A Simple and Efficient Mechanochemical Route for the Synthesis of Salophen Ligands and of the Corresponding Zn, Ni, and Pd Complexes.

ABSTRACT: A number of salophen ligands and their Zn, Ni, and Pd complexes were synthesized by an efficient one-pot mechanosynthesis protocol. The reaction products were characterized by means of complementary solid-state techniques, i.e., powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Four new crystal structures of metal salophen complexes as DMSO solvates are here reported. The described simple and relatively fast (about 1 h for all derivatives) procedure is a good alternative to classical methods performed in organic solvents.

Project description:Two new metal complexes involving Schiff base ligands, namely, [Pd(L1)2] (1) and [Zn(L2)2] (2), [HL1: 2,4-dibromo-6-((E)-(mesitylimino)methyl)phenol and HL2: 2-((E)-(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)methyl)-4,6-dibromophenol], have been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR-spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both 1 and 2 are mononuclear cyclometalated complexes with square planar and tetrahedral coordination geometry, respectively. 1 and 2 display photoluminescence in the solid state at 298 K (fluorescence lifetimes τ = 5.521 μs at 508 nm for 1; τ = 3.697 μs at 506 nm for 2). These Schiff base ligands and their metal complexes have been screened for antibacterial activity against several bacteria strains, and the results are compared with the activity of penicillin. Moreover, the Suzuki reaction of 4-bromoanisole with phenylboronic acid by 1 has also been studied.

Simple Zn(ii) complexes for the production and degradation of polyesters.

Project description:Nine new complexes based on thioether appended iminophenolate (ONS) ligands have been prepared and fully characterized in solution by NMR spectroscopy. Solid-state structures were also obtained for seven complexes. In solution, all complexes were monomeric. The complexes were highly active for the polymerization of purified rac-lactide ([M] : [Zn] : [BnOH] = 10 000 : 1 : 30 at 180 °C) reaching TOF values up to 250 000 h-1. The kinetics of the polymerization have been probed by in situ Raman spectroscopy. The rate of reaction was dramatically reduced using technical grade rac-lactide with increased initiator loading. To move towards a circular economy, it is vital that catalysts are developed to facilitate chemical recycling of commodity and emerging polymeric materials. In this vein, the complexes have been assessed for their ability to break down poly(lactic acid) and poly(ethylene terephthalate). The results from both the polymerization and degradation reactions are discussed in terms of ligand functionality.

A trustworthy mechanochemical route to isocyanides.

Project description:Isocyanides are hardly produced, dramatically sensitive to purification processes, and complex to handle as synthetic tools. Notwithstanding, they represent one of the most refined and valuable compounds for accessing sophisticated and elegant synthetic routes. A unique interest has always been addressed to their production, though their synthetic pathways usually involve employing strong conditions and toxic reagents. The current paper intends to provide a conceptually innovative synthetic protocol for mechanochemical isocyanide preparation, simultaneously lowering the related reagents' toxicity and improving their purification in a straightforward procedure.

Synthesis and structures of divalent Co, Ni, Zn and Cd complexes of mixed dichalcogen and dipnictogen ligands with corrosion inhibition properties: experimental and computational studies.

Project description:The structural and corrosion inhibition properties of four different transition-metal complexes of heteroleptic S-donor atom dithiophosphonate and N-donor atom phenanthroline ligands are reported. Full structural characterization of the Co, Ni, Zn and Cd complexes was achieved with the aid of single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Structural elucidation revealed the formation of a 4-coordinate Zn(ii) complex, and 6-coordinate Ni(ii) and Cd(ii), as well as a novel dithiophosphonato Co(ii) complex. The ability of the complexes with this ligand type to act as inhibitors of mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl solution is reported for the first time. Corrosion inhibition potentials of the complexes were assessed using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and density functional theory (DFT). The open circuit potential (OCP) time profile showed the system achieved a steady-state potential before the first 600 s after submerging the working electrode in the corrosive medium. The studied metal complexes are good inhibitors of mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl and were found to retard the corrosion rate by forming an adsorbed pseudocapacitive film on the steel surface. The order of inhibition efficiencies was in the order Ni (94.14%) > Cd (92.28%) > Zn (91.14%) > Co (72.53%).

Zn and Ni complexes of pyridine-2,6-di-carboxyl-ates: crystal field stabilization matters!

Project description:Six reaction products of ZnII and NiII with pyridine-2,6-di-carb-oxy-lic acid (H2Lig1), 4-chloro-pyridine-2,6-di-carb-oxy-lic acid (H2Lig2) and 4-hy-droxy-pyridine-2,6-di-carb-oxy-lic acid (H2Lig3) are used to pinpoint the structural consequences of crystal field stabilization by an incomplete d shell. The pseudo-octa-hedral ZnII coordination sphere in bis-(6-carb-oxy-picolinato)zinc(II) trihydrate, [Zn(C7H4NO4)2]·3H2O or [Zn(HLig1)2]·3H2O, (1), is significantly less regular than that about NiII in the isostructural compound bis-(6-carb-oxy-picolinato)nickel(II) trihydrate, [Ni(C7H4NO4)2]·3H2O or [Ni(HLig1)2]·3H2O, (2). The ZnII complexes poly[(4-chloro-pyridine-2,6-di-carboxyl-ato)zinc(II)], [Zn(C7H2ClNO4)] n or [Zn(Lig2)] n , (3), and poly[[(4-hy-droxy-pyridine-2,6-di-carboxyl-ato)zinc(II)] monohydrate], {[Zn(C7H3NO5)]·H2O} n or {[Zn(Lig3)]·H2O} n , (4), represent two-dimensional coordination polymers with chelating and bridging pyridine-2,6-di-carboxyl-ate ligands in which the coordination polyhedra about the central cations cannot be associated with any regular shape; their coordination environments range between trigonal-bipyramidal and square-pyramidal geometries. In contrast, the corresponding adducts of the diprotonated ligands to NiII, namely tri-aqua-(4-chloro-pyridine-2,6-di-carboxyl-ato)nickel(II), [Ni(C7H2ClNO4)(H2O)3] or [NiLig2(OH2)3)], (5), and tri-aqua-(4-hy-droxy-pyridine-2,6-di-carboxyl-ato)nickel(II) 1.7-hydrate, [Ni(C7H3NO5)(H2O)3]·1.7H2O or [NiLig3(OH2)3)]·1.7H2O, (6), feature rather regular octa-hedral coordination spheres about the transition-metal cations, thus precluding the formation of analogous extended structures.

