Panel financial ratios data underlying the performance of conventional and islamic banks operating in GCC.

ABSTRACT: This article contains cross-sectional time series (panel) data on 46 banks that operates in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries. This data reports a number of financial ratios that are constructed from various financial information listed in the Audited Financial Statements of the banks operating in the GCC countries. The financial statements are available in the official website of the banks. The generated financial ratios were exploited in the published article (Salih, Ghecham and Al Barghouthi, 2018). These financial ratios cover perhaps the largest time span (2006-2012) and the largest number of banks that operate in GCC.

Oversight of bank risk-taking by audit committees and Sharia committees: conventional vs Islamic banks.

Project description:By utilizing the Fixed effect and GMM estimators for a sample of 57 Islamic banks and 102 conventional banks from 10 countries for the period 2002-2018, we examine the effect of the audit committees' and Sharia committees' effectiveness on the bank risk-taking behavior and its transmission mechanisms. The results reveal that an audit committee's independence, number of meetings, and financial expertise negatively affect conventional banks' risk-taking, suggesting that the high effectiveness of their audit committees may constrain banks' risk-taking activities. However, no such relationship is evident or observed case of Islamic banks. Instead, with a different transmission mechanism, the proportion of female members and the financial expertise in the Sharia committees negatively affect risk-taking, but the Sharia committee size positively affects risk-taking in Sharia banks. These results indicate that a Sharia committee's high effectiveness can constrain risk-taking behaviors in Islamic banks.

Ownership structure and financial performance: Evidence from Kenyan commercial banks.

Project description:The study examined the relationship between ownership structure and financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya for the period 2009-2020. The data were collected from audited financial statements of 39 commercial banks in Kenya. Regression results found strong evidence on ownership structures in explaining the differences in commercial banks' financial performance. The results established that the greatest influence of ownership structures was on net interest margin at 53.04% and return on assets at 31.37%. Influence of ownership structures was found to be low on return on equity at 3.32% and earnings per share at 2.13%. The results found a negative association between state ownership and net interest margin, negative association between management ownership and both net interest margin and earnings per share, negative association between institutional ownership and return on assets and a negative association between foreign ownership and earnings per share. Based on the findings, commercial banks should vary their ownership structures to boost financial performance. Secondly, banks with high percentage of state ownership should consider partial privatization to improve corporate governance practices. Third, banks should adopt managerial ownership policy limiting the proportion of equity stock on executives to limit their powers in strategic decision making. Fourth, the study proposes a percentage limit on equity stock of an individual institutional investor. Lastly, the study proposes that bank's management to come up with a policy detailing the role and place of foreign investors in strategic decision making to ensure their presence in every decision undertaken by bank managers.

Interest rate volatility and financing of Islamic banks.

Project description:Despite a direct ban on charging interest, interest-based benchmarks are used as a pricing reference by a majority of Islamic banks, due in part to the absence of stable and widely- published alternatives. Benchmarking interest rate exposes Islamic banks to the problems of conventional banks, particularly the interest rate risk. Against this backdrop, the present study empirically examines the dynamic linkage between the interest rate volatility and the financing of Islamic banks. The empirical analysis is carried using evidence from the Islamic banking industry of Pakistan during the time period 2006-2020. The multivariate Johansen and Jusiles Co-integration test and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) are used as the baseline econometric models. Moreover, the DCC-GARCH model is employed for robustness and ensuring the consistency of results. The results indicate that a significant long-term and short-term relationship exists between the interest rate volatility and the financing of Islamic banking industry providing significant evidence for co-movements and convergence. These findings suggest that paradoxical as it may seem, the financing of Islamic banks operating within a dual banking system is subject to interest rate risk, mainly due to benchmarking interest rate, which in-turn makes Islamic banks vulnerable to the rate of return risk and withdrawal risk. Moreover, corporate financing, in particular, is more vulnerable to interest rate risk.

Financial performance of rural banks in Indonesia: A two-stage DEA approach.

Project description:This study aims to analyze the efficiency performance of conventional and Islamic rural banks in Indonesia, specifically, Bank Perkreditan Rakyat (BPR) and Bank Pembiayaan Rakyat Syariah (BPRS). Using a DEA approach, the results indicate that both BPR and BPRS are still inefficient in terms of the intermediation role but are efficient in production. Furthermore, the Tobit estimation show that these two efficiency results are positively affected by location and the capital adequacy ratio (CAR). These rural banks operating in cities tend to have a higher level of efficiency than otherwise. Moreover, the higher the capital, the more efficient both Islamic and conventional rural banks in terms of production and intermediation.

The raw data is easily accessible on Nigeria stock exchange website. We describe the value of this data as well as the method to analyze the data.

Do customers' perceptions of Islamic banking services predict satisfaction and word of mouth? Evidence from Islamic banks in Bangladesh.

