Stereolithographic 3D printing of extrinsically self-healing composites.

ABSTRACT: We demonstrate for the first time the direct stereolithographic 3D printing of an extrinsically self-healing composite, comprised of commercial photocurable resin modified with anisole and PMMA-filled microcapsules. The composites demonstrate solvent-welding based autonomous self-healing to afford 87% recovery of the initial critical toughness. This work illustrates the potential of stereolithographic printing to fabricate self-healing composites with user-defined structures, avoiding the need for extensive rheological optimization of printing inks, like in direct-write 3D printing. Importantly, this work also demonstrates the inclusion of microcapsules into 3D printing resins to incorporate additional functionality into printed composites, which could be adapted for applications beyond self-healing materials.

Stereolithographic 3D Printing for Deterministic Control over Integration in Dual-Material Composites.

Project description:This work introduces a rapid and facile approach to predictably control integration between two materials with divergent properties. Programmed integration between photopolymerizable soft and stiff hydrogels was investigated for their promise in applications such as tissue engineering where heterogeneous properties are often desired. Spatial control afforded by grayscale 3D printing was leveraged to define regions at the interface that permit diffusive transport of a second material in-filled into the 3D printed part. The printing parameters (i.e., effective exposure dose) for the resin were correlated directly to mesh size to achieve controlled diffusion. Applying this information to grayscale exposures led to a range of distances over which integration was achieved with high fidelity. A prescribed finite distance of integration between soft and stiff hydrogels led to a 33% increase in strain to failure under tensile testing and eliminated failure at the interface. The feasibility of this approach was demonstrated in a layer-by-layer 3D printed part fabricated by stereolithography, which was subsequently infilled with a soft hydrogel containing osteoblastic cells. In summary, this approach holds promise for applications where integration of multiple materials and living cells is needed by allowing precise control over integration and reducing mechanical failure at contrasting material interfaces.

Plasmonic and Semiconductor Nanoparticles Interfere with Stereolithographic 3D Printing.

Project description:Two-photon polymerization stereolithographic three-dimensional (3D) printing is used for manufacturing a variety of structures ranging from microdevices to refractive optics. Incorporation of nanoparticles in 3D printing offers huge potential to create even more functional nanocomposite structures. However, this is difficult to achieve since the agglomeration of the nanoparticles can occur. Agglomeration not only leads to an uneven distribution of nanoparticles in the photoresin but also induces scattering of the excitation beam and altered absorption profiles due to interparticle coupling. Thus, it is crucial to ensure that the nanoparticles do not agglomerate during any stage of the process. To achieve noninteracting and well-dispersed nanoparticles on the 3D printing process, first, the stabilization of nanoparticles in the 3D printing resin is indispensable. We achieve this by functionalizing the nanoparticles with surface-bound ligands that are chemically similar to the photoresin that allows increased nanoparticle loadings without inducing agglomeration. By systematically studying the effect of different nanomaterials (Au nanoparticles, Ag nanoparticles, and CdSe/CdZnS nanoplatelets) in the resin on the 3D printing process, we observe that both, material-specific (absorption profiles) and unspecific (radical quenching at nanoparticle surfaces) pathways co-exist by which the photopolymerization procedure is altered. This can be exploited to increase the printing resolution leading to a reduction of the minimum feature size.

3D Printing Bioinspired Ceramic Composites.

Project description:Natural structural materials like bone and shell have complex, hierarchical architectures designed to control crack propagation and fracture. In modern composites there is a critical trade-off between strength and toughness. Natural structures provide blueprints to overcome this, however this approach introduces another trade-off between fine structural manipulation and manufacturing complex shapes in practical sizes and times. Here we show that robocasting can be used to build ceramic-based composite parts with a range of geometries, possessing microstructures unattainable by other production technologies. This is achieved by manipulating the rheology of ceramic pastes and the shear forces they experience during printing. To demonstrate the versatility of the approach we have fabricated highly mineralized composites with microscopic Bouligand structures that guide crack propagation and twisting in three dimensions, which we have followed using an original in-situ crack opening technique. In this way we can retain strength while enhancing toughness by using strategies taken from crustacean shells.

