Nodal rings and drumhead surface states in phononic crystals.

ABSTRACT: Three-dimensional topological nodal lines, the touching curves of two bands in momentum space, which give rise to drumhead surface states, provide an opportunity to explore a variety of exotic phenomena. However, solid evidence for a flat drumhead surface state remains elusive. In this paper, we report a realization of three-dimensional nodal line dispersions and drumhead surface states in phononic crystal. Profiting from its macroscopic nature, the phononic crystal permits a flexible and accurate fabrication for materials with ring-like nodal lines and drumhead surface states. Phononic nodal rings of the lowest two bands and, more importantly, topological drumhead surface states are unambiguously demonstrated. Our system provides an ideal platform to explore the intriguing properties of acoustic waves endowed with extraordinary dispersions.

Ideal nodal rings of one-dimensional photonic crystals in the visible region.

Project description:Three-dimensional (3D) artificial metacrystals host rich topological phases, such as Weyl points, nodal rings, and 3D photonic topological insulators. These topological states enable a wide range of applications, including 3D robust waveguides, one-way fiber, and negative refraction of the surface wave. However, these carefully designed metacrystals are usually very complex, hindering their extension to nanoscale photonic systems. Here, we theoretically proposed and experimentally realized an ideal nodal ring in the visible region using a simple 1D photonic crystal. The π-Berry phase around the ring is manifested by a 2π reflection phase's winding and the resultant drumhead surface states. By breaking the inversion symmetry, the nodal ring can be gapped and the π-Berry phase would diffuse into a toroidal-shaped Berry flux, resulting in photonic ridge states (the 3D extension of quantum valley Hall states). Our results provide a simple and feasible platform for exploring 3D topological physics and its potential applications in nanophotonics.

Tuning electronic and phononic states with hidden order in disordered crystals.

Project description:Disorder in crystals is rarely random, and instead involves local correlations whose presence and nature are hidden from conventional crystallographic probes. This hidden order can sometimes be controlled, but its importance for physical properties of materials is not well understood. Using simple models for electronic and interatomic interactions, we show how crystals with identical average structures but different types of hidden order can have very different electronic and phononic band structures. Increasing the strength of local correlations within hidden-order states can open band gaps and tune mode (de)localisation-both mechanisms allowing for fundamental changes in physical properties without long-range symmetry breaking. Taken together, our results demonstrate how control over hidden order offers a new mechanism for tuning material properties, orthogonal to the conventional principles of (ordered) structure/property relationships.

Tacticity in chiral phononic crystals.

Project description:The study of vibrational properties in engineered periodic structures relies on the early intuitions of Haüy and Boscovich, who regarded crystals as ensembles of periodically arranged point masses interacting via attractive and repulsive forces. Contrary to electromagnetism, where mechanical properties do not couple to the wave propagation mechanism, in elasticity this paradigm inevitably leads to low stiffness and high-density materials. Recent works transcend the Haüy-Boscovich perception, proposing shaped atoms with finite size, which relaxes the link between their mass and inertia, to achieve unusual dynamic behavior at lower frequencies, leaving the stiffness unaltered. Here, we introduce the concept of tacticity in spin-spin-coupled chiral phononic crystals. This additional layer of architecture has a remarkable effect on their dispersive behavior and allows to successfully realize material variants with equal mass density and stiffness but radically different dynamic properties.

Pure Zirconium: Type II Nodal Line and Nodal Surface States.

Project description:Type II nodal line states have novel properties, such as direction-reliant chiral anomalies and high anisotropic negative magneto-resistance. These type II nodal line states have been widely investigated. Compared to nodal line materials, there are far fewer proposed nodal surface materials, and furthermore, a very recent challenge is to find a realistic material that co-exhibits both nodal line and nodal surface states. In this manuscript, we present the study of the electronic and topological states of pure zirconium within the density functional theory. We found that pure Zr is an interesting material that rarely exhibits both the type II nodal line state (in kz = 0 plane) and nodal surface state (in kz = π plane). The nontrivial topological states are explained based on the orbital-resolved band structures. Our study shows that pure Zr can serve as a new platform to investigate the interplay between the nodal line state and the nodal surface state.

Symmetry-enforced three-dimensional Dirac phononic crystals.

Project description:Dirac semimetals, the materials featuring fourfold degenerate Dirac points, are critical states of topologically distinct phases. Such gapless topological states have been accomplished by a band-inversion mechanism, in which the Dirac points can be annihilated pairwise by perturbations without changing the symmetry of the system. Here, we report an experimental observation of Dirac points that are enforced completely by the crystal symmetry using a nonsymmorphic three-dimensional phononic crystal. Intriguingly, our Dirac phononic crystal hosts four spiral topological surface states, in which the surface states of opposite helicities intersect gaplessly along certain momentum lines, as confirmed by additional surface measurements. The novel Dirac system may release new opportunities for studying elusive (pseudo) and offer a unique prototype platform for acoustic applications.

