Optics-less focusing of XUV high-order harmonics.

ABSTRACT: By experimentally studying high-order harmonic beams generated in gases, we show how the spatial characteristics of these ultrashort extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) beams can be finely controlled when a single fundamental beam generates harmonics in a thin gas medium. We demonstrate that these XUV beams can be emitted as converging beams and thereby get focused after generation. We study this optics-less focusing using a spatially chirped beam that acts as a probe located inside the harmonic generation medium. We analyze the XUV beam evolution with an analytical model and obtain very good agreement with experimental measurements. The XUV foci sizes and positions vary strongly with the harmonic order, and the XUV waist can be located at arbitrarily large distances from the generating medium. We discuss how intense XUV fields can be obtained with optics-less focusing and how the order-dependent XUV beam characteristics are compatible with broadband XUV irradiation and attosecond science.

Polarization shaping of high-order harmonics in laser-aligned molecules.

Project description:The present work reports on the generation of short-pulse coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation of controlled polarization. The proposed strategy is based on high-order harmonics generated in pre-aligned molecules. Field-free molecular alignment produced by a short linearly-polarized infrared laser pulse is used to break the isotropy of a gas medium. Driving the aligned molecules by a circularly-polarized infrared pulse allows to transfer the anisotropy of the medium to the polarization of the generated harmonic light. The ellipticity of the latter is controlled by adjusting the angular distribution of the molecules at the time they interact with the driving pulse. Extreme ultraviolet radiation produced with high degree of ellipticity (close to circular) is demonstrated.

Generating high-order optical and spin harmonics from ferromagnetic monolayers.

Project description:High-order harmonic generation (HHG) in solids has entered a new phase of intensive research, with envisioned band-structure mapping on an ultrashort time scale. This partly benefits from a flurry of new HHG materials discovered, but so far has missed an important group. HHG in magnetic materials should have profound impact on future magnetic storage technology advances. Here we introduce and demonstrate HHG in ferromagnetic monolayers. We find that HHG carries spin information and sensitively depends on the relativistic spin-orbit coupling; and if they are dispersed into the crystal momentum k space, harmonics originating from real transitions can be k-resolved and carry the band structure information. Geometrically, the HHG signal is sensitive to spatial orientations of monolayers. Different from the optical counterpart, the spin HHG, though probably weak, only appears at even orders, a consequence of SU(2) symmetry. Our findings open an unexplored frontier-magneto-high-order harmonic generation.

Spectral interferometry with waveform-dependent relativistic high-order harmonics from plasma surfaces.

Project description:The interaction of ultra-intense laser pulses with matter opened the way to generate the shortest light pulses available nowadays in the attosecond regime. Ionized solid surfaces, also called plasma mirrors, are promising tools to enhance the potential of attosecond sources in terms of photon energy, photon number and duration especially at relativistic laser intensities. Although the production of isolated attosecond pulses and the understanding of the underlying interactions represent a fundamental step towards the realization of such sources, these are challenging and have not yet been demonstrated. Here, we present laser-waveform-dependent high-order harmonic radiation in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range supporting well-isolated attosecond pulses, and utilize spectral interferometry to understand its relativistic generation mechanism. This unique interpretation of the measured spectra provides access to unrevealed temporal and spatial properties such as spectral phase difference between attosecond pulses and field-driven plasma surface motion during the process.

Efficient high-order harmonic generation boosted by below-threshold harmonics.

Project description:High-order harmonic generation (HHG) in gases has been established as an important technique for the generation of coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses at ultrashort time scales. Its main drawback, however, is the low conversion efficiency, setting limits for many applications, such as ultrafast coherent imaging, nonlinear processes in the XUV range, or seeded free electron lasers. Here we introduce a novel scheme based on using below-threshold harmonics, generated in a "seeding cell", to boost the HHG process in a "generation cell", placed further downstream in the focused laser beam. By modifying the fundamental driving field, these low-order harmonics alter the ionization step of the nonlinear HHG process. Our dual-cell scheme enhances the conversion efficiency of HHG, opening the path for the realization of robust intense attosecond XUV sources.

Opening a new route to multiport coherent XUV sources via intracavity high-order harmonic generation.

Project description:High-order harmonic generation (HHG) is currently utilized for developing compact table-top radiation sources to provide highly coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and soft X-ray pulses; however, the low repetition rate of fundamental lasers, which is typically in the multi-kHz range, restricts the area of application for such HHG-based radiation sources. Here, we demonstrate a novel method for realizing a MHz-repetition-rate coherent XUV light source by utilizing intracavity HHG in a mode-locked oscillator with an Yb:YAG thin disk laser medium and a 100-m-long ring cavity. We have successfully implemented HHG by introducing two different rare gases into two separate foci and picking up each HH beam. Owing to the two different HH beams generated from one cavity, this XUV light source will open a new route to performing a time-resolved measurement with an XUV-pump and XUV-probe scheme at a MHz-repetition rate with a femtosecond resolution.

