Nanocasting of Periodic Mesoporous Materials as an Effective Strategy to Prepare Mixed Phases of Titania.

ABSTRACT: Mesoporous titanium dioxide materials were prepared using a nanocasting technique involving silica SBA-15 as the hard-template. At an optimal loading of titanium precursor, the hexagonal periodic array of pores in SBA-15 was retained. The phases of titanium dioxide could be easily varied by the number of impregnation cycles and the nature of titanium alkoxide employed. Low number of impregnation cycles produced mixed phases of anatase and TiO₂(B). The mesoporous TiO₂ materials were tested for solar hydrogen production, and the material consisting of 98% anatase and 2% TiO₂(B) exhibited the highest yield of hydrogen from the photocatalytic splitting of water. The periodicity of the pores was an important factor that influenced the photocatalytic activity. This study indicates that mixed phases of titania containing ordered array of pores can be prepared by using the nanocasting strategy.

Mesoporous Silica and Titania-Based Materials for Stability Enhancement of Polyphenols.

Project description:To improve phytochemical stability, polyphenolic extracts prepared from Salvia officinalis L., which is a valuable source of phytocompounds with health benefits, were embedded into mesopores of silica, titania, or titania-ceria materials. Ethanolic and hydroalcoholic extracts were prepared by conventional, microwave- or ultrasound-assisted extraction. The influence of the extraction conditions on chemical profile, radical scavenger activity (RSA), and antimicrobial potential of the extracts was assessed. The extracts were characterized by spectrophotometric determination of total polyphenols, flavonoids, chlorophyll pigment contents, as well as RSA. A reverse phase HPLC- PDA analysis was performed for the identification and quantification of extract polyphenols. The extract-loaded materials exhibited an enhanced RSA compared to the free extract after several months of storage, resulting in better polyphenol stability over time following embedding into a mesoporous matrix. Selected extracts free and embedded into mesoporous support were tested against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923; the best antimicrobial activity was obtained for S. aureus. A slight improvement in antimicrobial activity was observed for the ethanolic extract prepared by ultrasound-assisted extraction following embedding into the TiO2 matrix compared to MCM-41 silica due to the support contribution.

Boron Nitride-Titania Mesoporous Film Heterostructures.

Project description:The fabrication of optically active heterostructures in the shape of mesostructured thin films is a highly challenging task. It requires an integrated process to allow in one-step incorporating the two-dimensional materials within the mesoporous ordered host without disrupting the pore organization. Hexagonal boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have been successfully introduced into titania mesoporous films using a template-assisted sol-gel synthesis and evaporation-induced self-assembly. Two types of BN sheets have been used, with and without defects, to investigate the role of defects in heterostructure properties. It has been found that the defects increase the ultraviolet radiation A (UVA) absorbance and enhance the photocatalytic response of the film. The BN sheets are optically transparent and do not exhibit any photocatalytic property but contribute to anatase crystallization via heterogeneous nucleation.

Efficient Photocatalytic Activities of TiO2 Hollow Fibers with Mixed Phases and Mesoporous Walls.

Project description:Currently, Degussa P25, with the typical mixed phases of anatase and rutile TiO2, is widely applied as the commercial photocatalysts. However, there are still some of obstacles for the P25 nanoparticles with totally high photocatalytic activities, especially for the catalytic stability due to their inevitable aggregation of the nanoparticles when used as the photocatalysts. In the present work, we reported the exploration of a novel TiO2 photocatalyst, which could offer an ideal platform for synergetic combination of the mixed-phase composition, hollow architecture and mesoporous walls for the desired excellent photocatalytic efficiency and robust stability. The mesoporous TiO2 hollow nanofibers were fabricated via a facile single capillary electrospinning technique, in which the foaming agents were used for creating mesopores throughout the walls of the hollow fibers. The obtained hollow fibers exhibit a high purity and possess the mixed phases of 94.6% anatase and 5.4% rutile TiO2. As compared to P25, the as-fabricated mesoporous TiO2 hollow fibers exhibited much higher efficient photocatalytic activities and stabilities toward the hydrogen evolution with a rate of ~499.1 μmol g(-1)·h(-1) and ~99.5% degradation Rhodamine B (RhB) in 60 min, suggesting their promising application in efficient photocatalysts.

Delayed Thiol-Epoxy Photopolymerization: A General and Effective Strategy to Prepare Thick Composites.

