Demonstration of a terahertz pure vector beam by tailoring geometric phase.

ABSTRACT: We demonstrate the creation of a vector beam by tailoring geometric phase of left- and right- circularly polarized beams. Such a vector beam with a uniform phase has not been demonstrated before because a vortex phase remains in the beam. We focus on vortex phase cancellation to generate vector beams in terahertz regions, and measure the geometric phase of the beam and its spatial distribution of polarization. We conduct proof-of-principle experiments for producing a vector beam with radial polarization and uniform phase at 0.36?THz. We determine the vortex phase of the vector beam to be below 4%, thus highlighting the extendibility and availability of the proposed concept to the super broadband spectral region from ultraviolet to terahertz. The extended range of our proposed techniques could lead to breakthroughs in the fields of microscopy, chiral nano-materials, and quantum information science.

Tailoring terahertz plasmons with silver nanorod arrays

Project description:Plasmonic materials that strongly interact with light are ideal candidates for designing subwavelength photonic devices. We report on direct coupling of terahertz waves in metallic nanorods by observing the resonant transmission of surface plasmon polariton waves through lithographically patterned films of silver nanorod (100?nm in diameter) micro-hole arrays. The best enhancement in surface plasmon resonant transmission is obtained when the nanorods are perfectly aligned with the electric field direction of the linearly polarized terahertz wave. This unique polarization-dependent propagation of surface plasmons in structures fabricated from nanorod films offers promising device applications. We conclude that the anisotropy of nanoscale metallic rod arrays imparts a material anisotropy relevant at the microscale that may be utilized for the fabrication of plasmonic and metamaterial based devices for operation at terahertz frequencies.

Tunable Spin dependent beam shift by simultaneously tailoring geometric and dynamical phases of light in inhomogeneous anisotropic medium.

Project description:Spin orbit interaction and the resulting Spin Hall effect of light are under recent intensive investigations because of their fundamental nature and potential applications. Here, we report an interesting manifestation of spin Hall effect of light and demonstrate its tunability in an inhomogeneous anisotropic medium exhibiting spatially varying retardance level. In our system, the beam shift occurs only for one circular polarization mode keeping the other orthogonal mode unaffected, which is shown to arise due to the combined spatial gradients of the geometric phase and the dynamical phase of light. The constituent two orthogonal circular polarization modes of an input linearly polarized light evolve in different trajectories, eventually manifesting as a large and tunable spin separation. The spin dependent beam shift and the demonstrated principle of simultaneously tailoring space-varying geometric and dynamical phase of light for achieving its tunability (of both magnitude and direction), may provide an attractive route towards development of spin-optical devices.

Vector polymorphic beam.

Project description:A scalar polymorphic beam is designed with independent control of its intensity and phase along a strongly focused laser curve of arbitrary shape. This kind of beam has been found crucial in the creation of freestyle laser traps able to confine and drive the motion of micro/nano-particles along reconfigurable 3D trajectories in real time. Here, we present and experimentally prove the concept of vector polymorphic beam adding the benefit of independent design of the light polarization along arbitrary curves. In particular, we consider polarization shaped tangential and orthogonal to the curve that are of high interest in optical manipulation and laser micromachining. The vector polymorphic beam is described by a surprisingly simple closed-form expression and can be easily generated by using a computer generated hologram.

Geometric metasurface enabling polarization independent beam splitting.

Project description:A polarization independent holographic beam splitter that generates equal-intensity beams based on geometric metasurface is demonstrated. Although conventional geometric metasurfaces have the advantages of working over a broad frequency range and having intuitive design principles, geometric metasurfaces have the limitation that they only work for circular polarization. In this work, Fourier holography is used to overcome this limitation. A perfect overlap resulting from the origin-symmetry of the encoded image enables polarization independent operation of geometric metasurfaces. The designed metasurface beam splitter is experimentally demonstrated by using hydrogenated amorphous silicon, and the device performs consistent beam splitting regardless of incident polarizations as well as wavelengths. Our device can be applied to generate equal-intensity beams for entangled photon light sources in quantum optics, and the design approach provides a way to develop ultra-thin broadband polarization independent components for modern optics.

On terahertz pulsed broadband Gauss-Bessel beam free-space propagation.

Project description:Terahertz pulse time-domain holography is the ultimate technique allowing the evaluating a propagation of pulse broadband terahertz wavefronts and analyze their spatial, temporal and spectral evolution. We have numerically analyzed pulsed broadband terahertz Gauss-Bessel beam's both spatio-temporal and spatio-spectral evolution in the non-paraxial approach. We have characterized two-dimensional spatio-temporal beam behavior and demonstrated all stages of pulse reshaping during the propagation, including X-shape pulse forming. The reshaping is also illustrated by the energy transfer dynamics, where the pulse energy flows from leading edge to trailing edge. This behavior illustrates strong spatio-temporal coupling effect when spatio-temporal distribution of Bessel beam's wavefront depends on propagation distance. The spatio-temporal and spatio-spectral profiles for different spectral components clearly illustrate the model where the Bessel beam's wavefront at the exit from the axicon can be divided into radial segments for which the wave vectors intersect. Phase velocity via propagation distance is estimated and compared with existing experimantal results. Results of the phase velocity calculation depend strongly on distance increment value, thus demonstrating superluminal or subluminal behavior.

Demonstration of beam steering via dipole-coupled plasmonic spiral antenna.

