Solid-State Highly Efficient DR Mono and Poly-dicyano-phenylenevinylene Fluorophores.

ABSTRACT: An efficient deep red (DR)-emitting organic solid based on a dicyano-phenylenevinylene derivative was reported. The structural and spectroscopic properties of the solid have been described in terms of crystallographic data and time-dependent DFT analysis. A noteworthy fluorescence quantum yield of 53% was observed for the brightest emitter cast into solid films. This result can be explained in terms of the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect.

Highly efficient solid state catalysis by reconstructed (001) ceria surface.

Project description:Substrate engineering is a key factor in the synthesis of new complex materials. The substrate surface has to be conditioned in order to minimize the energy threshold for the formation of the desired phase or to enhance the catalytic activity of the substrate. The mechanism of the substrate activity, especially of technologically relevant oxide surfaces, is poorly understood. Here we design and synthesize several distinct and stable CeO2 (001) surface reconstructions which are used to grow epitaxial films of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7. The film grown on the substrate having the longest, fourfold period, reconstruction exhibits a twofold increase in performance over surfaces with shorter period reconstructions. This is explained by the crossover between the nucleation site dimensions and the period of the surface reconstruction. This result opens a new avenue for catalysis mediated solid state synthesis.

Highly efficient plastic crystal ionic conductors for solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells.

Project description:We have developed highly efficient, ambient temperature, solid-state ionic conductors (SSICs) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by doping a molecular plastic crystal, succinonitrile (SN), with trialkyl-substituted imidazolium iodide salts. High performance SSICs with enhanced ionic conductivity (2-4?mScm?¹) were obtained. High performance solid-state DSSCs with power conversion efficiency of 7.8% were fabricated using our SSICs combined with unique hierarchically nanostructured TiO? sphere (TiO?-SP) photoelectrodes; these electrodes have significant macroporosity, which assists penetration of the solid electrolyte into the electrode. The performance of our solid-state DSSCs is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest reported thus far for cells using plastic crystal-based SSICs, and is comparable to that of the state-of-the-art DSSCs which use ionic liquid type electrolytes. This report provides a logical strategy for the development of efficient plastic crystal-based SSICs for DSSCs and other electrochemical devices.

Solid-state AIEnh-circularly polarised luminescence of chiral perylene diimide fluorophores.

Project description:Solid-state organic fluorescent materials are important for the development of electroluminescent sensing devices. Herein, we report that N,N'-bis((R)-1-phenylethyl)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide [(R,R)-BPP] and its antipode [(S,S)-BPP], which contain extended π-electrons through planar perylenes, emit solid-state aggregation-induced-enhanced (AIEnh) circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in inorganic (KBr) pellets and organic-polymer-film (PMMA- and myo-IPU-film) states; this CPL is difficult to observe in solution. These chiral perylene fluorophores emit AIEnh-CPL with high dissymmetry factors (g CPL) (up to 2.4 × 10-3) and high quantum yields (Φ F, up to 0.43) in the three solid matrices.

Benzimidazole-Based N,O Boron Complexes as Deep Blue Solid-State Fluorophores.

Project description:Benzimidazole-based boranils were designed and synthesized in order to assess the influence of halogen substituents on their optoelectronic properties. All compounds are photoluminescent in solution and solid state. Compared to the free ligands, the new boranils emit at a lower wavelength, by elimination of the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer observed with the ligands. In the solid state, some of the boranils exhibit a deep blue emission, presenting Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates with an x-component of less than 0.16 and a y-component smaller than 0.04, highly desired values for the development of blue emitting materials.

Development of Novel Solid-State Light-Emitting Materials Based on Pentafluorinated Tolane Fluorophores.

Project description:We herein describe the synthesis of novel pentafluorinated tolane fluorophores, which possess an extended π-conjugated structure with a large molecular dipole moment along the longitudinal axis. We also report a detailed evaluation of both the photophysical and thermal behaviors of these fluorophores. All molecules displayed photoluminescence (PL) characteristics in both the crystalline state and in dilute solutions. The large longitudinal dipole moment induced solvatochromic PL behavior, which switched sensitively with changes in the solvent polarity. In addition, incorporation of the fluorinated tolane-based solid-state light-emitting moiety into the polymer side chain was found to be responsible for the PL characteristics observed in the solid state. It was also noteworthy that the polymerization protocol led to a significant enhancement in the thermal stability, with the thermal decomposition temperature increased by 90 °C. Accordingly, novel solid-state light-emitting materials with high thermal stabilities were successfully developed as promising candidates for use in light-emitting and optoelectronic applications.

Poly(p-phenylenevinylene) nanoparticles modified with antiEGFRvIII for specific glioblastoma therapy.

