Stress-strain data for aluminum 6061-T651 from 9 lots at 6 temperatures under uniaxial and plane strain tension.

ABSTRACT: Stress-strain curves in steady-state tension of aluminum 6061-T651 sourced from 9 lots of material from several manufacturers at 6 temperatures (20,100,150,200,250,300 °C) are presented. A total of 100 stress-strain curves for uniaxial tension specimens and 54 stress-strain curves for plane strain tension specimens are shared. Strains are estimated through digital image correlation using a 50.8 mm (2 inch) gauge length for the uniaxial tension specimens and a 6.35 mm (0.25 inch) gauge length for the plane strain specimens. The strains are an average of several measurements (at approximately 350-?m intervals) across the width of the gauge section.

Tunable Electronic Properties of Few-Layer Tellurene under In-Plane and Out-of-Plane Uniaxial Strain.

Project description:Strain engineering is a promising and fascinating approach to tailoring the electrical and optical properties of 2D materials, which is of great importance for fabricating excellent nano-devices. Although previous theoretical works have proved that the monolayer tellurene has desirable mechanical properties with the capability of withstanding large deformation and the tunable band gap and mobility conductance induced by in-plane strain, the effects of in-plane and out-of-plane strains on the properties of few-layer tellurene in different phases should be explored deeply. In this paper, calculations based on first-principles density functional theory were performed to predict the variation in crystal structures and electronic properties of few-layer tellurene, including the α and β phases. The analyses of mechanical properties show that few-layer α-Te can be more easily deformed in the armchair direction than β-Te owing to its lower Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. The α-Te can be converted to β-Te by in-plane compressive strain. The variations in band structures indicate that the uniaxial strain can tune the band structures and even induce the semiconductor-to-metal transition in both few-layer α-Te and β-Te. Moreover, the compressive strain in the zigzag direction is the most feasible scheme due to the lower transition strain. In addition, few-layer β-Te is more easily converted to metal especially for the thicker flakes considering its smaller band gap. Hence, the strain-induced tunable electronic properties and semiconductor-to-metal transition of tellurene provide a theoretical foundation for fabricating metal-semiconductor junctions and corresponding nano-devices.

Stress-strain and microscopy data for fire-damaged aluminum alloy 6061 subjected to multiaxial loading.

Project description:Stress/strain data from mechanical testing of samples obtained from "as received" and fire damaged (400 °C and 500 °C) aluminum alloy 6061 plates is reported. Mechanical load information was obtained from load cells in the mechanical testing system while strain data was obtained from a digital imaging correlation system. For each plate condition (as received, 400 °C, 500 °C), four samples were machined along and across the rolling direction and subjected to four mechanical tests (tension, torsion, two combined tension/torsion tests) for a total of 24 unique combinations of condition, machining direction and loading path. Data from mechanical testing and digital imaging correlation systems was interpolated to generate stress/strain curves. Included data repository allows regeneration of stress/strain curves presented herein. Microscopy samples were obtained both from undeformed plates and deformed samples. Subsequent to polishing, EBSD was carried out and obtained microstructure and pole figures are reported.

Deformation micromechanisms of collagen fibrils under uniaxial tension.

Project description:Collagen, an essential building block of connective tissues, possesses useful mechanical properties due to its hierarchical structure. However, little is known about the mechanical properties of collagen fibril, an intermediate structure between the collagen molecule and connective tissue. Here, we report the results of systematic molecular dynamics simulations to probe the mechanical response of initially unflawed finite size collagen fibrils subjected to uniaxial tension. The observed deformation mechanisms, associated with rupture and sliding of tropocollagen molecules, are strongly influenced by fibril length, width and cross-linking density. Fibrils containing more than approximately 10 molecules along their length and across their width behave as representative volume elements and exhibit brittle fracture. Shorter fibrils experience a more graceful ductile-like failure. An analytical model is constructed and the results of the molecular modelling are used to find curve-fitted expressions for yield stress, yield strain and fracture strain as functions of fibril structural parameters. Our results for the first time elucidate the size dependence of mechanical failure properties of collagen fibrils. The associated molecular deformation mechanisms allow the full power of traditional material and structural engineering theory to be applied to our understanding of the normal and pathological mechanical behaviours of collagenous tissues under load.

Fatigue Prediction of Aluminum Alloys Considering Critical Plane Orientation under Complex Stress States.

Project description:This publication is intended to present a new way of estimating the fatigue life of various construction materials. Carpinteri's proposal was modified by replacing the fatigue limits ratio with the value of the normal to shear stress ratio for a given number of cycles. In this study, the proposed criterion and calculation model was verified for the selected group of aluminium alloys. The purpose of the analysis of the experimental studies was to check the effectiveness of the proposed method of estimating fatigue life under the applied bending and torsional load conditions. The results of the fatigue calculations are presented in graphical form by means of diagrams showing the comparison of design and experimental strength. Before fatigue life was calculated, the critical plane orientation according to Carpinteri's model and the proposed model were determined. After analyzing the results of the comparison of design and experimental durability, it can be stated that the proposed fatigue life estimation algorithm gives satisfactory results for multiaxial cyclic loads.

Short cracks in knee meniscus tissue cause strain concentrations, but do not reduce ultimate stress, in single-cycle uniaxial tension.

