Anion-templated hexagonal nanotubes.

ABSTRACT: Hydrogen bonding between bromide anions and a tetrahydroxytriptycene ligand was used to assemble crystalline hexagonal tubes with nanometer diameters in good yield. Use of a hexahydroxytriptycene ligand again gave hexagonal nanotubes, but containing the spontaneously-oxidised quinone-tetrahydroxy ligand. The surprisingly robust nanotubes are stable to heat, vacuum and water, and represent an unprecedented use of O-H···anion coordination to assemble complex three-dimensional structures.

Tunable Anion-Selective Transport through Monolayer Graphene and Hexagonal Boron Nitride.

Project description:Membranes that selectively filter for both anions and cations are central to technological applications from clean energy generation to desalination devices. 2D materials have immense potential as these ion-selective membranes due to their thinness, mechanical strength, and tunable surface chemistry; however, currently, only cation-selective membranes have been reported. Here we demonstrate the controllable cation and anion selectivity of both monolayer graphene and hexagonal boron nitride. In particular, we measure the ionic current through membranes grown by chemical vapor deposition containing well-known defects inherent to scalably produced and wet-transferred 2D materials. We observe a striking change from cation selectivity with monovalent ions to anion selectivity by controlling the concentration of multivalent ions and inducing charge inversion on the 2D membrane. Furthermore, we find good agreement between our experimental data and theoretical predictions from the Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz equation and use this model to extract selectivity ratios. These tunable selective membranes conduct up to 500 anions for each cation and thus show potential for osmotic power generation.

Nitrite-templated synthesis of lanthanide-containing [2]rotaxanes for anion sensing.

Project description:The first anion-templated synthesis of a lanthanide-containing interlocked molecule is demonstrated by utilizing a nitrite anion to template initial pseudorotaxane formation. Subsequent stoppering of the interpenetrated assembly allows for the preparation of a lanthanide-functionalized [2]rotaxane in high yield. Following removal of the nitrite anion template, the europium [2]rotaxane host is demonstrated to recognize and sense fluoride selectively.

A liquid-crystalline hexagonal columnar phase in highly-dilute suspensions of imogolite nanotubes.

Project description:Liquid crystals have found wide applications in many fields ranging from detergents to information displays and they are also increasingly being used in the 'bottom-up' self-assembly approach of material nano-structuration. Moreover, liquid-crystalline organizations are frequently observed by biologists. Here we show that one of the four major lyotropic liquid-crystal phases, the columnar one, is much more stable on dilution than reported so far in literature. Indeed, aqueous suspensions of imogolite nanotubes, at low ionic strength, display the columnar liquid-crystal phase at volume fractions as low as ? 0.2%. Consequently, due to its low visco-elasticity, this columnar phase is easily aligned in an alternating current electric field, in contrast with usual columnar liquid-crystal phases. These findings should have important implications for the statistical physics of the suspensions of charged rods and could also be exploited in materials science to prepare ordered nanocomposites and in biophysics to better understand solutions of rod-like biopolymers.

Piezoelectric Response of Porous Nanotubes Derived from Hexagonal Boron Nitride under Strain Influence.

Project description:A computational study via periodic density functional theory of porous nanotubes derived from single-layer surfaces of porous hexagonal boron nitride nanotubes (PBNNTs) and inorganic graphenylene-like boron nitride nanotubes (IGP-BNNTs) has been carried out with the main focus in its piezoelectric behavior. The simulations showed that the strain provides a meaningful improve in the piezoelectric response on the zigzag porous boron nitride nanotubes. Additionally, its stability, possible formation, elastic, and electronic properties were analyzed, and for comparison purpose, the porous graphene and graphenylene nanotubes were studied. From the elastic properties study, it was found that IGP-BNNTs exhibited a higher rigidity because of the influence of the superficial porous area, as compared to PBNNTs. The present study provides evidence that the strain is a way to maximize the piezoelectric response and make this material a good candidate for electromechanical devices.

Chloride-Anion-Templated Synthesis of a Strapped-Porphyrin-Containing Catenane Host System.

Project description:The synthesis, structure and anion-recognition properties of a new strapped-porphyrin-containing [2]catenane anion host system are described. The assembly of the catenane is directed by discrete chloride anion templation acting in synergy with secondary aromatic donor-acceptor and coordinative pyridine-zinc interactions. The [2]catenane incorporates a three-dimensional, hydrogen-bond-donating anion-binding pocket; solid-state structural analysis of the catenane?chloride complex reveals that the chloride anion is encapsulated within the catenane's interlocked binding cavity through six convergent CH????Cl and NH???Cl hydrogen-bonding interactions and solution-phase (1) H?NMR titration experiments demonstrate that this complementary hydrogen-bonding arrangement facilitates the selective recognition of chloride over larger halide anions in DMSO solution.

Anion-templated self-assembly of tetrahedral cage complexes of cobalt(II) with bridging ligands containing two bidentate pyrazolyl-pyridine binding sites.

