Acoustic topological beam nonreciprocity via the rotational Doppler effect.

ABSTRACT: Reciprocity is a fundamental principle of wave physics related to time-reversal symmetry. Nonreciprocal wave behaviors have been pursued for decades because of their great scientific significance and tremendous potential applications. However, nonreciprocity devices have been based on manipulation of non-topological charge (TC) in most studies to date. Here, we introduce the rotational Doppler effect (RDE) into the acoustic system to achieve nonreciprocal control of the TC beam. We use the metasurface to generate a vortex beam with a defined TC. By rotating the metasurface with specific angular velocity, the wave vector of the transmitted wave obtains positive and negative transition flexibly due to the RDE. As a result, isolated and propagating states of the vortex beam can be realized by controlling the rotation direction, representing nonreciprocal propagation. Our work also provides an alternative method for the application of TC beams and the realization of nonreciprocity.

Spatiotemporal Acoustic Communication by a Single Sensor via Rotational Doppler Effect.

Project description:A longstanding pursuit in information communication is to increase transmission capacity and accuracy, with multiplexing technology playing as a promising solution. To overcome the challenges of limited spatial information density and systematic complexity in acoustic communication, here real-time spatiotemporal communication is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by a single sensor based on the rotational Doppler effect. The information carried in multiplexed orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) channels is transformed into the physical quantities of the temporal harmonic waveform and simultaneously detected by a single sensor. This single-sensor configuration is independent of the channel number and encoding scheme. The parallel transmission of complicated images is demonstrated by multiplexing eight OAM channels and achieving an extremely-low bit error rate (BER) exceeding 0.02%, owing to the intrinsic discrete frequency shift of the rotational Doppler effect. The immunity to inner-mode crosstalk and robustness to noise of the simple and low-cost communication paradigm offers promising potential to promote relevant fields.

Programming nonreciprocity and harmonic beam steering via a digitally space-time-coded metamaterial antenna

Project description:Recent advancement in digital coding metasurfaces incorporating spatial and temporal modulation has enabled simultaneous control of electromagnetic (EM) waves in both space and frequency domains by manipulating incident EM waves in a transmissive or reflective fashion, resulting in time-reversal asymmetry. Here we show in theory and experiment that a digitally space-time-coded metamaterial (MTM) antenna with spatiotemporal modulation at its unit cell level can be regarded as a radiating counterpart of such digital metasurface, which will enable nonreciprocal EM wave transmission and reception via surface-to-leaky-wave transformation and harmonic frequency generation. Operating in the fast wave (radiation) region, the space-time-coded MTM antenna is tailored in a way such that the propagation constant of each programmable unit cell embedded with varactor diodes can toggle between positive and negative phases, which is done through providing digital sequences by using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Owing to the time-varying coding sequence, harmonic frequencies are generated with different main beam directions. Furthermore, the space time modulation of the digitally coded MTM antenna allows for nonreciprocal transmission and reception of EM waves by breaking the time-reversal symmetry, which may enable many applications, such as simultaneous transmitting and receiving, unidirectional transmission, radar sensing, and multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) beamformer.

Recoil-induced ultrafast molecular rotation probed by dynamical rotational Doppler effect.

Project description:Observing and controlling molecular motion and in particular rotation are fundamental topics in physics and chemistry. To initiate ultrafast rotation, one needs a way to transfer a large angular momentum to the molecule. As a showcase, this was performed by hard X-ray C1s ionization of carbon monoxide accompanied by spinning up the molecule via the recoil "kick" of the emitted fast photoelectron. To visualize this molecular motion, we use the dynamical rotational Doppler effect and an X-ray "pump-probe" device offered by nature itself: the recoil-induced ultrafast rotation is probed by subsequent Auger electron emission. The time information in our experiment originates from the natural delay between the C1s photoionization initiating the rotation and the ejection of the Auger electron. From a more general point of view, time-resolved measurements can be performed in two ways: either to vary the "delay" time as in conventional time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy and use the dynamics given by the system, or to keep constant delay time and manipulate the dynamics. Since in our experiment we cannot change the delay time given by the core-hole lifetime τ, we use the second option and control the rotational speed by changing the kinetic energy of the photoelectron. The recoil-induced rotational dynamics controlled in such a way is observed as a photon energy-dependent asymmetry of the Auger line shape, in full agreement with theory. This asymmetry is explained by a significant change of the molecular orientation during the core-hole lifetime, which is comparable with the rotational period.

Rotational Doppler cooling and heating.

Project description:Doppler cooling is a widely used technique to laser cool atoms, molecules, and nanoparticles by exploiting the Doppler shift associated with translational motion. The rotational Doppler effect arising from rotational coordinate transformation should similarly enable optical manipulation of the rotational motion of nanosystems. Here, we show that rotational Doppler cooling and heating (RDC and RDH) effects embody rich and unexplored physics, including an unexpected strong dependence on particle morphology. For geometrically constrained particles, cooling and heating are observed at red- or blue-detuned laser frequencies relative to particle resonances. In contrast, for nanosystems that can be modeled as solid particles, RDH appears close to resonant illumination, while detuned frequencies produce cooling of rotation. We further predict that RDH can lead to optomechanical spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, where an achiral particle under linearly polarized illumination starts spontaneously rotating. Our results open up new exciting possibilities to control the rotational motion of nanosystems.

Giant nonreciprocity of surface acoustic waves enabled by the magnetoelastic interaction.

