Survey data on Vietnamese retail investors? trading behavior and their psychological and behavioral patterns.

ABSTRACT: The data article describes self-assessments of 621 Vietnamese retail investors on their trading behavior, psychological attributes and socio-demographic characteristics. The dataset was obtained from a randomized survey of 3144 Vietnamese participants on financial attitudes and practice that has been used in Phan et al. [5]. A supplemental material data contains the full text, codes and numerical values of survey instruments. Discussion of theoretical frameworks and the development of hypothesis and measurement of survey variables are found in the associated research article [6].

Has financial attitude impacted the trading activity of retail investors during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Project description:Financial attitude influences the financial behavior of retail investors. Although the extant research has acknowledged and examined this relationship, the measures of financial attitude and behavior still vary widely and are generally posed as a series of questions rather than statements. In addition to this, there is insufficient knowledge regarding retail investors' behavior in the face of a health crisis, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. This study addresses these gaps in the prior literature by examining the relative influence of six dimensions of financial attitude, namely, financial anxiety, optimism, financial security, deliberative thinking, interest in financial issues, and needs for precautionary savings, on the trading activity of retail investors during the pandemic. Data were collected from 404 respondents and analyzed using the artificial neural network (ANN) method. The results revealed that all six dimensions had a positive influence on trading activity, with interest in financial issues exerting the strongest influence, followed by deliberative thinking. The study thus contributes important inferences for researchers and managers. Highlights • The study examined how financial attitude influences the financial behavior of retail investors.• Six dimensions were examined to explicate the financial attitude of individuals.• The dimensions and trading behavior had both linear and non-linear relationships.• Interest in financial issues had the highest relative importance in predicting the trading activity.• Optimism and financial anxiety had the least influence on trading during COVID-19.

Does retail investors beat institutional investors?--Explanation of game stop's stock price anomalies.

Project description:This paper studies the relation of information cost, retail investor sentiment and asset pricing. Our motivation to study this model is to learn why retail investors could move asset price away from fundamental values. In the model, the institutional investors are pessimistic and the retail investors are optimistic, the ratio of the expected utility of informed and rational but uninformed institutional investors increases first and then decreases as the cost of information increases. In addition, a large number of retail investors promoted substantial increases in stock prices. This model provides part of the explanation for the unusually high stock price of Game Stop in early 2021 that retail investors cliqued and confronted institutional investors.

Are the shareholding and trading behaviors of diverse investors affected by the relaxation of day trading?

Project description:The day trading in Taiwanese stock market expands considerably at the beginning of 2016, which increases the transactions of stocks consequently and sparks our interest in exploring the issue of day trading. In this study, we use the data of Taiwan Stock Exchange listed firms to investigate whether the day trading volume over total trading volume (hereinafter referred to as the day trading ratio) and the turnover ratio enhanced by the increase of day trading volume would affect the shareholding and trading behaviors of diverse institutional and individual investors. Unquestionably, we bring out several impressive findings. First, foreign institutional investors would not prefer holding or trading the stocks with high day trading ratios, whereas individual investors would prefer holding these kinds of stocks. We infer that this finding might result from the fundamental and the speculative concerns of these various investors. Second, domestic institutional investors and security dealers would prefer trading the stocks with high turnover ratios, but foreign institutional investors still lack of interest in trading these stocks, implying that the investment strategies would be dissimilar among various institutional investors. Since foreign institutional investors are regarded as the successful institutional investors in Taiwan, we argue that our revealed results may help market participants trace the behaviors of diverse investors, especially the foreign institutional investors, after day trading relaxation in Taiwan.

Can retail investors induce corporate green innovation? -Evidence from Baidu Search Index.

Project description:China's rapid economic development has caused some environmental damage in recent years. The popularity of the Internet has enriched the ways for investors to obtain information, which would exert an impact on corporate environmental behavior. Focusing on micro-enterprise green innovation from the perspective of informal regulation, this paper investigates the impact of investor attention on corporate green innovation. This study takes Chinese A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2018 as samples, constructs panel fixed-effects models and adopts multiple linear, Logistic and Tobit regressions. This article finds that investor attention, measured by the web search index, can significantly improve corporate green innovation. The conclusion is still valid after a series of robust tests. Besides, mechanism tests reveal that investor attention can promote corporate green innovation by improving the implementation efficiency of punitive environmental regulation, the use efficiency of environmental subsidies, and by increasing the reputation cost of enterprises. In additional tests, this paper further clarifies that investors' attention to negative public opinion can play a better role in environmental governance, and reveals the reason why investors are motivated to improve corporate green innovation. This research puts forward a unique perspective, which extends the understanding of informal environmental regulation and enriches research on green innovation at the micro-enterprise level, promoting the cross research of finance and environmental protection.

Recognizing Personality Traits Using Consumer Behavior Patterns in a Virtual Retail Store.