Project description:The bridging ligands L(1) and L(2) contain two N,N-bidentate pyrazolyl-pyridine units linked to a central aromatic spacer unit (1,2-phenyl or 2,3-naphthyl, respectively). Reaction with Ni(II) salts and treatment with the anions tetrafluoroborate or perchlorate result in formation of dinuclear complexes having a 2:3 metal:ligand ratio, with one bridging and two terminal tetradentate ligands. In contrast, reaction of L(1) and L(2) with Co(II) salts, followed by treatment with tetrafluoroborate or perchlorate, results in assembly of cage complexes having a 4:6 metal:ligand ratio; these complexes have a metal ion at each corner of an approximate tetrahedron, and a bis-bidentate bridging ligand spanning each edge. The central cavity is occupied by a tetrahedral counterion that forms multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions with the methylene protons of the bridging ligands. The anionic guest fits tightly into the central cavity of the cage to which it is ideally complementary in terms of shape, size, and charge. Solution NMR experiments show that the central anion acts as a template for cage formation, with a mixture of Co(II) and the appropriate bridging ligand alone giving no assembly into a cage until the tetrahedral anion is added, at which point cage assembly is fast and quantitative. The difference between the structures of the complexes with Ni(II) and Co(II) illustrate how the uncoordinated anions can exert a profound influence on the course of the assembly process.

Phosphonium-Templated Iodoplumbates.

Project description:A new family of iodoplumbates based on phosphonium cations have been synthesized and characterized via X-ray crystallography. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrates that these materials have a remarkably high thermal stability and show potential for applications as organic-inorganic hybrid semiconductors. We also present the synthesis of three novel phosphonium salts and the crystallographic elucidation of these compounds.

Decrypting Strong and Weak Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Interactions with Mitochondrial Voltage-Dependent Anion Channels Using Molecular Docking and Perturbation Theory.

Project description:The current molecular docking study provided the Free Energy of Binding (FEB) for the interaction (nanotoxicity) between VDAC mitochondrial channels of three species (VDAC1-Mus musculus, VDAC1-Homo sapiens, VDAC2-Danio rerio) with SWCNT-H, SWCNT-OH, SWCNT-COOH carbon nanotubes. The general results showed that the FEB values were statistically more negative (p?<?0.05) in the following order: (SWCNT-VDAC2-Danio rerio)?>?(SWCNT-VDAC1-Mus musculus)?>?(SWCNT-VDAC1-Homo sapiens)?>?(ATP-VDAC). More negative FEB values for SWCNT-COOH and OH were found in VDAC2-Danio rerio when compared with VDAC1-Mus musculus and VDAC1-Homo sapiens (p?<?0.05). In addition, a significant correlation (0.66?>?r2?>?0.97) was observed between n-Hamada index and VDAC nanotoxicity (or FEB) for the zigzag topologies of SWCNT-COOH and SWCNT-OH. Predictive Nanoparticles-Quantitative-Structure Binding-Relationship models (nano-QSBR) for strong and weak SWCNT-VDAC docking interactions were performed using Perturbation Theory, regression and classification models. Thus, 405 SWCNT-VDAC interactions were predicted using a nano-PT-QSBR classifications model with high accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity (73-98%) in training and validation series, and a maximum AUROC value of 0.978. In addition, the best regression model was obtained with Random Forest (R2 of 0.833, RMSE of 0.0844), suggesting an excellent potential to predict SWCNT-VDAC channel nanotoxicity. RNA-templated DNA repair.

Project description:RNA can act as a template for DNA synthesis in the reverse transcription of retroviruses and retrotransposons and in the elongation of telomeres. Despite its abundance in the nucleus, there has been no evidence for a direct role of RNA as a template in the repair of any chromosomal DNA lesions, including DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), which are repaired in most organisms by homologous recombination or by non-homologous end joining. An indirect role for RNA in DNA repair, following reverse transcription and formation of a complementary DNA, has been observed in the non-homologous joining of DSB ends. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in which homologous recombination is efficient, RNA was shown to mediate recombination, but only indirectly through a cDNA intermediate generated by the reverse transcriptase function of Ty retrotransposons in Ty particles in the cytoplasm. Although pairing between duplex DNA and single-strand (ss)RNA can occur in vitro and in vivo, direct homologous exchange of genetic information between RNA and DNA molecules has not been observed. We show here that RNA can serve as a template for DNA synthesis during repair of a chromosomal DSB in yeast. The repair was accomplished with RNA oligonucleotides complementary to the broken ends. This and the observation that even yeast replicative DNA polymerases such as alpha and delta can copy short RNA template tracts in vitro demonstrate that RNA can transfer genetic information in vivo through direct homologous interaction with chromosomal DNA.

Kinase-templated abiotic reaction.

Project description:Protein kinases are quintessential regulators of cellular function. Numerous pathologies are intimately linked to the dysregulated activity of a particular protein kinase. Herein we report a technology based on a proximity-induced chemical transformation that enables the detection and imaging of specific kinases. Using two probes that target the nucleotide-binding site and substrate binding site of a target kinase respectively, the reagents appended on the probes are brought within reactive distance thereby enabling the chemical transformation. The reaction used for sensing is a ruthenium-photocatalyzed reduction of a pyridinium immolative linker, which uncages a fluorophore (rhodamine). We demonstrate that this technology can be used to discriminate between closely related kinases with a high signal to noise ratio. We further demonstrate that the technology operates within the complexity of a cellular context with a good correlation between the level of kinase activity and fluorescence output.
