Electric gating can strongly modulate a wide variety of physical properties in semiconductors and insulators, such as significant changes of conductivity in silicon, appearance of superconductivity in SrTiO<sub>3</sub>, the paramagnet-ferromagnet transition in (In,Mn)As, and so on.