Electronic and magnetic properties of the [Ni(salophen)]: An experimental and DFT study.

Project description:The effect of the coordination of a Ni(II) ion on the electronic and magnetic properties of the ligand salophen were experimentally and theoretically evaluated. The complex [Ni(salophen)] was synthesized and characterized through FTIR and an elemental analysis. Spectral data obtained using DMSO as a solvent showed that the ligand absorption profile was significantly disturbed after the coordination of the metal atom. In addition to a redshift of the salophen ligand absorption bands, mainly composed by π → π∗ electronic transitions, additional bands of around 470 nm were observed, resulting in a partial metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Furthermore, a significant increment of its band intensities was observed, favoring a more intense absorption in a broader range of the visible spectrum, which is a desired characteristic for applications in the field of organic electronics. This finding is related to an increment of the planarity and consequent electron delocalization of the macrocycle in the complex, which was estimated by the calculation of the current strengths at the PBE0/cc-pVTZ (Dyall.v3z for Ni(II)) level.

Ni(II)-Salophen-Comprehensive Analysis on Electrochemical and Spectral Characterization and Biological Studies.

Project description:New aspects of the Ni(II)-salophen complex and salophen ligand precursor were found during deep electrochemical and optical characterization, as well as biological studies for new pharmacological applications. Physicochemical and spectroscopic methods (1H- and 13C-NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis, electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and molar conductance measurements) were also used to prove that the salophen ligand acts as a tetradentate and coordinates to the central metal through nitrogen and oxygen atoms. The electrochemical behavior of the free Schiff salophen ligand (H2L) and its Ni(II) complex (Ni(II)L) was deeply studied in tetrabutylammonium perchlorate solutions in acetonitrile via CV, DPV, and RDE. Blue films on the surfaces of the electrodes as a result of the electropolymerization processes were put in evidence and characterized via CV and DPV. (H2L) and Ni(II)L complexes were tested for their antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant activity, showing good antimicrobial and antifungal activity against several bacteria and fungi.

Synthesis, characterization and application of oxovanadium(iv) complexes with [NNO] donor ligands: X-ray structures of their corresponding dioxovanadium(v) complexes.

Project description:Two oxovanadium(iv) complexes ligated by [NNO] donor ligands have been synthesized and characterized by ESI-HRMS, elemental (CHN) analysis and spectroscopic (UV-Vis, IR and EPR) techniques. Block shaped brown crystals from the methanolic solutions of these oxovanadium(iv) complexes were obtained during the crystallization process. Crystallographic structures of the resulting crystals revealed that the original oxovanadium(iv) complexes have been transformed into new dioxovanadium(v) complexes with concomitant oxidation of VIV to VV. The original oxovanadium(iv) complexes have been identified to be an efficient catalyst for the CO2 cycloaddition reaction with epoxides resulting up to 100% cyclic carbonate products. The geometries of oxovanadium(iv) complexes are optimized by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the uB3LYP/6-31G**/LANL2DZ level of theory. The geometry and structural parameters of optimized structures of oxovanadium(iv) complexes are in excellent agreement with the parameters of X-ray structures of their dioxovanadium(v) counterparts. Further, TD-DFT and Spin Density Plots for the oxovanadium(iv) complexes are performed in order to get more insights about their electronic absorption and EPR spectroscopies, respectively.

Mechanochemical route to the synthesis of nanostructured Aluminium nitride.

Project description:Hexagonal Aluminium nitride (h-AlN) is an important wide-bandgap semiconductor material which is conventionally fabricated by high temperature carbothermal reduction of alumina under toxic ammonia atmosphere. Here we report a simple, low cost and potentially scalable mechanochemical procedure for the green synthesis of nanostructured h-AlN from a powder mixture of Aluminium and melamine precursors. A combination of experimental and theoretical techniques has been employed to provide comprehensive mechanistic insights on the reactivity of melamine, solid state metal-organic interactions and the structural transformation of Al to h-AlN under non-equilibrium ball milling conditions. The results reveal that melamine is adsorbed through the amine groups on the Aluminium surface due to the long-range van der Waals forces. The high energy provided by milling leads to the deammoniation of melamine at the initial stages followed by the polymerization and formation of a carbon nitride network, by the decomposition of the amine groups and, finally, by the subsequent diffusion of nitrogen into the Aluminium structure to form h-AlN.
