DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are one of the most lethal forms of DNA damage that is not efficiently repaired in prokaryotes. Certain microorganisms can handle chromosomal DSBs using the error-prone non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) system and ultimately cause genome mutagenesis.
