Boron Nitride-Titania Mesoporous Film Heterostructures.

ABSTRACT: The fabrication of optically active heterostructures in the shape of mesostructured thin films is a highly challenging task. It requires an integrated process to allow in one-step incorporating the two-dimensional materials within the mesoporous ordered host without disrupting the pore organization. Hexagonal boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have been successfully introduced into titania mesoporous films using a template-assisted sol-gel synthesis and evaporation-induced self-assembly. Two types of BN sheets have been used, with and without defects, to investigate the role of defects in heterostructure properties. It has been found that the defects increase the ultraviolet radiation A (UVA) absorbance and enhance the photocatalytic response of the film. The BN sheets are optically transparent and do not exhibit any photocatalytic property but contribute to anatase crystallization via heterogeneous nucleation.

Biaxial compressive strain engineering in graphene/boron nitride heterostructures.

Project description:Strain engineered graphene has been predicted to show many interesting physics and device applications. Here we study biaxial compressive strain in graphene/hexagonal boron nitride heterostructures after thermal cycling to high temperatures likely due to their thermal expansion coefficient mismatch. The appearance of sub-micron self-supporting bubbles indicates that the strain is spatially inhomogeneous. Finite element modeling suggests that the strain is concentrated on the edges with regular nano-scale wrinkles, which could be a playground for strain engineering in graphene. Raman spectroscopy and mapping is employed to quantitatively probe the magnitude and distribution of strain. From the temperature-dependent shifts of Raman G and 2D peaks, we estimate the TEC of graphene from room temperature to above 1000K for the first time.

Extremely large magnetoresistance in few-layer graphene/boron-nitride heterostructures.

Project description:Understanding magnetoresistance, the change in electrical resistance under an external magnetic field, at the atomic level is of great interest both fundamentally and technologically. Graphene and other two-dimensional layered materials provide an unprecedented opportunity to explore magnetoresistance at its nascent stage of structural formation. Here we report an extremely large local magnetoresistance of ∼2,000% at 400 K and a non-local magnetoresistance of >90,000% in an applied magnetic field of 9 T at 300 K in few-layer graphene/boron-nitride heterostructures. The local magnetoresistance is understood to arise from large differential transport parameters, such as the carrier mobility, across various layers of few-layer graphene upon a normal magnetic field, whereas the non-local magnetoresistance is due to the magnetic field induced Ettingshausen-Nernst effect. Non-local magnetoresistance suggests the possibility of a graphene-based gate tunable thermal switch. In addition, our results demonstrate that graphene heterostructures may be promising for magnetic field sensing applications.

Dynamic thin film mediated slicing of boron nitride nanotubes.

Project description:A method has been developed to slice boron nitride nanotubes BNNTs under continuous flow in a vortex fluidic device (VFD), along with a method to partially purify the as received BNNT containing material. The latter involves heating the BNNTs to 600 °C followed by dispersing in a 1 : 3 isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and water mixture at 100 °C. The VFD mediated slicing of the BNNTs comprises irradiating the rapidly rotating glass tube (20 mm OD) with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. Systematically exploring the operating parameter space of the VFD established slicing of ca. 200 μm long purified BNNTs down to 340 nm to 400 nm, in ca. 53% yield, in a 1 : 1 mixture of IPA and water, in the absence of reagents/harsh chemicals, at a flow rate of 0.45 mL min-1, a concentration of 0.1 mg mL-1 BNNTs and an 8.5k rpm rotational speed, with the pulsed laser operating at 1064 nm and 250 mJ per pulse.

Achieving Boron-Carbon-Nitrogen Heterostructures by Collision Fusion of Carbon Nanotubes and Boron Nitride Nanotubes.

Project description:Heterostructures may exhibit completely new physical properties that may be otherwise absent in their individual component materials. However, how to precisely grow or assemble desired complex heterostructures is still a significant challenge. In this work, the collision dynamics of a carbon nanotube and a boron nitride nanotube under different collision modes were investigated using the self-consistent-charge density-functional tight-binding molecular dynamics method. The energetic stability and electronic structures of the heterostructure after collision were calculated using the first-principles calculations. Five main collision outcomes are observed, that is, two nanotubes can (1) bounce back, (2) connect, (3) fuse into a defect-free BCN heteronanotube with a larger diameter, (4) form a heteronanoribbon of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride and (5) create serious damage after collision. It was found that both the BCN single-wall nanotube and the heteronanoribbon created by collision are the direct band-gap semiconductors with the band gaps of 0.808 eV and 0.544 eV, respectively. These results indicate that collision fusion is a viable method to create various complex heterostructures with new physical properties.

Spontaneous ssDNA stretching on graphene and hexagonal boron nitride in plane heterostructures.

Project description:Single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) molecules in solution typically form coiled structures, therefore stretching ssDNA is extremely crucial before applying any nanotechnology for ssDNA analysis. Recent advances in material fabrication enable the deployment of nanochannels to manipulate, stretch, sort and map double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) molecules, however nanochannels fail to stretch ssDNA molecules due to the ultra-short persistence length and the potential nonspecific-interaction-induced clogging. Given the significance of ssDNA stretching in genome analysis, here we report an ssDNA stretching platform: two dimensional in-plane heterostructure comprising graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), and show that ssDNA can be stretched on a h-BN nanostripe sandwiched between two adjacent graphene domains ("nanochannel"). We further show that with a biasing voltage the stretched ssDNA can be electrophoretically transported along the "nanochannel", allowing easy controls/manipulations. When being conveniently integrated with existing atomic resolution sensors, the heterostructure platform paves the way for sequencing DNA on a planar surface.

Enhanced optoelectronic performances of vertically aligned hexagonal boron nitride nanowalls-nanocrystalline diamond heterostructures.

