One-Pot Synthesis of Co-Based Coordination Polymer Nanowire for Li-Ion Batteries with Great Capacity and Stable Cycling Stability.

ABSTRACT: Nanowire coordination polymer cobalt-terephthalonitrile (Co-BDCN) was successfully synthesized using a simple solvothermal method and applied as anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). A reversible capacity of 1132 mAh g^-1 was retained after 100 cycles at a rate of 100 mA g^-1, which should be one of the best LIBs performances among metal organic frameworks and coordination polymers-based anode materials at such a rate. On the basis of the comprehensive structural and morphology characterizations including fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and scanning electron microscopy, we demonstrated that the great electrochemical performance of the as-synthesized Co-BDCN coordination polymer can be attributed to the synergistic effect of metal centers and organic ligands, as well as the stability of the nanowire morphology during cycling.

Protective Coating for Stable Cycling of Li-Metal Batteries Based on Cellulose and Single-Ion Conducting Polymer.

Project description:The thermodynamically unstable interface between metallic lithium and electrolyte poses a major problem for the massive commercialization of Li-metal batteries. In this study, we propose the use of a multicomponent protective coating based on cellulose modified with dimethylthexylsilyl group (TDMSC), single-ion conducting polymer P(LiMTFSI), and LiNO3 (TDMSC-P(LiMTFSI)-LiNO3, namely PTL). The coating shows its positive effect by increasing the Coulombic efficiency in Li || Cu cells from 95.9 and 98.6% for bare Li, to >99.3% for Li coated (Li@PTL), with 1 M LiFSI in FEC:DEC and 1 M LiFSI in DME electrolyte, respectively. Symmetrical Li || Li PTL-coated cells exhibit a much more prolonged and stable cycling with a slower increase in overpotential compared to bare Li cells. Li@PTL anodes enable improved cycling of Li@PTL/LFP cells compared to noncoated cells in liquid electrolytes. In this respect, inhibition of high surface area lithium growth is confirmed through postcycling scanning electron microscopy. Remarkably, dendrite-free galvanostatic cycling is demonstrated in laboratory-scale solid-state battery cells assembled with LFP composite cathode (catholyte configuration with PEO + LiTFSI as ionically conducting binder) and a cross-linked PEO-based solid polymer electrolyte. The PTL protective coating enables improved stability of Li metal batteries in combination with smooth transport of Li+ at the electrode-electrolyte interface and homogeneous lithium coating, highlighting its promising prospects in enhancing the performance and safety of lithium metal batteries by properly tuning the synergy between the coating components.

High-Ni cathode material improved with Zr for stable cycling of Li-ion rechargeable batteries.

Project description:The Zr solvent solution method, which allows primary and secondary particles of LiNi0.90Co0.05Mn0.05O2 (NCM) to be uniformly doped with Zr and simultaneously to be coated with an Li2ZrO3 layer, is introduced in this paper. For Zr doped NCM, which is formed using the Zr solvent solution method (L-NCM), most of the pinholes inside the precursor disappear owing to the diffusion of the Zr dopant solution compared with Zr-doped NCM, which is formed using the dry solid mixing method from the (Ni0.90Co0.05Mn0.05)(OH)2 precursor and the Zr source (S-NCM), and Li2ZrO3 is formed at the pinhole sites. The mechanical strength of the powder is enhanced by the removal of the pinholes by the formation of Li2ZrO3 resulting from diffusion of the solvent during the mixing process, which provides protection from cracking. The coating layer functions as a protective layer during the washing process for removing the residual Li. The electrochemical performance is improved by the synergetic effects of suitable coatings and the enhanced structural stability. The capacity-retentions for 2032 coin cells are 86.08%, 92.12%, and 96.85% at the 50th cycle for pristine NCM, S-NCM, and L-NCM, respectively. The superiority of the liquid mixing method is demonstrated for 18 650 full cells. In the 300th cycle in the voltage range of 2.8-4.35 V, the capacity-retentions for S-NCM and L-NCM are 77.72% and 81.95%, respectively.

In Situ Formed Ag-Li Intermetallic Layer for Stable Cycling of All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries.

