved7,14,15. Here we examine the relationship between CUE and the preservation of SOC, and interactions with climate, vegetation and edaphic properties, using a combination of global-scale datasets, a microbial-process explicit model, data assimilation, deep learning and meta-analysis. We find that CUE is at least four times as important as other evaluated factors, such as carbon input, decomposition or vertical transport, in determining SOC storage and its spatial variation across the globe. In addition, CUE shows a positive correlation with SOC content. Our findings point to microbial CUE as a major determinant of global SOC storage. Understanding the microbial processes underlying CUE and their environmental dependence may help the prediction of SOC feedback to a changing climate.

Post-synthetically modified metal-porphyrin framework GaTCPP for carbon dioxide adsorption and energy storage in Li-S batteries.

Project description:Lithium-sulphur batteries attract increasing interest due to their high theoretical specific capacity, advantageous economy, and "eco-friendliness". In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF) GaTCPP containing a porphyrinic base ligand was used as a conductive additive for sulphur. GaTCPP was synthesized, characterized, and post-synthetically modified by the transition metal ions (Co2+/Ni2+). The doping of GaTCPP ensured an increase in the carbon dioxide adsorption capacities, which were measured under different conditions. Post-synthetic modification of GaTCPP with Co2+/Ni2+ ions has been shown to increase carbon dioxide storage capacity from 22.8 wt% for unmodified material to 23.1 wt% and 26.5 wt% at 0 °C and 1 bar for Co2+ and Ni2+-doped analogues, respectively. As a conductive part of cathode material, MOFs displayed successful sulphur capture and encapsulation proven by stable charge/discharge cycle performances, high-capacity retention, and coulombic efficiency. The electrodes with pristine GaTCPP showed a discharge capacity of 699 mA h g-1 at 0.2C in the fiftieth cycle. However, the doping of GaTCPP by Ni2+ has a positive impact on the electrochemical properties, the capacity increased to 778 mA h g-1 in the fiftieth cycle at 0.2C.

The precipitation is completely reversible and rapid within small changes of pressure i.e. liquid phase CO2 composition. High pressure phase equilibrium, high pressure NMR, and solid state NMR have been utilized to understand the separation phenomena.
