Project description:The demands of modern psychophysical studies require precise stimulus delivery and flexible platforms for experimental control. Here, we describe PsyAcoustX, a new, freely available suite of software tools written in the MATLAB(®) environment to conduct psychoacoustics research on a standard PC. PsyAcoustX provides a flexible platform to generate and present auditory stimuli in real time and record users' behavioral responses. Data are automatically logged by stimulus condition and aggregated in an exported spreadsheet for offline analysis. Detection thresholds can be measured adaptively under basic and complex auditory masking tasks and other paradigms (e.g., amplitude modulation detection) within minutes. The flexibility of the module offers experimenters access to nearly every conceivable combination of stimulus parameters (e.g., probe-masker relations). Example behavioral applications are highlighted including the measurement of audiometric thresholds, basic simultaneous and non-simultaneous (i.e., forward and backward) masking paradigms, gap detection, and amplitude modulation detection. Examples of these measurements are provided including the psychoacoustic phenomena of temporal overshoot, psychophysical tuning curves, and temporal modulation transfer functions. Importantly, the core design of PsyAcoustX is easily modifiable, allowing users the ability to adapt its basic structure and create additional modules for measuring discrimination/detection thresholds for other auditory attributes (e.g., pitch, intensity, etc.) or binaural paradigms.

Project description:High-resolution visualization of surfaces of geologic interest, at a multitude of scales, using 3D point cloud technologies provides an opportunity to analyze spatial relationships of surfaces using orientation data. We present a MATLAB® script that produces planar geologic attitude data (e.g., strike, dip, and dip-direction data) from 3D datasets (e.g., point clouds, 3D scanning). The method utilizes Cartesian coordinates of triangular planar surfaces and converts them into matrices of conventional geologic attitude data. Spatial relationships among data points can be investigated, using polar tangent diagrams, stereographic analysis, or geologic curvature analysis. We utilize this script to create "synthetic" graphical plots (e.g., stereograms, tangent diagrams) from geomechanically realistic, virtual, folded surfaces produced by dynamic modeling. Synthetic graphical diagrams are of considerable usefulness in interpreting graphical plots (e.g., stereograms) of attitude data from natural folded rock surfaces, particularly in locations with poor exposure. •This script outputs attitude data (strike, dip, and dip direction) in a spreadsheet and as a text file for use in other visualization software.•A tangent diagram is created and displayed in this script for rapid visualization and fold shape assessment.•The MATLAB script is readily modified to accept multiple data formats for input (e.g., MATLAB variables, *.csv files, etc.) and output (e.g., *.csv files, *.txt files, etc.).

Project description:Currently, using MATLAB Web App Server to deploy MATLAB Web applications for hosting and sharing interactive Web applications involves the following problems: slow loading of applications, incompatibility with some browser versions, and various shortcomings of deployment tools, such as poor scalability and difficulty in optimizing black boxes. These problems adversely affect the user experience. To address this situation, we propose the use of front-end technology to design application layouts and build an application hosting platform with front-end and back-end separation using Nginx and Python. This method is shown to be simple and efficient, and it can successfully overcome the aforementioned problems while providing new ideas for hosting and sharing.

Project description:Airborne remotely sensed data (e.g. hyperspectral imagery, thermal videography, full frame RGB photography) often requires post-processing to be combined into a series of images or a mosaic for analysis. This is generally accomplished through the use of position and attitude hardware (i.e. Global Navigation Satellite System - GNSS / Inertial Measurement Unit - IMU) in combination with specialized software. Occasionally, hardware failure in the GNSS/IMU instrumentation occurs, however the data are still recoverable through a correction process, which allows image registration to mosaic the data. Here we present a simple and flexible MATLAB® code package that has been developed to combine video-based remotely sensed data. It first applies an iterative image registration process to align all frames, using pre-existing GPS information if supplied by the user, and then grids the frame data together to develop a final, single mosaic dataset that can be used for analysis. An example of this method using airborne infrared video data of a wildfire is shown as a demonstration.•MATLAB functions are easily adaptable to specific user needs and datasets.•The method outputs the combined data and positional information in three separate MATLAB variables that can be readily used for analysis in MATLAB or exported for use in other software.

Project description:In recent years, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has established itself as a key method in structural biology, permitting the structural characterization of large biomolecular complexes in various functional states. The data obtained through single-particle cryo-EM has recently seen a leap in resolution thanks to landmark advances in experimental and computational techniques, resulting in sub-nanometer resolution structures being obtained routinely. The remaining gap between these data and revealing the mechanisms of molecular function can be closed through hybrid modeling tools that incorporate known atomic structures into the cryo-EM data. One such tool, molecular dynamics flexible fitting (MDFF), uses molecular dynamics simulations to combine structures from X-ray crystallography with cryo-EM density maps to derive atomic models of large biomolecular complexes. The structures furnished by MDFF can be used subsequently in computational investigations aimed at revealing the dynamics of the complexes under study. In the present work, recent applications of MDFF are presented, including the interpretation of cryo-EM data of the ribosome at different stages of translation and the structure of a membrane-curvature-inducing photosynthetic complex.