Monitoring ultrafast vibrational dynamics of isotopic molecules with frequency modulation of high-order harmonics.

Project description:Molecules constituted by different isotopes are different in vibrational modes, making it possible to elucidate the mechanism of a chemical reaction via the kinetic isotope effect. However, the real-time observation of the vibrational motion of isotopic nuclei in molecules is still challenging due to its ultrashort time scale. Here we demonstrate a method to monitor the nuclear vibration of isotopic molecules with the frequency modulation of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) during the laser-molecule interaction. In the proof-of-principle experiment, we report a red shift in HHG from H2 and D2. The red shift is ascribed to dominant HHG from the stretched isotopic molecules at the trailing edge of the laser pulse. By utilizing the observed frequency shift, the laser-driven nuclear vibrations of H2 and D2 are retrieved. These findings pave an accessible route toward monitoring the ultrafast nuclear dynamics and even tracing a chemical reaction in real time.

High-fluence and high-gain multilayer focusing optics to enhance spatial resolution in femtosecond X-ray laser imaging.

Project description:With the emergence of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs), coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) has acquired a capability for single-particle imaging (SPI) of non-crystalline objects under non-cryogenic conditions. However, the single-shot spatial resolution is limited to ~5 nanometres primarily because of insufficient fluence. Here, we present a CDI technique whereby high resolution is achieved with very-high-fluence X-ray focusing using multilayer mirrors with nanometre precision. The optics can focus 4-keV XFEL down to 60 nm × 110 nm and realize a fluence of >3 × 105 J cm-2 pulse-1 or >4 × 1012 photons μm-2 pulse-1 with a tenfold increase in the total gain compared to conventional optics due to the high demagnification. Further, the imaging of fixed-target metallic nanoparticles in solution attained an unprecedented 2-nm resolution in single-XFEL-pulse exposure. These findings can further expand the capabilities of SPI to explore the relationships between dynamic structures and functions of native biomolecular complexes.

Inertial focusing cytometer with integrated optics for particle characterization.

Project description:Microfluidic inertial focusing has been shown as a simple and effective method to localize cells and particles within a flow cell for interrogation by an external optical system. To enable portable point of care optical cytometry, however, requires a reduction in the complexity of the large optical systems that are used in standard flow cytometers. Here, we present a new design that incorporates optical waveguides and focusing elements with an inertial focusing flow cell to make a compact robust cytometer capable of enumerating and discriminating beads, cells, and platelets.

Modifying angular and polarization selection rules of high-order harmonics by controlling electron trajectories in k-space.

Project description:Recent advances in generation of strong laser pulses have enabled the acceleration of electrons in solids into regions far away from the band edge. Because nonlinear currents can be generated by laser-driven carriers in the non-parabolic region, tailored laser fields may allow control of optical properties of high-order harmonics (HHs). So far, investigations on laser-induced nonlinear optical phenomena have focused on the simple electron motion induced by linearly or elliptically polarized fields. However, more complex trajectories can be important for development of novel optoelectronic devices. Here, we show that a weak laser field (optical frequency is ω2) applied in a direction orthogonal to a strong main field (ω1) enhances certain HH intensity components of bulk GaSe by a factor of 100. Good agreement between the experiments and calculations shows that manipulation of the electron trajectory allows breaking inversion symmetry of the electronic states felt by the accelerated electrons and leading to a modification of selection rules for frequency-mixing processes of HHs. Owing to our usage of non-integer multiples for ω1 and ω2, it is found that the generation of HHs constitutes a novel way of ultrafast control of light polarization and optical switching.

High-order harmonics measured by the photon statistics of the infrared driving-field exiting the atomic medium.

Project description:High-order harmonics in the extreme-ultraviolet spectral range, resulting from the strong-field laser-atom interaction, have been used in a broad range of fascinating applications in all states of matter. In the majority of these studies the harmonic generation process is described using semi-classical theories which treat the electromagnetic field of the driving laser pulse classically without taking into account its quantum nature. In addition, for the measurement of the generated harmonics, all the experiments require diagnostics in the extreme-ultraviolet spectral region. Here by treating the driving laser field quantum mechanically we reveal the quantum-optical nature of the high-order harmonic generation process by measuring the photon number distribution of the infrared light exiting the harmonic generation medium. It is found that the high-order harmonics are imprinted in the photon number distribution of the infrared light and can be recorded without the need of a spectrometer in the extreme-ultraviolet.