Project description:Virtual reality (VR) is a useful tool to study consumer behavior while they are immersed in a realistic scenario. Among several other factors, personality traits have been shown to have a substantial influence on purchasing behavior. The primary objective of this study was to classify consumers based on the Big Five personality domains using their behavior while performing different tasks in a virtual shop. The personality recognition was ascertained using behavioral measures received from VR hardware, including eye-tracking, navigation, posture and interaction. Responses from 60 participants were collected while performing free and directed search tasks in a virtual hypermarket. A set of behavioral features was processed, and the personality domains were recognized using a statistical supervised machine learning classifier algorithm via a support vector machine. The results suggest that the open-mindedness personality type can be classified using eye gaze patterns, while extraversion is related to posture and interactions. However, a combination of signals must be exhibited to detect conscientiousness and negative emotionality. The combination of all measures and tasks provides better classification accuracy for all personality domains. The study indicates that a consumer's personality can be recognized using the behavioral sensors included in commercial VR devices during a purchase in a virtual retail store.

An analysis of investors' behavior in Bitcoin market.

Project description:As an emerging digital asset, Bitcoin has been traded for more than a decade, reaching an impressively high market capitalization and continuing to expand its volume of trading at a rapid pace. Many countries have legalized or are considering legalizing a trading platform for this asset, and a set of companies worldwide accept it as a medium of exchange. As a result of this expansion, many studies in finance literature have focused on studying the efficiency of this cryptocurrency. In line with this literature, this paper investigates, using the abnormal returns and abnormal trading volumes methodologies, the dynamics of investors' reaction to the arrival of unexpected favorable and unfavorable information regarding the Bitcoin market in the context of the three famous hypotheses: the overreaction, the uncertain information, and the efficient market hypotheses. Overall, we find evidence confirming that the Bitcoin market tends to mature over time. More precisely, over the entire analyzed period, investors behave in accordance with the predictions of the uncertain information hypothesis when positive and negative events occur. However, splitting the timespan into sub-periods provides interesting insights. Remarkably in this respect is the fact that starting with the second sub-period, the response of investors in the Bitcoin market supports, in a moderate manner, the postulate of the efficient market hypothesis when favorable events are addressed. Moreover, our findings reveal that during the pandemic period, the efficiency of Bitcoin has increased, thus turning this stressful period into an advantage for this cryptocurrency. This improved market efficiency is also supported by the abnormal trading volume analysis.

Data modelling of subsistence retail consumer purchase behavior in South Africa.

Project description:The purpose of the data is to model the purchase behavior of the subsistence consumer within the retail environment in one of the largest townships in South Africa. The data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire from a sample of 281 consumers. The Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) approach was adopted using the SmartPLS 3 software to analyze the data. The insights from the dataset identify convenience, price sensitivity, perceived product quality, customer trust, and perceived value as factors that stimulate purchase behavior. Furthermore, perceived value only mediates the relationship between perceived product quality and purchase intention. Researchers could use the data to position customer trust as a dependent variable to unearth more valuable insights. Additionally, the segment in question is also known to be price-sensitive. It would be intriguing to find out the role of price sensitivity as a moderator.

Survey data on Vietnamese propensity to attend periodic general health examinations.

Project description:As general living standards rise, so does the demand for periodic general health examinations (GHEs). Research on the subject, however, has reached opposing conclusions on the value of GHEs, although methodological limitations in previous works make these differences hard to resolve. Here, we present data from a socio-demographic survey of behaviours and tendencies concerning periodic GHE attendance in Vietnam. These data are shown to be suitable for evaluating the impact of demographic and socio-economic elements on regular health examinations. By presenting the methods used in this survey and by describing the enquiries mentioned in the dataset, this article aims to promote data-collecting methodologies that can help policy-makers and health communicators derive practical conclusions.

Panel data to investigate pricing behavior in the Spanish retail fuel market.

Project description:The data described in this article were collected daily over the period 18 August 2014 to 15 June 2015 from the website of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism http://geoportalgasolineras.es. The database includes information on almost all gas stations located in Spain that sell to the public. For each gas station we have information of daily diesel prices (both posted price and net of taxes), brands and locations (latitude and longitude) and the Brent price. We also share a Stata program file to identify the nearest competitors of each gas station and their brand. The program also computes the distance to the nearest refinery and its brand. The data base can be used for analyzing firms pricing behavior focusing, for example, on asymmetric pricing, cartels or vertical integration, among other topics. This data base is used in the paper [2] "Effects of antitrust prosecution on retail fuel prices" that analyze the impact on prices of an antitrust sanction imposed to several brands on February 2015.

Quantifying trading behavior in financial markets using Google Trends.

Project description:Crises in financial markets affect humans worldwide. Detailed market data on trading decisions reflect some of the complex human behavior that has led to these crises. We suggest that massive new data sources resulting from human interaction with the Internet may offer a new perspective on the behavior of market participants in periods of large market movements. By analyzing changes in Google query volumes for search terms related to finance, we find patterns that may be interpreted as "early warning signs" of stock market moves. Our results illustrate the potential that combining extensive behavioral data sets offers for a better understanding of collective human behavior.
