Response Styles in the Partial Credit Model.

ABSTRACT: In the modeling of ordinal responses in psychological measurement and survey-based research, response styles that represent specific answering patterns of respondents are typically ignored. One consequence is that estimates of item parameters can be poor and considerably biased. The focus here is on the modeling of a tendency to extreme or middle categories. An extension of the partial credit model is proposed that explicitly accounts for this specific response style. In contrast to existing approaches, which are based on finite mixtures, explicit person-specific response style parameters are introduced. The resulting model can be estimated within the framework of generalized mixed linear models. It is shown that estimates can be seriously biased if the response style is ignored. In applications, it is demonstrated that a tendency to extreme or middle categories is not uncommon. A software tool is developed that makes the model easy to apply.

Online Calibration of Polytomous Items Under the Generalized Partial Credit Model.

Project description:Online calibration is a technology-enhanced architecture for item calibration in computerized adaptive tests (CATs). Many CATs are administered continuously over a long term and rely on large item banks. To ensure test validity, these item banks need to be frequently replenished with new items, and these new items need to be pretested before being used operationally. Online calibration dynamically embeds pretest items in operational tests and calibrates their parameters as response data are gradually obtained through the continuous test administration. This study extends existing formulas, procedures, and algorithms for dichotomous item response theory models to the generalized partial credit model, a popular model for items scored in more than two categories. A simulation study was conducted to investigate the developed algorithms and procedures under a variety of conditions, including two estimation algorithms, three pretest item selection methods, three seeding locations, two numbers of score categories, and three calibration sample sizes. Results demonstrated acceptable estimation accuracy of the two estimation algorithms in some of the simulated conditions. A variety of findings were also revealed for the interacted effects of included factors, and recommendations were made respectively.

Asymptotic Standard Errors of Generalized Partial Credit Model True Score Equating Using Characteristic Curve Methods.

Project description:In this study, the delta method was applied to estimate the standard errors of the true score equating when using the characteristic curve methods with the generalized partial credit model in test equating under the context of the common-item nonequivalent groups equating design. Simulation studies were further conducted to compare the performance of the delta method with that of the bootstrap method and the multiple imputation method. The results indicated that the standard errors produced by the delta method were very close to the criterion empirical standard errors as well as those yielded by the bootstrap method and the multiple imputation method under all the manipulated conditions.

A General Unfolding IRT Model for Multiple Response Styles.

Project description:It is commonly known that respondents exhibit different response styles when responding to Likert-type items. For example, some respondents tend to select the extreme categories (e.g., strongly disagree and strongly agree), whereas some tend to select the middle categories (e.g., disagree, neutral, and agree). Furthermore, some respondents tend to disagree with every item (e.g., strongly disagree and disagree), whereas others tend to agree with every item (e.g., agree and strongly agree). In such cases, fitting standard unfolding item response theory (IRT) models that assume no response style will yield a poor fit and biased parameter estimates. Although there have been attempts to develop dominance IRT models to accommodate the various response styles, such models are usually restricted to a specific response style and cannot be used for unfolding data. In this study, a general unfolding IRT model is proposed that can be combined with a softmax function to accommodate various response styles via scoring functions. The parameters of the new model can be estimated using Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms. An empirical data set is used for demonstration purposes, followed by simulation studies to assess the parameter recovery of the new model, as well as the consequences of ignoring the impact of response styles on parameter estimators by fitting standard unfolding IRT models. The results suggest the new model to exhibit good parameter recovery and seriously biased estimates when the response styles are ignored.

What Affects the Quality of Score Transformations? Potential Issues in True-Score Equating Using the Partial Credit Model.

Project description:This simulation study investigated to what extent departures from construct similarity as well as differences in the difficulty and targeting of scales impact the score transformation when scales are equated by means of concurrent calibration using the partial credit model with a common person design. Practical implications of the simulation results are discussed with a focus on scale equating in health-related research settings. The study simulated data for two scales, varying the number of items and the sample sizes. The factor correlation between scales was used to operationalize construct similarity. Targeting of the scales was operationalized through increasing departure from equal difficulty and by varying the dispersion of the item and person parameters in each scale. The results show that low similarity between scales goes along with lower transformation precision. In cases with equal levels of similarity, precision improves in settings where the range of the item parameters is encompassing the person parameters range. With decreasing similarity, score transformation precision benefits more from good targeting. Difficulty shifts up to two logits somewhat increased the estimation bias but without affecting the transformation precision. The observed robustness against difficulty shifts supports the advantage of applying a true-score equating methods over identity equating, which was used as a naive baseline method for comparison. Finally, larger sample size did not improve the transformation precision in this study, longer scales improved only marginally the quality of the equating. The insights from the simulation study are used in a real-data example.

Rural micro-credit model design and credit risk assessment via improved LSTM algorithm.

