Data on three-year pesticide monitoring in ditches of the apple orchard region of Altes Land, Germany.

ABSTRACT: The data presented in this article are related to the research article 'Chemical and biological monitoring of the load of plant protection products and of zoocoenoses in ditches of the orchard region Altes Land' (Süß et al., 2006) [1], which is only available in the German language. The pesticide data presented here were acquired from four ditches (three ditches were located in apple orchards, and one ditch was located in a grassland region) between 2001 and 2003 (Lorenz et al., 2018) [2]. Two different monitoring strategies were applied: event-driven sampling after pesticide applications and weekly integrated sampling using automatic water samplers. A total of 70 active substances were monitored while farmers applied 25 active substances. This article describes the study sites and the analytical methods used to quantify the pesticides in the water samples. The field data set is publicly available at the OpenAgrar repository under https://doi.org/10.5073/20180213-144359 (Lorenz et al., 2018) [2].

Project description:We analyzed the reproductive success of eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis) nesting in apple orchards and non-orchard nest-boxes in southern Ontario, Canada, from 1988 to 2018. Using data from 2397 nest-boxes monitored at 20 orchard sites and 52 non-orchard sites, we first modeled phenological parameters typically linked to climate change across both site types. We found that the first egg of each brood was laid significantly earlier in the season each year over our 31-year study. Clutch initiation occurred 4 days earlier in the spring in 2018 compared to 1988. Average clutch size in the first or second brood did not change significantly during our 31-year study; however, clutches were significantly smaller in orchards compared to non-orchards (0.10 ± 0.03 fewer eggs between sites). Nests built in orchards were also at 6.1-fold greater risk of parasitism and 2.1-fold greater risk of depredation than nests in non-orchards. After accounting for depredation and nest parasitism, hatching success was still significantly lower in orchards than in non-orchards. Overall, hatching success was 4%-5% lower in orchards. The probability of successfully fledging did not differ significantly between site types. In 2012, a ban on use of the organophosphate insecticide azinphos-methyl in orchards was enacted in Canada. We did not find a difference in hatching or fledging success in orchards after the ban. In our assessment of available data, we conclude that any pesticide effect on hatching success of eastern bluebirds in sprayed orchards is most likely the consequence of long-term exposure to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) compounds in orchard soils and bioaccumulation in eggs rather than pesticides in use since regulation of DDT in the 1970s. Project description:Background The root-associated microbiome has been of keen research interest especially in the last decade due to the large potential for increasing overall plant performance in agricultural systems. Studies about spatio-temporal variation of the root-associated microbiome focused so far primarily on community-compositional changes of annual plants, while little is known about their perennial counterparts. The aim of this work was to get deep insight into the spatial patterns and temporal dynamics of the root associated microbiota of apple trees. Results The bacterial community structure in rhizospheric soil and endospheric root material from orchard-grown apple trees was characterized based on 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. At the small scale, the rhizosphere and endosphere bacterial communities shifted gradually with increasing root size diameter (PERMANOVA R2-values up to 0.359). At the larger scale, bulk soil heterogeneity introduced variation between tree individuals, especially in the rhizosphere microbiota, while the presence of a root pathogen was contributing to tree-to-tree variation in the endosphere microbiota. Moreover, the communities of both compartments underwent seasonal changes and displayed year-to-year variation (PERMANOVA R2-values of 0.454 and 0.371, respectively). Conclusions The apple tree root-associated microbiota can be spatially heterogeneous at field scale due to soil heterogeneities, which particularly influence the microbiota in the rhizosphere soil, resulting in tree-to-tree variation. The presence of pathogens can contribute to this variation, though primarily in the endosphere microbiota. Smaller-scale spatial heterogeneity is observed in the rhizosphere and endosphere microbiota related to root diameter, likely influenced by root traits and processes such as rhizodeposition. The microbiota is also subject to temporal variation, including seasonal effects and annual variation. As a consequence, responses of the tree root microbiota to further environmental cues should be considered in the context of this spatio-temporal variation.
