ABSTRACT: Experimental data presented in this paper include the flow measurements through cylindrical orifices and the discharge behavior of Mechanical Choked Orifice Plate, MCOP. The data information consists of detailed physical shapes of the devices as well as their application in pressurized networks. From the hydraulic point of view, discharge measurements with their associated differential pressures are presented. The data analyses are presented in "An Experimental study on a flow control device applicable in pressurized networks" Rezazadeh et al., 2019.

Flow dynamic assessment of native mitral valve, mitral valve repair and mitral valve replacement using vector flow mapping intracardiac flow dynamic in mitral valve regurgitation

Project description:Objectives The present study aims to assess and describe the intracardiac blood flow dynamic in patients with mitral regurgitation (MR), repaired mitral valves (MV) and mitral valve prostheses using vector flow mapping (VFM). Methods Patients with different MV pathologies and MV disease treatments were analysed. All patients underwent 2D transthoracic echocardiography, and images for flow visualization were acquired in VFM mode in an apical three-chamber view and four-chamber view. Vectors and vortices were qualitatively analyzed. Results thirty-two (32) patients underwent 2D transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) with VFM analysis. We evaluated intracardiac flow dynamics in 3 healthy subjects, 10 patients with MR (5 degenerative, 5 functional), 4 patients who underwent MV repair, 5 who underwent MV replacement (3 biological, 2 mechanical), 2 surgically implanted transcatheter heart valve (THV), 2 transcatheter edge-to-edge MV repair with MitraClip (TEER), 3 transcatheter MV replacement (TMVR) and 3 transapical off-pump MV repair with NeoChord implantation. Blood flow patterns are significantly altered in patients with MV disease and MV repair compared to control patients. MV repair is superior to replacement in restoring more physiologicalpatterns, while TMVR reproducesan intraventricular flowcloser to normal than surgical MVR and TEER. Conclusions Intracardiac flow patterns can be clearly defined using VFM. Restoration of a physiological blood flow pattern inside the LV directly depends on the procedure used to address MV disease.

3D printed microfluidic valve on PCB for flow control applications using liquid metal.

Project description:Direct 3D printing of active microfluidic elements on PCB substrates enables high-speed fabrication of stand-alone microdevices for a variety of health and energy applications. Microvalves are key components of microfluidic devices and liquid metal (LM) microvalves exhibit promising flow control in microsystems integrated with PCBs. In this paper, we demonstrate LM microvalves directly 3D printed on PCB using advanced digital light processing (DLP). Electrodes on PCB are coated by carbon ink to prevent alloying between gallium-based LM plug and copper electrodes. We used DLP 3D printers with in-house developed acrylic-based resins, Isobornyl Acrylate, and Diurethane Dimethacrylate (DUDMA) and functionalized PCB surface with acrylic-based resin for strong bonding. Valving seats are printed in a 3D caterpillar geometry with chamber diameter of 700 µm. We successfully printed channels and nozzles down to 90 µm. Aiming for microvalves for low-power applications, we applied square-wave voltage of 2 Vpp at a range of frequencies between 5 to 35 Hz. The results show precise control of the bistable valving mechanism based on electrochemical actuation of LMs.

CFD and experimental data of closed-loop wind tunnel flow.

Project description:The data presented in this article were the basis for the study reported in the research articles entitled 'A validated design methodology for a closed loop subsonic wind tunnel' (Calautit et al., 2014) [1], which presented a systematic investigation into the design, simulation and analysis of flow parameters in a wind tunnel using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The authors evaluated the accuracy of replicating the flow characteristics for which the wind tunnel was designed using numerical simulation. Here, we detail the numerical and experimental set-up for the analysis of the closed-loop subsonic wind tunnel with an empty test section.

Aortic sinus flow stasis likely in valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

Project description:OBJECTIVE:Valve-in-valve procedures using transcatheter aortic valves are increasingly performed to treat degenerated bioprosthetic surgical aortic valves because they are less invasive than redo aortic valve replacement. The objective of this study is to quantify the changes in aortic sinus blood flow dynamics before and after a valve-in-valve procedure to gain insight into mechanisms for clinical and subclinical thrombosis of leaflets. METHODS:A detailed description of the sinus hemodynamics for valve-in-valve implantation was performed in vitro. A Medtronic Hancock II (Medtronic Inc, Minneapolis, Minn) porcine bioprosthesis was modeled as a surgical aortic valve, and Medtronic CoreValve and Edwards Sapien (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, Calif) valves were used as the transcatheter aortic valves. High-resolution particle image velocimetry was used to compare the flow patterns from these 2 valves within both the left coronary and noncoronary sinuses in vitro. RESULTS:Velocity and vorticity within the surgical valve sinuses reached peak values of 0.7 m/s and 1000 s-1, with a 70% decrease in peak fluid shear stress near the aortic side of the leaflet in the noncoronary sinus. With the introduction of transcatheter aortic valves, peak velocity and vorticity were reduced to approximately 0.4 m/s and 550 s-1 and 0.58 m/s and 653 s-1 without coronary flow and 0.60 m/s and 631 s-1 and 0.81 m/s and 669 s-1 with coronary flow for the CoreValve and Sapien valve-in-valve implantations, respectively. Peak shear stress was approximately 38% higher along the aortic side of the coronary versus noncoronary transcatheter aortic valve leaflet. CONCLUSIONS:Decreased flow and shear stress in valve-in-valve procedures indicate a higher risk of leaflet thrombosis secondary to flow stasis, perhaps more so in the noncoronary sinus.

