Microwave assisted Suzuki-Miyaura and Ullmann type homocoupling reactions of 2- and 3-halopyridines using a Pd(OAc)2/benzimidazolium salt and base catalyst system.

ABSTRACT: A number of novel benzimidazole derivatives 1-4 were synthesized and the catalytic activity of these compounds in a catalytic system consisting of a benzimidazolium salt/Pd(OAc)2/K2CO3 were investigated in the Suzuki-Miyaura and Ullmann type homocoupling reactions under microwave irradiation. We obtained both cross coupling and homocoupling products of pyridine and some side products such as dimethylaminopyridine and unsubstituted pyridine.

Project description:A procedure for benzylic Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling under microwave conditions has been developed. These conditions allowed for heterocyclic compounds to be coupled. Optimum conditions found were Pd(OAc)(2), JohnPhos as the catalyst and ligand, potassium carbonate as base, and DMF as the solvent. Using these conditions, a library of structurally diverse compounds was synthesized.

Suzuki-Miyaura Catalyst-Transfer Polycondensation of Triolborate-Type Carbazole Monomers.

Project description:Herein, we report the Suzuki-Miyaura catalyst-transfer polycondensation (SCTP) of triolborate-type carbazole monomers, i.e., potassium 3-(6-bromo-9-(2-octyldodecyl)-9H-carbazole-2-yl)triolborate (M1) and potassium 2-(7-bromo-9-(2-octyldodecyl)-9H-carbazole-2-yl) triolborate (M2), as an efficient and versatile approach for precisely synthesizing poly[9-(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-carbazole] (3,6-PCz) and poly[9-(2-octyldodecyl)-2,7-carbazole] (2,7-PCz), respectively. The SCTP of triolborate-type carbazole monomers was performed in a mixture of THF/H2O using an initiating system consisted of 4-iodobenzyl alcohol, Pd2(dba)3•CHCl3, and t-Bu3P. In the SCTP of M1, cyclic by-product formation was confirmed, as reported for the corresponding pinacolboronate-type monomer. By optimizing the reaction temperature and reaction time, we successfully synthesized linear end-functionalized 3,6-PCz for the first time. The SCTP of M2 proceeded with almost no side reaction, yielding 2,7-PCz with a functional initiator residue at the α-chain end. Kinetic and block copolymerization experiments demonstrated that the SCTP of M2 proceeded in a chain-growth and controlled/living polymerization manner. This is a novel study on the synthesis of 2,7-PCz via SCTP. By taking advantage of the well-controlled nature of this polymerization system, we demonstrated the synthesis of high-molecular-weight 2,7-PCzs (Mn = 5-38 kg mol-1) with a relatively narrow ÐM (1.35-1.48). Furthermore, we successfully synthesized fluorene/carbazole copolymers as well as 2,7-PCz-containing diblock copolymers, demonstrating the versatility of the present polymerization system as a novel synthetic strategy for well-defined polycarbazole-based materials.

Base-free nickel-catalysed decarbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of acid fluorides.

Project description:The Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of organoboron nucleophiles with aryl halide electrophiles is one of the most widely used carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions in organic and medicinal chemistry1,2. A key challenge associated with these transformations is that they generally require the addition of an exogenous base, the role of which is to enable transmetallation between the organoboron nucleophile and the metal catalyst3. This requirement limits the substrate scope of the reaction because the added base promotes competitive decomposition of many organoboron substrates3-5. As such, considerable research has focused on strategies for mitigating base-mediated side reactions6-12. Previous efforts have primarily focused either on designing strategically masked organoboron reagents (to slow base-mediated decomposition)6-8 or on developing highly active palladium precatalysts (to accelerate cross-coupling relative to base-mediated decomposition pathways)10-12. An attractive alternative approach involves identifying combinations of catalyst and electrophile that enable Suzuki-Miyaura-type reactions to proceed without an exogenous base12-14. Here we use this approach to develop a nickel-catalysed coupling of aryl boronic acids with acid fluorides15-17, which are formed in situ from readily available carboxylic acids18-22. This combination of catalyst and electrophile enables a mechanistic manifold in which a 'transmetallation-active' aryl nickel fluoride intermediate is generated directly in the catalytic cycle13,16. As such, this transformation does not require an exogenous base and is applicable to a wide range of base-sensitive boronic acids and biologically active carboxylic acids.

Supported palladium nanoparticles synthesized by living plants as a catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura reactions.

Project description:The metal accumulating ability of plants has previously been used to capture metal contaminants from the environment; however, the full potential of this process is yet to be realized. Herein, the first use of living plants to recover palladium and produce catalytically active palladium nanoparticles is reported. This process eliminates the necessity for nanoparticle extraction from the plant and reduces the number of production steps compared to traditional catalyst palladium on carbon. These heterogeneous plant catalysts have demonstrated high catalytic activity in Suzuki coupling reactions between phenylboronic acid and a range of aryl halides containing iodo-, bromo- and chloro- moieties.

Palladium catalyst imbedded in polymers of intrinsic microporosity for the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction.

Project description:Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are porous polymers with rigid ladder-type chain structures. Synthesizing these polymers usually involves the step polymerization of two types of monomer, namely, active fluorine-substituted aromatic ring monomers and phenolic monomers. Herein, we report a new PIMs preparation method using self-synthesized fluorinated monomers and common monomer 5,5',6,6'-tetrahydroxy-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl spirobisindane. The fluorinated monomers were synthesized through the imidization of tetrafluorophthalic anhydride and aromatic diamines. The resulting PIMs served as a support for palladium, with the formed catalyst showing potential for application in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction.

Enabling Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of Lewis-basic arylboronic esters with a nonprecious metal catalyst.

