Synthesis by a Cost-Effective Method and Electroluminescence of a Novel Efficient Yellowish-Green Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Molecule.

ABSTRACT: A new thermally activated delayed fluorescent molecule, TRZ 3(Ph-PTZ), containing three phenothiazines as donor units and a 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine as the acceptor unit was synthesized using a simple cost-effective method based on a cobalt catalyzed cross-coupling. This compound was tested in organic light-emitting diodes and was found to show superior yellowish-green electroluminescence performance with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 17.4% and a maximum luminance value of 7430 cd/m².

Project description:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) small molecule bis-[3-(9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine)-phenyl]-sulfone (m-ACSO2) was used as a universal host to sensitize three conventional fluorescent polymers for maximizing the electroluminescent performance. The excitons were utilized via inter-molecular energy transfer and the non-radiative decays were successfully refrained in the condensed states. Therefore, the significant enhancement of the electroluminescent efficiencies was demonstrated. For instance, after doping poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) into m-ACSO2, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) was improved by a factor of 17.0 in the solution-processed organic light-emitting device (OLED), as compared with the device with neat F8BT. In terms of the other well-known fluorescent polymers, i.e., poly (para-phenylene vinylene) copolymer (Super Yellow, SY) and poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV), their EQEs in the devices were respectively enhanced by 70% and 270%, compared with the reference devices based on the conventional host 1,3-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl) benzene (mCP). Besides the improved charge balance in the bipolar TADF host, these were partially ascribed to reduced fluorescence quenching in the mixed films.

Saturated Red Electroluminescence From Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Conjugated Polymers.

Project description:Two sets of conjugated polymers with anthraquinone groups as pendant acceptors were designed and synthesized. The acceptor is tethered to an diphenylamine group via a phenylene bridge, constructing a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) unit, which is embedded into the polymer backbone through its donor fragment, while the backbone is composed of dibenzothiophene-S, S-dioxide and 2, 7-fluorene or 2, 7-carbazole groups. The polymers show distinct TADF characteristics, confirmed by transient photoluminescence spectra and theoretical calculations. The carbazole-based polymers exhibit shorter delay lifetimes and lower energy emission relative to the fluorene-based polymers. The non-doped organic light-emitting diodes fabricated via solution processing approach produce efficient red emissions with the wavelengths of 625-646 nm. The carbazole containing polymer with 2% molar content of the TADF unit exhibits the best maximum external quantum efficiency of 13.6% and saturated red electroluminescence with the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.62, 0.37).

Trap-Controlled White Electroluminescence From a Single Red-Emitting Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Polymer.

Project description:Single white-emitting polymers have been reported by incorporating the second-generation carbazole dendron into the side chain of a red-emitting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) polymer. Due to the prevented hole trap effect, in this case, excitons can be generated simultaneously on the polymeric host and the red TADF dopant to give a dual emission. Consequently, a bright white electroluminescence is achieved even at a dopant loading as high as 5 mol.%, revealing a maximum luminous efficiency of 16.1 cd/A (12.0 lm/W, 8.2%) and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.42, 0.32). The results clearly indicate that the delicate tuning of charge trap is a promising strategy to develop efficient single white-emitting polymers, whose low-band-gap chromophore content can be up to a centesimal level.

Enhanced Electroluminescence Based on a <i>π</i>-Conjugated Heptazine Derivative by Exploiting Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence.

Project description:Heptazine derivatives have attracted much attention over the past decade by virtue of intriguing optical, photocatalytic as well as electronic properties in the fields of hydrogen evolution, organic optoelectronic technologies and so forth. Here, we report a simple π-conjugated heptazine derivative (HAP-3DF) possessing an n→π* transition character which exhibits enhanced electroluminescence by exploiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Green-emitting HAP-3DF shows relatively low photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (Φ p) of 0.08 in toluene and 0.16 in doped film with bis(2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl) ether oxide (DPEPO) as the matrix. Interestingly, the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) incorporating 8 wt% HAP-3DF:DPEPO as an emitting layer achieved a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 3.0% in view of the fairly low Φ p of 0.16, indicating the presence of TADF stemming from n→π* transitions. As the matrix changing from DPEPO to 1,3-di (9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzene (mCP), a much higher Φ p of 0.56 was found in doped film accompanying yellow emission. More importantly, enhanced electroluminescence was observed from the OLED containing 8 wt% HAP-3DF:mCP as an emitting layer, and a rather high EQE of 10.8% along with a low roll-off was realized, which should be ascribed to the TADF process deriving from exciplex formation.

Operando ESR observation in thermally activated delayed fluorescent organic light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have advantages over OLEDs using conventional fluorescent materials or high-cost phosphorescent materials, including higher efficiency and lower cost. To attain further high device performance, clarifying internal charge states in OLEDs at a microscopic viewpoint is crucial; however, only a few such studies have been performed. Here, we report a microscopic investigation into internal charge states in OLEDs with a TADF material by electron spin resonance (ESR) at a molecular level. We observed operando ESR signals of the OLEDs and identified their origins due to a hole-transport material PEDOT:PSS, gap states at an electron-injection layer, and a host material CBP in the light-emitting layer by performing density functional theory calculation and studying thin films used in the OLEDs. The ESR intensity varied with increasing applied bias before and after the light emission. We find leakage electrons in the OLED at a molecular level, which is suppressed by a further electron-blocking layer MoO3 between the PEDOT:PSS and light-emitting layer, resulting in the enhancement of luminance with a low-voltage drive. Such microscopic information and applying our method to other OLEDs will further improve the OLED performance from the microscopic viewpoint.