Project description:Fish spawning is often used as an integrated measure of reproductive toxicity, and an indicator of aquatic ecosystem health in the context of forecasting potential population-level effects considered important for ecological risk assessment. Consequently, there is a need for flexible, widely-applicable, biologically-based models that can predict changes in fecundity in response to chemical exposures, based on readily measured biochemical endpoints, such as plasma vitellogenin (VTG) concentrations, as input parameters. Herein we describe a MATLAB® version of an oocyte growth dynamics model for fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) with a graphical user interface based upon a previously published model developed with MCSim software and evaluated with data from fathead minnows exposed to an androgenic chemical, 17β-trenbolone. We extended the evaluation of our new model to include six chemicals that inhibit enzymes involved in steroid biosynthesis: fadrozole, ketoconazole, propiconazole, prochloraz, fenarimol, and trilostane. In addition, for unexposed fathead minnows from group spawning design studies, and those exposed to the six chemicals, we evaluated whether the model is capable of predicting the average number of eggs per spawn and the average number of spawns per female, which was not evaluated previously. The new model is significantly improved in terms of ease of use, platform independence, and utility for providing output in a format that can be used as input into a population dynamics model. Model-predicted minimum and maximum cumulative fecundity over time encompassed the observed data for fadrozole and most propiconazole, prochloraz, fenarimol and trilostane treatments, but did not consistently replicate results from ketoconazole treatments. For average fecundity (eggs•female(-1)•day(-1)), eggs per spawn, and the number of spawns per female, the range of model-predicted values generally encompassed the experimentally observed values. Overall, we found that the model predicts reproduction metrics robustly and its predictions capture the variability in the experimentally observed data.

Project description:Hearing-aid (HA) prescription rules (such as NAL-NL2, DSL-v5, and CAM2) are used by HA audiologists to define initial HA settings (e.g., insertion gains, IGs) for patients. This initial fitting is later individually adjusted for each patient to improve clinical outcomes in terms of speech intelligibility and listening comfort. During this fine-tuning stage, speech-intelligibility tests are often carried out with the patient to assess the benefits associated with different HA settings. As these tests tend to be time-consuming and performance on them depends on the patient's level of fatigue and familiarity with the test material, only a limited number of HA settings can be explored. Consequently, it is likely that a suboptimal fitting is used for the patient. Recent studies have shown that automatic speech recognition (ASR) can be used to predict the effects of IGs on speech intelligibility for patients with age-related hearing loss (ARHL). The aim of the present study was to extend this approach by optimizing, in addition to IGs, compression thresholds (CTs). However, increasing the number of parameters to be fitted increases exponentially the number of configurations to be assessed. To limit the number of HA settings to be tested, three random-search (RS) genetic algorithms were used. The resulting new HA fitting method, combining ASR and RS, is referred to as "objective prescription rule based on ASR and random search" (OPRA-RS). Optimal HA settings were computed for 12 audiograms, representing average and individual audiometric profiles typical for various levels of ARHL severity, and associated ASR performances were compared to those obtained with the settings recommended by CAM2. Each RS algorithm was run twice to assess its reliability. For all RS algorithms, ASR scores obtained with OPRA-RS were significantly higher than those associated with CAM2. Each RS algorithm converged on similar optimal HA settings across repetitions. However, significant differences were observed between RS algorithms in terms of maximum ASR performance and processing costs. These promising results open the way to the use of ASR and RS algorithms for the fine-tuning of HAs with potential speech-intelligibility benefits for the patient.

Project description:In most masonry arches stresses are very low and, therefore, collapse does not occur because of material failure. As a consequence, the safety of arches should not be assessed by means of a safety factor based on material strength as for conventional structures. In 1969 Heyman was the first to state that the safety of masonry arches relies on their geometry and proposed a method for computing the so-called "geometrical factor of safety" based on the comparison between the shape of the thrust line and the profile of the arch. In this context, we have recently developed a method capable of computing the line of thrust closest to the geometrical axis and defining a safety factor based on the comparison between such a line of thrust and the profile of the arch, which we have denoted as "performance factor". In this paper, that supplements the author ref. (Tempesta and Galassi, 2019 [41]), the Matlab code of our method is provided for unlimited and unrestricted use by researchers as well as academics for educational purposes. •The method (denoted as FRS Method) is inspired by the method proposed by Heyman in 1969•Unlike the original iterative method, the FRS Method computes the line of thrust using a one-step procedure, which is less time consuming and provides the exact solution•The original geometrical factor of safety is replaced by a performance factor, that characterizes the range of the equilibrium thrust lines within the profile of the arch effectively and the safety factor in a targeted way.

Project description:False information detection can detect false information in social media and reduce its negative impact on society. With the development of multimedia, the multimodal content contained in false information is increasing, so it is important to use multimodal features to detect false information. This paper mainly uses information from two modalities, text and image. The features extracted by the backbone network are not further processed in the previous work, and the problems of noise and information loss in the process of fusing multimodal features are ignored. This paper proposes a false information detection method based on Text-CNN and SE modules. We use Text-CNN to process the text and image features extracted by BERT and Swin-transformer to enhance the quality of the features. In addition, we use the modified SE module to fuse text and image features and reduce the noise in the fusion process. Meanwhile, we draw on the idea of residual networks to reduce information loss in the fusion process by concatenating the original features with the fused features. Our model improves accuracy by 6.5% and 2.0% on the Weibo dataset and Twitter dataset compared to the attention based multimodal factorized bilinear pooling. The comparative experimental results show that the proposed model can improve the accuracy of false information detection. The results of ablation experiments further demonstrate the effectiveness of each module in our model.
