Bremsstrahlung spectrum data for thick Al, Ti, Zr, Mo, and W targets by keV electron impact.

ABSTRACT: The data presented in this paper are related to the research paper entitled "Bremsstrahlung spectra produced by kilovolt electron impact on thick targets" [1]. The dataset includes our measured bremsstrahlung spectra on Al, Ti, Zr, Mo, and W thick targets at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25?keV electron impact. In this paper we present the experimental method and make the dataset publicly available to enable extended analyses or reuse. The dataset is available on mendeley data public repository at http://dx.doi.org/10.17632/5zx3459bj3.1.

Achievement of Room Temperature Superelasticity in Ti-Mo-Al Alloy System via Manipulation of ω Phase Stability.

Project description:The achievement of room-temperature (RT) superelasticity in a Ti-Mo-Al ternary alloy system through the addition of a relatively high concentration of Al to manipulate the phase stability of the ω phase is realized in this study. The composition of the Ti-6 mol% Mo (Ti-11.34 mass% Mo) alloy was designated as the starting alloy, while 5 mol% Al (=2.71 mass% Al) and 10 mol% Al (=5.54 mass% Al) were introduced to promote their superelastic behavior. Among the alloys, Ti-6 mol% Mo-10 mol% Al alloy, which was investigated for the very first time in this work, performed the best in terms of superelasticity. On the other hand, Ti-6 mol% Mo and Ti-6 mol% Mo-5 mol% Al alloys exhibited a shape memory effect upon heating. It is worth mentioning that in the transmission electron microscopy observation, ω phase, which appeared along with β-parent phase, was significantly suppressed as Al concentration was elevated up to 10 mol%. Therefore, the conventional difficulties of the inhibited RT superelasticity were successfully revealed by regulating the number density of the ω phase below a threshold.

Pronounced Plasticity Caused by Phase Separation and β-relaxation Synergistically in Zr-Cu-Al-Mo Bulk Metallic Glasses.

Project description:Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are known to have extraordinary merits such as ultrahigh strength and dynamic toughness etc. but tied to the detrimental brittleness, which has become a critical issue to the engineering application and understanding the glass nature. In this article, we report a new class of Zr-Cu-Al-Mo BMGs with extraordinary plastic strain above 20%. "Work-hardening" effect after yielding in a wide range of plastic deformation process has been detected for this kind of BMGs. Compositional heterogeneity, which can be classified into ZrMo- and Cu-rich zones, was differentiated in this kind of BMG. Pronounced humps have been observed on the high frequency kinetic spectrum in Mo containing BMGs, which is the indicator of β-relaxation transition. The underlying mechanism for the excellent plastic deforming ability of this class of BMGs is ascribed to the synergistic effects of soft ZrMo-rich glass formed through phase separation and abundant flow units which related to β-relaxation.

Optimal Design of High-Strength Ti?Al?V?Zr Alloys through a Combinatorial Approach.

Project description:The influence of various Zr contents (0?45 wt.%) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V alloy was investigated through a combinatorial approach. The diffusion multiples of Ti6Al4V?Ti6Al4V20Fe?Ti6Al4V20Cr?Ti6Al4V20Mo?Ti6Al4V45Zr were manufactured and diffusion-annealed to obtain a large composition space. Scanning electron microscopy, electron probe micro-analysis, and a microhardness system were combined to determine the relationships among the composition, microstructure, and hardness of these alloys. The Ti?6Al?4V?30Zr alloy was found to contain the thinnest ? lath and showed peak hardness. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope results indicated that after quenching from the ?-field, the metastable ??-phase formed; moreover, at the secondary aging stage, the metastable ??-phase acted as precursor nucleation sites for the stable ?-phase. The bulk Ti6Al4V30Zr alloy was manufactured. After aging at 550 °C, the alloy showed excellent balance of strength and ductility, and the tensile strength was 1464 MPa with a moderate elongation (8.3%). As the aging temperature increased, the tensile strength and yield strength of the alloys rose, but the total elongation decreased. The lamella thickness and volume fraction of the ?-phase were the major factors that had great impacts on the mechanical properties.

