Crystal structure of calcium perchlorate anhydrate, Ca(ClO4)2, from laboratory powder X-ray diffraction data.

ABSTRACT: The crystal structure of calcium perchlorate anhydrate was determined from laboratory X-ray powder diffraction data. The title compound was obtained by heating hydrated calcium perchlorate [Ca(ClO4)2·xH2O] at 623?K in air for 12?h. It crystallizes in the ortho-rhom-bic space group Pbca and is isotypic with Ca(AlD4)2. The asymmetric unit contains one Ca, two Cl and eight O sites, all on general sites (Wyckoff position 8c). The crystal structure consists of isolated ClO4- tetra-hedra and Ca2+ cations. The Ca2+ cation is coordinated by eight O atoms of eight symmetry-related ClO4- tetra-hedra within a distorted square-anti-prismatic environment.

Project description:The previously unknown crystal structure of barium perchlorate anhydrate, determined and refined from laboratory X-ray powder diffraction data, represents a new structure type. The title compound was obtained by heating hydrated barium perchlorate [Ba(ClO4)2·xH2O] at 423?K in vacuo for 6?h. It crystallizes in the ortho-rhom-bic space group Fddd. The asymmetric unit contains one Ba (site symmetry 222 on special position 8a), one Cl (site symmetry 2 on special position 16f) and two O sites (on general positions 32h). The structure can be described as a three-dimensional polyhedral network resulting from the corner- and edge-sharing of BaO12 polyhedra and ClO4 tetra-hedra. Each BaO12 polyhedron shares corners with eight ClO4 tetra-hedra, and edges with two ClO4 tetra-hedra. Each ClO4 tetra-hedron shares corners with four BaO12 polyhedra, and an edge with the other BaO12 polyhedron.

Project description:The crystal structure of strontium perchlorate anhydrate, Sr(ClO4)2, was determined and refined from laboratory powder X-ray diffraction data. The material was obtained by dehydration of Sr(ClO4)2·3H2O at 523?K for two weeks. It crystallizes in the ortho-rhom-bic space group Pbca and is isotypic with Ca(AlD4)2 and Ca(ClO4)2. The asymmetric unit contains one Sr, two Cl and eight O sites, all on general positions (Wyckoff position 8c). The crystal structure consists of Sr2+ cations and isolated ClO4 - tetra-hedra. The Sr2+ cation is coordinated by eight O atoms from eight ClO4 - tetra-hedra. The validity of the crystal structure model for Sr(ClO4)2 anhydrate was confirmed by the bond valence method.

Crystal structures of Ca(ClO4)2·4H2O and Ca(ClO4)2·6H2O.

Project description:The title compounds, calcium perchlorate tetra-hydrate and calcium perchlorate hexa-hydrate, were crystallized at low temperatures according to the solid-liquid phase diagram. The structure of the tetra-hydrate consists of one Ca(2+) cation eightfold coordinated in a square-anti-prismatic fashion by four water mol-ecules and four O atoms of four perchlorate tetra-hedra, forming chains parallel to [01-1] by sharing corners of the ClO4 tetra-hedra. The structure of the hexa-hydrate contains two different Ca(2+) cations, each coordinated by six water mol-ecules and two O atoms of two perchlorate tetra-hedra, forming [Ca(H2O)6(ClO4)]2 dimers by sharing two ClO4 tetra-hedra. The dimers are arranged in sheets parallel (001) and alternate with layers of non-coordinating ClO4 tetra-hedra. O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the water mol-ecules as donor and ClO4 tetra-hedra and water mol-ecules as acceptor groups lead to the formation of a three-dimensional network in the two structures. Ca(ClO4)2·6H2O was refined as a two-component inversion twin, with an approximate twin component ratio of 1:1 in each of the two structures.

The two independent Rb+ cations are seven- and eight-coordinate, with bond-valence sums of 0.99 and 0.92 valence units. The coordination polyhedra share edges and corners to form a three-dimensional framework. The only hydrogen bond is an intra-molecular one between the hy-droxy group and the central carboxyl-ate, with graph set S(5). The hydro-phobic methyl-ene groups lie in pockets in the framework.

The un-ionized carb-oxy-lic acid group forms helical chains of very strong hydrogen bonds (O?O ? 2.42?Å) along the b axis. The hy-droxy group participates in a chain of intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds along the c axis. These hydrogen bonds result in corrugated hydrogen-bonded layers in the bc plane. The Rb+ cations are six-coordinate, and share edges and corners to form layers in the ab plane. The inter-layer contacts are composed of the hydro-phobic methyl-ene groups.

The Cs+ cation is nine-coordinate, with a bond-valence sum of 0.92 valence units. The CsO9 coordination polyhedra share edges and corners to form a three-dimensional framework. The citrate anion is located on a mirror plane. Its central hy-droxy/carboxyl-ate O-H?O hydrogen bond is short, and (unusually) inter-molecular. The centrosymmetric end-end carboxyl-ate hydrogen bond is exceptionally short (O?O = 2.416?Å) and strong. These hydrogen bonds contribute 16.5 and 21.7 kcal mol-1, respectively, to the crystal energy. The hydro-phobic methyl-ene groups occupy pockets in the framework.

Project description:The crystal structure of Pigment Red 254 [P.R. 254, C18H10Cl2N2O2; systematic name: 3,6-bis-(4-chloro-phen-yl)-2,5-di-hydro-pyrrolo-[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione] was solved from laboratory X-ray powder diffraction data using the simulated annealing method followed by Rietveld refinement because the very low solubility of the pigment in all solvents impedes the growth of single crystals suitable for X-ray analysis. The mol-ecule lies across an inversion center. The dihedral angle between the benzene ring and the pyrrole ring in the unique part of the mol-ecule is 11.1 (2)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked via N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming chains along [110] incorporating R22(8) rings.
