Light-induced dilation in nanosheets of charge-transfer complexes.

ABSTRACT: We report the observation of a sizable photostrictive effect of 5.7% with fast, submillisecond response times, arising from a light-induced lattice dilation of a molecular nanosheet, composed of the molecular charge-transfer compound dibenzotetrathiafulvalene (DBTTF) and C₆₀ An interfacial self-assembly approach is introduced for the thickness-controlled growth of the thin films. From photoabsorption measurements, molecular simulations, and electronic structure calculations, we suggest that photostriction within these films arises from a transformation in the molecular structure of constituent molecules upon photoinduced charge transfer, as well as the accommodation of free charge carriers within the material. Additionally, we find that the photostrictive properties of the nanosheets are thickness-dependent, a phenomenon that we suggest arises from surface-induced conformational disorder in the molecular components of the film. Moreover, because of the molecular structure in the films, which results largely from interactions between the constituent π-systems and the sulfur atoms of DBTTF, the optoelectronic properties are found to be anisotropic. This work enables the fabrication of 2D molecular charge-transfer nanosheets with tunable thicknesses and properties, suitable for a wide range of applications in flexible electronic technologies.

Project description:Improving the photo-induced charge transfer (PICT) efficiency is the key factor for boosting the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance of semiconductor nanomaterials. Introducing plentiful surface defect states in porous ZnO nanosheets (d-ZnO NSs) effectively provides additional charge transfer routes for highly efficient PICT within the substrate-molecule system. Significantly, an interesting phenomenon of low temperature-boosted SERS activity of these d-ZnO NSs is consequently observed. The enhanced SERS activity can be attributed to the efficient PICT processes due to the significant reduction of non-radiative recombination of surface defects at a low temperature. This is carefully investigated through combining in situ low-temperature SERS measurements with temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy. Our results clearly demonstrate that the weakened lattice thermal vibration at a low temperature effectively suppresses the phonon-assisted relaxation and reduces carrier traps, resulting in the increase of PL intensity. The decreased traps of photo-induced electrons at surface defect states effectively facilitate the PICT efficiency within the substrate-molecule system. An ultrahigh enhancement factor of 7.7 × 105 and low limit of detection (1 × 10-7 M) for a 4-mercaptopyridine molecule at a temperature of 77 K are successfully obtained. More importantly, the low temperature-enhanced SERS effect is also obtainable in other metal oxide semiconductors, such as d-TiO2 and d-Cu2O nanoparticles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the low temperature-boosted SERS activity of semiconductors has been observed. This study not only provides a deep insight into the chemical SERS mechanism, but also develops a novel strategy for improving semiconductor SERS sensitivity. The strong SERS activity at a low temperature reported here may open new avenues for developing non-metal SERS substrates with new functionalities, especially for the research on cryogenic sensing and hypothermal medicine.

Project description:In any physicochemical process in liquids, the dynamical response of the solvent to the solutes out of equilibrium plays a crucial role in the rates and products: the solvent molecules react to the changes in volume and electron density of the solutes to minimize the free energy of the solution, thus modulating the activation barriers and stabilizing (or destabilizing) intermediate states. In charge transfer (CT) processes in polar solvents, the response of the solvent always assists the formation of charge separation states by stabilizing the energy of the localized charges. A deep understanding of the solvation mechanisms and time scales is therefore essential for a correct description of any photochemical process in dense phase and for designing molecular devices based on photosensitizers with CT excited states. In the last two decades, with the advent of ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopies, microscopic models describing the relevant case of polar solvation (where both the solvent and the solute molecules have a permanent electric dipole and the mutual interaction is mainly dipole-dipole) have dramatically progressed. Regardless of the details of each model, they all assume that the effect of the electrostatic fields of the solvent molecules on the internal electronic dynamics of the solute are perturbative and that the solvent-solute coupling is mainly an electrostatic interaction between the constant permanent dipoles of the solute and the solvent molecules. This well-established picture has proven to quantitatively rationalize spectroscopic effects of environmental and electric dynamics (time-resolved Stokes shifts, inhomogeneous broadening, etc.). However, recent computational and experimental studies, including ours, have shown that further improvement is required. Indeed, in the last years we investigated several molecular complexes exhibiting photoexcited CT states, and we found that the current description of the formation and stabilization of CT states in an important group of molecules such as transition metal complexes is inaccurate. In particular, we proved that the solvent molecules are not just spectators of intramolecular electron density redistribution but significantly modulate it. Our results solicit further development of quantum mechanics computational methods to treat the solute and (at least) the closest solvent molecules including the nonperturbative treatment of the effects of local electrostatics and direct solvent-solute interactions to describe the dynamical changes of the solute excited states during the solvent response.
