High-pressure, high-temperature molecular doping of nanodiamond.

ABSTRACT: The development of color centers in diamond as the basis for emerging quantum technologies has been limited by the need for ion implantation to create the appropriate defects. We present a versatile method to dope diamond without ion implantation by synthesis of a doped amorphous carbon precursor and transformation at high temperatures and high pressures. To explore this bottom-up method for color center generation, we rationally create silicon vacancy defects in nanodiamond and investigate them for optical pressure metrology. In addition, we show that this process can generate noble gas defects within diamond from the typically inactive argon pressure medium, which may explain the hysteresis effects observed in other high-pressure experiments and the presence of noble gases in some meteoritic nanodiamonds. Our results illustrate a general method to produce color centers in diamond and may enable the controlled generation of designer defects.

Implementation of micro-ball nanodiamond anvils for high-pressure studies above 6 Mbar.

Project description:Since invention of the diamond anvil cell technique in the late 1950s for studying materials at extreme conditions, the maximum static pressure generated so far at room temperature was reported to be about 400 GPa. Here we show that use of micro-semi-balls made of nanodiamond as second-stage anvils in conventional diamond anvil cells drastically extends the achievable pressure range in static compression experiments to above 600 GPa. Micro-anvils (10-50 ?m in diameter) of superhard nanodiamond (with a grain size below ?50 nm) were synthesized in a large volume press using a newly developed technique. In our pilot experiments on rhenium and gold we have studied the equation of state of rhenium at pressures up to 640 GPa and demonstrated the feasibility and crucial necessity of the in situ ultra high-pressure measurements for accurate determination of material properties at extreme conditions.

High-Pressure Polymorphs Nucleated and Stabilized by Rational Doping under Ambient Conditions.

Project description:High-pressure polymorphs can be obtained and stabilized at ambient pressure by utilizing dopants with more voluminous molecules, inducing internal strain in the structures. This effect has been confirmed for doped resorcinol and imidazole derivatives by nucleating and stabilizing their high-pressure phases under ambient conditions. The dopant molecular volume and concentration, as well as the bulk modulus of the polymorph in the binary system, are related to the stability region in the single-component phase diagram. High-pressure isothermal and isochoric recrystallizations yielded pure single crystals of resorcinol ε above 0.20 GPa and a new polymorph ζ above 0.70 GPa. These recrystallizations of pure resorcinol revealed within 1 GPa of the p-T phase diagram the boundaries and the stability regions of four resorcinol polymorphs α, β, ε, and ζ, contrary to the compression experiments on ambient-pressure polymorphs α and β, when the high-pressure phases were hidden behind the wide hysteresis extending to nearly 5 GPa. The hysteresis, originating from the H-bonding networks, hinders the formation of polymorphs ε and ζ when polymorphs α and β are compressed without melting or dissolving the crystals. Polymorph ζ is the only known resorcinol structure built of hydrogen-bonded layers.

Terapascal static pressure generation with ultrahigh yield strength nanodiamond.

Project description:Studies of materials' properties at high and ultrahigh pressures lead to discoveries of unique physical and chemical phenomena and a deeper understanding of matter. In high-pressure research, an achievable static pressure limit is imposed by the strength of available strong materials and design of high-pressure devices. Using a high-pressure and high-temperature technique, we synthesized optically transparent microballs of bulk nanocrystalline diamond, which were found to have an exceptional yield strength (~460 GPa at a confining pressure of ~70 GPa) due to the unique microstructure of bulk nanocrystalline diamond. We used the nanodiamond balls in a double-stage diamond anvil cell high-pressure device that allowed us to generate static pressures beyond 1 TPa, as demonstrated by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Outstanding mechanical properties (strain-dependent elasticity, very high hardness, and unprecedented yield strength) make the nanodiamond balls a unique device for ultrahigh static pressure generation. Structurally isotropic, homogeneous, and made of a low-Z material, they are promising in the field of x-ray optical applications.

Doping induced dielectric anomaly below the Curie temperature in molecular ferroelectric diisopropylammonium bromide.

Project description:A dielectric anomaly induced by doping has been observed at about 340 K in chlorine-doped diisopropylammonium bromide. The dielectric anomaly has a switchable behaviour, which indicates potential applications on switches and sensors. Temperature-dependent Raman spectrum, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry do not show any anomaly around the dielectric anomaly temperature, which prove that the dielectric anomaly does not come from structure phase transition and has no specific heat variety. It is assumed that this dielectric anomaly can be attributed to the freezing of ferroelectric domain walls induced by the pinning of point defects.

Fabrication of nitrogen-hyperdoped silicon by high-pressure gas immersion excimer laser doping.