Stereolithographic 3D Printing-Based Hierarchically Cellular Lattices for High-Performance Quasi-Solid Supercapacitor.

Project description:3D printing-based supercapacitors have been extensively explored, yet the rigid rheological requirement for corresponding ink preparation significantly limits the manufacturing of true 3D architecture in achieving superior energy storage. We proposed the stereolithographic technique to fabricate the metallic composite lattices with octet-truss arrangement by using electroless plating and engineering the 3D hierarchically porous graphene onto the scaffolds to build the hierarchically cellular lattices in quasi-solid supercapacitor application. The supercapacitor device that is composed of composite lattices span several pore size orders from nm to mm holds promising behavior on the areal capacitance (57.75 mF cm-2), rate capability (70% retention, 2-40 mA cm-2), and long lifespan (96% after 5000 cycles), as well as superior energy density of 0.008 mWh cm-2, which are comparable to the state-of-the-art carbon-based supercapacitor. By synergistically combining this facile stereolithographic 3D printing technology with the hierarchically porous graphene architecture, we provide a novel route of manufacturing energy storage device as well as new insight into building other high-performance functional electronics.

Shear-thinning and self-healing hydrogels as injectable therapeutics and for 3D-printing.

Project description:The design of injectable hydrogel systems addresses the growing demand for minimally invasive approaches for local and sustained delivery of therapeutics. We developed a class of hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels that form through noncovalent guest-host interactions, undergo disassembly (shear-thinning) when injected through a syringe and then reassemble within seconds (self-healing) when shear forces are removed. Its unique properties enable the use of this hydrogel system for numerous applications, such as injection in vivo (including with cells and therapeutic molecules) or as a 'bioink' in 3D-printing applications. Here, we describe the functionalization of HA either with adamantanes (guest moieties) via controlled esterification or with β-cyclodextrins (host moieties) through amidation. We also describe how to modify the HA derivatives with methacrylates for secondary covalent cross-linking and for reaction with fluorophores for in vitro and in vivo imaging. HA polymers are rationally designed from relatively low-molecular-weight starting materials, with the degree of modification controlled, and have matched guest-to-host stoichiometry, allowing the preparation of hydrogels with tailored properties. This procedure takes 3-4 weeks to complete. We detail the preparation and characterization of the guest-host hydrogels, including assessment of their rheological properties, erosion and biomolecule release in vitro. We furthermore demonstrate how to encapsulate cells in vitro and provide procedures for quantitative assessment of in vivo hydrogel degradation by imaging of fluorescently derivatized materials.

3D Printing of Polysaccharide-Based Self-Healing Hydrogel Reinforced with Alginate for Secondary Cross-Linking.

Project description:Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has been attractive for tissue and organ regeneration with the possibility of constructing biologically functional structures useful in many biomedical applications. Autonomous healing of hydrogels composed of oxidized hyaluronate (OHA), glycol chitosan (GC), and adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH) was achieved after damage. Interestingly, the addition of alginate (ALG) to the OHA/GC/ADH self-healing hydrogels was useful for the dual cross-linking system, which enhanced the structural stability of the gels without the loss of their self-healing capability. Various characteristics of OHA/GC/ADH/ALG hydrogels, including viscoelastic properties, cytotoxicity, and 3D printability, were investigated. Additionally, potential applications of 3D bioprinting of OHA/GC/ADH/ALG hydrogels for cartilage regeneration were investigated in vitro. This hydrogel system may have potential for bioprinting of a custom-made scaffold in various tissue engineering applications.

Rotational 3D printing of damage-tolerant composites with programmable mechanics.