Project description:Photoinduced thiol-epoxy click polymerization possesses both the characteristics and advantages of photopolymerization and click reactions. However, the photopolymerization of pigmented or highly filled thiol-epoxy thick composites still remains a great challenge due to the light screening effect derived from the competitive absorption, reflection, and scattering of the pigments or functional fillers. In this article, we present a simple and versatile strategy to prepare thick composites via delayed thiol-epoxy photopolymerization. The irradiation of a small area with a light-emitting diode (LED) point light source at room temperature leads to the decomposition of a photobase generator and the released active basic species can uniformly disperse throughout the whole system, including unirradiated areas, via mechanical stirring. No polymerization was observed at room temperature and therefore the liquid formulations can be further processed with molds of arbitrary size and desired shapes. It is only by increasing the temperature that base-catalyzed thiol-epoxy polymerization occurs and controllable preparation of thick thiol-epoxy materials can be achieved. The formed networks display excellent uniformity in different radii and depths with comparable functionality conversions, similar T g values, and thermal decomposition temperatures. The presented strategy can be applied to prepare thick composites with glass fibers possessing improved mechanical properties and dark composites containing 2 wt % carbon nanotubes.

Catalytic Behavior of Chromium Oxide Supported on Nanocasting-Prepared Mesoporous Alumina in Dehydrogenation of Propane.

Project description:Mesoporous alumina with narrow pore size distribution centered in the range of 4.4-5.0 nm and with a specific surface area as high as 270 m²·g-1 was prepared via the nanocasting approach using a CMK-3 carbon replica as a hard template. Based on this support, a series of catalysts containing 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 wt % of chromium was prepared by incipient wetness impregnation, characterized, and studied in the dehydrogenation of propane to propene (PDH). Cr species in three oxidation states-Cr(III), Cr(V) and Cr(VI)-were found on the oxidized surface of the catalysts. The concentration of these species varied with the total Cr loading. Temperature-programmed reduction (H₂-TPR) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis-DRS) studies revealed that Cr(VI) species dominated at the lowest Cr content. An increase in the Cr loading resulted in an appearance of an increasing amount of Cr(III) oxide. UV-Vis-DRS measurements performed in situ during the PDH process showed that at the beginning of the catalytic test Cr(VI) species were reduced to Cr(III) redox species. A crucial role of the redox species in the PDH process over the catalysts with the low Cr content was confirmed. The stability test for the catalyst containing 20 wt % of Cr showed that this sample exhibited the reproducible catalytic performance after the first four regeneration-dehydrogenation cycles. Moreover, this catalyst had higher resistance on deactivation during the PDH process as compared to the reference catalyst with the same Cr loading, but was supported on commercially available alumina.

Tailoring Mesoporous Titania Features by Ultrasound-Assisted Sol-Gel Technique: Effect of Surfactant/Titania Precursor Weight Ratio.

Project description:A mesoporous titania structure has been prepared using the ultrasound-assisted sol-gel technique in order to find out a way to tailor its structure. The TiO2 obtained was compared to the same version of titania but synthesized by a conventional sol-gel method with the objective of understanding the effect of ultrasound in the synthesis process. All synthesis experiments were focused on the preparation of a titania photocatalyst. Thus, the anatase photocatalytic active phase of titania was proven by X-ray diffraction. Additionally, the ultrasonation treatment proved to increase the crystallinity of titania samples, being one of the requirements to having good photocatalytic activity for titania. The influence of surfactant/titania precursor weight ratio on the structural (XRD), textural (N2-sorption measurements), morphological (TEM), surface chemistry (FTIR) and optical properties (UVDR) was investigated. It was observed that the crystallite size, specific surface area, band gap energy and even photocatalytic activity was affected by the synergism occurring between cavitation effect and the surfactant/titania precursor weight ratio. The study yielded interesting great results that could be considered for further application of ultrasound to tailor mesoporous titania features via sol-gel soft template synthesis, against conventional sol-gel process.

Antibacterial performance of nanocrystallined titania confined in mesoporous silica nanotubes.

Project description:In this paper, we study synthesis and characteristics of mesoporous silica nanotubes modified by titanium dioxide, as well as their antimicrobial properties and influence on mitochondrial activity of mouse fibroblast L929. Nanocrystalized titania is confined in mesopores of silica nanotubes and its light activated antibacterial response is revealed. The analysis of the antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli. (ATCC 25922) shows strong enhancement during irradiation with the artificial visible and ultraviolet light in respect to the commercial catalyst and control sample free from the nanomaterials. In darkness, the mesoporous silica/titania nanostructures exhibited antibacterial activity dependent on the stirring speed of the suspension containing nanomaterials. Obtained micrograph proved internalization of the sample into the microorganism trough the cell membrane. The analysis of the mitochondrial activity and amount of lactate dehydrogenase released from mouse fibroblast cells L929 in the presence of the sample were determined with LDH and WST1 assays, respectively. The synthesized silica/titania antibacterial agent also exhibits pronounced photoinduced inactivation of the bacterial growth under the artificial visible and UV light irritation in respect to the commercial catalyst. Additionally, mesoporous silica/titania nanotubes were characterized in details by means of high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), XRD and BET Isotherm.

