From vine to wine: Data on 87Sr/86Sr from rocks and soils as a geologic and pedologic characterisation of vineyards.

ABSTRACT: This data article describes the soils characterisation, bedrock geochemical composition and descriptive statistics of 87Sr/86Sr in wines, grape saps, labile fractions of soils (bio-available), whole soils, and bedrocks used to explore the Sr isotope conservation from rocks and soils to vine and wine. These data also describe the reproducibility of the isotopic composition of wine over four harvest years (2008-2011) on 11 selected experimental parcels (sampling point). The data reported in this paper are related to the research article (Braschi et al., 2018) [1].

Project description:The information presented here includes the results of strontium isotope analysis on 75 baseline samples from nine Fremont sites in Utah. The baseline samples are of lagomorphs and rodents with limited foraging ranges. The baseline ranges for each site were calculated with two standard deviations. Also included are the raw strontium isotopic data for 30 large game samples from Wolf Village, a Fremont site in Utah. Additional data include a map showing the location of the sites in this study, box plots portraying the local ranges of nine Fremont sites in Utah, and an individual value plot comparing the Wolf Village large game samples to the strontium baseline for the site. These data compliment the discussions and interpretations found in "Identifying Strontium Baselines and Large Game Animal Trade at Fremont Sites through Strontium Isotope (87Sr/86Sr) Analysis" [1].

The Provenance of Slovenian Milk Using 87Sr/86Sr Isotope Ratios.

Project description:This work presents the first use of Sr isotope ratios for determining the provenance of bovine milk from different regions of Slovenia. The analytical protocol for the determination of 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratio was optimised and applied to authentic milk samples. Considerable variability of 87Sr/86Sr ratios found in Slovenian milk reflects the substantial heterogeneity of the geological background of its origin. The results, although promising, cannot discount possible inter-annual or annual variation of the Sr isotopic composition of milk. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of groundwater and surface waters are in good correlation with milk, indicating that the Sr isotopic fingerprint in milk is reflective of cow drinking water. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio has the potential to distinguish between different milk production areas as long as these areas are characterised by geo-lithology. Discriminant analysis (DA) incorporating the elemental composition and stable isotopes of light elements showed that 87Sr/86Sr ratio together with δ13Ccas and δ15Ncas values have the main discrimination power to distinguish the Quaternary group (group 6) from the others. Group 1 (Cretaceous: Carbonate Rocks and Flysch) is associated with Br content, 1/Sr and δ18Ow values. The overall prediction ability was found to be 63.5%. Pairwise comparisons using OPLS-DA confirmed that diet and geologic parameters are important for the separation.

Investigating human geographic origins using dual-isotope (87Sr/86Sr, ?18O) assignment approaches.

Project description:Substantial progress in the application of multiple isotope analyses has greatly improved the ability to identify nonlocal individuals amongst archaeological populations over the past decades. More recently the development of large scale models of spatial isotopic variation (isoscapes) has contributed to improved geographic assignments of human and animal origins. Persistent challenges remain, however, in the accurate identification of individual geographic origins from skeletal isotope data in studies of human (and animal) migration and provenance. In an attempt to develop and test more standardized and quantitative approaches to geographic assignment of individual origins using isotopic data two methods, combining 87Sr/86Sr and ?18O isoscapes, are examined for the Circum-Caribbean region: 1) an Interval approach using a defined range of fixed isotopic variation per location; and 2) a Likelihood assignment approach using univariate and bivariate probability density functions. These two methods are tested with enamel isotope data from a modern sample of known origin from Caracas, Venezuela and further explored with two archaeological samples of unknown origin recovered from Cuba and Trinidad. The results emphasize both the potential and limitation of the different approaches. Validation tests on the known origin sample exclude most areas of the Circum-Caribbean region and correctly highlight Caracas as a possible place of origin with both approaches. The positive validation results clearly demonstrate the overall efficacy of a dual-isotope approach to geoprovenance. The accuracy and precision of geographic assignments may be further improved by better understanding of the relationships between environmental and biological isotope variation; continued development and refinement of relevant isoscapes; and the eventual incorporation of a broader array of isotope proxy data.

Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) 87Sr/86Sr isotope data from scythian Iron age barrows in Altai, Russia.

