Dataset on managerial incentives and bank performance: Evidence from Nigerian deposit money banks.

ABSTRACT: This study presents a data-set on the influence of managerial incentives on bank performance in selected Deposit Money Banks (DMB) in Nigeria. The use of managerial incentives to align interests of the principal and agent is advocated by agency theorists, but the peculiarity of the banking industry in terms of the role of regulation, capital structure, opacity and complexity of its transactions among others presents a different proposition in corporate governance research. The data collected over a longitudinal period between 2006 and 2016, provide information on specific managerial incentives and financial performance measures. Descriptive and inferential statistics such as correlation, and panel regression analysis estimates are presented. When analysed, the data can be a pointer in determining the unique managerial incentives predictors that could enhance a bank׳s performance.

Dataset on ethical leadership and corporate reputation - Nigerian deposit money banks׳ perspective.

Project description:Banking institutions play a critical role in any economy, and their stability is crucial to the economic development of a nation. The wave of corporate scandals that rocked the industry left the public with a loss of confidence. Efforts have since been channeled by banks towards developing their corporate governance mechanisms, except that the aspect of ethical leadership and how it translates to a bank׳s corporate reputation has not received sufficient attention. The dataset presented the perception of employees in selected deposit money banks in Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used to elicit data from the employees. Inferential statistics such as correlation, and regression analysis were adopted. The data collected focused on the impact of ethical leadership on corporate reputation. It also provided information on the significant factors affecting ethical leadership as well as the measures of corporate reputation. The survey data when analysed can be a pointer in determining the unique ethical leadership predictors that could enhance a bank׳s reputation.

A dataset of European banks in performance evaluation under uncertainty.

Project description:The dataset contains financial indicators from the financial statements of 250 banks operating in Europe which are collated for the 2015 accounting year. First, the dataset is split into input and outputs measures. Then the preferred number of inputs and outputs in relation to the total number of data is selected according to the rule of thumb in data envelopment analysis (DEA). The dataset is related to the research article entitled "Robust optimization with nonnegative decision variables: A DEA approach" (Toloo and Mensah, 2018) [1]. The dataset can be used to evaluate the performance of banks and bank efficiency under uncertainty.

Research on the impact of bank comxpetition on stability-Empirical evidence from 4631 banks in US.

Project description:This paper systematically analyzes the impact mechanism of bank competition on stability. We select the balanced panel data of 4,631 non-failure banks from 2002 to 2017 released by FDIC to do the estimation and then make an appraisal on bank competition with Lerner index and two kinds of Z-score to measure bank stability respectively. The 2SLS with fixed effect is applied for estimation. Our results suggest that: (1) Competition is a living environment for all industries and bank competition mainly affects stability through franchise value, the cost of borrowing and operating behavior. (2)According to the overall regression, we find that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between bank competition and stability with an inflection point where the Lerner index is about 0.35. Generally, the US banking industry has always been in a state of excessive competition during the observed period. The further analysis of 3 stages indicates that excessive bank competition, an 'invisible hand', may be one of the most important factors triggering the financial crisis. (3) According to the regression on regions, the inverted U-shaped relationship between bank competition and stability is also existing and the inflection point of Lerner index is between 0.3 and 0.37. However, there is also some regional heterogeneity in terms of the degree of competition, the level of stability and the ability to resist risks and maintain stability when facing competition. This paper may help financial regulators and commercial banks formulate differentiate regulatory policies and business strategies so that banks can control risks better and enhance stability in different competitive environments.

Ownership structure and financial performance: Evidence from Kenyan commercial banks.

