Mechanically triggered reversible stepwise tricolor switching and thermochromism of anthracene-o-carborane dyad.

ABSTRACT: A novel single organic molecule-carborane conjugate, CAN, was synthesized in a high yield via a modified nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction incorporating an anthracene unit and an o-carborane moiety. CAN exhibits multiple functions of tricolored mechanochromism and mechanically triggered thermochromism. The fluorescence could be switched from blue to bright yellow then to pink by grinding. The robust and reversible thermochromic process was triggered by the mechanical force. The locally excited (LE) state emission, intermolecular excimer formation and twisted intermolecular charge transfer (TICT) are the primary origins of this tricolor switching property. High temperature sensitivity of the heavily ground CAN powders contribute to the mechanical force induced TICT emission enhancement and color switching.

Project description:Artificial smart materials with switchable multifunctionality are of immense interest owing to their wide application in sensors, displays and memory devices. Lanthanide complexes are promising multifunctional materials integrating optical and magnetic characteristics. However, synergistic manipulation of different physical properties in lanthanide systems is still challenging. Herein we designed and synthesized a mononuclear complex [DyIII(SCN)3(depma)2(4-hpy)2] (1), which incorporates 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene (depma) as a photo-active component and 4-hydroxypyridine (4-hpy) as a polar component. This compound shows several unusual features: (a) reversible thermo-responsive phase transition associated with the order-disorder transition of 4-hpy and SCN-, which leads to thermochromic behavior and dielectric anomaly; (b) reversible photo-induced dimerization of anthracene groups, which leads to synergistic switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties. To our knowledge, compound 1 is the first example of lanthanide complexes that show stimuli-triggered synergistic and reversible switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties.

Reversible Micro- and Nano- Phase Programming of Anthraquinone Thermochromism Using Blended Block Copolymers.

Project description:Here, we present an approach to generate materials with programmable thermochromic transition temperatures (TTTs), based on the reversible microcrystallization of anthraquinone dyes with the assistance of blended Pluronic block copolymers. At temperatures above block copolymer critical micellization temperature (CMT), hydrophobic anthraquinone dyes, including Sudan blue II, were dispersed in copolymer micelles, whereas at lower temperature, the dyes formed microcrystals driven by dye-dye and dye-Pluronic molecular interactions. The crystallization process altered the optical properties of the dye with bathochromatic shifts detectable by eye and the thermochromic process was fully reversible. Not only could Pluronic reversibly incorporate the anthraquinone dyes into micelles at elevated temperatures, but it also modulated the crystallization process and resulting morphology of microcrystals via tuning the molecular interactions when the temperature was lowered. Crystal melting transition points (and TTTs) were in agreement with the CMTs, demonstrating that the thermochromism was dependent on block copolymer micellization. Thermochromism could be readily programmed over a broad range of temperatures by changing the CMT by using different types and concentrations of Pluronics and combinations thereof.

Reversible Thermochromism of Nickel(II) Complexes and Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformation.

Project description:A molecular Ni(II)-NNN pincer complex (1) exhibited unprecedented reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation and color change upon heating and cooling due to a subtle change in the N-Ni(II) bond length and ligand conformation. UV-vis, thermogravimetric, differential scanning calorimetry, single-crystal structural data, temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction, and Raman and computational studies supported the structural change of the Ni(II) complex with temperature.

Cooperative supramolecular polymers with anthracene?endoperoxide photo-switching for fluorescent anti-counterfeiting.

Project description:Innovative technologies are highly pursued for the detection and avoidance of counterfeiting in modern information society. Herein, we report the construction of photo-responsive supramolecular polymers toward fluorescent anti-counterfeit applications, by taking advantage of multicycle anthracene?endoperoxide switching properties. Due to ?-metalation effect, photo-oxygenation of anthracene to endoperoxide is proceeded under the mild visible light irradiation conditions, while the backward conversion occurs spontaneously at room temperature. Supramolecular polymers are formed with cooperative nucleation?elongation mechanism, which facilitate fluorescence resonance energy transfer process via two-component co-assembly strategy. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer efficiency is delicately regulated by either light-triggered anthracene?endoperoxide conversion or vapor-induced monomer-polymer transition, leading to high-contrast fluorescent changes among three different states. On this basis, dual-mode anti-counterfeiting patterns have been successfully fabricated via inkjet printing techniques. Hence, cooperative supramolecular polymerization of photo-fluorochromic molecules represents an efficient approach toward high-performance anti-counterfeit materials with enhanced security reliability, fast response, and ease of operation.

Rapid reversible borane to boryl hydride exchange by metal shuttling on the carborane cluster surface.