Project description:Tears are central to knee meniscus pathology and, from a mechanical perspective, are crack-like defects (cracks). In many materials, cracks create stress concentrations that cause progressive local rupture and reduce effective strength. It is currently unknown if cracks in meniscus have these consequences; if they do, this would have repercussions for management of meniscus pathology. The objective of this study was to determine if a short crack in meniscus tissue, which mimics a preclinical meniscus tear, (a) causes crack growth and reduces effective strength, (b) creates a near-tip strain concentration and (c) creates unloaded regions on either side of the crack. Specimens with and without cracks were tested in uniaxial tension and compared in terms of macroscopic stress-strain curves and digital image correlation strain fields. The strain fields were used as an indicator of stress concentrations and unloaded regions. Effective strength was found to be insensitive to the presence of a crack (potential effect < 0.86 s.d.; β = 0.2), but significant strain concentrations, which have the potential to lead to long-term accumulation of tissue or cell damage, were observed near the crack tip.

Fatigue life analysis for 6061-T6 aluminum alloy based on surface roughness.

Project description:Surface condition is one of the dominant factors affecting fatigue life. Considering the complexity of surface condition, a relatively efficient and economic approach based on surface reconstruction and interpolation method was proposed. The effect of surface roughness on the fatigue life of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy is studied to analyze the fatigue life by surface roughness parameters. Surface topography was simplified into a series of elliptic micro notches, and empirical formula for stress concentration factor is established based on simulation work. Then the extraction method of surface curve is proposed to effectively represent the real surface roughness through 3D model reconstruction. Experiment of surface roughness verified the correctness of the model. The relationship between surface roughness and fatigue life is established and the calculated value of the fatigue life is compared with the test results. The maximum error is 15.65%, indicating that the formula established is reasonable and effective.

Evolution of Shore Hardness under Uniaxial Tension/Compression in Body-Temperature Programmable Elastic Shape Memory Hybrids

Project description:Body-temperature programmable elastic shape memory hybrids (SMHs) have great potential for the comfortable fitting of wearable devices. Traditionally, shore hardness is commonly used in the characterization of elastic materials. In this paper, the evolution of shore hardness in body-temperature programmable elastic SMHs upon cyclic loading, and during the shape memory cycle, is systematically investigated. Upon cyclic loading, similar to the Mullins effect, significant softening appears, when the applied strain is over a certain value. On the other hand, after programming, in general, the measured hardness increases with increase in programming strain. However, for certain surfaces, the hardness decreases slightly and then increases rapidly. The underlying mechanism for this phenomenon is explained by the formation of micro-gaps between the inclusion and the matrix after programming. After heating, to melt the inclusions, all samples (both cyclically loaded and programmed) largely recover their original hardness.

Stress-induced reverse martensitic transformation in a Ti-51Ni (at%) alloy aged under uniaxial stress.

Project description:Ti-51Ni (at%) alloys including coherent precipitates of Ti3Ni4 exhibits thermally-induced B2-R transformation. If the Ti3Ni4 is formed under tensile stress, it orientates preferentially so that its habit plane becomes perpendicular to the tensile axis. In such specimens, stress-induced reverse R-B2 transformation is reported to occur. In the present study, the stress-induced reverse R-B2 transformation behavior was studied by infrared camera and in situ X-ray analysis. The infrared camera observation revealed that the temperature of the specimen decreases homogeneously by the application of tensile stress within the resolution of the camera. The in situ X-ray analysis revealed that stress-induced reverse R-B2 transformation and rearrangement of variants of the R-phase occurs simultaneously in the specimen.

Piezoresistive Properties of Suspended Graphene Membranes under Uniaxial and Biaxial Strain in Nanoelectromechanical Pressure Sensors.

Project description:Graphene membranes act as highly sensitive transducers in nanoelectromechanical devices due to their ultimate thinness. Previously, the piezoresistive effect has been experimentally verified in graphene using uniaxial strain in graphene. Here, we report experimental and theoretical data on the uni- and biaxial piezoresistive properties of suspended graphene membranes applied to piezoresistive pressure sensors. A detailed model that utilizes a linearized Boltzman transport equation describes accurately the charge-carrier density and mobility in strained graphene and, hence, the gauge factor. The gauge factor is found to be practically independent of the doping concentration and crystallographic orientation of the graphene films. These investigations provide deeper insight into the piezoresistive behavior of graphene membranes.

Gene expression profiling in soybean under aluminum stress: mechanisms of magnesium amelioration of aluminum toxicity

Project description:Gene expression profiling in soybean under aluminum stress: mechanisms of magnesium amelioration of aluminum toxicity at gene expression level. Micro-molar concentrations of magnesium in culture solution has been shown to ameliorate Al toxicity in soybean and other leguminous species. Different theories have been proposed to explain the chemical mechanisms of how the two ions interact to neutralize the toxic effect of aluminum in the plant root system. To understand the molecular mechanisms of the phenomenon at the gene expression level in soybean, we undertook a comparative transcriptome analysis in Al-tolerant and Al-sensitive genotypes treated with aluminum alone or aluminum plus magnesium using DNA microarrays. The results revealed magnesium enhances Al-tolerance level in the Al-tolerant genotype by down-regulating genes commonly induced in response to Al toxicity. We hypothesized that the magnesium-mediated alleviation of Al toxicity in the Al-tolerant genotype emanates from reduction in energy expenditure of gene expression induced in response to Al stress. Conversely, magnesium appears to ameliorate Al toxicity in the sensitive genotype by dual mechanisms of increasing the expression level of several genes involved in Al-tolerance and decreasing the expression level of most genes.
