Project description:In this paper, a method was developed to assess the vertical response of piles considering crushing characteristics. A load transfer model of a pile is built and the relationship between the crushing characteristics and load transfer function of a pile was analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the transfer equation of load function considering the crushing characteristics was derived using the finite difference method. The ideal side resistance and the load transfer mechanism of a pile can be obtained by the transfer equation of load function. The predicted response of piles with the proposed method is in good agreement with the response observed in some pile tests reported in the literature. Further study was conducted to discuss the effect of the parameters related to the load transfer model considering crushing characteristics on the load-settlement response of a single pile.

Project description:A composite slab comprised of self-compacting rubber lightweight aggregate concrete (SCRLC) and profiled steel sheeting is a new type of structural element with a series of superior properties. This paper presents an experimental research and finite element analysis (FEA) of the flexural behavior of composite slabs consisting of SCRLC to develop a new floor system. Four composite slabs specimens with different shear spans (450 mm and 800 mm) and SCRLC (0% and 30% in rubber particles substitution ratio) are prepared, and the flexural properties including failure modes, deflection at mid-span, profiled steel sheeting, and concrete surface stain at mid-span and end slippage are investigated by four-point bending tests. The experimental results indicate that applying SCRLC30 in composites slabs will improve the anti-cracking ability under the loading of composite slabs compared with composite slabs consisting of self-compacting lightweight aggregate concrete (SCLC). FEM on the flexural properties of SCRLC composites slabs show that the yield load, ultimate load, and deflection corresponding to the yield load and the ultimate load of composite slabs drop as the rubber particles content increases in SCRLC. The variation of SCRLC strength has less impact on the flexural bearing capacity of corresponding composite slabs. Based on the traditional calculated method of the ultimate bending moment of normal concrete (NC) composite slabs, a modified calculated method for the ultimate bending moment of SCRLC composite slabs is proposed.

Project description:Manufactured sand differs from natural sea and river dredged sand in its physical and mineralogical properties. These can be both beneficial and detrimental to the fresh and hardened properties of concrete. This paper presents the results of a laboratory study in which manufactured sand produced in an industry sized crushing plant was characterised with respect to its physical and mineralogical properties. The influence of these characteristics on concrete workability and strength, when manufactured sand completely replaced natural sand in concrete, was investigated and modelled using artificial neural networks (ANN). The results show that the manufactured sand concrete made in this study generally requires a higher water/cement (w/c) ratio for workability equal to that of natural sand concrete due to the higher angularity of the manufactured sand particles. Water reducing admixtures can be used to compensate for this if the manufactured sand does not contain clay particles. At the same w/c ratio, the compressive and flexural strength of manufactured sand concrete exceeds that of natural sand concrete. ANN proved a valuable and reliable method of predicting concrete strength and workability based on the properties of the fine aggregate (FA) and the concrete mix composition.

Project description:Designing organic afterglow materials with a high efficiency and long lifetime is highly attractive but challenging because of the inherent competition between the luminescence efficiency and lifetime. Here, we propose a simple yet efficient strategy, namely fluorine-induced aggregate-interlocking (FIAI), to realize both an enhanced efficiency and elongated lifetime of afterglow materials by stimulating the synergistic effects of the introduced fluorine atoms to efficiently promote intersystem crossing (ISC) and intermolecular non-covalent interactions for facilitating both the generation of triplet excitons and suppression of non-radiative decays. Thus, the fluorine-incorporated afterglow molecules exhibit greatly enhanced ISC with a rate constant up to 5.84 × 107 s-1 and suppressed non-radiative decay down to 0.89 s-1, resulting in efficient organic afterglow with a simultaneously improved efficiency up to 10.5% and a lifetime of 1.09 s. Moreover, accompanied by the efficient phosphorescence emission especially at cryogenic temperature, color-tunable afterglow was also observed at different temperatures. Therefore, tri-mode multiplexing encryption devices by combining lifetime, temperature and color, and visual temperature sensing were successfully established. The FIAI strategy by addressing fundamental issues of afterglow emission paves the way to develop high-performance organic afterglow materials, opening up a broad prospect of aggregated and excited state tuning of organic solids for emission lifetime-resolved applications.

Project description:The data in this article are related to the research article titled "Flexural Strength determination of Reinforced Concrete Elements with Waste Glass as Partial Replacement for Fine Aggregate" [1]. The article provides information on reinforced concrete beam elements with the fine aggregate partially replaced with waste glass in proportions of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30%. The beam elements were cured and subjected to flexural load after 7, 14, 28 and 90 days. Three samples were tested for each conditions and the average value computed. The tests records include deflection at each gradual increase in the flexural load and the load at final failure.