Project description:In this work, we introduce a novel concept of a borane group vicinal to a metal boryl bond acting as a supporting hemilabile ligand in exohedrally metalated three-dimensional carborane clusters. The (POBOP)Ru(Cl)(PPh3) pincer complex (POBOP = 1,7-OP(i-Pr)2-m-2-carboranyl) features extreme distortion of the two-center-two-electron Ru-B bond due to the presence of a strong three-center-two-electron B-H···Ru vicinal interaction. Replacement of the chloride ligand with a hydride afforded the (POBOP)Ru(H)(PPh3) pincer complex, which possesses B-Ru, B-H···Ru, and Ru-H bonds. This complex was found to exhibit a rapid exchange between hydrogen atoms of the borane and the terminal hydride through metal center shuttling between two boron atoms of the carborane cage. This exchange process, which involves sequential cleavage and formation of strong covalent metal-boron and metal-hydrogen bonds, is unexpectedly facile at temperatures above -50 °C corresponding to an activation barrier of 12.2 kcal mol-1. Theoretical calculations suggested two equally probable pathways for the exchange process through formally Ru(0) or Ru(iv) intermediates, respectively. The presence of this hemilabile vicinal B-H···Ru interaction in (POBOP)Ru(H)(PPh3) was found to stabilize a latent coordination site at the metal center promoting efficient catalytic transfer dehydrogenation of cyclooctane under nitrogen and air at 170 °C.

Triggered Reversible Disassembly of an Engineered Protein Nanocage*.

Project description:Protein nanocages play crucial roles in sub-cellular compartmentalization and spatial control in all domains of life and have been used as biomolecular tools for applications in biocatalysis, drug delivery, and bionanotechnology. The ability to control their assembly state under physiological conditions would further expand their practical utility. To gain such control, we introduced a peptide capable of triggering conformational change at a key structural position in the largest known encapsulin nanocompartment. We report the structure of the resulting engineered nanocage and demonstrate its ability to disassemble and reassemble on demand under physiological conditions. We demonstrate its capacity for in vivo encapsulation of proteins of choice while also demonstrating in vitro cargo loading capabilities. Our results represent a functionally robust addition to the nanocage toolbox and a novel approach for controlling protein nanocage disassembly and reassembly under mild conditions.

Reversible structural switching of a DNA-DDAB film.

Project description:We describe the novel structure and behavior of a DNA-DDAB complex film cast from an organic solvent and exhibiting a structural switching transition as it is dried or wetted with water. The film was easily prepared by formation of a complex between the negatively charged phosphate groups of DNA and the positively charged headgroup of the surfactant DDAB. This complex was then purified, dried, dissolved in 2-propanol, and cast onto a glass slide to form a self-standing film by means of slow evaporation. While the structure of the dried film was found to be composed of single-stranded DNA and a monolayer of DDAB, upon hydration of the film, the structure switched to double-stranded DNA complexed to a bilayer of DDAB. We expect this phenomenon to serve as a useful model for the design of new responsive materials and programmable self-assembly.

Reversible energy-transfer switching on a DNA scaffold.

Project description:We show that FRET between Pacific Blue (PB) and Alexa488 (A488) covalently attached to a DNA scaffold can be reversibly controlled by photochromic switching of a spiropyran derivative. With the spiropyran in the closed spiro isomeric form, FRET occurs freely between PB and A488. UV-induced isomerization to the open merocyanine form shuts down the FRET process by efficient quenching of the PB excited state. The process is reversed by exposure to visible light, triggering the isomerization to the spiro isomer.

A readily programmable, fully reversible shape-switching material.

Project description:Liquid crystalline (LC) elastomers (LCEs) enable large-scale reversible shape changes in polymeric materials; however, they require intensive, irreversible programming approaches in order to facilitate controllable actuation. We have implemented photoinduced dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) that chemically anneals the LCE toward an applied equilibrium only when and where the light-activated DCC is on. By using light as the stimulus that enables programming, the dynamic bond exchange is orthogonal to LC phase behavior, enabling the LCE to be annealed in any LC phase or in the isotropic phase with various manifestations of this capability explored here. In a photopolymerizable LCE network, we report the synthesis, characterization, and exploitation of readily shape-programmable DCC-functional LCEs to create predictable, complex, and fully reversible shape changes, thus enabling the literal square peg to fit into a round hole.

Rapid perceptual switching of a reversible biological figure.

Project description:Certain visual stimuli can give rise to contradictory perceptions. In this paper we examine the temporal dynamics of perceptual reversals experienced with biological motion, comparing these dynamics to those observed with other ambiguous structure from motion (SFM) stimuli. In our first experiment, naïve observers monitored perceptual alternations with an ambiguous rotating walker, a figure that randomly alternates between walking in clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) directions. While the number of reported reversals varied between observers, the observed dynamics (distribution of dominance durations, CW/CCW proportions) were comparable to those experienced with an ambiguous kinetic depth cylinder. In a second experiment, we compared reversal profiles with rotating and standard point-light walkers (i.e. non-rotating). Over multiple test repetitions, three out of four observers experienced consistently shorter mean percept durations with the rotating walker, suggesting that the added rotational component may speed up reversal rates with biomotion. For both stimuli, the drift in alternation rate across trial and across repetition was minimal. In our final experiment, we investigated whether reversals with the rotating walker and a non-biological object with similar global dimensions (rotating cuboid) occur at random phases of the rotation cycle. We found evidence that some observers experience peaks in the distribution of response locations that are relatively stable across sessions. Using control data, we discuss the role of eye movements in the development of these reversal patterns, and the related role of exogenous stimulus characteristics. In summary, we have demonstrated that the temporal dynamics of reversal with biological motion are similar to other forms of ambiguous SFM. We conclude that perceptual switching with biological motion is a robust bistable phenomenon.