Project description:Nonreciprocity, the defining characteristic of isolators, circulators, and a wealth of other applications in radio/microwave communications technologies, is generally difficult to achieve as most physical systems incorporate symmetries that prevent the effect. In particular, acoustic waves are an important medium for information transport, but they are inherently symmetric in time. In this work, we report giant nonreciprocity in the transmission of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) on lithium niobate substrate coated with ferromagnet/insulator/ferromagnet (FeGaB/Al2O3/FeGaB) multilayer structure. We exploit this structure with a unique asymmetric band diagram and expand on magnetoelastic coupling theory to show how the magnetic bands couple with acoustic waves only in a single direction. We measure 48.4-dB (power ratio of 1:69,200) isolation that outperforms current state-of-the-art microwave isolator devices in a previously unidentified acoustic wave system that facilitates unprecedented size, weight, and power reduction. In addition, these results offer a promising platform to study nonreciprocal SAW devices.

Magnetoactive Acoustic Topological Transistors.

Project description:Topological field-effect transistor is a revolutionary concept that physical fields are used to switch on and off quantum topological states of the condensed matter. Although this emerging concept has been explored in electronics, how to realize it in the acoustic realm remains elusive. In this work, a class of magnetoactive acoustic topological transistors capable of on-demand switching on and off topological states and reconfiguring topological edges with external magnetic fields is presented. The key mechanism is to harness magnetic fields to tune air-cavity volumes within acoustic chambers, thus breaking or preserving the inversion symmetry to manifest or conceal the quantum valley Hall effect. To switch the topological transport beyond the in-plane routes, a magneto-tuned non-topological band gap to allow or forbid the wave transport out-of-plane is harnessed. With the reversible magnetic control, on-demand switching of topological routes to realize topological field-effect waveguides and wave regulators is demonstrated. Analogous to the impact of semiconductor transistors on modern electronics, this work may expand the scope of topological acoustics by achieving unprecedented functions in acoustic modulation.

Topological acoustic triple point.

Project description:Acoustic phonon is a classic example of triple degeneracy point in band structure. This triple point always appears in phonon spectrum because of the Nambu-Goldstone theorem. Here, we show that this triple point can carry a topological charge [Formula: see text] that is a property of three-band systems with space-time-inversion symmetry. The charge [Formula: see text] can equivalently be characterized by the skyrmion number of the longitudinal mode, or by the Euler number of the transverse modes. We call triple points with nontrivial [Formula: see text] the topological acoustic triple point (TATP). TATP can also appear at high-symmetry momenta in phonon and spinless electron spectrums when Oh or Th groups protect it. The charge [Formula: see text] constrains the nodal structure and wavefunction texture around TATP, and can induce anomalous thermal transport of phonons and orbital Hall effect of electrons. Gapless points protected by the Nambu-Goldstone theorem form a new platform to study the topology of band degeneracies.

Inverse Doppler Effects in Broadband Acoustic Metamaterials.

Project description:The Doppler effect refers to the change in frequency of a wave source as a consequence of the relative motion between the source and an observer. Veselago theoretically predicted that materials with negative refractions can induce inverse Doppler effects. With the development of metamaterials, inverse Doppler effects have been extensively investigated. However, the ideal material parameters prescribed by these metamaterial design approaches are complex and also challenging to obtain experimentally. Here, we demonstrated a method of designing and experimentally characterising arbitrary broadband acoustic metamaterials. These omni-directional, double-negative, acoustic metamaterials are constructed with 'flute-like' acoustic meta-cluster sets with seven double meta-molecules; these metamaterials also overcome the limitations of broadband negative bulk modulus and mass density to provide a region of negative refraction and inverse Doppler effects. It was also shown that inverse Doppler effects can be detected in a flute, which has been popular for thousands of years in Asia and Europe.

Topological dislocation modes in three-dimensional acoustic topological insulators.

Project description:Dislocations are ubiquitous in three-dimensional solid-state materials. The interplay of such real space topology with the emergent band topology defined in reciprocal space gives rise to gapless helical modes bound to the line defects. This is known as bulk-dislocation correspondence, in contrast to the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence featuring topological states at boundaries. However, to date rare compelling experimental evidences have been presented for this intriguing topological observable in solid-state systems, owing to the huge challenges in creating controllable dislocations and conclusively identifying topological signals. Here, using a three-dimensional acoustic weak topological insulator with precisely controllable dislocations, we report an unambiguous experimental evidence for the long-desired bulk-dislocation correspondence, through directly measuring the gapless dispersion of the one-dimensional topological dislocation modes. Remarkably, as revealed in our further experiments, the pseudospin-locked dislocation modes can be unidirectionally guided in an arbitrarily-shaped dislocation path. The peculiar topological dislocation transport, expected in a variety of classical wave systems, can provide unprecedented control over wave propagations.

Acoustic resolution photoacoustic Doppler velocimetry in blood-mimicking fluids.

Project description:Photoacoustic Doppler velocimetry provides a major opportunity to overcome limitations of existing blood flow measuring methods. By enabling measurements with high spatial resolution several millimetres deep in tissue, it could probe microvascular blood flow abnormalities characteristic of many different diseases. Although previous work has demonstrated feasibility in solid phantoms, measurements in blood have proved significantly more challenging. This difficulty is commonly attributed to the requirement that the absorber spatial distribution is heterogeneous relative to the minimum detectable acoustic wavelength. By undertaking a rigorous study using blood-mimicking fluid suspensions of 3 μm absorbing microspheres, it was discovered that the perceived heterogeneity is not only limited by the intrinsic detector bandwidth; in addition, bandlimiting due to spatial averaging within the detector field-of-view also reduces perceived heterogeneity and compromises velocity measurement accuracy. These detrimental effects were found to be mitigated by high-pass filtering to select photoacoustic signal components associated with high heterogeneity. Measurement under-reading due to limited light penetration into the flow vessel was also observed. Accurate average velocity measurements were recovered using "range-gating", which furthermore maps the cross-sectional velocity profile. These insights may help pave the way to deep-tissue non-invasive mapping of microvascular blood flow using photoacoustic methods.
