Panel data on factoring payables and financial ratios of publicly listed firms in Turkey over the years 2012-2017.

ABSTRACT: This panel data set comprises of the annual factoring payables and financial ratios of 261 publicly listed firms in Turkey for the period of 2012-2017. The raw data are drawn from three different sources; the Central Bank of Republic of Turkey (CBRT) database, the audit reports disclosed through the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) of Turkey and Compustat Global Capital IQ (Compustat) database. The originality of this data set is the revealment of factoring payables at the firm level in Turkey for the first time. This paper and its dataset are a companion for a published article in the Borsa Istanbul Review under the title "Factoring as a determinant of capital structure for large firms: Theoretical and empirical analysis" [1].

Predicting financial distress in TSX-listed firms using machine learning algorithms.

Project description:IntroductionThis study investigates the application of machine learning (ML) algorithms, a subset of artificial intelligence (AI), to predict financial distress in companies. Given the critical need for reliable financial health indicators, this research evaluates the predictive capabilities of various ML techniques on firm-level financial data.MethodsThe dataset comprises financial ratios and firm-specific variables from 464 firms listed on the TSX. Multiple ML models were tested, including decision trees, random forests, support vector machines (SVM), and artificial neural networks (ANN). Recursive feature elimination with cross-validation (RFECV) and bootstrapped CART were also employed to enhance model stability and feature selection.ResultsThe findings highlight key predictors of financial distress, such as revenue growth, dividend growth, cash-to-current liabilities, and gross profit margins. Among the models tested, the ANN classifier achieved the highest accuracy at 98%, outperforming other algorithms.DiscussionThe results suggest that ANN provides a robust and reliable method for financial distress prediction. The use of RFECV and bootstrapped CART contributes to the model's stability, underscoring the potential of ML tools in financial health monitoring. These insights carry valuable implications for auditors, regulators, and company management in enhancing practices around financial oversight and fraud detection.

Examining financial distress of the Vietnamese listed firms using accounting-based models.

Project description:Financial distress is generally considered the most severe consequence for firms with poor financial performance. The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic has adversely impacted the global business system and exacerbated the number of financially distressed firms in many countries. Only firms with strong financial fundamentals can survive extreme events such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Vietnam is no exception. However, studies examining financial distress using accounting-based indicators, particularly at the industry level, have largely been ignored in the Vietnamese context, particularly with the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic. This study, therefore, comprehensively examines financial distress for 500 Vietnamese listed firms during the 2012-2021 period. Our study uses interest coverage and times-interest-earned ratios to proxy a firm's financial distress. First, our findings confirm the validity of Altman's Z"- score model in Vietnam only when the interest coverage ratio is used as a proxy for financial distress. Second, our empirical findings indicate that only four financial ratios, including EBIT/Total Assets, Net Income/Total Assets, Total Liabilities/Total Assets, and Total Equity/Total Liabilities, can be used in predicting financial distress in Vietnam. Third, our analysis at the industry level indicates that the "Construction & Real Estates" industry, a significant contributor to the national economy, exhibits the most significant risk exposure, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Policy implications have emerged based on the findings from this study.

A comprehensive dataset of board of directors attributes of Pakistan stock exchange listed non-financial firms.

Project description:The data set of this article is related to the paper "Do Board of Directors' Characteristics Matter in Restraining Earnings Manipulation? Empirical Evidence from Pakistan Stock Exchange" Khan and Kamal, (2021) [1]. This data article presents the raw data of 315 non-financial listed firms of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (hereafter, PSX). The data relating to the Board of Directors has been manually extracted from 1890 annual reports of the concerned companies and the financial data were extracted from State Bank of Pakistan sources, business-recorder and PSX Data portal. The dataset is an unbalanced panel data consisting of 1882 firms' year's observations from 2014 to 2019 based on 315 non-financial listed firms consists of 20 variables. This paper's dataset is valid and useful for researchers/scholars in many ways such as linking the board of directors to corporate governance, internal governance vs external governance, audit quality, financial reporting quality, firm performance, industry performance, corporate social responsibility and government regulation.

