Data supporting the improvement of forecasting and control of electricity consumption in hotels.

ABSTRACT: Improving and managing the electricity efficiency in hotel facilities is essential to reduce the hotel operation costs and its environmental impacts. The data presented shows the evolution of the electricity consumption and management between 2013 and 2015 in two hotel facilities in Cuba (one beach hotel and one city hotel). The data additionally includes the daily measures used to develop control tools for an energy management system. The data presented in the article relates to the research study: Tools to improve forecasting and control of the electricity consumption in hotels Cabello et al., 2016, and it corresponds to the energy audits developed in one beach hotel (Hotel A) and one city hotel (Hotel B) in Cuba.

Methodology for forecasting electricity consumption by Grey and Vector autoregressive models.

Project description:Forecasting energy demand in general, and electricity demand in particular, requires the developing reliable forecasting tools that can be used to monitor the evolution of consumers' energy needs more accurately. The proposed new hybrid GM(1,1)-VAR(1) model is meant for that purpose. The latter is based on the Grey and Vector autoregressive approaches, and makes it possible to predict future demand, by taking into account economic and demographic determinants with an exponential growth trend. With an associated APE of 1.5, a MAPE of 1.628%, and an RMSE of 15.42, this new model thus presents better accuracy indicators than hybrid models of the same nature. Also, it proves to be as accurate as some recent hybrid artificial intelligence models. The model is thus a reliable forecasting tool that can be used to monitor the evolution of energy demand.•The Grey and Vector autoregressive models are coupled to improve their accuracy.•Five economic and demographic parameters are included in the new hybrid model.•This new model is a reliable forecasting tool for assessing energy demand.

Advancing ensemble learning techniques for residential building electricity consumption forecasting: Insight from explainable artificial intelligence.

Project description:Accurate electricity consumption forecasting in residential buildings has a direct impact on energy efficiency and cost management, making it a critical component of sustainable energy practices. Decision tree-based ensemble learning techniques are particularly effective for this task due to their ability to process complex datasets with high accuracy. Furthermore, incorporating explainable artificial intelligence into these predictions provides clarity and interpretability, allowing energy managers and homeowners to make informed decisions that optimize usage and reduce costs. This study comparatively analyzes decision tree-ensemble learning techniques augmented with explainable artificial intelligence for transparency and interpretability in residential building energy consumption forecasting. This approach employs the University Residential Complex and Appliances Energy Prediction datasets, data preprocessing, and decision-tree bagging and boosting methods. The superior model is evaluated using the Shapley additive explanations method within the explainable artificial intelligence framework, explaining the influence of input variables and decision-making processes. The analysis reveals the significant influence of the temperature-humidity index and wind chill temperature on short-term load forecasting, transcending traditional parameters, such as temperature, humidity, and wind speed. The complete study and source code have been made available on our GitHub repository at https://github.com/sodayeong for the purpose of enhancing precision and interpretability in energy system management, thereby promoting transparency and enabling replication.

Electricity consumption data of a student residence in Southern Africa.

Project description:The time-series dataset presented in this article was captured using a real-time energy monitoring device from a distribution panel of a student residence in Johannesburg, South Africa. The data was captured from April 2016 to January 2018. The data from the three conductors supplying the student residence with electricity was automatically aggregated and presented as a single data point. The granularity was at resolution levels of watt-minute and kilowatt-hour. A total of 13,966 hrs of data points was captured. The data has not been processed further. Hence, data consists of 1,209-hour of missing data points. In addition to the energy consumption data, 16 months of hourly data for wind speed, temperature and humidity of the closest weather station has been provided. The data will be useful in the formulation of mathematical models of electricity consumption that is most suitable for a student residence. Furthermore, the data provided in this article will encourage the development of a data-driven electricity consumption management strategy and policy formulation for student residences.

Data-driven load profiles and the dynamics of residential electricity consumption.

Project description:The dynamics of power consumption constitutes an essential building block for planning and operating sustainable energy systems. Whereas variations in the dynamics of renewable energy generation are reasonably well studied, a deeper understanding of the variations in consumption dynamics is still missing. Here, we analyse highly resolved residential electricity consumption data of Austrian, German and UK households and propose a generally applicable data-driven load model. Specifically, we disentangle the average demand profiles from the demand fluctuations based purely on time series data. We introduce a stochastic model to quantitatively capture the highly intermittent demand fluctuations. Thereby, we offer a better understanding of demand dynamics, in particular its fluctuations, and provide general tools for disentangling mean demand and fluctuations for any given system, going beyond the standard load profile (SLP). Our insights on the demand dynamics may support planning and operating future-compliant (micro) grids in maintaining supply-demand balance.

