USDA-ARS Colorado maize growth and development, yield and water-use under strategic timing of irrigation, 2012-2013.

ABSTRACT: This data set was collected over two years, 2012-2013, on maize under 12 irrigation treatments with varying levels of deficit during late-vegetative and grain-filling growth stages in semi-arid Northern Colorado supplied with surface drip irrigation. The data set, which can be found online at the USDA National Agricultural Library data repository (doi: 10.15482/USDA.ADC/1439968), includes hourly weather data; plant growth and canopy development over the season; final biomass, yield and harvest index; and daily water balance data including irrigation, precipitation, soil water content, and estimates of crop evapotranspiration. Soil parameters for the site, as well as data from a previous experiment on maize with different treatments can also be found online (doi: 10.15482/USDA.ADC/1254006). Here, we describe the synthesis of data collected from 2012 to 2013. These data can be used for modeling the relationship between maize yield and field-level water use under season water availability.

Project description:Laser land levelling is expanding rapidly in the rice-wheat (RW) and maize-wheat (MW) systems of the Indo-Gangetic Plains of India and Pakistan. Current practice is to level to zero (0%) gradient, whereas a small gradient (e.g. 0.1%) is typically used in developed countries. Therefore, experiments were conducted in farmers' plots (~15 m x 40 m) in the Eastern Gangetic Plains to evaluate laser levelling with a 0.1% gradient in comparison with 0% and farmer levelling practice (FL). The study was conducted over two years in RW and MW systems. In the MW system, raised beds in plots lasered with 0% and 0.1% gradients were also evaluated. Laser levelling with 0% gradient significantly reduced irrigation amount and/or increased irrigation water productivity (WPi) in all crops/systems grown on the flat compared to FL except for wheat in the MW system. While there was a consistent trend for higher yield with a 0% gradient compared with FL, the differences were not significant in any crop/system. For the RW system, the results suggest no to marginal benefits in irrigation amount and WPi from levelling with a 0.1% gradient in comparison with 0% gradient. In that system, by far the bigger gains were from changing from FL to laser levelling with 0% gradient. This resulted in substantial reductions in irrigation amount, which greatly increased WPi in both crops (by ~40%), while yield was not affected. Rice grown with FL was not profitable, but lasering with 0% gradient significantly increased gross margin for rice, wheat and the total RW system. As for the RW system, levelling to 0% with a flat configuration significantly increased WPi of both crops in the MW system compared to FL, but by a lesser proportion. Raised beds significantly increased yield of maize by 8% (0.5 t ha-1), reduced irrigation amount by 20% (40 mm) and increased WPi by 34% (1.0 kg m-3) in comparison with the laser levelled flat plots. Gross margin of the MW system on beds was 17-20% higher than FL, and gross margin with beds on a 0.1% gradient was significantly higher than either gradient on the flat. The results suggest that the gains from levelling with a 0.1% gradient compared to 0% are marginal; however, this may change if the goal of consolidation of small farmer plots into larger fields becomes a reality provided there is a proportionate increase in irrigation flow rates, and ability to drain.

Project description:The World Collection of Sugarcane and Related Grasses, maintained at the USDA-ARS in Miami, FL, is one of the largest sugarcane germplasm repositories in the world. However, the genetic integrity of the Saccharum spp. germplasm in this collection has not been fully analyzed. In this study, we employed a single-dose SNP panel to genotype 901 sugarcane accessions, representing six Saccharum species and various hybrids. Our analysis uncovered a high rate of clone mislabeling in the collection. Specifically, we identified 86 groups of duplicates, characterized by identical SNP genotypes, which encompassed 211 accessions (23% of the total clones), while 135 groups, constituting 471 clones (52% of the total), exhibited near-identical genotypes. In addition, twenty-seven homonymous groups were detected, which shared the same clone name but differed in SNP genotypes. Hierarchical analysis of population structure partitioned the Saccharum germplasm into five clusters, corresponding to S. barberi, S. sinense, S. officinarum, S. spontaneum and S. robustum/S. edule. An assignment test, based on the five Saccharum species, enabled correcting 141 instances of mislabeled species memberships and inaccuracies. Moreover, we clarified the species membership and parentage of 298 clones that had ambiguous passport records (e.g., 'Saccharum spp', 'unknown', and 'hybrid'). Population structure and genetic diversity in these five species were further supported by Principal Coordinate Analysis and neighbor-joining clustering analysis. Analysis of Molecular Variance revealed that within-species genetic variations accounted for 85% of the total molecular variance, with the remaining 15% attributed to among-species genetic variations. The single-dose SNP markers developed in this study offer a robust tool for characterizing sugarcane germplasm worldwide. These findings have important implications for sugarcane genebank management, germplasm exchange, and crop genetic improvement.
