A new species, a new combination, and a new record of Crossotarsus Chapuis, 1865 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Platypodinae) from China.

ABSTRACT: This study describes a new species, Crossotarsus beaveri Lai & Wang, sp. nov., designates a new combination, C. brevis (Browne, 1975, comb. nov. from Platypus Herbst, 1793), and notes a new record, C. emorsus Beeson, 1937, from China. Genetic data from four genes indicate that the new species and C. brevis form a clade clustered with other Crossotarsus species. Molecular phylogeny and morphological characters support their taxonomic placement.

Project description:Previous descriptions of adult Austroplatypus incompertus (Schedl) are completed by the addition of descriptions and illustrations of the adults and, in particular, their maxillary palps. I describe and illustrate the non-adult phases of the life cycle and provide a key to the larval instars. The sexual dimorphism of Austroplatypus incompertus is atypical and includes a latitudinal cline which obeys Bergmann's rule. The taxonomic position of the genus within the Platypodinae is clarified. Platypus incostatus Schedl is recognised as the male of the species, and hence a new synonym of Austroplatypus incompertus.

Project description:Callistomorphus is one of the "forgotten" genera of the tribe Eugnomini inhabiting rain forest in New Caledonia. In this paper, the genus Callistomorphus and the type species C.farinosus are redescribed. Eight new species, Callistomorphusfundatus sp. n., C.gibbus sp. n., C.malleus sp. n., C.minimus sp. n., C.rutai sp. n., C.szoltysi sp. n., C.torosus sp. n. and C.turbidus sp. n., are described, originating from the main island of New Caledonia. Illustrations and SEM photographs of the external morphology and the male and female terminalia are provided, as well as dorsal habitus colour photographs of the adults, a key to the species, a distribution map, and a discussion of the systematic position of Callistomorphus within the tribe.

Project description:This protocol describes the different methods to collect and preserve bark and ambrosia beetles, detailing collecting tools, recording relevant data, and optimizing step-by-step methods to extract beetles from twigs, branches, bark, and trunks. It elaborates on trapping techniques, tools, lures, baits, and beetle preservation. The main rule of manual collecting is to not attempt to pry the insect out of the wood or bark, but instead, remove the wood/bark away from the beetle: gently and systematically. The main rule of trapping is that there is no general attractant; instead, attractants and traps should reflect the ecology of the targeted beetle taxa.

Project description:A new weevil, Pheudepunctatus gen. et sp. n., of the tribe Dryotribini in Cossoninae, is described from Guangdong Province, South China. It differs from the related genera Dryotribus Horn and Microtribodes Morimoto in having antennae with seven articles and a distinct scutellum, and from Ochronanus Pascoe and Stenomimus Wollaston in having long antennae, a rostrum with a medio-longitudinal furrow beginning at the posterior margin of the eyes and extending approximately midway on the rostrum, and a moderately elevated, medio-longitudinal carina extending the full length of the pronotum. Other diagnostic characters and illustrations are provided. A key to the genera of Dryotribini known from China is given.

Project description:The genus Omophorus Schoenherr, 1835 is recorded for the first time from the Oriental Region and a new subgenus and species, Omophorus (Sinomophorus subgen. n.) rongshusp. n. is described from Yunnan province (P.R. China). The new subgenus differs from the subgenus Omophorus by the longer antennal club, the bifid vestiture of the ventral parts, the elongate subtrapezoidal scutellum, the very small size of sclerotizations in the endophallus, the absence of styli in the ovipositor and the absence of the spiculum ventrale on the VIII female sternite, and from the subgenus Pangomophorus Voss, 1960 by the developed metatibial uncus and the lack of a subhumeral tubercle. A detailed description and figures are provided to allow interpretation of characters in ongoing phylogenetic analyses.

Project description:Species of the genus Pseudocneorhinus occurring in or near China are reviewed, with description of five new species, Pseudocneorhinusangustus sp. nov., P.glaber sp. nov., P.hlavaci sp. nov., P.obliquehumeralis sp. nov., and P.setosicallus sp. nov. from the provinces of Beijing, Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, and Zhejiang. They are illustrated and compared with similar species, and a key is provided to all presently known species of the genus. Lectotypes of the following species are designated: Callirhopalussubcallosus Voss, 1956 [current name Pseudocneorhinussubcallosus (Voss, 1956)] and P.squamosus Marshall, 1934. Pseudocneorhinussquameus Morimoto, 2015 is confirmed for the fauna of China.

Five new species of Triotemnus (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae) from Morocco and Yemen.

Project description:Fivenew species of the genus Triotemnus from Morocco and Yemen are described. Triotemnus is a new genus of Scolytinae for the Yemen region. External morphology of the new species and all morphologically related species of the genus were studied. While the new species from Morocco are morphologically similar to the known species from the corresponding region, all three newly described species from Yemen, mainly two of them living in Socotra, are morphologically very different from all other known species of the genus. Geographical distribution and the probability of endemicity are discussed.