Project description:Connectivity hyperalignment can be used to estimate a single shared response space across disjoint datasets. We develop a connectivity-based shared response model that factorizes aggregated fMRI datasets into a single reduced-dimension shared connectivity space and subject-specific topographic transformations. These transformations resolve idiosyncratic functional topographies and can be used to project response time series into shared space. We evaluate this algorithm on a large collection of heterogeneous, naturalistic fMRI datasets acquired while subjects listened to spoken stories. Projecting subject data into shared space dramatically improves between-subject story time-segment classification and increases the dimensionality of shared information across subjects. This improvement generalizes to subjects and stories excluded when estimating the shared space. We demonstrate that estimating a simple semantic encoding model in shared space improves between-subject forward encoding and inverted encoding model performance. The shared space estimated across all datasets is distinct from the shared space derived from any particular constituent dataset; the algorithm leverages shared connectivity to yield a consensus shared space conjoining diverse story stimuli.

Project description:This paper presents the residual mechanical properties of concrete made with crushed bricks and clay roof tile aggregates after exposure to high temperatures. One referent mixture and eight mixtures with different percentages of replacement of natural aggregate by crushed bricks and roof tiles are experimentally tested. The properties of the concrete were measured before and after exposure to 200, 400, 600 and 800 °C. In order to evaluate the basic residual mechanical properties of concrete with crushed bricks and roof tiles after exposure to high temperatures, ultrasonic pulse velocity is used as a non-destructive test method and the results are compared with those of a destructive method for validation. The mixture with the highest percentage of replacement of natural aggregate by crushed brick and roof tile aggregate has the best physical, mechanical, and thermal properties for application of such concrete in precast concrete elements exposed to high temperatures.

Project description:We sought to evaluate the brain gene expression profiles of male courtship display. To assess male display and courtship behavior, we designed a courtship preference assay. We evaluated social interactions between males and females using a 40 gallon tank design with a ‘rock’ habitat at one end and ‘sand’ at the other, separated by glass bottom. When parental rock species (Petrotilapia nigra (TaxId 526958), Maylandia zebra (TaxId 106582), Labeotropheus feulliborni) are placed in this tank paradigm, males court females over the rocks. Males of sand species (Mchenga conophorus, Aulonocara baenschi (TaxId 143496), Tramitichromis intermedius (TaxId 323801)) court females over sand and construct species appropriate bowers. When single rock x sand F1 males were placed in this set up with F1 females, males invariably courted females over the ‘rock’ habitat, suggesting genetic dominance. When two rock x sand F1 males were allowed to compete for F1 females in this tank paradigm, something interesting happened. One male, typically the larger, courted females over the rock habitat, and the other simultaneously constructed bowers to court females in the sand. We detected no difference in GSI (gonadal somatic index) between F1 males behaving as ‘socially rock’ vs. ‘socially sand.’ This observation of divergent behavior among interacting F1 brothers suggests an interaction between the genome and the social environment in these males.

Project description:Since high quality natural aggregates are becoming scarce, it is important that industrial recycled products and by-products are used as aggregates for concrete. In Japan, the use of recycled aggregate (RG) is encouraged. Since, strength and durability of recycled aggregate concrete is lower than that of normal aggregate concrete, the use of recycled aggregate has not been significant. In order to improve physical properties of concrete using recycled coarse aggregate, blast furnace slag sand has been proposed. Recently, blast furnace slag sand is expected to improve durability, freezing, and thawing damage of concrete in Japan. Properties of fresh and hardened concrete bleeding, compressive strength, and resistance to freezing and thawing which are caused by the rapid freezing and thawing test using liquid nitrogen is a high loader than the JIS A 1148 A method that were investigated. As a result, concrete using treated low-class recycled coarse aggregate and 50% or 30% replacement of crushed sand with blast furnace slag sand showed the best results, in terms of bleeding, resistance to freezing and thawing.

Project description:A culture-independent diversity assessment of archaea, bacteria and fungi in the Thar Desert in India was made. Six locations in Ajmer, Jaisalmer, Jaipur and Jodhupur included semi-arid soils, arid soils, arid sand dunes, plus arid cryptoendolithic substrates. A real-time quantitative PCR approach revealed that bacteria dominated soils and cryptoendoliths, whilst fungi dominated sand dunes. The archaea formed a minor component of all communities. Comparison of rRNA-defined community structure revealed that substrate and climate rather than location were the most parsimonious predictors. Sequence-based identification of 1240 phylotypes revealed that most taxa were common desert microorganisms. Semi-arid soils were dominated by actinobacteria and alpha proteobacteria, arid soils by chloroflexi and alpha proteobacteria, sand dunes by ascomycete fungi and cryptoendoliths by cyanobacteria. Climatic variables that best explained this distribution were mean annual rainfall and maximum annual temperature. Substrate variables that contributed most to observed diversity patterns were conductivity, soluble salts, Ca(2+) and pH. This represents an important addition to the inventory of desert microbiota, novel insight into the abiotic drivers of community assembly, and the first report of biodiversity in a monsoon desert system.
