Datasets of the phosphorus content in laundry and dishwasher detergents.

ABSTRACT: This data article provides the data of Phosphorus emissions from laundry and dishwasher detergents as part of the Phosphorus emissions from households. The household emissions are presented in the research article "Global nitrogen and phosphorus in urban waste water based on the Shared Socio-economic pathway" (van Puijenbroek et al., 2019) [1]. Laundry and dishwasher detergents are a major source of phosphorus loading of aquatic ecosystems in countries with a substantial use of laundry and dishwasher machines. In this article, datasets are presented with the global use of laundry and dishwasher detergents and the Phosphorus emissions due to laundry and dishwasher detergents. These results are presented for 10 world regions for 1970 and 2010, and for 2050 with 5 Shared Socio-economic Pathways. The outlook results for 2050 were based on the growth in income and population and on environmental policy for the introduction of Phosphorus free detergents.

Project description:Multi-modal imaging, by light-microscopy (LM) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), holds promise for examining the brain across various resolutions and scales. While MRI acquires images in three dimensions, acquisition of intact whole-brain by LM requires a process of tissue clearing that renders the brain transparent. Removal of lipids (delipidation) is a critical step in the tissue clearing process, and was previsouly suggested to be the cause for absence of MRI contrast in cleared brains. Yet, the association between MRI contrast, delipidation and the different clearing techniques is debatable. Here, we provide datasets concerning lipid-content in cleared brain tissues obtained by various approaches. Fixed mouse and rat brains were cleared by CLARITY, Scale, uDISCO and ECi clearing techniques. Lipid-content was assessed at various intermediate steps of the different clearing methods, as well as at the end of the processes. Methods employed included whole brain MRI acquisition, Oil Red O (ORO)- and carbocyanine DiI-staining of cryosections, and DiI-washout assay from brain slices. MRI contrast-to-noise ratio, staining intensities and integrity of tissue were systematically analyzed. We demonstrate that lipid electrophoresis, an essential step of the CLARITY approach, engenders progressive reduction in MRI contrast in non-cleared (PFA-fixed) control brains, as well as strongly reduces contrast from uDISCO and ECi-cleared brains. ORO minimally stained CLARITY-cleared brains, however efficiently labelled uDISCO and ECi-cleared brains. Conversely, and in contrast to ORO-staining, DiI equally stained control, CLARITY, ECi and uDISCO-cleared brains. Both ORO- and DiI-staining demonstrated impairment in brain tissue integrity following CLARITY, but less so in uDISCO and ECi brains. DiI-washout assay demonstrated that each of the solvents employed along the process of uDISCO and ECi are highly delipidating, as well as the SDS-electrophoresis employed during CLARITY clearing. However, Scale treatment preserved most of the DiI dye. These data emphasize the variability in lipid assessment of cleared tissues by common techniques, and may help to resolve the contribution of lipids in brain MRI contrast.

Project description:Phosphorus (P) deficiency in early lactating dairy cows is receiving increased attention because of incentives aiming at curtailing environmental pollution with P by reducing dietary P in ruminant diets. An in-vitro study using bovine hepatocytes incubated for 7 days with phosphate (Pi) concentrations of 0.9, 1.8 or 2.7 mmol/L, and an in-vivo study feeding late pregnant dairy cows diets with either adequate (0.28% and 0.44% in DM ante-partum and post-partum respectively) or low P content (0.15% and 0.20% in DM ante-partum and post-partum respectively) from 4 weeks before to 4 weeks after calving were conducted to explore effects of P deprivation on liver function. In vitro the relative abundance of mRNA of key enzymes of the carbohydrate metabolism in incubated hepatocytes and liver metabolites in culture medium were determined. In vivo health and productivity of experimental cows on low and adequate dietary P supply were monitored, and liver tissue and blood samples were obtained repeatedly. Liver tissue was assayed for its triacylglycerol-, mineral and water content as well as for the relative abundance of mRNA of enzymes of the carbohydrate-, fat- and protein metabolism. Reduced Pi-availability was not associated with altered enzyme transcription rates or metabolic activity in-vitro. The most prominent clinical finding associated with P deprivation in-vivo was feed intake depression developing after the first week of lactation. Accordingly cows on low P diets had lower milk yield and showed more pronounced increases in liver triacylglycerol after calving. Although the liver P content decreased in P deficient cows, neither negative effects on enzyme transcription rates nor on blood parameters indicative of impaired liver metabolic activity or liver injury were identified. These results indicate the P deprivation only indirectly affects the liver through exacerbation of the negative energy balance occurring as P deficient cows become anorectic.
