Project description:The data described in this article were collected daily over the period June 10, 2010, to November 25, 2012, from the website of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. The database includes information about fuel stations regarding to their prices (both gross and net of taxes), brand, location (latitude and longitude), and postal code in the Spanish provinces of Madrid and Barcelona. Moreover, obtaining the postal codes has allowed us to select those stations that are operating within the metropolitan areas of Madrid and Barcelona. By considering those fuel stations that uninterruptedly provided prices during the entire period, the data can be especially useful to explore the dynamics of prices in fuel markets. This is the case of Balaguer and Ripollés (2016), "Asymmetric fuel price responses under heterogeneity" [1], who, taking into account the presence of the potential heterogeneity of the behaviour of fuel stations, used this statistical information to perform an analysis on asymmetric fuel price responses.

Project description:This study examines the link between health shocks and labor market outcomes in the United Kingdom. For sample periods of up to 9 years, I use longitudinal data from the British Household Panel Survey to test how sudden health shocks affect a number of labor market outcomes, such as labor and household income, employment status, and hours worked. Additionally, the study examines potential mechanisms underlying the link between health declines and labor market outcomes. By estimating propensity score matching difference-in-differences models, the study shows that sudden health declines lead to significant and persistent reductions in earnings. The effects are strongest for individuals experiencing severe health shocks, males, individuals with higher education and those working in managerial jobs. When examining potential channels, I provide evidence that increased health care expenditures and health care usage as well as reduced work productivity can explain the observed effects on labor market outcomes.

The dataset was obtained from a randomized survey of 3144 Vietnamese participants on financial attitudes and practice that has been used in Phan et al. [5]. A supplemental material data contains the full text, codes and numerical values of survey instruments. Discussion of theoretical frameworks and the development of hypothesis and measurement of survey variables are found in the associated research article [6].

Project description:The institutional environment not only has a great impact on economic development but also has a certain impact on labor agglomeration. This paper explains the phenomenon of labor agglomeration from the perspective of the labor market institutional environment. Taking the labor market institutional environment including social contract environment and labor contract environment as the premise, it is considered that a good labor institutional market can promote labor agglomeration and technological progress can stimulate the agglomeration of highly-skilled talents through theoretical analysis. Based on the provincial panel data from 2001 to 2017, the empirical analysis is conducted to verify the relevant factors through the dynamic spatial Durbin model. The paper finally puts forward some policy suggestions to maintain a good institutional environment of the labor market, including that the local government should continue to improve the labor dispute settlement system, strengthen the protection of labor rights and interests, and enhance the institutional environment of the regional labor market.

Project description:Species-specific monitoring through large shark fin market surveys has been a valuable data source to estimate global catches and international shark fin trade dynamics. Hong Kong and Guangzhou, mainland China, are the largest shark fin markets and consumption centers in the world. We used molecular identification protocols on randomly collected processed fin trimmings (n = 2000) and non-parametric species estimators to investigate the species composition of the Guangzhou retail market and compare the species diversity between the Guangzhou and Hong Kong shark fin retail markets. Species diversity was similar between both trade hubs with a small subset of species dominating the composition. The blue shark (Prionace glauca) was the most common species overall followed by the CITES-listed silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini), smooth hammerhead shark (S. zygaena) and shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus). Our results support previous indications of high connectivity between the shark fin markets of Hong Kong and mainland China and suggest that systematic studies of other fin trade hubs within Mainland China and stronger law-enforcement protocols and capacity building are needed.

Project description:Cities import energy, which in combination with their typically high solar absorption and low moisture availability generates the urban heat island effect (UHI). The UHI, combined with human-induced warming, makes our densely populated cities particularly vulnerable to climate change. We examine the utility of solar photovoltaic (PV) system deployment on urban rooftops to reduce the UHI, and we price one potential value of this impact. The installation of PV systems over Sydney, Australia reduces summer maximum temperatures by up to 1 °C because the need to import energy is offset by local generation. This offset has a direct environmental benefit, cooling local maximum temperatures, but also a direct economic value in the energy generated. The indirect benefit associated with the temperature changes is between net AUD$230,000 and $3,380,000 depending on the intensity of PV systems deployment. Therefore, even very large PV installations will not offset global warming, but could generate enough energy to negate the need to import energy, and thereby reduce air temperatures. The energy produced, and the benefits of cooling beyond local PV installation sites, would reduce the vulnerability of urban populations and infrastructure to temperature extremes.

Project description:Randomized controlled clinical trials and real-world observational studies provide complementary information but with different validity. Some clinical questions (disease behavior, prognosis, validation of outcome measures, comparative effectiveness, and long-term safety of therapies) are often better addressed using real-world data reflecting larger, more representative populations. Integration of disease history, clinician-reported outcomes, performance tests, and patient-reported outcome measures during patient encounters; imaging and biospecimen analyses; and data from wearable devices increase dataset utility. However, observational studies utilizing these data are susceptible to many potential sources of bias, creating barriers to acceptance by regulatory agencies and the medical community. Therefore, data standardization and validation within datasets, harmonization across datasets, and application of appropriate analysis methods are important considerations. We review approaches to improve the scope, quality, and analyses of real-world data to advance understanding of multiple sclerosis and its treatment, as an example of opportunities to better support patient care and research.