Project description:This study aims to investigate the customers' perceptions of Islamic banking services and their impact on satisfaction and word of mouth (WOM) with others. This study designs the bootstrapping procedures using a partial least square method to test path coefficient results. Structured questionnaires were distributed among clients of Islamic banks in Dhaka city, where 377 responses were collected for data analysis. The findings revealed that there is a highly significant relationship between security and customers' perception. Ethical responsibility and religious value have a positive and significant impact on customers' perception whereas benefit has a negative significant impact on customers' perception. Findings from this study also indicated that customers' perceptions mediate the effect of ethical responsibility, religious value, benefit, and security on satisfaction. In addition, customers' satisfaction mediates the effect of customers' perception and WOM. These findings can promote managers of Islamic banks to build customer satisfaction and WOM with Islamic banking services, and attain competitive advantage that may lead Islamic banks to succeed in the competitive business. This study also provides new insights into customers' WOM with others about Islamic banking services. This knowledge could assist Islamic banks to understand the customers' perceptions that would increase satisfaction and in turn, contribute to WOM with others in determining where would be best to target marketing attention of Islamic banking services with limited resources.

Spillover of volatility among financial instruments: ASEAN-5 and GCC market study.

Project description:The research examines a comovement and spillover of volatility among foreign exchange, conventional and shariah stock markets in Association of South East Asian Nation-5 (ASEAN) countries and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity-Baba, Engle, Kraft and Kroner (GARCH-BEKK) and Dynamic Conditional Correlation (GARCH-DCC) models are used to capture the correlation and transmission volatility of the markets. The overall results show that both the Shariah and the conventional stock indices respond similarly to each country's currency. A bidirectional (two-way relationship) volatility spillover exists only in Malaysia and a unidirectional (one-way relationship) volatility is observed in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Bahrain. The rest of the markets-the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-do not have any volatility spillover evidence. Based on DCC outcomes, the conventional and Shariah stock in ASEAN-5 countries and GCC countries reveal the market efficiency, i.e., a positive high conditional correlation. Only Bahrain shows less efficiency than the other countries. It implies no portfolio diversification advantage in conventional and Shariah stock indices. Contrarily, currency and stock (conventional and Shariah) markets provide portfolio diversification benefits for all ASEAN-5 and GCC countries.

Panel data on factoring payables and financial ratios of publicly listed firms in Turkey over the years 2012-2017.

Project description:This panel data set comprises of the annual factoring payables and financial ratios of 261 publicly listed firms in Turkey for the period of 2012-2017. The raw data are drawn from three different sources; the Central Bank of Republic of Turkey (CBRT) database, the audit reports disclosed through the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) of Turkey and Compustat Global Capital IQ (Compustat) database. The originality of this data set is the revealment of factoring payables at the firm level in Turkey for the first time. This paper and its dataset are a companion for a published article in the Borsa Istanbul Review under the title "Factoring as a determinant of capital structure for large firms: Theoretical and empirical analysis" [1].

The impact of uncertain financial risk on the operation efficiency of banks.

Project description:This paper introduces the latest research on the application of the new dynamic network DEA method in the measurement of the operating efficiency of the banking industry, and measures the operating efficiency of 15 listed banks in China by using the directional distance function (DDF) and the new dynamic network DEA model combined with the Malmquist index. To effectively evaluate the impact of uncertain financial risks on the operating efficiency of banks, we respectively selected the measurement indicators of total assets, number of employees, deposits, and net profit to calculate the operating efficiency of banks in the process of medium and long-term investment. According to the actual situation of bank operation, the process of bank operation is divided into the input stage of capital and manpower, the profit stage of capital operation, and operation stage, and a two-stage DEA network model is constructed. By measuring the overall operating efficiency of China's 15 banks from 2017 to 2022, the results show that the new dynamic network DEA model can better distinguish the efficiency of China's banks from the single-stage DEA model. In the new dynamic network model, the total factor productivity of most banks in China is reduced to varying degrees, which is greatly affected by pure technical efficiency.

Panel and geospatial data for U.S. FDIC insured banks fiduciary activities and annual performance analyses over the periods 2016 to 2018.

Project description:Created in 1934, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is the independent agency of the United States Government tasked to protect depositors of insured banks located in the U.S. against the loss of their deposits in case of bank failure. To achieve this objective, the FDIC collects data on banks condition and income through quarterly Financial Report calls, which are then publicly released as "Statistics on Depository Institutions (SDI)". The present data article, as a follow up to Niankara and Ismail, 2019 that focuses on U.S. banks' exposure to foreign counterparty risk, describes an extract from the quarterly SDIs that is compiled into a panel of 16209 observations on 5403 U.S. FDIC insured Banks, observed over the three-year periods of 2016, 2017 and 2018. Since our objective is to bring forth a useful data source for analyzing U.S. FDIC banks fiduciary activities and annual performance changes over the past recent years, our constructed sample contains all FDIC insured banks with end of year (4th quarter) financial reporting for each of the 3 fiscal years 2016-2018. We further supplement this data with U.S. county and state level geospatial data that allow analysts and business researchers to address questions with temporal significance, but also spatial relevance through appropriate modelling and mapping of the data. Finally, we demonstrate the usability of the data using R based descriptive analytics, with computer codes provided for prospective Analysts and business researchers.