Project description:Glioblastoma is the most common primary brain cancer and it is nearly impossible to remove the entire tumor with surgery or a single drug. EGFRvIII is the most frequent genetic change associated with glioblastoma, so EGFRvIII-based targeting therapies provide promise for treating glioblastoma. Herein, poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] (PPV) was used as the core to prepare a conjugated polymer nanoparticle (PPVN) modified with anti-EGFRvIII (PPVN-A) that exhibited high ROS generation ability under white light irradiation. PPVN-A could target EGFRvIII-overexpressed tumor cells and damaged more than 90% of tumor cells with the light illumination while PPVN without modification exhibited no obvious cytotoxicity toward these cells under the same condition. Thus, the photodynamic treatment of glioblastoma cells using PPVN-A could be achieved, indicating the potential of anti-EGFRvIII-modified nanoparticles as a therapeutic material for treating glioblastoma in clinic.

Solid-state mechanochemical ω-functionalization of poly(ethylene glycol).

Project description:Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is a linear polymer with a wide range of applications in chemical manufacturing, drug development and nanotechnology. PEG derivatives are being increasingly used to covalently modify small molecule and peptide drugs, as well as bioactive nanomaterials in order to improve solubility in biological serum, reduce immunogenicity, and enhance pharmacokinetic profiles. Herein we present the development of mechanochemical procedures for PEG functionalization without the need for bulk solvents, offering a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to existing solution-based PEG procedures. The herein presented mechanochemical procedures enable rapid and solvent-free derivatization of PEG with tosyl, bromide, thiol, carboxylic acid or amine functionalities in good to quantitative yields and with no polymer chain oligomerization, proving the versatility of the method.

Functionalized [2.2]Paracyclophanedienes as Monomers for Poly(<i>p</i>-phenylenevinylene)s.

Project description:Poly(p-phenylenevinylene)s (PPVs) featuring complex side-chains, to date, have only been synthesized by nonliving polymerization methods which have no control over PPV molecular weights, dispersities, or end groups. [2.2]Paracyclophane-1,9-diene (pCpd) has gained attention as a monomer for its ability to be ring-opened to PPV in a living fashion. pCpd, an organic cyclic scaffold with planar chirality, has seen minimal structural diversity due to the harsh reaction conditions required to afford the highly strained compound. Herein, we introduce a general method to overcome this by targeting the synthesis of a monohydroxy-pCpd via mono-demethylation of a dialkoxy-pCpd. The monohydroxy-pCpd can then be functionalized easily, which we demonstrate using three distinct side-chains with four moieties commonly incorporated in conjugated polymers: an alkyl bromide, an oligo(ethylene glycol) chain, an enantiomerically pure side-chain, and a Boc-protected amine. These monofunctionalized-pCpds were investigated as monomers in the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to afford functionalized PPVs in a living manner. The functional-group-containing PPVs are synthesized with full control over their end groups, repeat units, and dispersities. The feasibility of post-polymerization modifications to incorporate any desired moiety to PPV fabricated by this method was demonstrated using an azide-alkyne click reaction. All synthesized PPVs were soluble in organic solvents and display the same fluorescent emission, indicating their conjugated backbones are unaltered.

Fluorinated solid electrolyte interphase enables highly reversible solid-state Li metal battery.

Project description:Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are receiving great interest because their high mechanical strength and transference number could potentially suppress Li dendrites and their high electrochemical stability allows the use of high-voltage cathodes, which enhances the energy density and safety of batteries. However, the much lower critical current density and easier Li dendrite propagation in SSEs than in nonaqueous liquid electrolytes hindered their possible applications. Herein, we successfully suppressed Li dendrite growth in SSEs by in situ forming an LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) between the SSEs and the Li metal. The LiF-rich SEI successfully suppresses the penetration of Li dendrites into SSEs, while the low electronic conductivity and the intrinsic electrochemical stability of LiF block side reactions between the SSEs and Li. The LiF-rich SEI enhances the room temperature critical current density of Li3PS4 to a record-high value of >2 mA cm-2. Moreover, the Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency was escalated from 88% of pristine Li3PS4 to more than 98% for LiF-coated Li3PS4. In situ formation of electronic insulating LiF-rich SEI provides an effective way to prevent Li dendrites in the SSEs, constituting a substantial leap toward the practical applications of next-generation high-energy solid-state Li metal batteries.

A zwitterionic gel electrolyte for efficient solid-state supercapacitors.

Project description:Gel electrolytes have attracted increasing attention for solid-state supercapacitors. An ideal gel electrolyte usually requires a combination of advantages of high ion migration rate, reasonable mechanical strength and robust water retention ability at the solid state for ensuring excellent work durability. Here we report a zwitterionic gel electrolyte that successfully brings the synergic advantages of robust water retention ability and ion migration channels, manifesting in superior electrochemical performance. When applying the zwitterionic gel electrolyte, our graphene-based solid-state supercapacitor reaches a volume capacitance of 300.8 F cm(-3) at 0.8 A cm(-3) with a rate capacity of only 14.9% capacitance loss as the current density increases from 0.8 to 20 A cm(-3), representing the best value among the previously reported graphene-based solid-state supercapacitors, to the best of our knowledge. We anticipate that zwitterionic gel electrolyte may be developed as a gel electrolyte in solid-state supercapacitors.
