Dataset on mechanical properties of damaged fibre composite laminates with drilled vent-holes for resin-injection repair procedure.

ABSTRACT: This dataset comprises the mechanical properties of pristine and barely visible impact damaged (BVID) carbon fibre reinforced epoxy composite (CFRP) laminates. The mechanical dataset describes the compressive strength, compressive strain at fracture, strain energy density for resilience and strain energy density to fracture of the CFRP laminates with different number of vent holes (namely 4, 5 and 6) in the respective pristine and BVID states. The vent holes were created in the laminate to facilitate the resin-injection repair process. The mechanical properties were determined from in-plane compression test of the CFRP laminates. Structure-related dataset, namely infrared thermographs and ultrasonic C-scan images of BVID and other damage features induced by mechanical drilling, are included for completeness.

Project description:AimThe aim of this study was to compare the fracture resistance levels of restored deciduous teeth and permanent molars restored with different materials, including ultra-polyethylene fibre tape (Ribbond-Ultra), fibre-reinforced resin composite EverX posterior, fibre-reinforced flowable resin composite EverX Flow and bulk-fill flow restorative material (Tetric N-flow) in the posterior region.MethodsWe tested sixty-four caries-free human mandibular molars (32 deciduous molars and 32 permanent molars). Deep and wide Class I cavities were prepared in each tooth. The teeth were embedded in poly(methyl methacrylate) resin up to the cementoenamel junction, leaving the crown completely exposed. Oral temperature fluctuations were then simulated using two thousand thermocycling cycles, each lasting 30 seconds in the hot phase (approximately 35 °C). The loading rate for our force-fracture tests was set at 0.5 mm/min. Direct restorations were made using a spherical tip and applying the force perpendicular to the sample surface. Visual inspection of the fractured specimens, in combination with adhesive scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and finite element analysis (FEA), provided detailed insights into the failure modes and stress distribution at the restoration-tooth interface.ResultsTeeth restored with fibre-reinforced composite (EverX Posterior) had the highest fracture resistance, followed by fibre-reinforced flowable resin composite (EverX Flow). Teeth restored with the ultra- polyethylene fibre tape (Ribbond-Ultra), followed by the flowable bulk-fill composite (Tetric N-flow) had the lowest resistance. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences between the groups, except for EverX Posterior and EverX Flow. A predictive algorithm was also proposed for the likelihood of restoration failure.ConclusionModern fibre-reinforced resin composites, such as EverX Posterior, effectively reinforce teeth against fractures, with success in both restored deciduous and permanent molars. Meanwhile, the use of polyethylene fibre tapes is less effective, and they involve a time-consuming application.

Project description:BackgroundDespite recent advances in restorative dentistry adhesive restorations may cause postoperative sensitivity which leads to restoration failure.AimThis study aimed to compare and evaluate the incremental and bulk fill resin Composite postoperative sensitivity in class II posterior restorations bonded with two adhesive systems (self-etch and etch-and-rinse).MethodsSixty patients were randomly selected, their age range from twenty-five to forty years old, divided into two groups according to the packing technique of resin composite material; incremental Tetric Evoceram and Tetric Evoceram bulk-fill resin composite. Thirty patients (n = 30) for incremental Tetric Evoceram resin composite restorations and according to the adhesive systems used they were equally divided (n = 15 teeth).Thirty patients (n = 30) for Tetric Evoceram bulk-fill resin composite restorations and according to the adhesive systems used (etch and rinse or self-etch), they were equally divided (n = 15 teeth). Post-operative pain assessed at 24 hours, 1 week and 1 month using the Visual Analog Scale Score (VAS). Each patient was instructed to put a mark on the VAS line at home to point out the intensity of pain at each assessment period. The problem of measuring the pain that pain tolerance of individuals may be different from the others. This may be due to different reasons, and it is not always because of a problem in the restoration.ResultsAfter 1 day, 1 week as well as 1 month, no statistically significant disagreement between the two resin composite types using self-etch adhesive strategy and total-etch adhesive strategy. Also, when the two adhesive systems were compared using Bulk Fill resin composite and incremental Nano resin composite no statistically significant disagreement between the two adhesive systems after 1 day, 1 week as well as 1 month.ConclusionThe post-operative hypersensitivity is related to many factors as the procedure of cavity preparation, adhesive approach, and type of resin composite used and placement technique of the resin composite.