Project description:With the timely advent of the electric vehicle era, where battery stability has emerged as a major issue, all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) have attracted significant attention as the game changer owing to their high stability. However, despite the introduction of a densely packed solid electrolyte (SE) layer, when Li is used to increase the energy density of the cell, the short-circuit problem caused by Li protrusion is unavoidable. Furthermore, most strategies to control nonuniform Li growth are so complicated that they hinder the practical application of ASSBs. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes an Ag-Li alloy anode via mass-producible roll pressing method. Unlike previous studies reporting solid-solution-based metal alloys containing a small amount of lithiophilic Ag, the in situ formed and Ag-enriched Ag-Li intermetallic layer mitigates uneven Li deposition and maintains a stable SE/Ag-Li interface, facilitating reversible Li operation. Contrary to Li cells showing frequent initial short-circuit, the cell incorporating the Ag-Li anode exhibits a better capacity retention of 94.3% for 140 cycles, as well as stable cycling even under 12 C. Through a facile approach enabling the fabrication of a large-area anode with controllable Li growth, this study provides practical insight for developing ASSBs with stable cyclabilities.

Mesoscale origin of the enhanced cycling-stability of the Si-conductive polymer anode for Li-ion batteries.

Project description:Electrode used in lithium-ion battery is invariably a composite of multifunctional components. The performance of the electrode is controlled by the interactive function of all components at mesoscale. Fundamental understanding of mesoscale phenomenon sets the basis for innovative designing of new materials. Here we report the achievement and origin of a significant performance enhancement of electrode for lithium ion batteries based on Si nanoparticles wrapped with conductive polymer. This new material is in marked contrast with conventional material, which exhibit fast capacity fade. In-situ TEM unveils that the enhanced cycling stability of the conductive polymer-Si composite is associated with mesoscale concordant function of Si nanoparticles and the conductive polymer. Reversible accommodation of the volume changes of Si by the conductive polymer allows good electrical contact between all the particles during the cycling process. In contrast, the failure of the conventional Si-electrode is probed to be the inadequate electrical contact.

High-Rate Organic Cathode Constructed by Iron-Hexaazatrinaphthalene Tricarboxylic Acid Coordination Polymer for Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:The sluggish ion-transport in electrodes and low utilization of active materials are critical limitations of organic cathodes, which lead to the slow reaction dynamics and low specific capacity. In this study, the hierarchical tube is constructed by iron-hexaazatrinaphthalene tricarboxylic acid coordination polymer (Fe-HATNTA), using HATNTA as the self-engaged template to coordinate with Fe2+ ions. This Fe-HATNTA tube with hierarchical porous structure ensures the sufficient contact between electrolyte and active materials, shortens the diffusion distance, and provides more favorable transport pathways for ions. When employed as the cathode for rechargeable Li-ion batteries, Fe-HATNTA delivers a high specific capacity (244 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1 , 91% of theoretical capacity), excellent rate capability (128 mAh g-1 at 9 A g-1 ), and a long-term cycle life (73.9% retention over 3000 cycles at 5 A g-1 ). Moreover, the Li+ ions storage and conduction mechanisms are further disclosed by the ex situ and in situ characterizations, kinetic analyses, and theoretical calculations. This work is expected to boost further enthusiasm for developing the hierarchical structured metal-organic coordination polymers with superb ionic storage and transport as high-performance organic cathodes.

A New Method to Prepare Stable Polyaniline Dispersions for Highly Loaded Cathodes of All-Polymer Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:A new method for the preparation of polyaniline (PANI) films that have a 2D structure and can record high active mass loading (up to 30 mg cm-2) via acid-assisted polymerization in the presence of concentrated formic acid was developed. This new approach represents a simple reaction pathway that proceeds quickly at room temperature in quantitative isolated yield with the absence of any byproducts and leads to the formation of a stable suspension that can be stored for a prolonged time without sedimentation. The observed stability was explained by two factors: (a) the small size of the obtained rod-like particles (50 nm) and (b) the change of the surface of colloidal PANI particles to a positively charged form by protonation with concentrated formic acid. The films cast from the concentrated suspension were composed of amorphous PANI chains assembled into 2D structures with nanofibrillar morphology. Such PANI films demonstrated fast and efficient diffusion of the ions in liquid electrolyte and showed a pair of revisable oxidation and reduction peaks in cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, owing to the high mass loading, specific morphology, and porosity, the synthesized polyaniline film was impregnated by a single-ion conducting polyelectrolyte-poly(LiMn-r-PEGMm) and characterized as a novel lightweight all-polymeric cathode material for solid-state Li batteries by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques.

An entanglement association polymer electrolyte for Li-metal batteries.

