Experimental Observation of Linear and Rotational Doppler Shifts from Several Designer Surfaces.

ABSTRACT: An orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying beam has the ability to detect a spinning surface from its rotational Doppler effect. However, a mixture of linear and rotational Doppler effects can occur when an OAM beam is illuminated to a target, with not only spins but also vibrations. In this paper, we experimentally observe using OAM carrying beams, both linear and rotational Doppler effects from several designer surfaces. Specifically, a spinning polarization-independent metasurface, helicoidal reflector and propeller are applied respectively in this study. We demonstrate by the use of two microwave beams with opposite OAM to separate rotational Doppler shift from micro-Doppler shift. The proposed method can also be applied to measure the spinning speed of rotational objects, which have wider applications in intelligent sensing, radar and quantum optics.

Rotational Doppler cooling and heating.

Project description:Doppler cooling is a widely used technique to laser cool atoms, molecules, and nanoparticles by exploiting the Doppler shift associated with translational motion. The rotational Doppler effect arising from rotational coordinate transformation should similarly enable optical manipulation of the rotational motion of nanosystems. Here, we show that rotational Doppler cooling and heating (RDC and RDH) effects embody rich and unexplored physics, including an unexpected strong dependence on particle morphology. For geometrically constrained particles, cooling and heating are observed at red- or blue-detuned laser frequencies relative to particle resonances. In contrast, for nanosystems that can be modeled as solid particles, RDH appears close to resonant illumination, while detuned frequencies produce cooling of rotation. We further predict that RDH can lead to optomechanical spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, where an achiral particle under linearly polarized illumination starts spontaneously rotating. Our results open up new exciting possibilities to control the rotational motion of nanosystems.

Observation of the Zero Doppler Effect.

Project description:The normal Doppler effect has well-established applications in many areas of science and technology. Recently, a few experimental demonstrations of the inverse Doppler effect have begun to appear in negative-index metamaterials. Here we report an experimental observation of the zero Doppler effect, that is, no frequency shift irrespective of the relative motion between the wave signal source and the detector in a zero-index metamaterial. This unique phenomenon, accompanied by the normal and inverse Doppler effects, is generated by reflecting a wave from a moving discontinuity in a composite right/left-handed transmission line loaded with varactors when operating in the near zero-index passband, or the right/left-handed passband. This work has revealed a complete picture of the Doppler effect in metamaterials and may lead to potential applications in electromagnetic wave related metrology.

Acoustic topological beam nonreciprocity via the rotational Doppler effect.

Project description:Reciprocity is a fundamental principle of wave physics related to time-reversal symmetry. Nonreciprocal wave behaviors have been pursued for decades because of their great scientific significance and tremendous potential applications. However, nonreciprocity devices have been based on manipulation of non-topological charge (TC) in most studies to date. Here, we introduce the rotational Doppler effect (RDE) into the acoustic system to achieve nonreciprocal control of the TC beam. We use the metasurface to generate a vortex beam with a defined TC. By rotating the metasurface with specific angular velocity, the wave vector of the transmitted wave obtains positive and negative transition flexibly due to the RDE. As a result, isolated and propagating states of the vortex beam can be realized by controlling the rotation direction, representing nonreciprocal propagation. Our work also provides an alternative method for the application of TC beams and the realization of nonreciprocity.

Fast-moving bat ears create informative Doppler shifts.

Project description:Many animals have evolved adept sensory systems that enable dexterous mobility in complex environments. Echolocating bats hunting in dense vegetation represent an extreme case of this, where all necessary information about the environment must pass through a parsimonious channel of pulsed, 1D echo signals. We have investigated whether certain bats (rhinolophids and hipposiderids) actively create Doppler shifts with their pinnae to encode additional sensory information. Our results show that the bats' active pinna motions are a source of Doppler shifts that have all attributes required for a functional relevance: (i) the Doppler shifts produced were several times larger than the reported perception threshold; (ii) the motions of the fastest moving pinna portions were oriented to maximize the Doppler shifts for echoes returning from the emission direction, indicating a possible evolutionary optimization; (iii) pinna motions coincided with echo reception; (iv) Doppler-shifted signals from the fast-moving pinna portion entered the ear canal of a biomimetic pinna model; and (v) the time-frequency Doppler shift signatures were found to encode target direction in an orderly fashion. These results indicate that instead of avoiding or suppressing all self-produced Doppler shifts, rhinolophid and hipposiderid bats actively create Doppler shifts with their own pinnae. These bats could hence make use of a previously unknown nonlinear mechanism for the encoding of sensory information, based on Doppler signatures. Such a mechanism could be a source for the discovery of sensing principles not only in sensory physiology but also in the engineering of sensory systems.

Recoil-induced ultrafast molecular rotation probed by dynamical rotational Doppler effect.

