Bioinspired mechanical device generates plasma in water via cavitation.

ABSTRACT: Nature can generate plasma in liquids more efficiently than human-designed devices using electricity, acoustics, or light. In the animal world, snapping shrimp can induce cavitation that collapses to produce high pressures and temperatures, leading to efficient plasma formation with photon and shock wave emission via energy focusing. Here, we report a bioinspired mechanical device that mimics the plasma generation technique of the snapping shrimp. This device was manufactured using additive manufacturing based on micro-x-ray computed tomography of a snapping shrimp claw molt. A spring fixture was designed to reliably actuate the claw with appropriate force and velocity to produce a high-speed water jet that matches the cavitation number and Reynolds number of the shrimp. Light emission and shocks were imaged, which indicate that our device reproduces the shrimp's plasma generation technique and is more efficient than other plasma generation methods.

A Note on Enhancing Aeration via a Vortex-Based Cavitation Device.

Project description:There is growing interest in generating micro- or nanobubbles for enhancing aeration. Small bubbles not only enhance the interfacial area for gas-liquid mass transfer but also may enhance the equilibrium solubility if the size of the bubbles is small enough. In this note, we demonstrate the use of a vortex-based hydrodynamic cavitation device (VD) for generating small bubbles and enhancing aeration. Experimental results for conventional aeration and aeration with VD operated under three different conditions are presented. A reference case of potential degassing because of the low pressure generated in the cavitation device was also investigated. Experiments were carried out in a bubble column using DI water as the liquid phase. The dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was measured using a precalibrated dissolved oxygen probe. Measurements of transient profiles of dissolved gas concentrations were carried out under different operating conditions. A generalized framework to analyze mass transfer in the presence of degassing, absorption, and desorption (via top surface or large bubbles) is developed and used for interpreting the experimental data. The per-pass degassing factor of VD was found to increase with the power dissipation [∝ (P-P c)0.4, where P is power dissipation and P c is the critical power beyond which degassing starts]. The aeration generated by VD was found to realize 30% higher DO concentration beyond the equilibrium solubility at atmospheric conditions. The bubble sizes estimated from the steady-state DO concentration were in the range from 80 to 200 μm for the operating parameters considered in this work. The presented results demonstrate the effectiveness of VD for enhancing aeration and will be useful for intensifying gas-liquid processes.

Acoustic cavitation generates molecular mercury(ii) hydroxide, Hg(OH)<sub>2</sub>, from biphasic water/mercury mixtures.

Project description:Emulsification of elemental mercury in aqueous solution in the form of grey particles occurs upon exposure to intense sound fields. We show the concomitant formation of molecular Hg(OH)2 in the solution phase reaching a saturation limit of 0.24 mM at 25 °C. The formation of Hg(OH)2 is consistent with the 'hot spot' model which suggests the formation of OH˙ as a result of acoustic cavitation; such radicals are proposed to combine with Hg to form the Hg(OH)2 species here characterised using voltammetry.

High-yield atmospheric water capture via bioinspired material segregation.

Project description:Transforming atmospheric water vapor into liquid form can be a way to supply water to arid regions for uses such as drinking water, thermal management, and hydrogen generation. Many current methods rely on solid sorbents that cycle between capture and release at slow rates. We envision a radically different approach where water is transformed and directly captured into a liquid salt solution that is suitable for subsequent distillation or other processing using existing methods. In contrast to other methods utilizing hydrogels as sorbents, we do not store water within hydrogels-we use them as a transport medium. Inspired by nature, we capture atmospheric water through a hydrogel membrane "skin" at an extraordinarily high rate of 5.50 kgm[Formula: see text]d[Formula: see text] at a low humidity of 35%. and up to 16.9 kgm[Formula: see text]d[Formula: see text] at higher humidities. For a drinking-water application, calculated performance of a hypothetical one-square-meter device shows that water could be supplied to two to three people in arid environments. This work is a significant step toward providing new resources and possibilities to water-scarce regions.

Bioinspired Materials for Water Purification.

Project description:Water scarcity issues associated with inadequate access to clean water and sanitation is a ubiquitous problem occurring globally. Addressing future challenges will require a combination of new technological development in water purification and environmental remediation technology with suitable conservation policies. In this scenario, new bioinspired materials will play a pivotal role in the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly solutions. The role of amphiphilic self-assembly on the fabrication of new biomimetic membranes for membrane separation like reverse osmosis is emphasized. Mesoporous support materials for semiconductor growth in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants and new carriers for immobilization of bacteria in bioreactors are used in the removal and processing of different kind of water pollutants like heavy metals. Obstacles to improve and optimize the fabrication as well as a better understanding of their performance in small-scale and pilot purification systems need to be addressed. However, it is expected that these new biomimetic materials will find their way into the current water purification technologies to improve their purification/removal performance in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way.

Bioinspired mechanical mineralization of organogels.

Project description:Mineralization is a long-lasting method commonly used by biological materials to selectively strengthen in response to site specific mechanical stress. Achieving a similar form of toughening in synthetic polymer composites remains challenging. In previous work, we developed methods to promote chemical reactions via the piezoelectrochemical effect with mechanical responses of inorganic, ZnO nanoparticles. Herein, we report a distinct example of a mechanically-mediated reaction in which the spherical ZnO nanoparticles react themselves leading to the formation of microrods composed of a Zn/S mineral inside an organogel. The microrods can be used to selectively create mineral deposits within the material resulting in the strengthening of the overall resulting composite.