Dipole states and coherent interaction in surface-acoustic-wave coupled phononic resonators.

Project description:Manipulation of mechanical motion at the micro-scale has been attracting continuous attention, leading to the successful implementation of various strategies with potential impact on classical and quantum information processing. We propose an approach based on the interplay between a pair of localised mechanical resonators and travelling surface acoustic waves (SAW). We demonstrate the existence of a two-sided interaction, allowing the use of SAW to trigger and control the resonator oscillation, and to manipulate the elastic energy distribution on the substrate through resonator coupling. Observation of the vectorial structure of the resonator motion reveals the existence of two coupling regimes, a dipole-dipole-like interaction at small separation distance versus a surface-mediated mechanical coupling at larger separation. These results illustrate the potential of this platform for coherent control of mechanical vibration at a resonator level, and reciprocally for manipulating SAW propagation using sub-wavelength elements.

Surface potential-adjusted surface states in 3D topological photonic crystals.

Project description:Surface potential in a topological matter could unprecedentedly localize the waves. However, this surface potential is yet to be exploited in topological photonic systems. Here, we demonstrate that photonic surface states can be induced and controlled by the surface potential in a dielectric double gyroid (DG) photonic crystal. The basis translation in a unit cell enables tuning of the surface potential, which in turn regulates the degree of wave localization. The gradual modulation of DG photonic crystals enables the generation of a pseudomagnetic field. Overall, this study shows the interplay between surface potential and pseudomagnetic field regarding the surface states. The physical consequences outlined herein not only widen the scope of surface states in 3D photonic crystals but also highlight the importance of surface treatments in a photonic system.

3-D phononic crystals with ultra-wide band gaps.

Project description:In this paper gradient based topology optimization (TO) is used to discover 3-D phononic structures that exhibit ultra-wide normalized all-angle all-mode band gaps. The challenging computational task of repeated 3-D phononic band-structure evaluations is accomplished by a combination of a fast mixed variational eigenvalue solver and distributed Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) parallel computations. The TO algorithm utilizes the material distribution-based approach and a gradient-based optimizer. The design sensitivity for the mixed variational eigenvalue problem is derived using the adjoint method and is implemented through highly efficient vectorization techniques. We present optimized results for two-material simple cubic (SC), body centered cubic (BCC), and face centered cubic (FCC) crystal structures and show that in each of these cases different initial designs converge to single inclusion network topologies within their corresponding primitive cells. The optimized results show that large phononic stop bands for bulk wave propagation can be achieved at lower than close packed spherical configurations leading to lighter unit cells. For tungsten carbide - epoxy crystals we identify all angle all mode normalized stop bands exceeding 100%, which is larger than what is possible with only spherical inclusions.

Partitioned gradient-index phononic crystals for full phase control.

Project description:Gradient-index phononic crystals (GRIN-PC), characterized by layers with spatially changing refractive indices, have recently been investigated as part of the effort to realize flat lenses in acoustic and elastic regimes. Such gradient-index lens must be inversely designed from the corresponding refractive indices in order to manipulate the target wave. Unfortunately, estimating the index of this type of lens is not straightforward and requires substantial iterative computation in general, which greatly limits the applicability of GRIN-PC to flat lenses. In this work, we propose a novel design of a GRIN-PC in which neighboring layers are separated by partitions, thus preventing waves in each layer from interacting with other layers. This partitioned GRIN-PC design enables us readily to control the phase gradient accurately at the lens' end, resulting in direct calculation of indices for target wave manipulation. A detailed methodology for partitioned GRIN-PC based collimator and Bessel-beam generator is proposed and experimentally validated to confirm the versatile use of our design in wave engineering applications.

Stress Wave Isolation by Purely Mechanical Topological Phononic Crystals.

Project description:We present an active, purely mechanical stress wave isolator that consists of short cylindrical particles arranged in a helical architecture. This phononic structure allows us to change inter-particle stiffness dynamically by controlling the contact angles of the cylinders. We use torsional travelling waves to control the contact angles, thereby imposing a desired spatio-temporal stiffness variation to the phononic crystal along the longitudinal direction. Such torsional excitation is a form of parametric pumping in the system, which results in the breakage of the time-reversal symmetry. We report that, in quasi-static sense, the system shows topologically non-trivial band-gaps. However, in a dynamic regime where the pumping effect is significant, these band-gaps become asymmetric with respect to the frequency and wavenumber domains in the dispersion relationship. By using numerical simulations, we show that such asymmetry has a direct correspondence to the topological invariant, i.e., Chern number, of the system. We propose that this asymmetry, accompanied by selective inter-band transition, can be utilized for directional isolation of the stress wave propagating along the phononic crystal.