How 10 at% Al Addition in the Ti-V-Zr-Nb High-Entropy Alloy Changes Hydrogen Sorption Properties.

Project description:Al0.10Ti0.30V0.25Zr0.10Nb0.25 was prepared to evaluate the effect of 10% aluminum into the previously reported quaternary alloy, Ti0.325V0.275Zr0.125Nb0.275. The as-cast quinary alloy formed a single-phase body centered cubic solid solution and transformed into a body centered tetragonal after hydrogenation. The alloy had a storage capacity of 1.6 H/M (2.6 wt.%) with fast absorption kinetics at room temperature, reaching full capacity within the first 10 min. The major improvements of Al addition (10%) were related to the desorption and cycling properties of the material. The temperature for hydrogen release was significantly decreased by around 100 °C, and the quinary alloy showed superior cycling stability and higher reversible storage capacity than its quaternary counterpart, 94% and 85% of their respective initial capacity, after 20 hydrogenation cycles without phase decomposition.

Limit of the electrostatic doping in two-dimensional electron gases of LaXO?(X = Al, Ti)/SrTiO?.

Project description:In LaTiO?/SrTiO? and LaAlO?/SrTiO? heterostructures, the bending of the SrTiO? conduction band at the interface forms a quantum well that contains a superconducting two-dimensional electron gas (2-DEG). Its carrier density and electronic properties, such as superconductivity and Rashba spin-orbit coupling can be controlled by electrostatic gating. In this article we show that the Fermi energy lies intrinsically near the top of the quantum well. Beyond a filling threshold, electrons added by electrostatic gating escape from the well, hence limiting the possibility to reach a highly-doped regime. This leads to an irreversible doping regime where all the electronic properties of the 2-DEG, such as its resistivity and its superconducting transition temperature, saturate. The escape mechanism can be described by the simple analytical model we propose.

Effect of Zr and Ti Addition and Aging Treatment on the Microstructure and Tensile Properties of Al-2%Cu-Based Alloys.

Project description:The present work investigated the effect of aging treatment on the microstructure and tensile properties of an Al-2%Cu base alloy containing various additions of Zr and other alloying elements. Aging was carried out at temperatures of 180-300 °C for different aging times at each temperature. The tensile properties indicated that Zr additions improved the strength of the base alloy, especially at high Zr levels at 180 °C. At the 220 °C aging temperature, however, while Zr addition did not have a beneficial effect on the alloy strength, the ductility was found to improve. Zr-Ti combined additions had a significant effect on the microstructure of the base alloy, as the morphology of the α-Al grains transformed into a non-dendritic morphology, and the grain size decreased sharply. These effects were at their maximum at 180 °C and 0.5 wt% Zr addition. Moreover, the Zr-containing alloys aged at higher temperatures, such as 220 °C and 240 °C, maintained a noticeably higher level of strength over the base alloy aged at the same temperatures. Quality index charts based on the tensile test data also reflected an improvement in alloy quality and strength with Zr-Ti combined additions.

Measuring Heat Production from Burning Al/Zr and Al/Mg/Zr Composite Particles in a Custom Micro-Bomb Calorimeter.

Project description:Al:Zr, Al-8Mg:Zr, and Al-38Mg:Zr nanocomposite particles fabricated by physical vapor deposition (PVD) and ball milling were reacted in 1 atm of pure O2 within a custom, highly-sensitive micro-bomb calorimeter. The heats of combustion were compared to examine the effect of particle size and composition on combustion efficiency under room temperature and in a fixed volume. All particles yielded ~60-70% of their theoretical maximum heat of combustion and exhibited an increase in heat over composite thin films of similar compositions, which is attributed to an increase in the surface area to volume ratio. The effect of particle size and geometry are mitigated owing to the sintering of the particles within the crucible, implying the importance of particle dispersion for enhanced performance. Vaporization of the metal species may transition between two diffusion flame species (Mg to Al). As Mg content is increased, more vaporization may occur at lower temperatures, leading to an additional stage of sintering. Physically intermixed Al and Mg oxides have been observed coating the surface of the particles, which implies a continuous transition of these vaporization processes. Such nano-oxides imply high vapor-flame combustion temperatures (>2700 K) and suggest viability for agent defeat applications.