Project description:Optical antennas have been utilized to tailor the emission properties of nanoscale emitters in terms of the intensity, directivity and polarization. In this letter, we further explore the capability of beam steering via the use a spiral plasmonic structure as a transmitting antenna. According to both numerical simulation and experimental observations, the beaming direction can be steered through introducing a displacement of the feeding point to the spiral antenna from the geometrical center. For a 3-turn Archimedes' spiral antenna, experimental results show that steering angles of 3° and 7° are obtainable when the excitation location is transversally shifted from the center by a displacement of 200 nm and 500 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the emitted photons carry spin angular momentum determined by the chirality of the spiral optical antenna. A steerable nanoscale spin photon source may find important applications in single molecule sensing, quantum optical information processing and integrated photonic circuits.

Demonstration of a beam loaded nanocoulomb-class laser wakefield accelerator.

Project description:Laser-plasma wakefield accelerators have seen tremendous progress, now capable of producing quasi-monoenergetic electron beams in the GeV energy range with few-femtoseconds bunch duration. Scaling these accelerators to the nanocoulomb range would yield hundreds of kiloamperes peak current and stimulate the next generation of radiation sources covering high-field THz, high-brightness X-ray and γ-ray sources, compact free-electron lasers and laboratory-size beam-driven plasma accelerators. However, accelerators generating such currents operate in the beam loading regime where the accelerating field is strongly modified by the self-fields of the injected bunch, potentially deteriorating key beam parameters. Here we demonstrate that, if appropriately controlled, the beam loading effect can be employed to improve the accelerator's performance. Self-truncated ionization injection enables loading of unprecedented charges of ∼0.5 nC within a mono-energetic peak. As the energy balance is reached, we show that the accelerator operates at the theoretically predicted optimal loading condition and the final energy spread is minimized.Higher beam quality and stability are desired in laser-plasma accelerators for their applications in compact light sources. Here the authors demonstrate in laser plasma wakefield electron acceleration that the beam loading effect can be employed to improve beam quality by controlling the beam charge.

Demonstration of flat-top beam illumination in widefield multiphoton microscopy.

Project description:Multiphoton microscopy provides a suitable technique for imaging biological tissues with submicrometer resolution. Usually a Gaussian beam (GB) is used for illumination, leading to a reduced power efficiency in the multiphoton response and vignetting for a square-shaped imaging area. A flat-top beam (FTB) provides a uniform spatial intensity distribution that equalizes the probability of a multiphoton effect across the imaging area. We employ a customized widefield multiphoton microscope to compare the performance of a square-shaped FTB illumination with that based on using a GB, for both two-photon fluorescence (TPF) and second-harmonic generation (SHG) imaging. The variation in signal-to-noise ratio across TPF images of fluorescent dyes spans ∼5.6 dB for the GB and ∼1.2 dB for the FTB illumination, respectively. For the GB modality, TPF images of mouse colon and Convallaria root, and SHG images of chicken tendon and human breast biopsy tissue showcase ∼20 % area that are not imaged due to either insufficient or lack of illumination. For quantitative analysis that depends on the illuminated area, this effect can potentially lead to inaccuracies. This work emphasizes the applicability of FTB illumination to multiphoton applications.

Tailoring the AAV2 capsid vector for bone-targeting.

Project description:BackgroundTargeting specific tissues remains a major challenge to the promise of gene therapy. For example, several strategies have failed to target adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) vectors, to bone. We have evaluated in vitro and in vivo the affinity of an AAV2 vector to bone matrix, hydroxyapatite (HA) to treat Mucopolysacccharidosis IVA.MethodsTo increase vector affinity to HA, an aspartic acid octapeptide (D8) was inserted immediately after the N-terminal region of the VP2 capsid protein. The modified vector had physical titers and transduction efficiencies comparable to the unmodified vector.ResultsThe bone-targeting vector had significantly higher HA affinity and vector genome copies in bone than the unmodified vector. The modified vector was also released from HA, and its enzyme activity in bone, 3 months post infusion, was 4.7-fold higher than the unmodified vector.ConclusionInserting a bone-targeting peptide into the vector capsid increases gene delivery and expression in the bone without decreasing enzyme expression. This approach could be a novel strategy to treat systemic bone diseases.

Demonstration of sub-luminal propagation of single-cycle terahertz pulses for particle acceleration.

Project description:The sub-luminal phase velocity of electromagnetic waves in free space is generally unobtainable, being closely linked to forbidden faster than light group velocities. The requirement of sub-luminal phase-velocity in laser-driven particle acceleration schemes imposes a limit on the total acceleration achievable in free space, and necessitates the use of dispersive structures or waveguides for extending the field-particle interaction. We demonstrate a travelling source approach that overcomes the sub-luminal propagation limits. The approach exploits ultrafast optical sources with slow group velocity propagation, and a group-to-phase front conversion through nonlinear optical interaction. The concept is demonstrated with two terahertz generation processes, nonlinear optical rectification and current-surge rectification. We report measurements of longitudinally polarised single-cycle electric fields with phase and group velocity between 0.77c and 1.75c. The ability to scale to multi-megavolt-per-metre field strengths is demonstrated. Our approach paves the way towards the realisation of cheap and compact particle accelerators with femtosecond scale control of particles.Controlled generation of terahertz radiation with subluminal phase velocities is a key issue in laser-driven particle acceleration. Here, the authors demonstrate a travelling-source approach utilizing the group-to-phase front conversion to overcome the sub-luminal propagation limit.
