Statistical analysis of bank deposits dataset.

ABSTRACT: This article presents the statistical analysis of the deposit activities in each of the account types of a leading bank in Nigeria. The mean effect of these account types on the bank was determined using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Further test which include the Tukey's simultaneous test for differences of means was also conducted.

An effective statistical evaluation of ChIPseq dataset similarity.

Project description:ChIPseq is rapidly becoming a common technique for investigating protein-DNA interactions. However, results from individual experiments provide a limited understanding of chromatin structure, as various chromatin factors cooperate in complex ways to orchestrate transcription. In order to quantify chromtain interactions, it is thus necessary to devise a robust similarity metric applicable to ChIPseq data. Unfortunately, moving past simple overlap calculations to give statistically rigorous comparisons of ChIPseq datasets often involves arbitrary choices of distance metrics, with significance being estimated by computationally intensive permutation tests whose statistical power may be sensitive to non-biological experimental and post-processing variation.We show that it is in fact possible to compare ChIPseq datasets through the efficient computation of exact P-values for proximity. Our method is insensitive to non-biological variation in datasets such as peak width, and can rigorously model peak location biases by evaluating similarity conditioned on a restricted set of genomic regions (such as mappable genome or promoter regions). Applying our method to the well-studied dataset of Chen et al. (2008), we elucidate novel interactions which conform well with our biological understanding. By comparing ChIPseq data in an asymmetric way, we are able to observe clear interaction differences between cofactors such as p300 and factors that bind DNA directly.Source code is available for download at http://sonorus.princeton.edu/IntervalStats/IntervalStats.tar.gz.Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

Dataset on managerial incentives and bank performance: Evidence from Nigerian deposit money banks.

Project description:This study presents a data-set on the influence of managerial incentives on bank performance in selected Deposit Money Banks (DMB) in Nigeria. The use of managerial incentives to align interests of the principal and agent is advocated by agency theorists, but the peculiarity of the banking industry in terms of the role of regulation, capital structure, opacity and complexity of its transactions among others presents a different proposition in corporate governance research. The data collected over a longitudinal period between 2006 and 2016, provide information on specific managerial incentives and financial performance measures. Descriptive and inferential statistics such as correlation, and panel regression analysis estimates are presented. When analysed, the data can be a pointer in determining the unique managerial incentives predictors that could enhance a bank׳s performance.

Characterization of Ionizable Groups' Environments in Proteins and Protein-Ligand Complexes through a Statistical Analysis of the Protein Data Bank.

Project description:We conduct a statistical analysis of the molecular environment of common ionizable functional groups in both protein-ligand complexes and inside proteins from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). In particular, we characterize the frequency, type, and density of the interacting atoms as well as the presence of a potential counterion. We found that for ligands, most guanidinium groups, half of primary and secondary amines, and one-fourth of imidazole neighbor a carboxylate group. Tertiary amines bind more rarely near carboxylate groups, which may be explained by a crowded neighborhood and hydrophobic character. In comparison to the environment seen by the ligands, inside proteins, an environment enriched in main-chain atoms is found, and the prevalence of direct charge neutralization by carboxylate groups is different. When the ionizable character of water molecules and phenolic or hydroxyl groups is accounted, considering a high-resolution dataset (less than 1.5 Å), charge neutralization could occur for well above 80% of the ligand functional groups considered, but for tertiary amines.

On Tracer Breakthrough Curve Dataset Size, Shape, and Statistical Distribution.

Project description:A tracer breakthrough curve (BTC) for each sampling station is the ultimate goal of every quantitative hydrologic tracing study, and dataset size can critically affect the BTC. Groundwater-tracing data obtained using in situ automatic sampling or detection devices may result in very high-density data sets. Data-dense tracer BTCs obtained using in situ devices and stored in dataloggers can result in visually cluttered overlapping data points. The relatively large amounts of data detected by high-frequency settings available on in situ devices and stored in dataloggers ensure that important tracer BTC features, such as data peaks, are not missed. Alternatively, such dense datasets can also be difficult to interpret. Even more difficult, is the application of such dense data sets in solute-transport models that may not be able to adequately reproduce tracer BTC shapes due to the overwhelming mass of data. One solution to the difficulties associated with analyzing, interpreting, and modeling dense data sets is the selective removal of blocks of the data from the total dataset. Although it is possible to arrange to skip blocks of tracer BTC data in a periodic sense (data decimation) so as to lessen the size and density of the dataset, skipping or deleting blocks of data also may result in missing the important features that the high-frequency detection setting efforts were intended to detect. Rather than removing, reducing, or reformulating data overlap, signal filtering and smoothing may be utilized but smoothing errors (e.g., averaging errors, outliers, and potential time shifts) need to be considered. Appropriate probability distributions to tracer BTCs may be used to describe typical tracer BTC shapes, which usually include long tails. Recognizing appropriate probability distributions applicable to tracer BTCs can help in understanding some aspects of the tracer migration.