Project description:Field electron emission (FEE) properties of vertically aligned hexagonal boron nitride nanowalls (hBNNWs) grown on Si have been markedly enhanced through the use of nitrogen doped nanocrystalline diamond (nNCD) films as an interlayer. The FEE properties of hBNNWs-nNCD heterostructures show a low turn-on field of 15.2 V/μm, a high FEE current density of 1.48 mA/cm(2) and life-time up to a period of 248 min. These values are far superior to those for hBNNWs grown on Si substrates without the nNCD interlayer, which have a turn-on field of 46.6 V/μm with 0.21 mA/cm(2) FEE current density and life-time of 27 min. Cross-sectional TEM investigation reveals that the utilization of the diamond interlayer circumvented the formation of amorphous boron nitride prior to the growth of hexagonal boron nitride. Moreover, incorporation of carbon in hBNNWs improves the conductivity of hBNNWs. Such a unique combination of materials results in efficient electron transport crossing nNCD-to-hBNNWs interface and inside the hBNNWs that results in enhanced field emission of electrons. The prospective application of these materials is manifested by plasma illumination measurements with lower threshold voltage (370 V) and longer life-time, authorizing the role of hBNNWs-nNCD heterostructures in the enhancement of electron emission.

Improving the Photocatalytic Activity of Mesoporous Titania Films through the Formation of WS2/TiO2 Nano-Heterostructures.

Project description:Heterostructures formed by anatase nanotitania and bidimensional semiconducting materials are expected to become the next-generation photocatalytic materials with an extended operating range and higher performances. The capability of fabricating optically transparent photocatalytic thin films is also a highly demanded technological issue, and increasing the performances of such devices would significantly impact several applications, from self-cleaning surfaces to photovoltaic systems. To improve the performances of such devices, WS2/TiO2 heterostructures obtained by incorporating two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides layers into titania mesoporous ordered thin films have been fabricated. The self-assembly process has been carefully controlled to avoid disruption of the order during film fabrication. WS2 nanosheets of different sizes have been exfoliated by sonication and incorporated in the mesoporous films via one-pot processing. The WS2 nanosheets result as well-dispersed within the titania anatase mesoporous film that retains a mesoporous ordered structure. An enhanced photocatalytic response due to an interparticle electron transfer effect has been observed. The structural characterization of the heterostructure has revealed a tight interplay between the matrix and nanosheets rather than a simple additive co-catalyst effect.

Ion-Selective Membrane-Coated Graphene-Hexagonal Boron Nitride Heterostructures for Field-Effect Ion Sensing.

Project description:An intrinsic ion sensitivity exceeding the Nernst-Boltzmann limit and an sp 2 -hybridized carbon structure make graphene a promising channel material for realizing ion-sensitive field-effect transistors with a stable solid-liquid interface under biased conditions in buffered salt solutions. Here, we examine the performance of graphene field-effect transistors coated with ion-selective membranes as a tool to selectively detect changes in concentrations of Ca2+, K+, and Na+ in individual salt solutions as well as in buffered Locke's solution. Both the shift in the Dirac point and transconductance could be measured as a function of ion concentration with repeatability exceeding 99.5% and reproducibility exceeding 98% over 60 days. However, an enhancement of selectivity, by about an order magnitude or more, was observed using transconductance as the indicator when compared to Dirac voltage, which is the only factor reported to date. Fabricating a hexagonal boron nitride multilayer between graphene and oxide further increased the ion sensitivity and selectivity of transconductance. These findings incite investigating ion sensitivity of transconductance in alternative architectures as well as urge the exploration of graphene transistor arrays for biomedical applications.

Negative differential resistance in boron nitride graphene heterostructures: physical mechanisms and size scaling analysis.

Project description:Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is drawing increasing attention as an insulator and substrate material to develop next generation graphene-based electronic devices. In this paper, we investigate the quantum transport in heterostructures consisting of a few atomic layers thick hBN film sandwiched between graphene nanoribbon electrodes. We show a gate-controllable vertical transistor exhibiting strong negative differential resistance (NDR) effect with multiple resonant peaks, which stay pronounced for various device dimensions. We find two distinct mechanisms that are responsible for NDR, depending on the gate and applied biases, in the same device. The origin of first mechanism is a Fabry-Pérot like interference and that of the second mechanism is an in-plane wave vector matching when the Dirac points of the electrodes align. The hBN layers can induce an asymmetry in the current-voltage characteristics which can be further modulated by an applied bias. We find that the electron-phonon scattering suppresses the first mechanism whereas the second mechanism remains relatively unaffected. We also show that the NDR features are tunable by varying device dimensions. The NDR feature with multiple resonant peaks, combined with ultrafast tunneling speed provides prospect for the graphene-hBN-graphene heterostructure in the high-performance electronics.

Temperature-triggered chemical switching growth of in-plane and vertically stacked graphene-boron nitride heterostructures.

Project description:In-plane and vertically stacked heterostructures of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN-G and G/h-BN, respectively) are both recent focuses of graphene research. However, targeted synthesis of either heterostructure remains a challenge. Here, via chemical vapour deposition and using benzoic acid precursor, we have achieved the selective growth of h-BN-G and G/h-BN through a temperature-triggered switching reaction. The perfect in-plane h-BN-G is characterized by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), showing atomically patched graphene and h-BN with typical zigzag edges. In contrast, the vertical alignment of G/h-BN is confirmed by unique lattice-mismatch-induced moiré patterns in high-resolution STM images, and two sets of aligned selected area electron diffraction spots, both suggesting a van der Waals epitaxial mechanism. The present work demonstrates the chemical designability of growth process for controlled synthesis of graphene and h-BN heterostructures. With practical scalability, high uniformity and quality, our approach will promote the development of graphene-based electronics and optoelectronics.