Effects of board gender and foreign directorship on the financial sustainability of Saudi listed firms: Does family ownership matter?

Project description:This study investigates how family ownership may influence the effects of board gender and foreign directorship on the financial sustainability. The panel data of 103 Saudi non-financial listed companies from 2013 to 2022 was analyzed using fixed effects, and the generalized method of moments (GMM) was used for robustness test. The research findings suggest a strong and positive effect of foreign directorship on financial sustainability, consistent with the resource dependency view and agency theory. However, board gender exerts a negative and significant influence, contradicting existing theories. Further, the moderation results show that family ownership positively moderates the effects of both board gender and foreign directorship on financial sustainability. This positive moderating result supports the agency theory's argument that robust and stringent monitoring of corporate ownership may complement boards' functions and boost organizational efficiency. The policy decision of the findings is that setting corporate boards with a considerable ratio of foreign directors may lead to sustainable performance. Also, it implies that family ownership seems to be an essential mechanism that can neutralize the adverse effects of boardroom diversity on outcomes.

The impact of economic policy uncertainty on firms' investment in innovation: Evidence from Chinese listed firms.

Project description:This paper uses data of Chinese listed enterprises and economic policy uncertainty index for empirical analysis, and conducts a study through three channels of monetary policy uncertainty affecting enterprise innovation investment, and finds that economic policy uncertainty has a positive promotion effect on enterprise R&D investment, and its increase in tension is instead a clear signal that can effectively increase enterprise R&D investment, this promotion effect seems unexpected, this paper Through theoretical analysis and combined with the actual practice, this incentive effect is found to be in line with reality. However, in the subsequent heterogeneity analysis, this paper finds that it positively promotes R&D investment when economic policy uncertainty is low and may have a suppressive effect on R&D investment when monetary policy uncertainty is high.

Panel financial ratios data underlying the performance of conventional and islamic banks operating in GCC.

Project description:This article contains cross-sectional time series (panel) data on 46 banks that operates in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries. This data reports a number of financial ratios that are constructed from various financial information listed in the Audited Financial Statements of the banks operating in the GCC countries. The financial statements are available in the official website of the banks. The generated financial ratios were exploited in the published article (Salih, Ghecham and Al Barghouthi, 2018). These financial ratios cover perhaps the largest time span (2006-2012) and the largest number of banks that operate in GCC.

Impact of Korea's emissions trading scheme on publicly traded firms.

Project description:Reducing fossil fuel energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is vital to protecting life on the planet. Globally, emissions trading schemes are gaining traction as one way to curb emissions. However, the evidence of their effectiveness remains scarce. To address this gap, we examine the impact of Korea's Emissions Trading Scheme (KETS), the first nationally mandated cap-and-trade program in East Asia to reduce GHG emissions, relative to its pre-existing command-and-control regulation called the Target Management System for Greenhouse Gases and Energy (TMS). Using panel data for publicly traded firms between 2011 and 2017, we apply a combination of panel data estimators and matching methods. We find that KETS did not significantly reduce emissions by firms but may have improved the aggregate efficiency in energy use in the energy and manufacturing sectors. Given the low levels of noncompliance with the first phase of the policy, it is likely that firms purchased permits and offsets or used previously banked permits to meet policy targets. Our work is one of the first efforts to understand the impact of KETS and the mechanisms underpinning its impact.

Does managerial myopia promote enterprises over-financialization? Evidence from listed firms in China.

Project description:This paper analyzes the potential shortsightedness of enterprise managers through annual reports. Additionally, we use corporate financial statement data to measure enterprises over-financialization in terms of resource allocation. After testing with a causal inference model, we find that firms with managerial myopia significantly contribute to over-financialization. It remains robust even after the instrumental variable of whether the manager has experienced a famine is used. Furthermore, financial distress and financing constraints amplify the inclination of short-term-focused managers to amass greater financial assets.