Project description:Natural composites exhibit exceptional mechanical performance that often arises from complex fiber arrangements within continuous matrices. Inspired by these natural systems, we developed a rotational 3D printing method that enables spatially controlled orientation of short fibers in polymer matrices solely by varying the nozzle rotation speed relative to the printing speed. Using this method, we fabricated carbon fiber-epoxy composites composed of volume elements (voxels) with programmably defined fiber arrangements, including adjacent regions with orthogonally and helically oriented fibers that lead to nonuniform strain and failure as well as those with purely helical fiber orientations akin to natural composites that exhibit enhanced damage tolerance. Our approach broadens the design, microstructural complexity, and performance space for fiber-reinforced composites through site-specific optimization of their fiber orientation, strain, failure, and damage tolerance.

Multimaterial Microfluidic 3D Printing of Textured Composites with Liquid Inclusions.

Project description:3D printing with a high degree of spatial and compositional precision could open new avenues to the design and fabrication of functional composites. By combining the direct ink writing and microfluidics, a multimaterial 3D printing system for fabricating textured composites with liquid inclusions of programmable spatial distribution and compositions is reported here. Phase diagrams for the rational selection of desired printing parameters are determined through a combination of simple theoretical analysis and experimental studies. 1D, 2D, and 3D structures programmed with desired inclusion patterns and compositions are fabricated. Moreover, the versatility of this 3D printing framework in fabricating layered composite beams of tunable thermal property and self-healing materials is demonstrated. The proposed multimaterial microfluidic 3D printing framework could be broadly applicable for structural composites and soft robotic devices.

3D Printing of a Self-Healing Thermoplastic Polyurethane through FDM: From Polymer Slab to Mechanical Assessment.

Project description:The use of self-healing (SH) polymers to make 3D-printed polymeric parts offers the potential to increase the quality of 3D-printed parts and to increase their durability and damage tolerance due to their (on-demand) dynamic nature. Nevertheless, 3D-printing of such dynamic polymers is not a straightforward process due to their polymer architecture and rheological complexity and the limited quantities produced at lab-scale. This limits the exploration of the full potential of self-healing polymers. In this paper, we present the complete process for fused deposition modelling of a room temperature self-healing polyurethane. Starting from the synthesis and polymer slab manufacturing, we processed the polymer into a continuous filament and 3D printed parts. For the characterization of the 3D printed parts, we used a compression cut test, which proved useful when limited amount of material is available. The test was able to quasi-quantitatively assess both bulk and 3D printed samples and their self-healing behavior. The mechanical and healing behavior of the 3D printed self-healing polyurethane was highly similar to that of the bulk SH polymer. This indicates that the self-healing property of the polymer was retained even after multiple processing steps and printing. Compared to a commercial 3D-printing thermoplastic polyurethane, the self-healing polymer displayed a smaller mechanical dependency on the printing conditions with the added value of healing cuts at room temperature.

Stereolithography 3D Printing of Lignin-Reinforced Composites with Enhanced Mechanical Properties.

Project description:Due to the availability, biodegradability, and biological effects, lignin has emerged as an interesting alternative to petroleum-based compounds for developing sustainable chemicals, materials, and composites. In this study, lignin at various concentrations was incorporated into methacrylate resin via solution blending to fabricate lignin-reinforced composites using stereolithography apparatus three-dimensional printing. Softwood kraft lignin in the amounts of 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.8, and 1.0 wt % in the methacrylate resin was used as a printing ink, and the gel contents and relative contents of the residual resin in the printed samples with various lignin concentrations were measured. The effects of the lignin on the ultimate mechanical properties of the non-postcured and postcured printed composites were determined. The tensile testing results revealed that the incorporation of lignin in the composite increased the tensile strength by 46-64% and Young's modulus by 13-37% for the postcured printed composites compared with that of the control sample (no lignin added). Employing a 0.4 wt % softwood kraft lignin, the tensile strength of the postcured printed composite reached the highest value of 49.0 MPa, which was a 60% increase in comparison to that of the control sample with 30.7 MPa. Scanning electron microscopy images of the fracture samples illustrated that the lignin-incorporated composites exhibited a rougher fracture surface that can presumably dissipate the stress, which could be a contributing factor for the mechanical enhancement.
