The Effect of the Isomeric Chlorine Substitutions on the Honeycomb-Patterned Films of Poly(x-chlorostyrene)s/Polystyrene Blends and Copolymers via Static Breath Figure Technique.

ABSTRACT: Polymeric thin films patterned with honeycomb structures were prepared from poly(x-chlorostyrene) and statistical poly(x-chlorostyrene-co-styrene) copolymers by static breath figure method. Each polymeric sample was synthesized by free radical polymerization and its solution in tetrahydrofuran cast on glass wafers under 90% relative humidity (RH). The effect of the chorine substitution in the topography and conformational entropy was evaluated. The entropy of each sample was calculated by using Voronoi tessellation. The obtained results revealed that these materials could be a suitable toolbox to develop a honeycomb patterns with a wide range of pore sizes for a potential use in contact guidance induced culture.

Project description:Creatures in nature possess almost perfect structures and properties, and exhibit harmonization and unification between structure and function. Biomimetics, mimicking nature for engineering solutions, provides a model for the development of functional surfaces with special properties. Recently, honeycomb structure materials have attracted wide attention for both fundamental research and practical applications and have become an increasingly hot research topic. Though progress in the field of breath-figure formation has been reviewed, the advance in the fabrication materials of bio-inspired honeycomb structure films has not been discussed. Here we review the recent progress of honeycomb structure fabrication materials which were prepared by the breath-figure method. The application of breath figures for the generation of all kinds of honeycomb is discussed.

Controlled ATRP Synthesis of Novel Linear-Dendritic Block Copolymers and Their Directed Self-Assembly in Breath Figure Arrays.

Project description:Herein, we report the formation and characterization of novel amphiphilic linear-dendritic block copolymers (LDBCs) composed of hydrophilic dendritic poly(ether-ester), PEE, blocks and hydrophobic linear poly(styrene), PSt. The LDBCs are synthesized via controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiated by a PEE macroinitiator. The copolymers formed have narrow molecular mass distributions and are designated as LGn-PSt Mn, in which LG represents the PEE fragment, n denotes the generation of the dendron (n = 1⁻3), and Mn refers to the average molecular mass of the LDBC (Mn = 3.5⁻68 kDa). The obtained LDBCs are utilized to fabricate honeycomb films by a static "breath figure" (BF) technique. The copolymer composition strongly affects the film morphology. LDBCs bearing acetonide dendron end groups produce honeycomb films when the PEE fraction is lower than 20%. Pore uniformity increases as the PEE content decreases. For LDBCs with hydroxyl end groups, only the first generation LDBCs yield BF films, but with a significantly smaller pore size (0.23 μm vs. 1⁻2 μm, respectively). Although higher generation LDBCs with free hydroxyl end groups fail to generate honeycomb films by themselves, the use of a cosolvent or addition of homo PSt leads to BF films with a controllable pore size (3.7⁻0.42 μm), depending on the LDBC content. Palladium complexes within the two triazole groups in each of the dendron's branching moieties can also fine-tune the morphology of the BF films.

Polystyrene Chain Growth from Di-End-Functional Polyolefins for Polystyrene-Polyolefin-Polystyrene Block Copolymers.

Project description:Triblock copolymers of polystyrene (PS) and a polyolefin (PO), e.g., PS-block-poly(ethylene-co-1-butene)-block-PS (SEBS), are attractive materials for use as thermoplastic elastomers and are produced commercially by a two-step process that involves the costly hydrogenation of PS-block-polybutadiene-block-PS. We herein report a one-pot strategy for attaching PS chains to both ends of PO chains to construct PS-block-PO-block-PS directly from olefin and styrene monomers. Dialkylzinc compound containing styrene moieties ((CH₂=CHC₆H₄CH₂CH₂)₂Zn) was prepared, from which poly(ethylene-co-propylene) chains were grown via "coordinative chain transfer polymerization" using the pyridylaminohafnium catalyst to afford di-end functional PO chains functionalized with styrene and Zn moieties. Subsequently, PS chains were attached at both ends of the PO chains by introduction of styrene monomers in addition to the anionic initiator Me₃SiCH₂Li·(pmdeta) (pmdeta = pentamethyldiethylenetriamine). We found that the fraction of the extracted PS homopolymer was low (~20%) and that molecular weights were evidently increased after the styrene polymerization (ΔMn = 27⁻54 kDa). Transmission electron microscopy showed spherical and wormlike PS domains measuring several tens of nm segregated within the PO matrix. Optimal tensile properties were observed for the sample containing a propylene mole fraction of 0.25 and a styrene content of 33%. Finally, in the cyclic tensile test, the prepared copolymers exhibited thermoplastic elastomeric properties with no breakage up over 10 cycles, which is comparable to the behavior of commercial-grade SEBS.