Project description:The high cost and negative environmental impact of precious metal catalysts has led to increased demand for nonprecious alternatives for widely practiced reactions such as the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling (SMC). Ni-catalyzed versions of this reaction have failed to achieve high reactivity with Lewis-basic arylboron nucleophiles, especially pinacolboron esters. We describe the development of (PPh2Me)2NiCl2 as an inexpensive and air-stable precatalyst that addresses this challenge. Under activation by n-BuMgCl, this complex can catalyze the coupling of synthetically important heteroaryl pinacolborons with heteroaryl halides. Mildly basic conditions (aqueous K3PO4) allow the reaction to tolerate sensitive functional groups that were incompatible with other Ni-SMC methods. Experimental and computational studies suggest that catalyst inhibition by substitution of PPh2Me from Ni(ii) intermediates by Lewis basic reactants and products is disfavored relative to more commonly employed ligands in the Ni-SMC, which allows it to operate efficiently in the presence of Lewis bases such as unhindered pyridines.

Magnetic Lignosulfonate-Supported Pd Complex: Renewable Resource-Derived Catalyst for Aqueous Suzuki-Miyaura Reaction.

Project description:A novel strategy is described to prepare magnetic Pd nanocatalyst by conjugating lignin with Fe3O4 nanoparticles via activation of calcium lignosulfonate, followed by combination with Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Tethering 5-amino-1H-tetrazole to calcium lignosulfonate-magnetite hybrid through 3-chloropropyl triethoxysilane enabled coordination of Pd salt with Fe3O4-lignosulfonate@5-amino-1H-tetrazole. The underlying changes of the lignosulfonate are identified, and the structural morphology of attained Fe3O4-lignosulfonate@5-amino-1H-tetrazole-Pd(II) (FLA-Pd) is characterized by Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetry differential thermal analysis, energy-dispersive spectrometry, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The synthesized FLA-Pd displayed high activity for phosphine-free C(sp2)-C(sp2) coupling in water, and the catalyst could be reused for seven successive cycles.

DFT Investigation of Suzuki-Miyaura Reactions with Aryl Sulfamates Using a Dialkylbiarylphosphine-Ligated Palladium Catalyst.

Project description:Aryl sulfamates are valuable electrophiles for cross-coupling reactions because they can easily be synthesized from phenols and can act as directing groups for C-H bond functionalization prior to cross-coupling. Recently, it was demonstrated that (1-tBu-Indenyl)Pd(XPhos)Cl (XPhos = 2-dicyclohexylphosphino-2',4',6'-triisopropylbiphenyl) is a highly active precatalyst for room-temperature Suzuki-Miyaura couplings of a variety of aryl sulfamates. Herein, we report an in-depth computational investigation into the mechanism of Suzuki-Miyaura reactions with aryl sulfamates using an XPhos-ligated palladium catalyst. Particular emphasis is placed on the turnover-limiting oxidative addition of the aryl sulfamate C-O bond, which has not been studied in detail previously. We show that bidentate coordination of the XPhos ligand via an additional interaction between the biaryl ring and palladium plays a key role in lowering the barrier to oxidative addition. This result is supported by NBO and NCI-Plot analysis on the transition states for oxidative addition. After oxidative addition, the catalytic cycle is completed by transmetalation and reductive elimination, which are both calculated to be facile processes. Our computational findings explain a number of experimental results, including why elevated temperatures are required for the coupling of phenyl sulfamates without electron-withdrawing groups and why aryl carbamate electrophiles are not reactive with this catalyst.

Acceleration of Batch-type Heterogeneous Ligand-free Suzuki-Miyaura Reactions with Polymer Composite Supported Pd Catalyst.

Project description:An efficient and recyclable palladium (II) catalyst supported on a double-structured amphiphilic polymer composite was reported previously containing a polymer hydrogel within macroporous polystyrene (PS) microspheres. However, some critical questions have been unaddressed. First, the catalyst accelerated the heterogeneous ligand-free batch Suzuki-Miyaura reaction in a H2O/EtOH mixture solution at room temperature in the presence of air, which could be ascribed to the "on-water" effect taking place at the interface of the aqueous-organic and basic-aqueous phases created by sodium carbonate in H2O/EtOH. To this acceleration, the double-structured amphiphilic polymer composite can also contribute by providing hydrogels inside the macroporous PS that served as a microreactor. This microreactor allowed the reactions to quickly proceed across the two immiscible (i.e. aqueous-organic and basic-aqueous) phases. Moreover, hydrogels containing hydroxyl groups can also serve as phase-transfer catalysts (PTC) to promote the Suzuki reaction. Second, the deactivated catalyst recovered its initial catalytic activity after overnight air exposure. This observation indicates the importance of oxygen in the activation/deactivation of Pd metals, as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements which revealed different Pd oxidation states with various morphologies before and after Suzuki reactions.

Amine-Functionalized Graphene Oxide-Stabilized Pd Nanoparticles (Pd@APGO): A Novel and Efficient Catalyst for the Suzuki and Carbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura Coupling Reactions.

Project description:Palladium nanoparticles (NPs) are decorated on the surface of an amine-functionalized graphene oxide (Pd@APGO) and characterized by using various analytical techniques. In this methodology, the surface of graphene oxide is modified using the amine functional groups which help stabilization and distribution of Pd NPs very well and increases the surface electron density of NPs by electron donating from amine groups. This developed catalyst shows a high catalytic activity toward the Suzuki coupling and carbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions at mild reaction conditions. The amine on the graphene oxide plays a very crucial role to stabilize and increase the electron density of Pd NPs and prevents the leaching of Pd metals. The Pd@APGO catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity (>90%) with a large range of substrates for both of the reactions and provides five recycle runs without the loss of its activity.
