cAMP is a universal second messenger regulating a plethora of processes in the kidney. Two downstream effectors of cAMP are PKA and exchange protein directly activated by cAMP (Epac), which, unlike PKA, is often linked to elevation of [Ca<sup>2+</sup>]<sub>i</sub>.