A flexible cystoscopy device prototype for mechanical tissue ablation based on micro-scale hydrodynamic cavitation: Ex vivo and in vivo studies.

Project description:Minimally invasive methods were sought for faster recovery from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and lower urinary tract (LUTS) symptoms. For this, the search for effective, low-side-effect methods for tissue ablation, particularly for managing BPH and certain bladder pathologies, has been continued to advance. In this regard, the energy released during the formation of hydrodynamic cavitation bubbles offers an alternative treatment method. In this study, we present the feasibility of the use of hydrodynamic cavitation with a flexible cystoscopy device prototype designed for the treatment of LUTS-related diseases. The developed flexible cystoscopy device prototype allows easy access to the urinary bladder through urethra with minimal pain, demonstrating its suitability as a minimally invasive approach. Precisely targeted cavitation exposure prevents prostatic capsule and bladder perforation. Moreover, an automatic actuating mechanism supports steering for real-time visual feedback. The developed device prototype was first tested on an ex vivo human bladder and then on an in vivo porcine bladder. Histopathological analyses were performed after both species were tested. For both analyses, significant tissue ablation at the targets was observed upon exposure to cavitating flows. Finally, the temperature profile on the device was obtained using a thermal camera. Accordingly, it was observed that the temperature increase during the procedure was not significant. The developed device prototype can thus realize mechanical ablation-based therapy, avoids unintended heat deposition which might appear in laser ablation and leads to fewer side effects such as uncontrolled tissue damage and low target area effectiveness that might occur in minimally invasive tissue ablation methods.

Water cavitation from ambient to high temperatures.

Project description:Predicting cavitation has proved a formidable task, particularly for water. Despite the experimental difficulty of controlling the sample purity, there is nowadays substantial consensus on the remarkable tensile strength of water, on the order of -120 MPa at ambient conditions. Recent progress significantly advanced our predictive capability which, however, still considerably depends on elaborate fitting procedures based on the input of external data. Here a self-contained model is discussed which is shown able to accurately reproduce cavitation data for water over the most extended range of temperatures for which accurate experiments are available. The computations are based on a diffuse interface model which, as only inputs, requires a reliable equation of state for the bulk free energy and the interfacial tension. A rare event technique, namely the string method, is used to evaluate the free-energy barrier as the base for determining the nucleation rate and the cavitation pressure. The data allow discussing the role of the Tolman length in determining the nucleation barrier, confirming that, when the size of the cavitation nuclei exceed the thickness of the interfacial layer, the Tolman correction effectively improves the predictions of the plain Classical Nucleation Theory.

Bioinspired Breathable Architecture for Water Harvesting.

Project description:Thuja plicata is a coniferous tree which displays remarkable water channelling properties. In this article, an easily fabricated mesh inspired by the hierarchical macro surface structure of Thuja plicata branchlets is described which emulates this efficient water collection behaviour. The key parameters are shown to be the pore size, pore angle, mesh rotation, tilt angle (branch droop) and layering (branch overlap). Envisaged societal applications include water harvesting and low cost breathable architecture for developing countries.

Bioinspired Reductionistic Peptide Engineering for Exceptional Mechanical Properties.

Project description:A simple solution-processing and self-assembly approach that exploits the synergistic interactions between multiple hydrogen bonded networks and aromatic interactions was utilized to synthesize molecular crystals of cyclic dipeptides (CDPs), whose molecular weights (~0.2 kDa) are nearly three orders of magnitude smaller than that of natural structural proteins (50-300 kDa). Mechanical properties of these materials, measured using the nanoindentation technique, indicate that the stiffness and strength are comparable and sometimes better than those of natural fibres. The measured mechanical responses were rationalized by recourse to the crystallographic structural analysis and intermolecular interactions in the self-assembled single crystals. With this work we highlight the significance of developing small molecule based bioinspired design strategies to emulate biomechanical properties. A particular advantage of the successfully demonstrated reductionistic strategy of the present work is its amenability for realistic industrial scale manufacturing of designer biomaterials with desired mechanical properties.

Bioinspired actuators with intrinsic muscle-like mechanical properties.

Project description:Humans and animals can achieve agile and efficient movements because the muscle can operate in different modes depending on its intrinsic mechanical properties. For bioinspired robotics and prosthetics, it is highly desirable to have artificial actuators with muscle-like properties. However, it still remains a challenge to realize both intrinsic muscle-like force-velocity and force-length properties in one single actuator simultaneously. This study presents a bioinspired soft actuator, named HimiSK (highly imitating skeletal muscle), designed by spatially arranging a set of synergistically contractile units in a flexible matrix similar to skeletal musculature. We have demonstrated that the actuator presents both intrinsic force-velocity and force-length characteristics that are very close to biological muscle with inherent self-stability and robustness in response to external perturbations. These outstanding properties result from the bioinspired architecture and the adaptive morphing of the flexible matrix material, which adapts automatically to mechanically diverse tasks without reliance on sensors and controllers.
