Genome Sequences of 20 Georeferenced Aspergillus flavus Isolates.

ABSTRACT: Several agricultural commodities can be infected by Aspergillus flavus, a fungus that can produce the carcinogen aflatoxin. Here, we report the whole-genome sequences for 20 georeferenced isolates collected from soil and corn under field conditions. This information contributes to an understanding of A. flavus population structure and dynamics in a field environment.

Project description:Nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica strains are major foodborne pathogens with global public health importance. Foodborne salmonellosis can be life-threatening, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. We report the complete genome sequences of 20 nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica strains isolated in Rwanda. The reported 20 bacterial chromosomes and 8 plasmids each belong to 1 of 9 nontyphoidal Salmonella serotypes.

Project description:Aflatoxin is a carcinogenic contaminant of many commodities that are infected by Aspergillus flavus Nonaflatoxigenic strains of A. flavus have been utilized as biological control agents. Here, we report the genome sequences from three biocontrol strains. This information will be useful in developing markers for postrelease monitoring of these fungi.

Atypical Aspergillus flavus isolates associated with chronic azole therapy.

Project description:A case of chronic sinus disease due to morphologically atypical Aspergillus flavus is described. Multiple fungal isolates sporulated poorly or not at all, displaying unusual color and microscopic morphology, including the absence of typical vesicles and phialides, which caused the isolates to resemble several other fungal genera superficially. The patient received multiple antifungal therapies over at least 10 years with various azole drugs, including voriconazole, itraconazole, and posaconazole. We speculate that this lengthy exposure to azole antifungal drugs may have caused or promoted the atypical morphology seen in these isolates.