Project description:Observing and controlling molecular motion and in particular rotation are fundamental topics in physics and chemistry. To initiate ultrafast rotation, one needs a way to transfer a large angular momentum to the molecule. As a showcase, this was performed by hard X-ray C1s ionization of carbon monoxide accompanied by spinning up the molecule via the recoil "kick" of the emitted fast photoelectron. To visualize this molecular motion, we use the dynamical rotational Doppler effect and an X-ray "pump-probe" device offered by nature itself: the recoil-induced ultrafast rotation is probed by subsequent Auger electron emission. The time information in our experiment originates from the natural delay between the C1s photoionization initiating the rotation and the ejection of the Auger electron. From a more general point of view, time-resolved measurements can be performed in two ways: either to vary the "delay" time as in conventional time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy and use the dynamics given by the system, or to keep constant delay time and manipulate the dynamics. Since in our experiment we cannot change the delay time given by the core-hole lifetime τ, we use the second option and control the rotational speed by changing the kinetic energy of the photoelectron. The recoil-induced rotational dynamics controlled in such a way is observed as a photon energy-dependent asymmetry of the Auger line shape, in full agreement with theory. This asymmetry is explained by a significant change of the molecular orientation during the core-hole lifetime, which is comparable with the rotational period.

Spatiotemporal Acoustic Communication by a Single Sensor via Rotational Doppler Effect.

Project description:A longstanding pursuit in information communication is to increase transmission capacity and accuracy, with multiplexing technology playing as a promising solution. To overcome the challenges of limited spatial information density and systematic complexity in acoustic communication, here real-time spatiotemporal communication is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by a single sensor based on the rotational Doppler effect. The information carried in multiplexed orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) channels is transformed into the physical quantities of the temporal harmonic waveform and simultaneously detected by a single sensor. This single-sensor configuration is independent of the channel number and encoding scheme. The parallel transmission of complicated images is demonstrated by multiplexing eight OAM channels and achieving an extremely-low bit error rate (BER) exceeding 0.02%, owing to the intrinsic discrete frequency shift of the rotational Doppler effect. The immunity to inner-mode crosstalk and robustness to noise of the simple and low-cost communication paradigm offers promising potential to promote relevant fields.

A field observation of rotational feeding by Neogobius melanostomus.

Project description:Neogobius melanostomus, the round goby, was recorded by underwater video feeding on crushed dreissenid mussels at a depth of 12 m in Georgian Bay of Lake Huron, a Laurentian Great Lake. In the video, gobies used rotational or twist feeding to tear away particles from crushed mussels. At least 43 examples of this feeding maneuver occur in the video. Up to 120 gobies m-2 were visible at a time in the video. Mean standard length of gobies appearing in the video was 37 mm. Mean standard length of fish exhibiting twist feeding was larger, 48 mm. Mean size of intact mussels in visible clusters was about 10×20 mm, a size which exceeds the gape width of the largest gobies observed in the video. Neogobius melanostomus is known to use twisting to wrest small attached mussels from the substrates which can be crushed by their pharyngeal teeth. I surmise that the behavior observed in the video is an opportunistic manifestation of this inherent behavioral adaptation to overcome gap limitation and exploit a temporary windfall of food.

Realizing Tunable Inverse and Normal Doppler Shifts in Reconfigurable RF Metamaterials.

Project description:The Doppler effect has well-established applications in astronomy, medicine, radar and metrology. Recently, a number of experimental demonstrations of the inverse Doppler effect have begun to appear. However, the inverse Doppler effect has never been observed on an electronically reconfigurable system with an external electromagnetic wave source at radio frequencies (RF) in experiment. Here we demonstrate an experimental observation of the inverse Doppler shift on an electronically reconfigurable RF metamaterial structure, which can exhibit anomalous dispersion, normal dispersion or a stop band, depending on an applied bias voltage. Either inverse or normal Doppler shift is realized by injecting an external RF signal into the electronically reconfigurable metamaterial, on which an electronically controllable moving reflective boundary is formed. The effective velocity of this boundary and the resulting frequency shift can be tuned over a wide range by a digital switching circuit. This work is expected to open up possibilities in applying the inverse Doppler effect in wireless communications, radar and satellite navigation.

Observation of the non-linear Meissner effect.

Project description:A long-standing theoretical prediction is that in clean, nodal unconventional superconductors the magnetic penetration depth λ, at zero temperature, varies linearly with magnetic field. This non-linear Meissner effect is an equally important manifestation of the nodal state as the well studied linear-in-T dependence of λ, but has never been convincingly experimentally observed. Here we present measurements of the nodal superconductors CeCoIn5 and LaFePO which clearly show this non-linear Meissner effect. We further show how the effect of a small dc magnetic field on λ(T) can be used to distinguish gap nodes from non-nodal deep gap minima. Our measurements of KFe2As2 suggest that this material has such a non-nodal state.

Direct observation of valley-polarized topological edge states in designer surface plasmon crystals.

Project description:The extensive research of two-dimensional layered materials has revealed that valleys, as energy extrema in momentum space, could offer a new degree of freedom for carrying information. Based on this concept, researchers have predicted valley-Hall topological insulators that could support valley-polarized edge states at non-trivial domain walls. Recently, several kinds of photonic and sonic crystals have been proposed as classical counterparts of valley-Hall topological insulators. However, direct experimental observation of valley-polarized edge states in photonic crystals has remained difficult until now. Here, we demonstrate a designer surface plasmon crystal comprising metallic patterns deposited on a dielectric substrate, which can become a valley-Hall photonic topological insulator by exploiting the mirror-symmetry-breaking mechanism. Topological edge states with valley-dependent transport are directly visualized in the microwave regime. The observed edge states are confirmed to be fully valley-polarized through spatial Fourier transforms. Topological protection of the edge states at sharp corners is also experimentally demonstrated.