Electron Trap Depths in Cubic Lutetium Oxide Doped with Pr and Ti, Zr or Hf─From Ab Initio Multiconfigurational Calculations.

Project description:We propose a universal approach to model intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) and metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) transitions between ions in solids. The approach relies on already well-known and reliable ab initio RASSCF/CASPT2/RASSI-SO calculations for a series of emission center coordination geometries (restricted active space self-consistent field, complete active space second-order perturbation theory, and restricted active space state interaction with spin-orbit coupling). Embedding with ab initio model potentials (AIMPs) is used to represent the crystal lattice. We propose a way to construct the geometries via interpolation of the coordinates obtained using solid-state density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the structures where the activator metal is at specific oxidation (charge) states of interest. The approach thus takes the best of two worlds: the precision of the embedded cluster calculations (including localized excited states) and the geometries from DFT, where the effects of ionic radii mismatch (and eventual nearby defects) can be modeled explicitly. The method is applied to the Pr activator and Ti, Zr, Hf codopants in cubic Lu2O3, in which the said ions are used to obtain energy storage and thermoluminescence properties. Electron trap charging and discharging mechanisms (not involving a conduction band) are discussed in the context of the IVCT and MMCT role in them. Trap depths and trap quenching pathways are analyzed.

Photon, Electron and Secondary Ion Emission from Single C(60) keV Impacts.

Project description:This paper presents the first observation of coincidental emission of photons, electrons and secondary ions from individual C(60) keV impacts. An increase in photon, electron and secondary ion yields is observed as a function of C(60) projectile energy. The effect of target structure/composition on photon and electron emissions at the nanometer level is shown for a CsI target. The time-resolved photon emission may be characterized by a fast component emission in the UV-Vis range with a short decay time, while the electron and secondary ion emission follow a Poisson distribution.

Effect of Zr Content on Phase Stability, Deformation Behavior, and Young's Modulus in Ti-Nb-Zr Alloys.

Project description:Ti alloys have attracted continuing research attention as promising biomaterials due to their superior corrosion resistance and biocompatibility and excellent mechanical properties. Metastable ?-type Ti alloys also provide several unique properties such as low Young's modulus, shape memory effect, and superelasticity. Such unique properties are predominantly attributed to the phase stability and reversible martensitic transformation. In this study, the effects of the Nb and Zr contents on phase constitution, transformation temperature, deformation behavior, and Young's modulus were investigated. Ti-Nb and Ti-Nb-Zr alloys over a wide composition range, i.e., Ti-(18-40)Nb, Ti-(15-40)Nb-4Zr, Ti-(16-40)Nb-8Zr, Ti-(15-40)Nb-12Zr, Ti-(12-17)Nb-18Zr, were fabricated and their properties were characterized. The phase boundary between the ? phase and the ?'' martensite phase was clarified. The lower limit content of Nb to suppress the martensitic transformation and to obtain a single ? phase at room temperature decreased with increasing Zr content. The Ti-25Nb, Ti-22Nb-4Zr, Ti-19Nb-8Zr, Ti-17Nb-12Zr and Ti-14Nb-18Zr alloys exhibit the lowest Young's modulus among Ti-Nb-Zr alloys with Zr content of 0, 4, 8, 12, and 18 at.%, respectively. Particularly, the Ti-14Nb-18Zr alloy exhibits a very low Young's modulus less than 40 GPa. Correlation among alloy composition, phase stability, and Young's modulus was discussed.
