New Type of Halogen Bond: Multivalent Halogen Interacting with π- and σ-Electrons.

ABSTRACT: MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations were performed for complexes of BrF₃ and BrF₅ acting as Lewis acids through the bromine centre, with species playing a role of Lewis base: dihydrogen, acetylene, ethylene, and benzene. The molecular hydrogen donates electrons by its σ-bond, while in remaining moieties-in complexes of hydrocarbons; such an electron transfer follows from π-electrons. The complexes are linked by a kind of the halogen bond that is analyzed for the first time in this study, i.e., it is the link between the multivalent halogen and π or σ-electrons. The nature of such a halogen bond is discussed, as well as various dependencies and correlations are presented. Different approaches are applied here, the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules, Natural Bond Orbital method, the decomposition of the energy of interaction, the analysis of electrostatic potentials, etc.

Project description:Halogen bonds are a highly directional class of intermolecular interactions widely employed in chemistry and chemical biology. This linear interaction is commonly viewed to be analogous to the hydrogen bond because hydrogen bonding models also intuitively describe the σ-symmetric component of halogen bonding. The possibility of π-covalency in a halogen bond is not contemplated in any known models. Here we present evidence of π-covalency being operative in halogen bonds formed between chloride and halogenated triphenylamine-based radical cations. We reach this conclusion through computational analysis of chlorine K-edge X-ray absorption spectra recorded on these halogen bonded pairs. In light of this result, we contend that halogen bonding is better described by analogy to metal coordination bonds rather than hydrogen bonds. Our revised description of the halogen bond suggests that these interactions could be employed to influence the electronic properties of conjugated molecules in unique ways.

A-X⋯σ Interactions-Halogen Bonds with σ-Electrons as the Lewis Base Centre.

Project description:CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//ωB97XD/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations were performed for halogen-bonded complexes. Here, the molecular hydrogen, cyclopropane, cyclobutane and cyclopentane act as Lewis base units that interact through the electrons of the H-H or C-C σ-bond. The FCCH, ClCCH, BrCCH and ICCH species, as well as the F2, Cl2, Br2 and I2 molecular halogens, act as Lewis acid units in these complexes, interacting through the σ-hole localised at the halogen centre. The Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM), the Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) and the Energy Decomposition Analysis (EDA) approaches were applied to analyse these aforementioned complexes. These complexes may be classified as linked by A-X···σ halogen bonds, where A = C, X (halogen). However, distinct properties of these halogen bonds are observed that depend partly on the kind of electron donor: dihydrogen, cyclopropane, or another cycloalkane. Examples of similar interactions that occur in crystals are presented; Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) searches were carried out to find species linked by the A-X···σ halogen bonds.

Unconventional Type III Halogen···Halogen Interactions: A Quantum Mechanical Elucidation of σ-Hole···σ-Hole and Di-σ-Hole Interactions.

Project description:Herein, two unconventional type III halogen···halogen interactions, namely, σ-hole···σ-hole and di-σ-hole interactions, were reported in a series of halogenated complexes. In type III, the A-halogen···halogen angles are typically equal to 180°, and the occurrence of σ-hole on halogen atoms is mandatory. Using diverse quantum mechanical calculations, it was demonstrated that the occurrence of such interactions with binding energies varied from -0.35 to -1.30 kcal/mol. Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory-based energy decomposition analysis (SAPT-EDA) revealed that type III interactions are dominated by dispersion forces, while electrostatic forces are unfavorable. Cambridge Structure Database (CSD) survey unveiled the experimental evidence for the manifestation of σ-hole···σ-hole interactions in crystal structures. This work might be deemed as a foundation for a vast number of forthcoming crystal engineering and materials science studies.

Mechanochemical Preparation of Dipyridyl-Naphthalenediimide Cocrystals: Relative Role of Halogen-Bond and π-π Interactions.

Project description:Naphthalenediimide derivates are a class of π-conjugated molecules largely investigated in the literature and used as building blocks for metal-organic frameworks or coformers for hydrogen-bond-based cocrystals. However, their tendency to establish halogen-bond interactions remains unexplored. By using a crystalline engineering approach, we report here four new cocrystals with N,N'-di(4-pyrydyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxidiimide and diiodo-substituted coformers, easily obtained via a mechanochemical protocol. Cocrystals were characterized via NMR, electron ionization mass spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystallographic structures were then finely examined and correlated with energy framework calculations to understand the relative contribution of halogen-bond and π-π interactions toward framework stabilization.

Project description:A detailed Valence Bond-Spin Coupled analysis of a series of halogenated molecules is here reported, allowing to get a rigorous ab initio demonstration of the qualitative models previously proposed to explain the origin of halogen bonding. The concepts of σ-hole and negative belt observed around the halogen atoms in the electrostatic potential maps are here interpreted by analysis of the relevant Spin Coupled orbitals.

Project description:The halogen bond occurs when there is evidence of a net attractive interaction between an electrophilic region associated with a halogen atom in a molecular entity and a nucleophilic region in another, or the same, molecular entity. In this fairly extensive review, after a brief history of the interaction, we will provide the reader with a snapshot of where the research on the halogen bond is now, and, perhaps, where it is going. The specific advantages brought up by a design based on the use of the halogen bond will be demonstrated in quite different fields spanning from material sciences to biomolecular recognition and drug design.

On the Nature of σ-σ, σ-π, and π-π Stacking in Extended Systems.

Project description:Stacking interactions have been evaluated, employing computational methods, in dimers formed by analogous aliphatic and aromatic species of increasing size. Changes in stability as the systems become larger are mostly controlled by the balance of increasing repulsion and dispersion contributions, while electrostatics plays a secondary but relevant role. The interaction energy increases as the size of the system grows, but it does much faster in π-π dimers than in σ-π complexes and more remarkably than in σ-σ dimers. The main factor behind the larger stability of aromatic dimers compared to complexes containing aliphatic molecules is related to changes in the properties of the aromatic systems due to electron delocalization leading to larger dispersion contributions. Besides, an extra stabilization in π-π complexes is due to the softening of the repulsive wall in aromatic species that allows the molecules to come closer.

Nitropyridine-1-Oxides as Excellent π-Hole Donors: Interplay between σ-Hole (Halogen, Hydrogen, Triel, and Coordination Bonds) and π-Hole Interactions.

Project description:In this manuscript, we use the primary source of geometrical information, i.e., Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations (PBE0-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory) to demonstrate the relevance of π-hole interactions in para-nitro substituted pyridine-1-oxides. More importantly, we show that the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) value above and below the π-hole of the nitro group is largely influenced by the participation of the N-oxide group in several interactions like hydrogen-bonding (HB) halogen-bonding (XB), triel bonding (TrB), and finally, coordination-bonding (CB) (N+-O- coordinated to a transition metal). The CSD search discloses that p-nitro-pyridine-1-oxide derivatives have a strong propensity to participate in π-hole interactions via the nitro group and, concurrently, N-oxide group participates in a series of interactions as electron donor. Remarkably, the DFT calculations show from strong to moderate cooperativity effects between π-hole and HB/XB/TrB/CB interactions (σ-bonding). The synergistic effects between π-hole and σ-hole bonding interactions are studied in terms of cooperativity energies, using MEP surface analysis and the Bader's quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM).