Project description:To improve the interface stability between Li-rich Mn-based oxide cathodes and electrolytes, it is necessary to develop new polymer electrolytes. Here, we report an entanglement association polymer electrolyte (PVFH-PVCA) based on a poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVFH) matrix and a copolymer stabilizer (PVCA) prepared from acrylonitrile, maleic anhydride, and vinylene carbonate. The entangled structure of the PVFH-PVCA electrolyte imparts excellent mechanical properties and eliminates the stress arising from dendrite growth during cycling and forms a stable interface layer, enabling Li//Li symmetric cells to cycle steadily for more than 4500 h at 8 mA cm-2. The PVCA acts as a stabilizer to promote the formation of an electrochemically robust cathode-electrolyte interphase. It delivers a high specific capacity and excellent cycling stability with 84.7% capacity retention after 400 cycles. Li1.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08O2/PVFH-PVCA/Li full cell achieved 125 cycles at 1 C (4.8 V cut-off) with a stable discharge capacity of ~2.5 mAh cm-2.

Lithium-compatible and air-stable vacancy-rich Li9N2Cl3 for high-areal capacity, long-cycling all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Project description:Attaining substantial areal capacity (>3 mAh/cm2) and extended cycle longevity in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries necessitates the implementation of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) capable of withstanding elevated critical current densities and capacities. In this study, we report a high-performing vacancy-rich Li9N2Cl3 SSE demonstrating excellent lithium compatibility and atmospheric stability and enabling high-areal capacity, long-lasting all-solid-state lithium metal batteries. The Li9N2Cl3 facilitates efficient lithium-ion transport due to its disordered lattice structure and presence of vacancies. Notably, it resists dendrite formation at 10 mA/cm2 and 10 mAh/cm2 due to its intrinsic lithium metal stability. Furthermore, it exhibits robust dry-air stability. Incorporating this SSE in Ni-rich LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 cathode-based all-solid-state batteries, we achieve substantial cycling stability (90.35% capacity retention over 1500 cycles at 0.5 C) and high areal capacity (4.8 mAh/cm2 in pouch cells). These findings pave the way for lithium metal batteries to meet electric vehicle performance demands.

Molecular brush-based ultrathin polymer electrolytes with stable interfaces for high-voltage large-areal-capacity lithium metal batteries.

Project description:Polymer electrolytes hold great promise for long-cycling lithium metal batteries, but their unsatisfactory ionic conductivities and unstable interfacial contacts with electrodes greatly limit their practical applications under high cut-off voltage and large areal capacity conditions. Herein, a super-structured multifunctional molecular brush, BC-g-P(CCMA-co-TFEMA) (BC = bacterial cellulose; CCMA = (2-oxo-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl) methyl methacrylate; TFEMA = 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate), has been designed to develop an ultrathin polymer electrolyte with superior ionic conductivity and stable electrolyte/electrode interfaces. The cyclic carbonate group in CCMA can weaken the binding of solvents and anions with lithium ions, thereby enhancing ionic transport. Meanwhile, the fluorine-containing group in TFEMA is beneficial for simultaneously constructing LiF-rich electrolyte/anode and electrolyte/cathode interfaces with enhanced stability. Moreover, the robust BC backbone provides the polymer electrolyte with outstanding mechanical properties. With such polymer electrolytes, a remarkable capacity retention of 83% has been demonstrated for Li/LiFePO4 cells at 1C after 1000 cycles. Remarkably, the solid-state full cell with a high-loading LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathode delivers a high discharge specific capacity of 204 mA h g-1 for more than 400 cycles at a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V. This work provides a novel design principle for advanced electrolytes of high-voltage and large-areal-capacity lithium metal batteries.

Nanosponge-Based Composite Gel Polymer Electrolyte for Safer Li-O2 Batteries.

Project description:Li-O2 batteries represent a promising rechargeable battery candidate to answer the energy challenges our world is facing, thanks to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density. However, the poor cycling stability of the Li-O2 system and, overall, important safety issues due to the formation of Li dendrites, combined with the use of organic liquid electrolytes and O2 cross-over, inhibit their practical applications. As a solution to these various issues, we propose a composite gel polymer electrolyte consisting of a highly cross-linked polymer matrix, containing a dextrin-based nanosponge and activated with a liquid electrolyte. The polymer matrix, easily obtained by thermally activated one pot free radical polymerization in bulk, allows to limit dendrite nucleation and growth thanks to its cross-linked structure. At the same time, the nanosponge limits the O2 cross-over and avoids the formation of crystalline domains in the polymer matrix, which, combined with the liquid electrolyte, allows a good ionic conductivity at room temperature. Such a composite gel polymer electrolyte, tested in a cell containing Li metal as anode and a simple commercial gas diffusion layer, without any catalyst, as cathode demonstrates a full capacity of 5.05 mAh cm-2 as well as improved reversibility upon cycling, compared to a cell containing liquid electrolyte.