Project description:Rural microcredit plays an important role in promoting rural economic development and increasing farmers' income. However, traditional credit risk assessment models may have insufficient adaptability in rural areas. This study is based on the improved Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm using self organizing method, aiming to design an optimized evaluation model for rural microcredit risk. The improved LSTM algorithm can better capture the long-term dependence between the borrower's historical behavior and risk factors with its advantages in sequential data modeling. The experimental results show that the rural microcredit risk assessment model based on the self organizing LSTM algorithm has higher accuracy and stability compared to traditional models, and can effectively control credit default risk, providing more comprehensive risk management support for financial institutions. In addition, the model also has real-time monitoring and warning functions, which helps financial institutions adjust their decisions in a timely manner and reduce credit losses. The practical application of this study is expected to promote the stable development of rural economy and the advancement of financial technology. However, future work needs to further validate the practical application effectiveness and interpretability of the model, taking into account the special circumstances of different rural areas, in order to achieve sustainable application of the model in the rural microcredit market.

Retrospective model-based inference guides model-free credit assignment.

Project description:An extensive reinforcement learning literature shows that organisms assign credit efficiently, even under conditions of state uncertainty. However, little is known about credit-assignment when state uncertainty is subsequently resolved. Here, we address this problem within the framework of an interaction between model-free (MF) and model-based (MB) control systems. We present and support experimentally a theory of MB retrospective-inference. Within this framework, a MB system resolves uncertainty that prevailed when actions were taken thus guiding an MF credit-assignment. Using a task in which there was initial uncertainty about the lotteries that were chosen, we found that when participants' momentary uncertainty about which lottery had generated an outcome was resolved by provision of subsequent information, participants preferentially assigned credit within a MF system to the lottery they retrospectively inferred was responsible for this outcome. These findings extend our knowledge about the range of MB functions and the scope of system interactions.

Estimation of Response Styles Using the Multidimensional Nominal Response Model: A Tutorial and Comparison With Sum Scores.

Project description:Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in item response models for measuring response styles on Likert-type items. These model-based approaches stand in contrast to traditional sum-score-based methods where researchers count the number of times that participants selected certain response options. The multidimensional nominal response model (MNRM) offers a flexible model-based approach that may be intuitive to those familiar with sum score approaches. This paper presents a tutorial on the model along with code for estimating it using three different software packages: flexMIRT®, mirt, and Mplus. We focus on specification and interpretation of response functions. In addition, we provide analytical details on how sum score to scale score conversion can be done with the MNRM. In the context of a real data example, three different scoring approaches are then compared. This example illustrates how sum-score-based approaches can sometimes yield scores that are confounded with substantive content. We expect that the current paper will facilitate further investigations as to whether different substantive conclusions are reached under alternative approaches to measuring response styles.

Dopamine enhances model-free credit assignment through boosting of retrospective model-based inference.

Project description:Dopamine is implicated in representing model-free (MF) reward prediction errors a as well as influencing model-based (MB) credit assignment and choice. Putative cooperative interactions between MB and MF systems include a guidance of MF credit assignment by MB inference. Here, we used a double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subjects design to test an hypothesis that enhancing dopamine levels boosts the guidance of MF credit assignment by MB inference. In line with this, we found that levodopa enhanced guidance of MF credit assignment by MB inference, without impacting MF and MB influences directly. This drug effect correlated negatively with a dopamine-dependent change in purely MB credit assignment, possibly reflecting a trade-off between these two MB components of behavioural control. Our findings of a dopamine boost in MB inference guidance of MF learning highlight a novel DA influence on MB-MF cooperative interactions.

Using multidimensional item response theory to evaluate how response styles impact measurement.

Project description:Multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) models for response style (e.g., Bolt, Lu, & Kim, 2014, Psychological Methods, 19, 528; Falk & Cai, 2016, Psychological Methods, 21, 328) provide flexibility in accommodating various response styles, but often present difficulty in isolating the effects of response style(s) from the intended substantive trait(s). In the presence of such measurement limitations, we consider several ways in which MIRT models are nevertheless useful in lending insight into how response styles may interfere with measurement for a given test instrument. Such a study can also inform whether alternative design considerations (e.g., anchoring vignettes, self-report items of heterogeneous content) that seek to control for response style effects may be helpful. We illustrate several aspects of an MIRT approach using real and simulated analyses.

Constrained Dual Scaling for Detecting Response Styles in Categorical Data.

Project description:Dual scaling (DS) is a multivariate exploratory method equivalent to correspondence analysis when analysing contingency tables. However, for the analysis of rating data, different proposals appear in the DS and correspondence analysis literature. It is shown here that a peculiarity of the DS method can be exploited to detect differences in response styles. Response styles occur when respondents use rating scales differently for reasons not related to the questions, often biasing results. A spline-based constrained version of DS is devised which can detect the presence of four prominent types of response styles, and is extended to allow for multiple response styles. An alternating nonnegative least squares algorithm is devised for estimating the parameters. The new method is appraised both by simulation studies and an empirical application.