Data supporting the assessment of biomass based electricity and reduced GHG emissions in Cuba.

Project description:Assessing the biomass based electricity potential of developing nations like Cuba can help to reduce the fossil fuels dependency and the greenhouse gas emissions. The data included in this study present the evolution of electricity production and greenhouse gas emissions in Cuba. Additionally, the potentialities to produce biomass based electricity by using the most significant biomass sources in Cuba are estimated. Furthermore, estimations of the potential reductions of greenhouse gas emissions, resulting from implementing the biomass based electricity potential of the different sources discussed in the study, are included. Results point to the most promising biomass sources for electricity generation and their potential to reduce GHG emissions.

Survey data on household electricity consumption and living status in Northwestern China.

Project description:Based on 1128 survey questionnaires, main information on urban and rural household electricity consumption was obtained. Original data included household income, the price of electricity, all kinds of electrical appliances, purchase price of main appliances, household size, electricity consumption, as well as power, daily use time of electrical appliances in this data article. These data fully reflected behavior, preferences and living pattern of sample households in electricity use and provided the basis for analyzing the relationship between household electricity consumption and the quality of life ("Does electricity consumption improve residential living status in less developed regions? An empirical analysis using the quantile regression approach" [1]).

Economic growth and electricity consumption: Fresh evidence of panel data for LAC.

Project description:This study reexamines the causal nexus among electricity consumption (EC) and economic growth (EG) for a panel of 31 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean between 1980 and 2021. We find that there are statistically significant feedback impacts among the research variables in the long run. A 1 percent augment in EC raises EG by 0.5 percent and a 1 percent augment in EG produces a 1.54 percent increase in EC which reflects the nature of the latter as a luxury good and implies a tradeoff between economy and environment, since although greater electrical infrastructure drives EG, the latter also increases the EC whose use in a non-responsible manner could lead to environmental degradation through higher CO2 emissions. Therefore, the main policy implication is that, it is necessary to promote EG based on infrastructure focused on sustainable development, ensuring the well-being of present and future generations.

Data for electricity consumption, thermo-physical characteristics of residential buildings in Tehran.

Project description:This data article presents data related to 100 residential units in Tehran, Iran. For each building the ``average monthly electricity consumption'' data for 190 months has been provided. In addition, some physical characteristics of each building are given in the dataset. Presented data includes collected electricity end-users in residential units as well as thermos-physical characteristics of the buildings through a structured questionnaire. The physical characteristics covered in this study include; the number of floors, morphology of the yard and the ratio of the windows on each side window material, area, floor number of the studied residential unit, location in the city, cooling system, heating system, and so on. Information provided in this data article can be useful for research on energy prediction studies and also energy management strategies, and policy making to achieve sustainability targets. Having few datasets published on this topic, especially in hot and arid geographic regions, authors believe that the result of this data study can be generalized to the larger region of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The data consists of two parts; 1. Physical specifications of the building and 2. History of electricity consumption.

Decomposition of air conditioning electricity consumption considering the dependence between the temperature and electricity consumption.

Project description:With the continuous increase in air conditioning installations, the proportion of air conditioning electricity consumption to total electricity consumption is growing. Research on the decomposition of air conditioning electricity consumption is of great significance for assessing electricity usage, formulating electricity scheduling plans, and ensuring the stable operation of the power grid. Currently, typical day selection strategies for the decomposition of air conditioning electricity consumption often overlook the corresponding relationship between typical daily electricity consumption and temperature. Therefore, this paper proposes an air conditioning electricity consumption decomposition method based on the dependence between temperature and electricity consumption. This method filters typical days based on Copula-based dependence indicators and equiprobable ellipses, determines the baseline electricity consumption curve through model selection voting, and ultimately calculates the air conditioning electricity consumption. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by applying it to electricity consumption data in Fuzhou from 2019 to 2022.

The ENERTALK dataset, 15 Hz electricity consumption data from 22 houses in Korea.

Project description:AMI has been gradually replacing conventional meters because newer models can acquire more informative energy consumption data. The additional information has enabled significant advances in many fields, including energy disaggregation, energy consumption pattern analysis and prediction, demand response, and user segmentation. However, the quality of AMI data varies significantly across publicly available datasets, and low sampling rates and numbers of houses monitored seriously limit practical analyses. To address these challenges, we herein present the ENERTALK dataset, which contains both aggregate and per-appliance measurements sampled at 15 Hz from 22 houses. Among the publicly available datasets with both aggregate and per-appliance measurements, 15 Hz was the highest sampling rate. The number of houses (22) was the second-largest where the largest one had a sampling rate of 1 Hz. The ENERTALK dataset is also the first Korean open dataset on residential electricity consumption.