Breath figure-derived porous semiconducting films for organic electronics.

Project description:Porous semiconductor film morphologies facilitate fluid diffusion and mass transport into the charge-carrying layers of diverse electronic devices. Here, we report the nature-inspired fabrication of several porous organic semiconductor-insulator blend films [semiconductor: P3HT (p-type polymer), C8BTBT (p-type small-molecule), and N2200 (n-type polymer); insulator: PS] by a breath figure patterning method and their broad and general applicability in organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), gas sensors, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), and chemically doped conducting films. Detailed morphological analysis of these films demonstrates formation of textured layers with uniform nanopores reaching the bottom substrate with an unchanged solid-state packing structure. Device data gathered with both porous and dense control semiconductor films demonstrate that the former films are efficient TFT semiconductors but with added advantage of enhanced sensitivity to gases (e.g., 48.2%/ppm for NO2 using P3HT/PS), faster switching speeds (4.7 s for P3HT/PS OECTs), and more efficient molecular doping (conductivity, 0.13 S/m for N2200/PS).

Single Polar Cell Trapping Based on the Breath Figure Method.

Project description:The ability to research individual cells is important for various biological studies. Currently reported biointerfaces for single-cell analysis can only trap individual cells in random morphologies. Cell polarity is a key factor in cellular functions, and the study of single-cell polarity can facilitate an understanding of cancer metastasis and stem-cell differentiation. For single polar cell trapping, anisotropic honeycomb-structured films were prepared. Elastic poly(1,2-butadiene) honeycomb films with ordered hexagonal pores were first prepared via the breath figure method. Subsequently, the films were subjected to mechanical stretching and fixed via photo-cross-linking under UV light irradiation. This stretched honeycomb structure was then transferred to a polystyrene surface. The resultant anisotropic porous films exhibited excellent capacity for single-cell trapping. Besides contributing to the physical spatial confinement of cells, the trapped single cells exhibited orientation in different polarities. The single polar cell array provided a novel platform for fundamental biological research.

Polystyrene Chain Growth Initiated from Dialkylzinc for Synthesis of Polyolefin-Polystyrene Block Copolymers.

Project description:Polyolefins (POs) are the most abundant polymers. However, synthesis of PO-based block copolymers has only rarely been achieved. We aimed to synthesize various PO-based block copolymers by coordinative chain transfer polymerization (CCTP) followed by anionic polymerization in one-pot via conversion of the CCTP product (polyolefinyl)2Zn to polyolefinyl-Li. The addition of 2 equiv t-BuLi to (1-octyl)2Zn (a model compound of (polyolefinyl)2Zn) and selective removal or decomposition of (tBu)2Zn by evacuation or heating at 130 °C afforded 1-octyl-Li. Attempts to convert (polyolefinyl)2Zn to polyolefinyl-Li were unsuccessful. However, polystyrene (PS) chains were efficiently grown from (polyolefinyl)2Zn; the addition of styrene monomers after treatment with t-BuLi and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDTA) in the presence of residual olefin monomers afforded PO-block-PSs. Organolithium species that might be generated in the pot of t-BuLi, PMDTA, and olefin monomers, i.e., [Me2NCH2CH2N(Me)CH2CH2N(Me)CH2Li, Me2NCH2CH2N(Me)Li·(PMDTA), pentylallyl-Li?(PMDTA)], as well as PhLi?(PMDTA), were screened as initiators to grow PS chains from (1-hexyl)2Zn, as well as from (polyolefinyl)2Zn. Pentylallyl-Li?(PMDTA) was the best initiator. The Mn values increased substantially after the styrene polymerization with some generation of homo-PSs (27-29%). The Mn values of the extracted homo-PS suggested that PS chains were grown mainly from polyolefinyl groups in [(polyolefinyl)2(pentylallyl)Zn]-[Li?(PMDTA)]+ formed by pentylallyl-Li?(PMDTA) acting onto (polyolefinyl)2Zn.