Project description:In recent years, research on hyperdoped semiconductors has accelerated, displaying dopant concentrations far exceeding solubility limits to surpass the limitations of conventionally doped materials. Nitrogen defects in silicon have been extensively investigated for their unique characteristics compared to other pnictogen dopants. However, previous practical investigations have encountered challenges in achieving high nitrogen defect concentrations due to the low solubility and diffusivity of nitrogen in silicon, and the necessary non-equilibrium techniques, such as ion implantation, resulting in crystal damage and amorphisation. In this study, we present a single-step technique called high-pressure gas immersion excimer laser doping (HP-GIELD) to manufacture nitrogen-hyperdoped silicon. Our approach offers ultrafast processing, scalability, high control, and reproducibility. Employing HP-GIELD, we achieved nitrogen concentrations exceeding 6 at% (3.01 × 1021 at/cm3) in intrinsic silicon. Notably, nitrogen concentration remained above the liquid solubility limit to ~1 µm in depth. HP-GIELD's high-pressure environment effectively suppressed physical surface damage and the generation of silicon dangling bonds, while the well-known effects of pulsed laser annealing (PLA) preserved crystallinity. Additionally, we conducted a theoretical analysis of light-matter interactions and thermal effects governing nitrogen diffusion during HP-GIELD, which provided insights into the doping mechanism. Leveraging excimer lasers, our method is well-suited for integration into high-volume semiconductor manufacturing, particularly front-end-of-line processes.

Room Temperature Magnetic Memory Effect in Nanodiamond/γ-Fe2O3 Composites.

Project description:We report a room temperature magnetic memory effect (RT-MME) from magnetic nanodiamond (MND) (ND)/γ-Fe2O3 nanocomposites. The detailed crystal structural analysis of the diluted MND was performed by synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction, revealing the composite nature of MND having 99 and 1% weight fraction ND and γ-Fe2O3 phases, respectively. The magnetic measurements carried out using a DC SQUID magnetometer show the non-interacting superparamagnetic nature of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in MND have a wide distribution in the blocking temperature. Using different temperature, field, and time relaxation protocols, the memory phenomenon in the DC magnetization has been observed at room temperature (RT). These findings suggest that the dynamics of MND are governed by a wide distribution of particle relaxation times, which arise from the distribution of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticle size. The observed RT ferromagnetism coupled with MME in MND will find potential applications in ND-based spintronics.

High Temperature AlGaN/GaN Membrane Based Pressure Sensors.

Project description:A highly sensitive Gallium Nitride (GaN) diaphragm based micro-scale pressure sensor with an AlGaN/GaN heterostructure field effect transistor (HFET) deflection transducer has been designed and fabricated for high temperature applications. The performance of the pressure sensor was studied over a pressure range of 20 kPa, which resulted in an ultra-high sensitivity of ~0.76%/kPa, with a signal-to-noise ratio as high as 16 dB, when biased optimally in the subthreshold region. A high gauge factor of 260 was determined from strain distribution in the sensor membrane obtained from finite element simulations. A repeatable sensor performance was observed over multiple pressure cycles up to a temperature of 200 °C.

Pressure-induced high-temperature superconductivity retained without pressure in FeSe single crystals.

Project description:To raise the superconducting-transition temperature (Tc) has been the driving force for the long-sustained effort in superconductivity research. Recent progress in hydrides with Tcs up to 287 K under pressure of 267 GPa has heralded a new era of room temperature superconductivity (RTS) with immense technological promise. Indeed, RTS will lift the temperature barrier for the ubiquitous application of superconductivity. Unfortunately, formidable pressure is required to attain such high Tcs. The most effective relief to this impasse is to remove the pressure needed while retaining the pressure-induced Tc without pressure. Here, we show such a possibility in the pure and doped high-temperature superconductor (HTS) FeSe by retaining, at ambient pressure via pressure quenching (PQ), its Tc up to 37 K (quadrupling that of a pristine FeSe at ambient) and other pressure-induced phases. We have also observed that some phases remain stable without pressure at up to 300 K and for at least 7 d. The observations are in qualitative agreement with our ab initio simulations using the solid-state nudged elastic band (SSNEB) method. We strongly believe that the PQ technique developed here can be adapted to the RTS hydrides and other materials of value with minimal effort.

Nanodiamond Theranostic for Light-Controlled Intracellular Heating and Nanoscale Temperature Sensing.

Project description:Temperature is an essential parameter in all biological systems, but information about the actual temperature in living cells is limited. Especially, in photothermal therapy, local intracellular temperature changes induce cell death but the local temperature gradients are not known. Highly sensitive nanothermometers would be required to measure and report local temperature changes independent of the intracellular environment, including pH or ions. Fluorescent nanodiamonds (ND) enable temperature sensing at the nanoscale independent of external conditions. Herein, we prepare ND nanothermometers coated with a nanogel shell and the photothermal agent indocyanine green serves as a heat generator and sensor. Upon irradiation, programmed cell death was induced in cancer cells with high spatial control. In parallel, the increase in local temperature was recorded by the ND nanothermometers. This approach represents a great step forward to record local temperature changes in different cellular environments inside cells and correlate these with thermal biology.