Project description:Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that can cause invasive disease with high mortality in immunocompromised individuals and can survive in a variety of food-associated environments for a long time. L. monocytogenes clonal complex (CC) 87 is composed of ST87 and three other STs and has been identified as the most common subgroup associated with both foods and human clinical infections in China. Therefore, the persistence of CC87 L. monocytogenes in food-associated environments poses a significant concern for food safety. In this study, 83 draft genomes of CC87 L. monocytogenes, including 60 newly sequenced genomes, were analyzed with all isolates from our previous surveillance in Zigong, Sichuang, China. Sixty-eight of the studied isolates were isolated from one retail market (M1 market), while the others were from seven other markets (M2-M8 markets) in the same city. Whole-genome multilocus sequence typing (wg-MLST) and the whole-genome single nucleotide polymorphism (wg-SNP) analysis were performed. Three persistent contamination routes were identified in the M1 market, caused by 2 clusters (A and B) and a wgST31 type. Cluster A isolates were associated with the persistent contamination in a raw meat stall (M1-S77), while Cluster B isolates caused a persistent contamination in aquatic foods stalls. Five wgST31 isolates caused persistent contamination in a single aquatic stall (M1-S65). A pLM1686-like plasmid was found in all Cluster A isolates. A novel plasmid, pLM1692, a truncated pLM1686 plasmid without the cadmium, and other heavy metal resistance genes were conserved in all wgST31 isolates. By comparing persistent and putative non-persistent isolates, four genes that were all located in the prophage comK might be associated with persistence. These findings enhanced our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of contamination and assist in formulating targeted strategies for the prevention and control of L. monocytogenes transmission from the food processing chain to humans. IMPORTANCE Contamination of food by Listeria monocytogenes at retail level leads to potential consumption of contaminated food with high risk of human infection. Our previous study found persistent contamination of CC87 L. monocytogenes from a retail market in China through pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing. In this study, whole-genome sequencing was used to obtain the highest resolution inference of the source and reasons for persistent contamination; meat grinders and minced meat were the major reservoir of persistent contamination in meat stalls, whereas fishponds were the major reservoir in seafood stalls, with different L. monocytogenes isolates involved. These isolates carried different properties such as plasmids and prophages, which may have contributed to their ability to survive or adapt to the different environments. Our findings suggest that whole-genome sequencing will be an effective surveillance tool to detect persistent L. monocytogenes contamination in retail food markets and to design new control strategies to improve food safety.

Project description:BackgroundIn recent years, the price of many older generic drugs, including numerous antibiotics, has increased substantially. We sought to analyze recent price changes and extent of generic competition within a cohort of commonly prescribed off-patent oral antibiotics.MethodsWe extracted oral antibiotics recommended for common outpatient conditions in the Infectious Diseases Society of America Practice Guidelines. We determined all US Food and Drug Administration-approved manufacturers for each formulation and strength in 2013 and 2016 and the yearly national average drug acquisition cost (NADAC) price between 2013 and 2016. Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare changes in drug prices and number of manufacturers from 2013 to 2016. Spearman correlation coefficient was used to assess the association between drug prices and number of manufacturers.ResultsTwenty-two antibiotics (81 formulations and strengths) were analyzed. There was no change in the median NADAC price or the number of manufacturers between 2013 and 2016. However, 11 (14%) formulations increased in price by 90% or more, and 13 (16%) had 2 or fewer manufacturers during all 4 years. Antibiotic prices were negatively associated with the number of available manufacturers.ConclusionsWhile prices and the number of manufacturers for common oral antibiotics were overall stable between 2013 and 2016, reduced manufacturer competition was associated with increased prices. A subset of antibiotics exhibited substantial price increases, and most, but not all, had limited manufacturer competition. Policy solutions are needed to ensure availability of low-cost, essential generic antibiotics.

Project description:Although the wood-based panel industry is not considered to be a water-consuming sector, it generates ca. 600 M m3 of wastewater every year on a global scale. The wastewater is usually highly polluted and environmentally toxic even after dilution. Common wastewater treatment techniques require high-energy input or addition of various chemicals to the treated wastewater, which cause secondary pollution and production of toxic sludge. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have become an attractive technology, allowing for zero-energy treatment of various types of wastewater with simultaneous production of electric current. Recent investigations have shown that MFCs can also be utilized for sustainable treatment and energy production from the wastewater generated by the wood-based panel industry. This article contains a critical summary of the investigations in this field as well as a discussion of the research needed and perspectives for the future.