Continuous Production of Macroporous Films: an Alternative to Breath Figure Assembly.

Project description:Despite the need for sophisticated instrumentation, breath figure assembly (BFA) methods are restricted to produce macroporous films on a tiny scale so far. The current study narrates the fabrication of macroporous films in hollow fiber geometry which extends to adopt the method for continuous production of isoporous surfaces from commercially available low-priced polymer materials. The fabrication of the films in the hollow fiber geometry is carried out by a co-centric quadruple orifice spinneret through which four different liquids are co-extruded simultaneously: bore fluid (to fill the lumen of the fiber), support layer solution, glycerol, and an isoporous film forming solution through the outer most orifice. The extruded entities plunge into a coagulation bath after passing a definite air gap. The implementation of the concept of diffuse-in, droplet formation, and then condense-out behavior of glycerol in a co-extrusion method of hollow fiber spinning makes macroporous film formation possible in an interminable way sidestepping the use of breath figure assembly method. Moreover, the continuous film formation by the proposed mechanism is also authenticated in flat sheet geometry by employing two casting blades in a casting machine. The structure of the films is analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Epitaxy-Directed Self-Assembly of Copolymers and Polymer Blends.

Project description:Directed self-assembly of materials into patterned structures is of great importance since the performance of them depends remarkably on their multiscale hierarchical structures. Therefore, purposeful structural regulation at different length scales through crystallization engineering provides an opportunity to modify the properties of polymeric materials. Here, an epitaxy-directed self-assembly strategy for regulating the pattern structures including phase structure as well as crystal modification and orientation of each component for both copolymers and polymer blends is reported. Owing to the specific crystallography registration between the depositing crystalline polymers and the underlying crystalline substrate, not only order phase structure with controlled size at nanometer scale but also the crystal structure and chain orientation of each component within the separated phases for both copolymers and polymer blend systems can be precisely regulated.

The morphology and functions of articular chondrocytes on a honeycomb-patterned surface.

Project description:The present study investigated the potential of a novel micropatterned substrate for neocartilage formation. Articular chondrocytes were cultured on poly( ɛ-caprolactone) materials whose surfaces were either flat or honeycomb-patterned. The latter was prepared using a novel self-organization technique, while the former, was prepared by spin-coating. The chondrocytes attached and proliferated on both surfaces. On the honeycomb films, chondrocytes were found at the top surface and encased within the 10 μm pores. Meanwhile, chondrocytes on the spin-coated surface flattened out. Accumulation of DNA and keratin sulphate was comparatively higher on the honeycomb films within the first 7 days. At their respective peaks, DNA concentration increased on the honeycomb and flat surfaces by approximately 210% and 400% of their day 1 values, respectively. However, cultures on the flat surface took longer to peak. Extracellular Matrix (ECM) concentrations peaked at 900% and 320% increases for the honeycomb and flat cultures. Type II collagen was upregulated on the honeycomb and flat surfaces by as much as 28% and 25% of their day 1 values, while aggrecan was downregulated with time, by 3.4% and 7.4%. These initial results demonstrate the potential usefulness of honeycomb-based scaffolds during early cultures neocartilage and soft tissue engineering.

Electroconductive Composites from Polystyrene Block Copolymers and Cu-Alumina Filler.

Project description:Technological advancements and development of new materials may lead to the manufacture of sustainable energy-conducting devices used in the energy sector. This research attempts to fabricate novel electroconductive and mechanically stable nanocomposites via an electroless deposition (ELD) technique using electrically insulating materials. Metallic Cu is coated onto Al₂O₃ by ELD, and the prepared filler is then integrated (2-14 wt %) into a matrix of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene-graft-maleic anhydride (PS-b-(PE-r-B)-b-PS-g-MA). Considerable variations in composite phases with filler inclusion exist. The Cu crystallite growth onto Al₂O₃ was evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) depicts a uniform Cu coating on Al₂O₃, while homogeneous filler dispersion is exhibited in the case of composites. The electrical behavior of composites is enhanced drastically (7.7 × 10-5 S/cm) upon incorporation of Cu-Al₂O₃ into an insulating polymer matrix (4.4 × 10-16 S/cm). Moreover, mechanical (Young's modulus, tensile strength and % elongation at break) and thermal (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)) properties of the nanocomposites also improve substantially. These composites are likely to meet the demands of modern high-strength electroconductive devices.