Highly emissive excitons with reduced exchange energy in thermally activated delayed fluorescent molecules.

Project description:Unlike conventional thermally activated delayed fluorescence chromophores, boron-centered azatriangulene-like molecules combine a small excited-state singlet-triplet energy gap with high oscillator strengths and minor reorganization energies. Here, using highly correlated quantum-chemical calculations, we report this is driven by short-range reorganization of the electron density taking place upon electronic excitation of these multi-resonant structures. Based on this finding, we design a series of π-extended boron- and nitrogen-doped nanographenes as promising candidates for efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters with concomitantly decreased singlet-triplet energy gaps, improved oscillator strengths and core rigidity compared to previously reported structures, permitting both emission color purity and tunability across the visible spectrum.

Tuning Optical Properties by Controlled Aggregation: Electroluminescence Assisted by Thermally-Activated Delayed Fluorescence from Thin Films of Crystalline Chromophores.

Project description:Several photophysical properties of chromophores depend crucially on intermolecular interactions. Thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is often influenced by close packing of the chromophore assembly. In this context, the metal-organic framework (MOF) approach has several advantages: it can be used to steer aggregation such that the orientation within aggregated structures can be predicted using rational approaches. We demonstrate this design concept for a DPA-TPE (diphenylamine-tetraphenylethylene) chromophore, which is non-emissive in its solvated state due to vibrational quenching. Turning this DPA-TPE into a ditopic linker makes it possible to grow oriented MOF thin films exhibiting pronounced green electroluminescence with low onset voltages. Measurements at different temperatures clearly demonstrate the presence of TADF. Finally, this work reports that the layer-by-layer process used for MOF thin film deposition allows the integration of the TADF-DPA-TPE in a functioning LED device.

Achieving Submicrosecond Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Lifetime and Highly Efficient Electroluminescence by Fine-Tuning of the Phenoxazine-Pyrimidine Structure.

Project description:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials, combining high fluorescence quantum efficiency and short delayed emission lifetime, are highly desirable for application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with negligible external quantum efficiency (EQE) roll-off. Here, we present the pathway for shortening the TADF lifetime of highly emissive 4,6-bis[4-(10-phenoxazinyl)phenyl]pyrimidine derivatives. Tiny manipulation of the molecular structure with methyl groups was applied to tune the singlet-triplet energy-level scheme and the corresponding coupling strengths, enabling the boost of the reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) rate (from 0.7 to 6.5) × 106 s-1 and shorten the TADF lifetime down to only 800 ns in toluene solutions. An almost identical TADF lifetime of roughly 860 ns was attained also in solid films for the compound with the most rapid TADF decay in toluene despite the presence of inevitable conformational disorder. Concomitantly, the boost of fluorescence quantum efficiency to near unity was achieved in solid films due to the weakened nonradiative decay. Exceptional EQE peak values of 26.3-29.1% together with adjustable emission wavelength in the range of 502-536 nm were achieved in TADF OLEDs. Reduction of EQE roll-off was demonstrated by lowering the TADF lifetime.

Double boron-embedded multiresonant thermally activated delayed fluorescent materials for organic light-emitting diodes.

Project description:The subclass of multi resonant thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters (MR-TADF) containing boron atoms has garnered significant attention in the field of organic light emitting diode (OLED) research. Among boron-based MR-TADF emitters, double boron-embedded MR-TADF (DB-MR-TADF) emitters show excellent electroluminescence performances with high photoluminescence quantum yields, narrow band emission, and beneficially small singlet-triplet energy levels in all the full-color gamut regions. This article reviews recent progress in DB-MR-TADF emitters, with particular attention to molecular design concepts, synthetic routes, optoelectronic properties, and OLED performance, giving future prospects for real-world applications.

Studies on Annihilation and Coreactant Electrochemiluminescence of Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Molecules in Organic Medium.

Project description:Very recently, there is a great research interest in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) featuring thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties, i.e., TADF-ECL. It is appealing since the earlier reports in this topic well-confirmed that this strategy has a great potential in achieving all-exciton-harvesting ECL efficiency under electrochemical excitation, which is a breakthrough in the topic of organic ECL. However, organic phase electrochemistry and ECL studies surrounding TADF-ECL are still extremely rare. Especially, the ECL spectra of previous reported TADF emitters are still very different from their PL spectra. In this work, we systematically measure and discuss the liquid electrochemistry and ECL behavior of two typical TADF molecules in organic medium. Most importantly, we verify for the first time that the ECL spectra of them (coreactant ECL mode) are identical to their PL spectra counterparts, which confirms the effectiveness of TADF photophysical properties in the coreactant ECL mode in practice.
