Redescription of the forgotten New Caledonian weevil genus Callistomorphus Perroud, 1865 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Eugnomini) with descriptions of eight new species.

ABSTRACT: Callistomorphus is one of the "forgotten" genera of the tribe Eugnomini inhabiting rain forest in New Caledonia. In this paper, the genus Callistomorphus and the type species C.farinosus are redescribed. Eight new species, Callistomorphusfundatus sp. n., C.gibbus sp. n., C.malleus sp. n., C.minimus sp. n., C.rutai sp. n., C.szoltysi sp. n., C.torosus sp. n. and C.turbidus sp. n., are described, originating from the main island of New Caledonia. Illustrations and SEM photographs of the external morphology and the male and female terminalia are provided, as well as dorsal habitus colour photographs of the adults, a key to the species, a distribution map, and a discussion of the systematic position of Callistomorphus within the tribe.

Project description:This study describes a new species, Crossotarsus beaveri Lai & Wang, sp. nov., designates a new combination, C. brevis (Browne, 1975, comb. nov. from Platypus Herbst, 1793), and notes a new record, C. emorsus Beeson, 1937, from China. Genetic data from four genes indicate that the new species and C. brevis form a clade clustered with other Crossotarsus species. Molecular phylogeny and morphological characters support their taxonomic placement.

Austromonticola, a new genus of broad-nosed weevil (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae) from montane areas of New Zealand.

Project description:Austromonticolagen. n. is proposed for a group of eight New Zealand alpine broad-nosed weevil species, all of which are here described: A. atriariussp. n. (type locality: Umbrella Mountains, Central Otago), A. caelibatussp. n. (type locality: Ohau Range, Mackenzie), A. furcatussp. n. (type locality: Old Man Range, Central Otago), A. inflatussp. n. (type locality: Hawkdun Range, Central Otago), A. planulatussp. n. (type locality: St Marys Range, Central Otago), A. postinventussp. n. (type locality: Kirkliston Range, South Canterbury), A. mataurasp. n. (type locality: Mt Dick, Otago Lakes) and A. rotundussp. n. (type locality: Old Man Range, Central Otago). All species occur exclusively above 1000 m elevation in the mountains of Central Otago and South Canterbury in the South Island. A phylogeny of the genus, including six outgroups, was inferred from 33 morphological characters. It resolved the genus as monophyletic, and revealed two strongly supported clades within Austromonticola. DNA sequences of four gene regions were obtained from five species. Of these, the 3' end of COI proved to be the most suitable for the identification of specimens. Females of all species have diagnostic secondary sexual structures on the elytra and ventrites. These structures are hypothesised to have evolved to assist with oviposition in and beside cushion plants or by selection for structures to mitigate the costs to females of prolonged mating.

Optimising Vine Weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus F. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Monitoring Tool Design.

Project description:Vine weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus F. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an economically important insect pest of horticultural crops. To identify an effective and reliable monitoring system for adult vine weevil, this study investigated the influence of colour, height and entrance position on the efficacy of a model monitoring tool using modified paper cups as refuges. Vine weevil preferences were determined by the number of individuals recorded within a refuge. When provided with a binary choice between black or white refuges, vine weevil adults showed a preference for black refuges. Vine weevils provided with a range of coloured refuges (blue, green, red and yellow) in addition to black and white refuges showed a preference for black and blue over the other colours and white refuges in group choice experiments. Refuge height and entrance position also influenced vine weevil behaviour with individuals exhibiting a preference for taller refuges and those with entrance openings around the refuge base. These results provide insights into refuge selection by adult vine weevils, which can be exploited to improve monitoring tool design. The importance of developing an effective monitoring tool for vine weevil adults as part of an integrated pest management programme is discussed.

Project description:In this study, ten species of Sphenoraia Clack, 1865 are recognized and re-described: Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) anjiensis Yang & Li, 1998, Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) berberii Jiang, 1992, Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) duvivieri (Laboissière, 1925), Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) haizhuensis Yang, 2021, Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) micans (Fairmaire, 1888), Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) nebulosa (Gyllenhal, 1808), Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) nigromaculata Jiang, 1992, Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) punctipennis Jiang, 1992, Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) rutilans (Hope, 1831), and Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) yajiangensis Jiang, 1992. Two new species, Sphenoraia (Sphenoraia) decemmaculata Feng, Yang & Liu, sp. nov. and Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) flavomarginata Feng, Yang & Li, sp. nov., are described. Additionally, Sphenoraia (Sphenoraia) cupreata Jacoby, 1890 and Sphenoraia (Sphenoraia) nigra Wang, Li & Yang, 2000 are transferred from Sphenoraia to Gallerucida. A key to the 12 Chinese species of Sphenoraia is given.