Dataset of coded handwriting features for use in statistical modelling.

Project description:The data presented here is related to the article titled, "Using handwriting to infer a writer's country of origin for forensic intelligence purposes" (Agius et al., 2017) [1]. This article reports original writer, spatial and construction characteristic data for thirty-seven English Australian writers and thirty-seven Vietnamese writers. All of these characteristics were coded and recorded in Microsoft Excel 2013 (version 15.31). The construction characteristics coded were only extracted from seven characters, which were: 'g', 'h', 'th', 'M', '0', '7' and '9'. The coded format of the writer, spatial and construction characteristics is made available in this Data in Brief in order to allow others to perform statistical analyses and modelling to investigate whether there is a relationship between the handwriting features and the nationality of the writer, and whether the two nationalities can be differentiated. Furthermore, to employ mathematical techniques that are capable of characterising the extracted features from each participant.

Dataset on statistical analysis of jet A-1 fuel laboratory properties for on-spec into-plane operations.

Project description:Safety is of utmost essence in the aviation sector, both on-ground and in the air. Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK) commonly referred to as jet fuel is one of the major resources of the aviation sector, contributing significantly to the operating cost of an airline. Flight safety is a top-notch requirement in air transportation management. Jet fuel quality affects flight safety, and this makes it mandatory to ensure that, at all points in the jet A-1 aviation fuel supply chain, the jet fuel is contamination free and on-spec. Jet fuel quality is determined via various mandatory Joint Inspection Group (JIG) based quality analysis test procedures; both baseline and extensive lab tests by third party labs. Acceptable parameter range has been established for each jet fuel property, the electrical conductivity of jet A-1 fuel must be between 50 and 600?pS/m and the density at 15?°C must be between 0.775 and 0.840?g/cm3. Beyond this range, the fuel is deemed off-spec and unsafe for into-plane fuelling operations. This data article presents daily jet fuel test records for jet-A1 fuel. The dataset contains the date of the test, the conductivity, the specific gravity at ambient temperature, the converted specific gravity at 15?°C, and the temperature of the jet fuel sample under study. All the tests were performed at standard laboratory conditions using approved and certified equipment. The dataset provides an opportunity for developing a predictive model that can be used for jet fuel properties prediction on a given day, based on previous data trends and analysis using data pattern recognition, as an indication of the variation of jet fuel properties with daily weather variation.

An analysis of a large dataset on immigrant integration in Spain. The statistical mechanics perspective on social action.

Project description:How does immigrant integration in a country change with immigration density? Guided by a statistical mechanics perspective we propose a novel approach to this problem. The analysis focuses on classical integration quantifiers such as the percentage of jobs (temporary and permanent) given to immigrants, mixed marriages, and newborns with parents of mixed origin. We find that the average values of different quantifiers may exhibit either linear or non-linear growth on immigrant density and we suggest that social action, a concept identified by Max Weber, causes the observed non-linearity. Using the statistical mechanics notion of interaction to quantitatively emulate social action, a unified mathematical model for integration is proposed and it is shown to explain both growth behaviors observed. The linear theory instead, ignoring the possibility of interaction effects would underestimate the quantifiers up to 30% when immigrant densities are low, and overestimate them as much when densities are high. The capacity to quantitatively isolate different types of integration mechanisms makes our framework a suitable tool in the quest for more efficient integration policies.

European Central Bank?s monetary policy decisions: A dataset of two decades of press conferences.

Project description:The dataset gathers all press conferences in text form made by the first three Presidents of the European Central Bank since its inception in 1998. Press conferences are composed of two elements: (1) introductory statements and (2) questions and answers (Q&A) from journalists. They serve as the main communication vehicle about the monetary policy decision of the ECB?s Governing Council. From 1998 to 2016, a total of 205 press conferences have been delivered. The dataset is structured into two main sections: (1) 205 introductory statement of the Presidents of the ECB explaining the monetary policy of the Institution and (2) 205 answers provided by the Presidents to the journalists, hence a total of 410 statements (914,499 words or 3050 pages) about the monetary policy and its context, in text form.