Supported Pt Nanoparticles on Mesoporous Titania for Selective Hydrogenation of Phenylacetylene.

Project description:Semi-hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is one of the most important industrial reactions. However, it remains technically challenging to obtain high alkene selectivity especially at a high alkyne conversion because of kinetically favorable over hydrogenation. In this contribution, we show that supported ultrasmall Pt nanoparticles (2.5 nm) on mesoporous TiO2 (Pt@mTiO2) remarkably improve catalytic performance toward semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene. Pt@mTiO2 is prepared by co-assembly of Pt and Ti precursors with silica colloidal templates via an evaporation-induced self-assembly process, followed by further calcination for thermal decomposition of Pt precursors and crystallization of mTiO2 simultaneously. As-resultant Pt@mTiO2 discloses a high hydrogenation activity of phenylacetylene, which is 2.5 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. More interestingly, styrene selectivity over Pt@mTiO2 remains 100% in a wide phenylacetylene conversion window (20-75%). The styrene selectivity is >80% even at 100% phenylacetylene conversion while that of the commercial Pt/C is 0%. The remarkable styrene selectivity of the Pt@mTiO2 is derived from the weakened styrene adsorption strength on the atop Pt sites as observed by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy with CO as a probe molecule (CO-DRIFTS). Our strategy provides a new avenue for promoting alkyne to alkene transformation in the kinetically unfavorable region through novel catalyst preparation.

Distribution of functional groups in periodic mesoporous organosilica materials studied by small-angle neutron scattering with in situ adsorption of nitrogen.

Project description:Periodic mesoporous materials of the type (R'O)(3)Si-R-Si(OR')(3) with benzene as an organic bridge and a crystal-like periodicity within the pore walls were functionalized with SO(3)H or SO(3) (-) groups and investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) with in situ nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. If N(2) is adsorbed in the pores the SANS measurements show a complete matching of all of the diffraction signals that are caused by the long-range ordering of the mesopores in the benzene-PMO, due to the fact that the benzene-PMO walls possess a neutron scattering length density (SLD) similar to that of nitrogen in the condensed state. However, signals at higher q-values (>1 1/Å) are not affected with respect to their SANS intensity, even after complete pore filling, confirming the assumption of a crystal-like periodicity within the PMO material walls due to π-π interactions between the organic bridges. The SLD of pristine benzene-PMO was altered by functionalizing the surface with different amounts of SO(3)H-groups, using the grafting method. For a low degree of functionalization (0.81 mmol SO(3)H·g(-1)) and/or an inhomogeneous distribution of the SO(3)H-groups, the SLD changes only negligibly, and thus, complete contrast matching is still found. However, for higher amounts of SO(3)H-groups (1.65 mmol SO(3)H·g(-1)) being present in the mesopores, complete matching of the neutron diffraction signals is no longer observed proving that homogeneously distributed SO(3)H-groups on the inner pore walls of the benzene-PMO alter the SLD in a way that it no longer fits to the SLD of the condensed N(2).

Catalyst-free synthesis of transparent, mesoporous diamond monoliths from periodic mesoporous carbon CMK-8.

Project description:We report on the synthesis of optically transparent, mesoporous, monolithic diamond from periodic mesoporous carbon CMK-8 at a pressure of 21 GPa. The phase transformation is already complete at a mild synthesis temperature of 1,300 degrees C without the need of a catalyst. Surprisingly, the diamond is obtained as a mesoporous material despite the extreme pressure. X-ray diffraction, SEM, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Z-contrast experiments suggest that the mesoporous diamond is composed of interconnected diamond nanocrystals having diameters around 5-10 nm. The Brunauer Emmett Teller surface area was determined to be 33 m2 g(-1) according Kr sorption data. The mesostructure is diminished yet still detectable when the diamond is produced from CMK-8 at 1,600 degrees C and 21 GPa. The temperature dependence of the porosity indicates that the mesoporous diamond exists metastable and withstands transformation into a dense form at a significant rate due to its high kinetic inertness at the mild synthesis temperature. The findings point toward ultrahard porous materials with potential as mechanically highly stable membranes.