Project description:The study examined the relationship between ownership structure and financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya for the period 2009-2020. The data were collected from audited financial statements of 39 commercial banks in Kenya. Regression results found strong evidence on ownership structures in explaining the differences in commercial banks' financial performance. The results established that the greatest influence of ownership structures was on net interest margin at 53.04% and return on assets at 31.37%. Influence of ownership structures was found to be low on return on equity at 3.32% and earnings per share at 2.13%. The results found a negative association between state ownership and net interest margin, negative association between management ownership and both net interest margin and earnings per share, negative association between institutional ownership and return on assets and a negative association between foreign ownership and earnings per share. Based on the findings, commercial banks should vary their ownership structures to boost financial performance. Secondly, banks with high percentage of state ownership should consider partial privatization to improve corporate governance practices. Third, banks should adopt managerial ownership policy limiting the proportion of equity stock on executives to limit their powers in strategic decision making. Fourth, the study proposes a percentage limit on equity stock of an individual institutional investor. Lastly, the study proposes that bank's management to come up with a policy detailing the role and place of foreign investors in strategic decision making to ensure their presence in every decision undertaken by bank managers.

ESG performance and green innovation in commercial banks: Evidence from China.

Project description:Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) is closely related to commercial banks' promotion of "dual-carbon" goals and the concept of sustainable development. The impact of ESG performance on commercial banks' support for green innovation remains an issue for in-depth study. This paper studies 36 Chinese commercial banks in China from 2010 to 2021 and finds that the ESG performance of commercial banks can promote green innovation, and this promotion is more obvious when bank remuneration incentives are effective. Meanwhile, this paper verifies the mediating role of the non-performing loan ratio and the Lerner index in it, which provides channel support for ESG to effectively promote green innovation development. This study enriches the existing literature on environmental, social, and governance performance and green innovation in commercial banks and provides new perspectives and directions for future research.

Money talks: neural substrate of modulation of fairness by monetary incentives.

Project description:A unique feature of the human species is compliance with social norms, e.g., fairness, even though this normative decision means curbing self-interest. However, sometimes people prefer to pursue wealth at the expense of moral goodness. Specifically, deviations from a fairness-related normative choice have been observed in the presence of a high monetary incentive. The neural mechanism underlying this deviation from the fairness-related normative choice has yet to be determined. In order to address this issue, using functional magnetic resonance imaging we employed an ultimatum game (UG) paradigm in which fairness and a proposed monetary amount were orthogonally varied. We found evidence for a significant modulation by the proposed amount on fairness in the right lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the bilateral insular cortices. Additionally, the insular subregions showed dissociable modulation patterns. Inter-individual differences in the modulation effects in the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) accounted for inter-individual differences in the behavioral modulation effect as measured by the rejection rate, supporting the concept that the PFC plays a critical role in making fairness-related normative decisions in a social interaction condition. Our findings provide neural evidence for the modulation of fairness by monetary incentives as well as accounting for inter-individual differences.

Higher incentives can impair performance: neural evidence on reinforcement and rationality.

Project description:Standard economic thinking postulates that increased monetary incentives should increase performance. Human decision makers, however, frequently focus on past performance, a form of reinforcement learning occasionally at odds with rational decision making. We used an incentivized belief-updating task from economics to investigate this conflict through measurements of neural correlates of reward processing. We found that higher incentives fail to improve performance when immediate feedback on decision outcomes is provided. Subsequent analysis of the feedback-related negativity, an early event-related potential following feedback, revealed the mechanism behind this paradoxical effect. As incentives increase, the win/lose feedback becomes more prominent, leading to an increased reliance on reinforcement and more errors. This mechanism is relevant for economic decision making and the debate on performance-based payment.

Customer Concentration, Managerial Ability, and Corporate Performance.

Project description:We examined whether and how managerial ability affects the relationship between customer concentration and corporate performance. Based on a novel measure of managerial ability, we found that customer concentration has a significant negative effect on corporate performance, while managerial ability can mitigate this effect. The negative effect of customer concentration is only significant in the subsample of low ability and lower efficiency in asset utilization, while the moderating effect of managerial ability is significant for all levels of asset utilization efficiency and more significant for firms with a lower gross margin. The results are robust to numerous robustness tests and endogeneity concerns. Additional analysis of mechanisms shows that in addition to superior operating ability, competent managers select major customers who are more beneficial to their company and decrease the sensitivity of their research and development (R&D) investment to customers. These findings indicate that the heterogeneity of managerial ability plays an important role in the supplier-customer context when the supplier firm generally faces one or more concentrated customers.