Project description:This paper reports LA-ICP-MS 87Sr/86Sr isotopic data collected from archaeological human remains uncovered in Manzherok region, Altai Republic, Russian Federation ("Mobility of nomads in central Asia: chronology and 87Sr/86Sr isotope evidence from the Pazyryk barrows of northern Altai, Russia" [1]. The skeletal remains derive from Scythian barrows dated to 6th - 3rd century BC located at Chultukov Log 1 cemetery. The Chultukov Log cemetery, located approximately 470km south of Novosibirsk, is considered the biggest nomadic burial ground in the Upper Altai and the Sayan Mountains. To enrich the information on prehistoric mobility of ancient nomadic populations in Central Asia, strontium isotopic data were collected using a Nu plasma (II) MC-ICP-MS equipped with ESI NWR193-based laser ablation system from premolar teeth of 8 adult individuals (4 males and 4 females), associated mainly with the Pazyryk culture. Additionally, we report bioavailable strontium data from single Equus caballus specimen (found at Chultukov Log 9 settlement) from Manzherok territory. In this study we have successfully applied and tested new in-depth decontamination protocol for total (<95%) removal of contaminants, necrotic tissue and dental calculus in archaeological materials based on a clinical irrigation procedure with NaOCl and EDTA. Strontium LA-ICP-MS 87Sr/86Sr isotopic data presented in this paper were obtained from prehistoric human teeth previously decontaminated according to this method. These data will provide valuable resources for isotopic analyses of prehistoric transportation systems in Central Asia, including residential mobility of ancient nomads inhabiting steppe zone, Mongolia and NW China.

Deducing the source and composition of rare earth mineralising fluids in carbonatites: insights from isotopic (C, O, 87Sr/86Sr) data from Kangankunde, Malawi.

Project description:Carbonatites host some of the largest and highest grade rare earth element (REE) deposits but the composition and source of their REE-mineralising fluids remains enigmatic. Using C, O and 87Sr/86Sr isotope data together with major and trace element compositions for the REE-rich Kangankunde carbonatite (Malawi), we show that the commonly observed, dark brown, Fe-rich carbonatite that hosts REE minerals in many carbonatites is decoupled from the REE mineral assemblage. REE-rich ferroan dolomite carbonatites, containing 8-15 wt% REE2O3, comprise assemblages of monazite-(Ce), strontianite and baryte forming hexagonal pseudomorphs after probable burbankite. The 87Sr/86Sr values (0.70302-0.70307) affirm a carbonatitic origin for these pseudomorph-forming fluids. Carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of strontianite, representing the REE mineral assemblage, indicate equilibrium between these assemblages and a carbonatite-derived, deuteric fluid between 250 and 400 °C (?18O + 3 to + 5‰VSMOW and ?13C - 3.5 to - 3.2‰VPDB). In contrast, dolomite in the same samples has similar ?13C values but much higher ?18O, corresponding to increasing degrees of exchange with low-temperature fluids (< 125 °C), causing exsolution of Fe oxides resulting in the dark colour of these rocks. REE-rich quartz rocks, which occur outside of the intrusion, have similar ?18O and 87Sr/86Sr to those of the main complex, indicating both are carbonatite-derived and, locally, REE mineralisation can extend up to 1.5 km away from the intrusion. Early, REE-poor apatite-bearing dolomite carbonatite (beforsite: ?18O + 7.7 to + 10.3‰ and ?13C -5.2 to -6.0‰; 87Sr/86Sr 0.70296-0.70298) is not directly linked with the REE mineralisation.

Who were the Hyksos? Challenging traditional narratives using strontium isotope (87Sr/86Sr) analysis of human remains from ancient Egypt.

Project description:A foreign dynasty, known as the Hyksos, ruled parts of Egypt between c. 1638-1530 BCE. Their origins are thought to be rooted in the Near East, which is supported by architectural features and grave accoutrements of Tell el-Dabca. In this former Hyksos capital in the Eastern Nile Delta, burial culture is characterized by a blend of Egyptian and Near Eastern elements. However, investigations are still ongoing as to where the Hyksos came from and how they rose to power. The aim of this study is to elucidate the question of possible provenience. We present the results of strontium isotope (87Sr/86Sr) ratios of human tooth enamel (n = 75) from Tell el-Dabca, focusing on comparing pre- and during Hyksos rule and sex-based differences. An influx of non-locals can be observed in the pre-Hyksos period (12th and 13th Dynasties, c. 1991-1649 BCE) during the constitution of this important harbor town, while the number of individuals already born in the Delta is larger during the Hyksos period. This is consistent with the supposition that, while the ruling class had Near Eastern origins, the Hyksos' rise to power was not the result of an invasion, as popularly theorized, but an internal dominance and takeover of foreign elite. There is a preponderance of non-local females suggesting patrilocal residence. We discuss our findings against the current evidence of material culture and historiography, but more investigation in Near Eastern comparative sites has to be conducted to narrow our future search for the actual origins of the Hyksos.

