Colloidal Synthesis of CsX Nanocrystals (X = Cl, Br, I).

ABSTRACT: A facile colloidal synthesis of highly ionic cesium halide nanocrystals is reported. Colloidal nanocrystals of CsI, CsCl and CsBr with unprecedentedly small dimensions are obtained using oleylammonium halides and cesium oleate as precursors. The ease and adaptability of our method enables its universalization for the formation of other highly ionic nanocrystals.

Colloidal CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) Nanocrystals 2.0: Zwitterionic Capping Ligands for Improved Durability and Stability.

Project description:Colloidal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have recently emerged as versatile photonic sources. Their processing and optoelectronic applications are hampered by the loss of colloidal stability and structural integrity due to the facile desorption of surface capping molecules during isolation and purification. To address this issue, herein, we propose a new ligand capping strategy utilizing common and inexpensive long-chain zwitterionic molecules such as 3-(N,N-dimethyloctadecylammonio)propanesulfonate, resulting in much improved chemical durability. In particular, this class of ligands allows for the isolation of clean NCs with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QYs) of above 90% after four rounds of precipitation/redispersion along with much higher overall reaction yields of uniform and colloidal dispersible NCs. Densely packed films of these NCs exhibit high PL QY values and effective charge transport. Consequently, they exhibit photoconductivity and low thresholds for amplified spontaneous emission of 2 μJ cm-2 under femtosecond optical excitation and are suited for efficient light-emitting diodes.

Fully Inorganic Ruddlesden?Popper Double Cl?I and Triple Cl?Br?I Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Project description:The vast majority of lead halide perovskite (LHP)nanocrystals (NCs) are currently based on either a single halide composition (CsPbCl3, CsPbBr3, and CsPbI3) or an alloyed mixture of this work, we present the synthesis as well as a detailed optical and structural study of two halide alloying cases that have not previously been reported for LHP NCs: Cs2PbI2Cl2 NCs and triple halide CsPb(Cl:Br:I)3 NCs. In the case of Cs2PbI2Cl2, we observe for the first time NCs with a fully inorganic Ruddlesden?Popper phase (RPP) crystal structure. Unlike the well-explored organic?inorganic RPP, here, the RPP formation is triggered by the size difference between the halideions. These NCs exhibit a strong excitonic absorption, albeit with a weak photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). In the case of the triple halide CsPb(Cl:Br:I)3 composition, the NCs comprise a CsPbBr2Cl perovskite crystal lattice with only a small amount of incorporated iodide, which segregates at RPP planes’ interfaces within the CsPb(Cl:Br:I)3 NCs. Supported by density functional theory calculations and postsynthetic surface treatments to enhance the PLQY, we show that the combination of iodide segregation and defective RPP interfaces are most likely linked to the strong PL quenching observed in these nanostructures. In summary, this work demonstrates the limits of halide alloying in LHP NCs because a mixture that contains halide ions of very different sizes leads to the formation of defective RPP interfaces and a severe quenching of LHP NC’s optical properties.

Colloidal Synthesis of Bulk-Bandgap Lead Selenide Nanocrystals.

Project description:Lead selenide quantum dots (QDs) are low-bandgap IV-VI semiconducting nanomaterials that have been studied for a variety of applications. Their preparation using colloidal methods can create small spherical to larger cubic nanocrystals, with an upper limit of ~17 nm reported to date. Here we describe methods for preparing cubic PbSe nanocrystals over a 20-40 nm size range using a twostep procedure. Specifically, ~10 nm PbSe QDs are generated using the rapid injection method, the products from which are overcoated with additional lead and selenium precursors. The use of two lead reagents were studied; lead oleate resulted in a maximum of 20 nm cubes, while more reactive lead hexyldecanoate resulted in much larger nanomaterials with bulk bandgaps. However, PbSe samples prepared with lead hexyldecanoate also contained agglomerates. Special care must be taken when characterizing larger strained nanomaterials with X-ray powder diffraction, for which the Scherrer equation is inadequate. A more rigorous approach using the Williamson-Hall method provides characterizations that are consistent with electron microscopy analysis.

Mode locking of hole spin coherences in CsPb(Cl, Br)<sub>3</sub> perovskite nanocrystals.

Project description:The spin physics of perovskite nanocrystals with confined electrons or holes is attracting increasing attention, both for fundamental studies and spintronic applications. Here, stable [Formula: see text] lead halide perovskite nanocrystals embedded in a fluorophosphate glass matrix are studied by time-resolved optical spectroscopy to unravel the coherent spin dynamics of holes and their interaction with nuclear spins of the 207Pb isotope. We demonstrate the spin mode locking effect provided by the synchronization of the Larmor precession of single hole spins in each nanocrystal in the ensemble that are excited periodically by a laser in an external magnetic field. The mode locking is enhanced by nuclei-induced frequency focusing. An ensemble spin dephasing time [Formula: see text] of a nanosecond and a single hole spin coherence time of T2 = 13 ns are measured. The developed theoretical model accounting for the mode locking and nuclear focusing for randomly oriented nanocrystals with perovskite band structure describes the experimental data very well.