Light-responsive and corrosion-resistant gas valve with non-thermal effective liquid-gating positional flow control.

Project description:Safe and precise control of gas flow is one of the key factors to many physical and chemical processes, such as degassing, natural gas transportation, and gas sensor. In practical application, it is essential for the gas-involved physicochemical process to keep everything under control and safe, which significantly relies on the controllability, safety, and stability of their valves. Here we show a light-responsive and corrosion-resistant gas valve with non-thermal effective liquid-gating positional flow control under a constant pressure by incorporating dynamic gating liquid with light responsiveness of solid porous substrate. Our experimental and theoretical analysis reveal that the photoisomerization of azobenzene-based molecular photoswitches on the porous substrate enabled the gas valve to possess a light-responsive and reversible variation of substantial critical pressure of non-thermal effective gas flow switch. Moreover, the chemically inert gating liquid prevented the solid substrate from corrosion and, by combining with the high spatiotemporal resolution of light, the gas valve realizes a precisely positional open and close under a steady-state pressure. The application demonstrations in our results show the potentials of the new gas valve for bringing opportunities to many applications, such as gas-involved reaction control in microfluidics, soft actuators, and beyond.

Bicuspid aortic valve morphology and aortic valvular outflow jets: an experimental analysis using an MRI-compatible pulsatile flow circulation system.

Project description:The characteristics of aortic valvular outflow jet affect aortopathy in the bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). This study aimed to elucidate the effects of BAV morphology on the aortic valvular outflow jets. Morphotype-specific valve-devising apparatuses were developed to create aortic valve models. A magnetic resonance imaging-compatible pulsatile flow circulation system was developed to quantify the outflow jet. The eccentricity and circulation values of the peak systolic jet were compared among tricuspid aortic valve (TAV), three asymmetric BAVs, and two symmetric BAVs. The results showed mean aortic flow and leakage did not differ among the five BAVs (six samples, each). Asymmetric BAVs demonstrated the eccentric outflow jets directed to the aortic wall facing the smaller leaflets. In the asymmetric BAV with the smaller leaflet facing the right-anterior, left-posterior, and left-anterior quadrants of the aorta, the outflow jets exclusively impinged on the outer curvature of the ascending aorta, proximal arch, and the supra-valvular aortic wall, respectively. Symmetric BAVs demonstrated mildly eccentric outflow jets that did not impinge on the aortic wall. The circulation values at peak systole increased in asymmetric BAVs. The bicuspid symmetry and the position of smaller leaflet were determinant factors of the characteristics of aortic valvular outflow jet.

Adaptive control of a soft pneumatic actuator using experimental characterization data.

Project description:Fiber reinforced soft pneumatic actuators are hard to control due to their non-linear behavior and non-uniformity introduced by the fabrication process. Model-based controllers generally have difficulty compensating non-uniform and non-linear material behaviors, whereas model-free approaches are harder to interpret and tune intuitively. In this study, we present the design, fabrication, characterization, and control of a fiber reinforced soft pneumatic module with an outer diameter size of 12 mm. Specifically, we utilized the characterization data to adaptively control the soft pneumatic actuator. From the measured characterization data, we fitted mapping functions between the actuator input pressures and the actuator space angles. These maps were used to construct the feedforward control signal and tune the feedback controller adaptively depending on the actuator bending configuration. The performance of the proposed control approach is experimentally validated by comparing the measured 2D tip orientation against the reference trajectory. The adaptive controller was able to successfully follow the prescribed trajectory with a mean absolute error of 0.68° for the magnitude of the bending angle and 3.5° for the bending phase around the axial direction. The data-driven control method introduced in this paper may offer a solution to intuitively tune and control soft pneumatic actuators, compensating for their non-uniform and non-linear behavior.

Brainstem control of cerebral blood flow and application to acute vasospasm following experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Project description:Symptomatic ischemia following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is common but poorly understood and inadequately treated. Severe constriction of the major arteries at the base of the brain, termed vasospasm, traditionally has been thought to be a proximal event underlying these ischemias, although microvascular changes also have been described. The vast majority of studies aimed at understanding the pathogenesis of ischemic deficits, and vasospasm have focused on the interaction of the "spasmogen" of the extravasated blood with the smooth muscle and endothelium of the arteries. This has led to a comparative neglect of the contribution of the CNS to the maintenance of cerebral perfusion. In the present study, we focused on the role of the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) in modulating cerebral perfusion at rest and following an experimental SAH in the rat. Changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) were measured using laser-Doppler flowmetry and three-dimensional optical microangiography. Focal application of a GABA(A) receptor agonist and antagonist was used to respectively inactivate and activate the RVM. We show here that the RVM modulates cerebral blood flow under resting conditions, and further, contributes to restoration of cerebral perfusion following a high-grade SAH. Failure of this brainstem compensatory mechanism could be significant for acute perfusion deficits seen in patients following subarachnoid hemorrhage.