87Sr/86Sr evidence from the epeiric Martin Ridge Basin for enhanced carbonate weathering during the Hirnantian.

Project description:A pronounced positive ?13C excursion in the Hirnantian Age has been documented globally, reflecting large perturbations of carbon cycling in the Late Ordovician oceans. Increased organic-carbon burial or enhanced carbonate weathering during glacioeustatic sea-level regression has been proposed to account for this anomalous C-isotope excursion. To test the two competing hypotheses, we measured 87Sr/86Sr and ?13C of carbonates from the Copenhagen Canyon section in Nevada, USA. Our data reveal two rapid negative 87Sr/86Sr shifts that coincide with two prominent positive ?13C excursions and glacial advances. Numerical model simulations suggest that enhanced weathering of carbonates driven by glacio-eustatically controlled sea-level fall is required to produce the observed drops of 87Sr/86Sr and the coeval large positive ?13C excursions, possibly with or without increased organic carbon burial.

Vine Water Deficit Impacts Aging Bouquet in Fine Red Bordeaux Wine.

Project description:The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of vine water status on bouquet typicality, revealed after aging, and the perception of three aromatic notes (mint, truffle, and undergrowth) in bottled fine red Bordeaux wines. To address the issue of the role of vine water deficit in the overall quality of fine aged wines, a large set of wines from four Bordeaux appellations were subjected to sensory analysis. As vine water status can be characterized by carbon isotope discrimination (δ13C), this ratio was quantified for each wine studied. Statistical analyses combining δ13C and sensory data highlighted that δ13C-values discriminated effectively between the most- and least-typical wines. In addition, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed correlations between δ13C-values and truffle, undergrowth, and mint aromatic notes, three characteristics of the red Bordeaux wine aging bouquet. These correlations were confirmed to be significant using a Spearman statistical test. This study highlighted for the first time that vine water deficit positively relates to the perception of aging bouquet typicality, as well as the expression of its key aromatic nuances.

Seed morphology uncovers 1500 years of vine agrobiodiversity before the advent of the Champagne wine.

Project description:A crucial aspect of viticulture is finally unveiled as the historical dynamics of its agrobiodiversity are described in the Champagne region for the first time. Outline analyses were carried out to compare the morphology of archaeological grape seeds from Troyes and Reims (first c. AD to fifteenth c. AD) with that of a reference collection of modern seeds, including wild vines and traditional grape varieties, believed to be ancient and characteristic of the French vine heritage. This allows us to document the chronological dynamics of the use of the wild Vitis type and of the diversity of the varieties used, based on morphological disparity. After showing the existence of morphological types corresponding to geographical groups, we highlight a geochronological dynamic. Our results show that the wild type is used throughout the series, up to the Middle Ages. In addition, domestic forms, morphologically related to southern varietal groups, are very early involved in the Champagne grape agrodiversity. The groups corresponding to the typical grape varieties of today do not appear until the second millennium. These previously unsuspected dynamics are discussed in light of the social, societal and climatic changes documented for the period.

Project description:This article describes the environmental, agronomical, economical and social indicators characterization of eleven new low input vine systems to explore their multicriteria performances. These data also describe the reproducibility of all the indicators over six harvest years (2013-2018) over eleven selected winegrower plots. The environmental characterizations are total treatment frequency index, fungicide treatment frequency index, I-Phy indicator from Indigo® method, copper rate, soil compaction, bacterial activity in soil, bacterial molecular biomass, potential nitrogen mineralization rate, amont of avalaible nitrogen in soil at veraison, total specific floristic richness, and relative pollination value. The agronomical characterizations are vine phenology, vine vigour, plot yield, powdery mildew intensity on bunches at harvest, grey rot intensity on bunches at harvest, juice sugar rate (total soluble solids) and juice total acidity rate (titrable acidity) at harvest, wine characteristics after microvinification. The economical characterizations are brut semi-margin at the plot and at the farm scale. The sociological characterizations are human capital, penibility, hardouness work and pesticide risk.