Highly Tunable Emission by Halide Engineering in Lead-Free Perovskite-Derivative Nanocrystals: The Cs2SnX6 (X = Cl, Br, Br/I, I) System.

Project description:Nanocrystals of Cs2SnX6 (X = Cl, Br, Br0.5I0.5, and I) have been prepared by a simple, optimized, hot-injection method, reporting for the first time the synthesis of Cs2SnCl6, Cs2SnBr6, and mixed Cs2Sn(I0.5Br0.5)6 nanocrystalline samples. They all show a cubic crystal structure with a linear scaling of lattice parameter by changing the halide size. The prepared nanocrystals have spherical shape with average size from 3 to 6 nm depending on the nature of the halide and span an emission range from 444 nm (Cs2SnCl6) to 790 nm (Cs2SnI6) with a further modulation provided by mixed Br/I systems.

Fast Anion-Exchange in Highly Luminescent Nanocrystals of Cesium Lead Halide Perovskites (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I).

Project description:Postsynthetic chemical transformations of colloidal nanocrystals, such as ion-exchange reactions, provide an avenue to compositional fine-tuning or to otherwise inaccessible materials and morphologies. While cation-exchange is facile and commonplace, anion-exchange reactions have not received substantial deployment. Here we report fast, low-temperature, deliberately partial, or complete anion-exchange in highly luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals of cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I). By adjusting the halide ratios in the colloidal nanocrystal solution, the bright photoluminescence can be tuned over the entire visible spectral region (410-700 nm) while maintaining high quantum yields of 20-80% and narrow emission line widths of 10-40 nm (from blue to red). Furthermore, fast internanocrystal anion-exchange is demonstrated, leading to uniform CsPb(Cl/Br)3 or CsPb(Br/I)3 compositions simply by mixing CsPbCl3, CsPbBr3, and CsPbI3 nanocrystals in appropriate ratios.

Colloidal Synthesis of Nickel Arsenide Nanocrystals for Electrochemical Water Splitting.

Project description:We report a detailed study on the first colloidal synthesis of NiAs nanocrystals. By optimizing the synthesis parameters, we were able to obtain trioctylphosphine-capped NiAs nanoplatelets with an average diameter of ∼10 nm and a thickness of ca. 4 nm. We then studied the performance of such NiAs nanocrystals as electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting reactions, namely, acidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). These nanocrystals were found to be the most HER active ones among the transition metal arsenides reported to date despite exhibiting less than 40 h of stability under benchmark operative conditions (i.e., -10 mA cmgeo -2). When tested as alkaline OER electrocatalysts, our NiAs nanocrystals behaved as a pre-catalyst and transformed superficially into an active Ni-oxy/hydroxide. As a result, NiAs nanocrystals featured an OER activity higher than that of benchmark Ni0 nanocrystals. Noticeably, the OER performance, in terms of , was retained for up to 60 h of continuous operation. The present study highlights how transition metal arsenides, whose structural features could be successfully controlled through a proper tuning of the synthetic parameters, might represent an emerging class of materials for electrocatalytic applications.

Diffusion dynamics controlled colloidal synthesis of highly monodisperse InAs nanocrystals.

Project description:Highly monodisperse colloidal InAs quantum dots (QDs) with superior optoelectronic properties are promising candidates for various applications, including infrared photodetectors and photovoltaics. Recently, a synthetic process involving continuous injection has been introduced to synthesize uniformly sized InAs QDs. Still, synthetic efforts to increase the particle size of over 5 nm often suffer from growth suppression. Secondary nucleation or interparticle ripening during the growth accompanies the inhomogeneity in size as well. In this study, we propose a growth model for the continuous synthetic processing of colloidal InAs QDs based on molecular diffusion. The experimentally validated model demonstrates how precursor solution injection reduces monomer flux, limiting particle growth during synthesis. As predicted by our model, we control the diffusion dynamics by tuning reaction volume, precursor concentration, and injection rate of precursor. Through diffusion-dynamics-control in the continuous process, we synthesize the InAs QDs with a size over 9.0-nm (1Smax of 1600 nm) with a narrow size distribution (12.2%). Diffusion-dynamics-controlled synthesis presented in this study effectively manages the monomer flux and thus overcome monomer-reactivity-originating size limit of nanocrystal growth in solution.