T.pomberimbensis sp. nov., T.pompangeensis sp. nov., T.puspoi sp. nov., T.rosichoni sp. nov., T.rubidus sp. nov., T.sarinoi sp. nov., T.sutrisnoi sp. nov., T.tanah sp. nov., T.tejokusumoi sp. nov., T.toboliensis sp. nov., T.tolitoliensis sp. nov., T.tounaensis sp. nov., T.unyil sp. nov. This fills important areas of distribution and brings the number of Trigonopterus species recorded from Sulawesi to 132.

Project description:Species of the genus Pseudocneorhinus occurring in or near China are reviewed, with description of five new species, Pseudocneorhinusangustus sp. nov., P.glaber sp. nov., P.hlavaci sp. nov., P.obliquehumeralis sp. nov., and P.setosicallus sp. nov. from the provinces of Beijing, Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, and Zhejiang. They are illustrated and compared with similar species, and a key is provided to all presently known species of the genus. Lectotypes of the following species are designated: Callirhopalussubcallosus Voss, 1956 [current name Pseudocneorhinussubcallosus (Voss, 1956)] and P.squamosus Marshall, 1934. Pseudocneorhinussquameus Morimoto, 2015 is confirmed for the fauna of China.

Delimiting species, revealing cryptic diversity in Molytinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) weevil through DNA barcoding.

Project description:The subfamily Molytinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), being the second largest group within the family Curculionidae, exhibits a diverse range of hosts and poses a serious threat to agricultural and forestry industries. We used 1,290 cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) barcodes to assess the efficiency of COI barcodes in species differentiation and uncover cryptic species diversity within weevils of Molytinae. The average Kimura 2-parameter distances within species, genus, and subfamily were 2.90%, 11.0%, and 22.26%, respectively, indicating significant genetic differentiation at both levels. Moreover, there exists a considerable degree of overlap between intraspecific (0%-27.50%) and interspecific genetic distances (GDs; 0%-39.30%). The application of Automatic barcode gap discovery, Assemble Species by Automatic Partitioning, Barcode Index Number, Poisson Tree Processes (PTP), Bayesian Poisson Tree Processes (bPTP), and jMOTU resulted in the identification of 279, 275, 494, 322, 320, and 279 molecular operational taxonomic units, respectively. The integration of 6 methods successfully delimited species of Molytinae in 86.6% of all examined morphospecies, surpassing a threshold value of 3% GD (73.0%). A total of 28 morphospecies exhibiting significant intraspecific divergences were assigned to multiple MOTUs, respectively, suggesting the presence of cryptic diversity or population divergence. The identification of cryptic species within certain morphological species in this study necessitates further investigation through comprehensive taxonomic practices in the future.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the olive weevil, Dyscerus cribripennis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Project description:The olive weevil Dyscerus cribripennis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is an uncontrollable noxious insect to Olea europaea. The 15,977 bp complete mitochondrial genome of D. cribripennis contained 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), 21 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and a control region (GenBank accession number MW023069). The trnI was not found in the D. cribripennis mitogenome. The phylogenetic analysis based on mitogenomes showed that D. cribripennis is closed related with Hylobitelus xiaoi.

Insight into weevil biology from a reference quality genome of the boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Project description:The boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman, is one of the most historically impactful insects due to its near destruction of the US cotton industry in the early 20th century. Contemporary efforts to manage this insect primarily use pheromone baited traps for detection and organophosphate insecticides for control, but this strategy is not sustainable due to financial and environmental costs. We present a high-quality boll weevil genome assembly, consisting of 306 scaffolds with approximately 24,000 annotated genes, as a first step in the identification of gene targets for novel pest control. Gene content and transposable element distribution are similar to those found in other Curculionidae genomes; however, this is the most contiguous and only assembly reported to date for a member in the species-rich genus Anthonomus. Transcriptome profiles across larval, pupal, and adult life stages led to identification of several genes and gene families that could present targets for novel control strategies.
